From the Deputies

During our school assembly on Monday 14 October the student body formally farewelled our Year 12 students. The agenda was devoted to Year 12 and showcased some of their talents. We were entertained with musical acts and viewed footage of the students’ journey from when they first walked through the gates until the young men we see before us today.Without doubt the highlight of the assembly was the speeches delivered by our three captains. Jake Sykes, Lachlan Devine and Jacob Fair spoke with pride and passion about their time as Joey’s Boys and how much it meant to them to have held the leadership roles they did in their final year of school. The 2013 Year 12 cohort is also the final year we will see students graduate who attended primary school at St Joseph’s thus ending a significant part of the school’s history. On behalf of all the staff of St Joseph’s we would like to wish our Year 12 VCE students every success with their upcoming exams. It is important to remember that an ATAR score is only one measure of success and while it is very important to a lot of boys, as long as they work hard and do their best we will all be very proud of their efforts. SAFE SCHOOLS HUBA new resource has been established by Education Services Australia to provide wellbeing information and advice for parents, students and schools. Parents are able to access information about the National Safe Schools Framework and explore a wide range of resources specifically designed for parents. Students have access to their own site that gives them resources that are age specific and focus on the challenges associated with creating safe places to learn and grow. We would encourage parents and students to access the site by following the link below. http://www.safeschoolshub.edu.au/YEAR 7 INFORMATION EVENING HELD ON TUESDAY 22 OCTOBEROn a wintery spring night, 260 families attended the Year 72014 Information evening. It was a valuable opportunity to meet with staff and also to receive information invaluable for the boys’ start at SJC. Making the world a better place

Year 12 Results and Change of

Preference

The next Change of Preference (COP) period for Year 12 is from 25 November (9am) to 23 December (12 noon). On 16 December, Year 12 results will be released by VTAC, therefore students will have the opportunity to make changes to their preferences after they have found out what their results are. During the COP period, Year 12 students can add, remove or re-order their preferences, through My Info. This COP is the last opportunity to change preferences before offers are made by Universities and Training Providers.

If students need help with their preferences, all Universities are offering assistance through phone in hotlines as well as COP expos and information sessions. Students were provided with a hand out at the assembly on 21 October with all contact details. I will also be available during this time.

If students wish to make changes, please do not leave them to the last minute, and take careful note of the closing time (12 noon) for COP.

The fi rst round of offers will be made on 17 January 2014. Students are advised to accept their fi rst round offer. 80% of offers are made in the fi rst round. If a student receives a second round offer, they can say no to their fi rst round offer. Students must be available to attend the higher education provider to enrol or defer their course. Students should refer to the VTAC ABC of Applying Book for information regarding the application process, or contact VTAC on 1300 364 133. Information is also available on the VTAC website at: www.vtac.edu.au

Year 12 students are welcome to contact me during the school holidays if they require support or guidance with their career pathway choices.

Karen Shum - Careers Coordinator

Last weekend saw many staff and students doing their bit to make this world a better place – a place of justice, peace and compassion. The Gospels describe for us the banquet of life to which God invites everyone equally. No-one is to be left unnoticed at the gate as Lazarus was by the rich man (Lk 16:19-31).

On Friday, a large number of staff and their families supported the Marrma’ Rom Foundation’s annual fundraiser. This program supports boys from North East Arnhem Land to live in Geelong, attend St Joseph’s, and learn to live assuredly in the western world. The intention is for these boys to “walk confi dently in two worlds” and help close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Two current participants, Dion and Jerol, are working on a Certifi cate in Indigenous Health which will enable them to assist their community to improve health outcomes.

As this weekend was the end of “Poverty Week”, St Vincent de Paul Society conducted a workshop about the work they do in Geelong and the needs they are facing. Year 11 student and newly badged Social Justice Captain, Darcy Caddy, and staff members Claire Wrigley and I attended this workshop, where we found out about the growing complexities of need facing the people of Geelong. 75% of people who access Vinnies services are employed, however, they fi nd it increasingly diffi cult to meet the basic necessities of life for their families. These are the growing number of working poor. For those unemployed, the region has a jobless rate almost twice the state and national average. We are currently considering ways of assisting with food relief and social contact for those on the margins of our community.

Also on Saturday, there was a group from St Joseph’s promoting compassion and understanding for refugees and asylum seekers. The Coalition of Refugee Action Groups (CRAG) of which St Joseph’s is a member, held a rally and march from Johnson’s Park, along Malop St and then down to Cunningham Pier. The rally not only expressed support for refugees and condemned the secretive approach of the Federal Government, but rejected the policies which place all people who arrive by boat in detention centres and refuse them refugee visas. As the Catholic Bishops of Australia have stated along with many others, it is not illegal to seek asylum in Australia by boat or any other means, a right enshrined by the United Nations Refugee convention of which Australia is a signatory.

Expressed through our commitment to justice and solidarity, St Joseph’s College stands with those in our community who are left at the gate, no matter their nationality, geographical location or race.Jo Hart - Director of Mission & Identity

Tri-UMPH is back in 2014 and we need your help!!St Joseph’s College, Sacred Heart College, Clonard College and Saint Ignatius College are uniting yet again in 2014 to make poverty history with the third Tri-UMPH Music Festival.

As our name Tri-UMPH – an acronym for “Triennially United to Make Poverty History” – suggests, our purpose for the event is to support the universal efforts to make poverty history. Specifi cally, we will be raising funds for specifi c towns that are facing poverty at present, with a focus on education and youth development. We hope to provide the necessary facilities to ensure a prosperous and peaceful future for people living in poverty.

Through our efforts with Tri-UMPH, we hope to provide funds and therefore opportunities which will help to build peace and stability for a community.

In 2008 and 2011, St Joseph’s hosted the Tri-UMPH Musical

Tri-UMPH 2014

Festival where many popular performers and artist played to over 4,000 students. Collectively, we raised funds to support pre-school and primary education in Railaco, a small East Timor village, gave fi nancial assistance to a teacher’s college in Baccau on the north coast of East Timor and promoted and assisted education in Oescusu, a small province west of Dili, the capital of East Timor. The successful music festival was heavily publicized in the region and was plugged on national news stations.

With the planning committee already hard at work we would like to take this opportunity to make a plea to all families and ask for any assistance you may be able to provide. Obviously this event is a huge one on the school calendar and in order to make it as successful as possible we call upon any parents, families or businesses that may be able to assist. Your assistance could include anything from the following list (contacts with bands or performers, celebrity guests, sponsors or donations for raffl es, fi rst aid, security, food vans, event management experience, AV equipment, aids or organizations that could have a stall, equipment hire such as marquees, t-shirt printing companies, rubbish removal, portable toilets etc.) And of course anything else that you may think will assist. If you can help out in any way, big or small, please email Rebecca Westwood on [email protected] or call me via the front offi ce.

As a part of Tri-UMPH you will have the opportunity to be part of the further development of poverty stricken communities.

Rebecca Westwood - Student Leadership Coordinator and Tri-UMPH coordinator.

COMPUTER GAMES BANNEDAfter detailed explanation and notices, students were given last week to remove all games from the school laptops and storage devices brought to school. Penalties for breaches will include a Thursday detention. It is difficult to continually check laptops for games, so we ask that parents assist us in ensuring that their sons have removed all games from laptops and storage devices brought to school.HOME INTERNET FILTER TRIAL15 families and 19 boys participated in a seven week trial of our Home Internet Filter. Twelve parents responded to the survey at the end of the trial. 67% - 82% of these parents found that the use of the filter reduced concerns in the following areas:• Too much playing of internet games• Too much use of social networking sites (like Facebook)• Worry about the sites that could be accessed• Too much time wasting• Too much time on the computer• Tension at home because of computer use33% noted that it reduced downloading of music and movies. One parent noted that they “found it was too invasive, and blocked wikipedia, youtube and a number of other websites that our son visited”One parent commented that they felt that they “had to continually supervise homework on the laptop as the time was used accessing games or social media. Every night was a battle! Despite feeling aggrieved by being included in the study, (our son) admitted that it did make him concentrate more on homework because he couldn’t get onto Facebook! Even though we had problems with the laptops during the trial, it made for a much calmer evening at home!”Most parents opted to receive automated reports showing internet activity of their sons. These were seen as useful to start conversations or refer to occasionally. Some parents found them too long and difficult to understand but most parents felt it was a good option for parents. One parent commented, “I think all parents should receive the reports. The reports gave us a good opportunity to talk about things like inappropriate searches, social media etc”From the ten students who responded to the survey, the following percentage claimed the filter helped reduce activities• Reduced the playing of internet games – 40%• Reduced the use of social networking sites – 43%• Reduced the downloading music or movies from the internet – 40%• Reduced wasting time on sites not required for homework – 63%

• Reduced spending too much time on the computer – 55%• Reduced conflict at home because of my computer use – 63%CONCLUSIONSThe trial allowed us to correct the software settings in preparation for a full release. Parents and students found the use of the home internet filter significantly reduced tension at home caused by computer use. In 2014, the filter will be added to all laptops but will be activated only upon parental request. There will be no cost for this service.2013 ESMART PARENT SURVEY RE-OPENEDNext Newsletter – report of the 2013 eSmart Parent Survey. 370 families have replied but we would encourage more parents to respond. The survey has been re-opened until Sunday 27 October for parents who still wish to have a say in the way laptops are used and the way cybersafety is addressed.Chris Valmadre – Director Of ICT

Senior Band win at Show

This month Year 7 and 9 students should have received their results for the NAPLAN Tests conducted earlier in the year. The results, although useful for giving an estimation of where your son sits in relation to his peers, are only one form of assessment and should not been seen in isolation or as the most accurate form of assessment. Assessing a student’s ability is a complex process involving the use of a variety of assessment strategies across all classroom situations and activities. This process is refl ected in the information provided in your son’s semester reports. The results of NAPLAN tests will provide some additional information to supplement data already obtained by his subject teachers through the assessments your son has completed. If you are concerned with your son’s academic progress please do not hesitate to contact any of his subject teachers.

If you have any questions regarding NAPLAN results there are many resources available on the NAP (National Assessment Program) at http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/naplan.html or you could contact me at the College, email: [email protected]

A True Immersion

Last week I was privileged to travel to Queensland as part of the St Joseph’s Year 9 Immersion program. Twelve students, Mrs Linda Bentley and I stayed at St Brendan’s College boarding school in Yeppoon for the whole week. Our boys attended some classes with their host students and every day there was an excursion to a local attraction including the Capricorn Caves, Great Keppell Island, the Rockhampton Dreamtime Centre and a crocodile farm. At the school, we were treated to a “Cup Marie” which is a kind of local traditional meal as well as some traditional dancing from Torres Strait Islander students.

Overall though, the word Immersion was the key to our stay. As the days went on our boys totally immersed themselves in the routines of boarding school life. They did homework together, played sport together and swam in the school pool. Their parents back home would have marvelled to see them stop talking and go to sleep when lights were turned out at 9.15pm every night! Our boys interacted easily with Aboriginal boys from all over Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands. On our last night there were hugs and exchanges of sports shirts, demonstrating the strength of the bonds that had been formed in a few short days.

All our students hopefully learn a lot at St Joseph’s about Reconciliation, but the boys on the Yeppoon trip have been lucky enough to experience Reconciliation in action. They came to a school where students and staff of indigenous and non-indigenous backgrounds simply get on with the job, and they very quickly slotted into the lifestyle themselves. The more they share their stories with family and friends back home, the more the work of Reconciliation continues in our own backyard.
