s you embrace the start of the first year of the rest of your life it may be worthwhile considering the options that lie before

you. 2016 has the potential to be your best year ever, your worst year ever or pretty much a continuum of what you experienced in 2015. The determin-ing factor will be how you approach the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. We all have the ability to influence the world by the choices we make and often these choices have unintended consequences. The old adage about reaping what you sow has particular relevance when considering these things and by way of illustration I offer this example.

His name was Fleming, and he was a

poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the source of the disturbance. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death.

The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman’s sparse surround-ings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved.

“I want to repay you,” said the noble-man. “You saved my son’s life.”

“No, I can’t accept payment for what I did,” the Scottish farmer replied, waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer’s own son came to the door of the family hovel.

“Is that your son?” the nobleman asked.

“Yes,” the farmer replied proudly.

“I’ll make you a deal. Let me take him and give

him a good education. If the lad is anything like his father, he’ll grow to a man you can be proud of.”

And that he did. In time, Farmer Fleming’s son graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London. He went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the man who discovered Penicillin.Years afterward, the nobleman’s son was stricken with pneumonia. What saved him? Penicillin.

The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son’s name? Sir Winston Churchill.Someone once said: What goes around comes around. So, with a new year stretching ahead like an unwritten story, I intend to do my best to make it my best year ever and I hope that you will too.

Welcome to another chapter in the on-going series that is Life & Style, bringing you the best of everything on air, online and in print from Ballito with love!

A CAREER IN ESTATE AGENCY – IS IT FOR YOU?

IDA DU PLOOY - HARCOURTS DOLPHIN COAST

Have you considered Real Estate in Ballito or Umdloti as a career?

TO establish whether or not a career in Real Estate is the right one for you, Harcourts

Dolphin Coast are hosting a FREE information event where you can learn more of the basics on how to become a professional real estate agent. This will be followed by FREE evening classes where you will learn the basics on how to become a professional real estate agent – the Harcourts way.

All those with a drivers licence and a matric certificate, read on!

QualificationsNot the most important

requirement for the job, although many recruit graduates very often have the ability to progress quickly within Real Estate. To become a Full Status agent a NQF 4 qualification will be required. Harcourts offers an Academy where the candidate can become qualified while working as an intern agent.

PersonalityReal Estate is a people orientated

industry; therefore, you need to be good with people from all walks of life. You should be confident without being arrogant, have the ability to remain calm under pressure, and possess excellent interpersonal skills. This is fundamentally a sales job, so it does help to have a persuasive but polite

nature. Real Estate is a dynamic, fast moving industry which requires a high degree of commitment and drive.

HoursReal Estate is a service industry;

therefore you should be willing to provide one! This involves making yourself available to the public outside normal working hours. On average, the hours tend to be 8.30/9.00am through to 6.30/7.00pm Monday to Friday, with some varying amounts of weekend work.

SalarySalaries vary quite dramatically

within Real Estate, as what you earn will depend predominantly on how successful you are. When you start in the industry you will probably have to be self-supporting until your first transaction gets registered. This figure will vary depending on the commission and is based on your personal sales figures. Ultimately, you control how much you earn, as your sales ability will be reflected in your salary. There are no limitations on how much you can earn. Become the entrepreneur of your own business within a business.

The jobYou will be dealing with the

public on a day to day basis, either on the telephone, or face to face. Your clients normally tend to fall into two categories; buyers and

sellers. It is the seller who will pay your fee (Commission) for selling his/her property. Getting to this stage can often be a bumpy, unpredictable ride and this is where you will need to call on all your resources to make it as trouble free as possible for both your purchaser and your vendor.

Perks of the jobThe job of a negotiator is

varied, and is not desk bound. A negotiator’s day is divided between the office, and taking prospective buyers out on viewings. You determine your own schedule and how you spend your time.

ProgressionCareer progression in Real Estate

is based on performance. Therefore, effort and success are not only rewarded by more commission, but also promotion. Whether you commence your career in Residential Sales or Lettings, you will normally be on probation for the first three months.

Real Estate is a hugely exciting and financially rewarding career. Here is your chance to find out more about this extremely rewarding occupation and change your life forever.

To book your spot email us: [email protected] and find out if you have what it takes.

TINA COWLEY developed the unique “Cowley technology assisted reading methods” to

overcome her son’s reading problem. Her research revealed that reading dysfunction that had in the past stigmatized many children in the education system as backward.Statistically this is a serious problem in South Africa but the Cowley reading centres are achieving an 8% to 40% increases in student averages. This is achieved through a scientific test of your child’s reading ability to fully understand the problem. They then work systemically to ensure that all micro systems work together as a macro systems to address all the basic skills of reading. After the

initial assessment the results are discussed with you, to determine what therapy will be done on a weekly basis. Students then receive therapy once a week for an hour, depending on the test results. With Cowley reading methods, results are guaranteed.Albert Einstein, possibly the greatest scientist of all time and a name we most commonly associate with genius only started reading at age 11. By the age of twelve he was a brilliant mathematician and physicist, despite not being gifted in language. If your child is struggling at school, let us help you too!

ASHTON STUDENTS SKYROCKET INTO TOP 5% OF 2015 IEB RESULTS

JEANNIE HABIG

WE did it again – celebrating another 100% IEB matric pass

by the class of 2015. ”Ashton’s matric students produced a brilliant set of results in the 2015 challenging IEB final examinations, giving the College another 100% pass rate with a 98,5% Bachelor Degree (University Exemption) pass, an increase of 5,8% on 2014,” said Joe Erasmus, Executive Head of Ashton International College. 2015 Dux Christine Brokensha and Proxime Accessit Alwyn Small clinched seven distinctions each, and both achieving A+ aggregates.

“The 65 students who wrote the exam achieved 104 distinctions between them – an average of 1,6 distinctions per candidate. Two students achieved 7 distinctions apiece, one student achieved 6 distinctions, four students achieved 5 distinctions, with 4 distinctions being achieved by three students, and five students clinching 3 distinctions,” added Mr Erasmus. 148 B symbols and 100 C symbols reflected the depth of our excellence. These figures equate to 40% of our students achieving an aggregate above 70%, with six students scoring A aggregates and two scoring A+ aggregates. 90.8% of our students achieved an aggregate of 60% or higher.

“Ashton’s continuous goal to strive for Excellence, was well rewarded in Mathematics, Accounting and Physical Sciences, with 56% of the candidates being awarded 70% and above in these subjects” said Academic and Deputy Head, Mrs Jenny van Buuren.

“Congratulations on these wonderful results, of which we are extremely

proud today. It was through your hard work, discipline and dedication that you have made yourselves, your families and your teachers proud,” she added at the announcement of the results to the parents and students.

”Ashton is incredibly proud of these amazing achievements. For a young school of only six years, this is an astonishing

feat. A total of 10 212 full time and 583 part-time candidates wrote this year’s Independent Examinations Board final examinations, recording a 98,30% pass rate.

“We are extremely delighted that the excellence that we have collectively strived for extends to all the subjects that we offer, with wonderful achievements being recorded. The zeal, commitment and tenacity of our students has reflected in their results. The students went that extra mile and pulled out all the stops to achieve their BD passes. Achieving top results is fantastic, but we acknowledge each student, who in some

cases managed to bump up their overall aggregates by two symbols. Our highly qualified and incredibly professional and dedicated teachers have empowered our students to reach their full potential, and for this we are incredibly grateful and we salute each and every one of them,” said Mr Erasmus.

We Need to Talk About EDUCATION

MURRAY BLORE

THE matric pass rate tells us a few interesting things. First that the pass rate is down because the exams are harder.

There’s no reason to be ashamed of our results going down when we raise the bar. Is South Africa not near the bottom of the world list of achievers in STEM subjects? Raising the bar is absolutely commendable, but the numbers show that our kids are battling to keep up.

The rural provinces, especially, are doing terribly - at one school (admittedly with only 10 matrics), EVERYBODY FAILED! We have to do something. The problem of school infrastructure and resource provision is a huge one, and a real legacy of apartheid which HAS to be the government’s priority. 80 children per

class?! Textbooks not getting delivered?! Never mind the simple requirement for schools wherever there are children, which are adequately built & serviced, and which have the required number of properly skilled and resourced teachers?!

The afternoon that the matric results were announced, a Department of Education spokesperson on SAFM laid out the DoE’s plans for 2016 to include technical subject schools. This idea is in line with the divisions in high schools in countries such as Germany and China. It will increase the options available to learners when they reach grade 10, and following from that, will provide the country with a more variously-skilled group of workforce entrants each year. Again, it is commendable that our country is tapping into ideas which are best-practice internationally.

Later, a provincial MEC for Education reminded us that the matric pass rate actually shows the results of a project which starts more than a decade earlier for each child – if we want better results at the close of a basic education carrier, we need to work on all the foundational phases of a child’s education first. Surely the results of any efforts in these areas will only be visible after quite a few years. I suppose this is

why the DoE was pushing for writing ANA assessments before the end of 2015 – so that they can see the measure of success of whatever projects are in place already. However, the apparent opinion of the teachers’ unions is that the ANA’s in their current form are horribly flawed.

The problems are many within the basic education of our country’s children. It would be great if our government had the capability to fix these problems on their own, but I don’t think they do.

Instead, we need to be getting as many stakeholders as we can

to be pitching in to help. Parents; community and national businesses and institutions; school governing bodies; teachers and the teachers’ unions should all be contributing to improving our education system wherever they see opportunity. Only then will we see matric results for which we can be proud; which demonstrates the results of a system which works for all the children of the country, from early childhood education all the way through to matric; and which prepares our young adults to productively enter the workforce.

JANUARY CONFERENCE SPECIAL

E live in a magnificent part of the world but how much of it do you use?

When Clare and I decided to live here instead of in Australia or Britain the things that made us decide on KZN as the best place to live became a summary I used to recite to slightly amazed friends who expected us to retire to live in Sydney or London.

It went something

like this. Where else in the world can you live half an hour’s drive from glorious beaches from which you can swim all year round. And at the same time the most beautiful mountains, their rivers and trout, are only a couple of hours drive west.

Where some of the

best wild game reserves in Africa are a three hours drive north – and where, half an hour further, the great chain of coral reefs that line all east Africa begin their thousands of kilometres of fish heaven. (Except for some dead kilometres where the Tanzanians used to swap

beer for explosives with the ANC warriors then use it on the reefs for fishing.)

Where the enormous

Pongola dam-lake towers above the magic water-and-reed world of Lalaland with its wild palms and palm-wine.

Where the kingdom

of the Zulus produces an unceasing stream of musical talent including artists of international fame, supported by the best Symphony Orchestra in Africa. Have you heard a performance of Zulu opera yet? Visited the internationally renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir in their craggy headquarters or caught Ladysmith Black Mambazo live and at home?

In the only part of

South Africa where all our component peoples live closely together with little reinforcements from Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Madagascar and a big dynamic community from India. Where a little community of East Africans from Tanzania, caught in the Arab slave-trade dhows of the 1860s, were rescued by the

British navy and released here – where they still live as a community on the Bluff.

We are, indeed, a

wonderful mix. So, you sir, when are you going to make a real trip to the mountains? And perhaps catch your first trout? And you ma’am, when are you going to sign on for a class in classic Indian dancing? It’s more beautiful than gym. And a lot cheaper. And you, son, when are you going to crew a sailing dinghy through the Point Yacht Club and the ancient Royal Natal Yacht Club classes?

My ambitions are

to get up to the coral coast past St Lucia, catch a bigger trout in the Drakensberg than my biggest so far (if you don’t catch the biggest trout they turn cannibal and eat hundreds of juveniles). To catch a bigger daga salmon off Blythedale Beach. To visit some elephant and rhino before the Chinese-paid poachers wipe them all out. To get down the escarpment to Lalaland and swig some palm wine again. Well, I could rave on but let’s talk about some food.

CARPE DIEM – SEIZE THE DAY… Remembering Derek Taylor

THE start of a new year is always a time for reflection. While I was doing some preliminary work on this first issue of Life & Style for 2016 I came across an article written for us by Derek Taylor who died at the age of 83 last year. It’s a poignant reminder of wonderful life can be if you live it to the full and… seize the day!

Thanks, Derek…until we cross the dark mountains and meet again…Dave Charles, Editor Life & Style

CHANGE YOUR LIFE – GREAT THINGS TO DO THIS YEAR How to become a new person. You won’t recognise yourself!

DEREK TAYLOR

GET TOGETHER: a chicken flattie about 1.5kg, 1tsp fennel seeds. A bunch fresh curry leaves. A bunch of dhania, chopped. 5 green chillies, cut fine. 3 cloves garlic chopped. 3cm ginger, chopped. 4—5 limes or lemons. ½ cup dry white wine. ½ cup olive oil or a little more if necessary.

Juice and zest the limes. Blitz with

all the other marinade ingredients to a quite liquid paste. Keep a few tbsp. of the paste/liquid aside for basting. Put the chicken and the marinade sauce in a plastic marinade bag and close it. Optional: add additional green herbs, more lime zest and the used lime shells if you like. Squash and squeeze the bag about to spread the paste evenly. Rest in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

TO BRAAI. It’s best to use a hinged

braai grid or grill so you can clamp the flattie inside, making it easy to turn while cooking. Line one side of the grid with heavy duty aluminium

foil bright side outside. Place bird, right side up, on top and clamp grid shut.

Cook skin-side up for about an

hour over medium coals or heat (+/- 180C) or until the juices run clear when pricked. Baste with the reserved marinade 2 or 3 times while cooking. Turn the grid over for the last 5 to 10 minutes to brown and crisp the skin.

•Natalie Cole, the Grammy-winning daughter of Nat “King Cole” who carried on her late father’s musical legacy and, through technology, shared a duet with him on Unforgettable, died on Thursday 31st December, she was 65 years old. Cole died due to complications from ongoing health issues, her family said in a statement. Cole’s greatest success came with her 1991 album, Unforgettable… With Love”, which paid tribute to her father with reworked versions of some of his best-known songs, including Too Young and Mona Lisa. Her voice spliced with her Dad’s in the title cut, offering a delicate duet a quarter-century after his death.

•David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 69.

The influential singer-songwriter and producer excelled at glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic 40-plus-year career. He just released his 25th album, Blackstar, Jan. 8, which was his birthday.

Bowie’s artistic breakthrough came with 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, an album that fostered the notion of rock star as space alien. Fusing British mod with Japanese kabuki styles and rock with theater, Bowie created the flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

GOODNIGHT DAVID BOWIE

LUISTER NET MET STEVE – MAKING RADIO HISTORY IN BALLITO

OVER the past twelve months the success of Radio Life & Style, Ballito’s first commercial broadcast radio station has been gratifying for all of us who have worked

extremely hard to make it happen.

And it is our intention to cater for as wide an audience as possible to continue to grow the listenership in 2016. This is why we experiment with programme content and personalities and specialist shows will continue to be created to cater for different musical tastes and styles this year.

Afrikaans music is huge in South Africa and we are lucky to have a presenter who understands and loves the genre bringing a fresh approach to our music line up on a Wednesday night.

The show is called Luister Net Met Steve - hosted by Steve van Greunen who has spent the past twenty years in the hospitality industry, the last eight of which he has devoted to the running of Simbithi Eco Estate and Simbithi Country Club.

But his radio roots are deep, having been part of the team that established the radio station at uShaka Marine

World where he presented the breakfast show and his hands-on musical experience is equally

impressive. He established his credentials on Mnet’s Office Idols as a crooner of note and

he still performs regularly for audiences who appreciate the musical styles of

artists like Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra and Neil Diamond. Friday nights at Simbithi are a treat with music on the deck at the Country Club performed with style and panache by Steve VG.

He is also an excellent songwriter and has had both local and international success in this medium so he really is the perfect host for our Wednesday night offering.

The response to the show

so far has been fantastic and we

look forward to an exciting year of

music, info, interviews and fun on Luister Net

Met Steve, Wednesdays from 6- 8 pm on Radio Life &

THE automotive future according to Faraday Futures looks an awful lot like a Corvette crossed

with the Batmobile. The California-based company debuted its sleek electric concept racer during the annual CES show that focuses on consumer gadgets and has increasingly become a way for automakers to show off their latest

technological feats.

The 18-month-old company that has remained much of a mystery until recently revealing its primary backer, Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting, won $335-million worth of incentives from the state of Nevada last month to build a $1-billion manufacturing facility in a hard-hit Las Vegas suburb.

Emphasizing the speed at which it will develop and build cars, the company’s Senior Vice President of Research and Development Nick Sampson said the company would deliver its first production car very soon.

Core engine technology

Sampson said the difference is that Faraday will be designing only electric cars unlike other car-makers that might have to spend more time redesigning a model to fit a hybrid engine, V6 or V8.

Sampson said: “We’re developing one core motor

technology.”The

company dubbed

Monday’s debut that included a clear fin

running half the length of the car, a single-line of a smile for a headlight and a white interior with a seat inspired by NASA design the FFZero1.

“It’s an extreme tablet on wheels,” said Richard Kim, Faraday’s head of global design, saying the concept included the ability to project images on the road much like a “digital co-pilot,” a smart phone dock in the steering wheel, tunnels below the car to funnel air through and a designed horizontal crease along the sides of the car he called the “UFO” line to signal the car was otherworldly.

It’s a “car of concepts,” he said rather than a concept car.
