POLITICALby Patricia L. Cook

This Tidbits shares some interesting election trivia. He filled the position when Wil-liam McKinley was assassinated.• The oldest president elected was Ronald Reagan who was 69. Reagan and Gerald Ford were the two presi-dents who lived the longest after serving, both living to age 93.• Young Grover Cleveland was only nineteen, not even old enough to vote, when he worked on James

Buchanan’s successful Democratic run for the presidency in 1856. After Buchanan, there would not be another Democrat in the White House until Cleveland himself was elected 28 years later in 1884! Buchanan was the only president that never married.• Reagan was the only president who had been divorced. Five presidents remarried after their wives died, two of them, John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson, while they were in office.• Six U.S. presidents had no children. John Tyler had the most, fifteen! Tyler was called “His Acci-dency” by opponents, being the first vice president called to fill the office of president by the death of his predecessor, William Henry Harrison. Harrison died of pneumonia after only being in office 32 days, the shortest term of any U.S. president. There have been short and tall presidents, with James Madison the shortest at only 54 (1.62 m). Abraham Lincoln was the tallest at 64 (1.93 m), with Lyndon Johnson only a ½ inch (1.27 cm) under him. James Madison was also the lightest president, weighing only about 100 pounds (45.36 kg). William Howard Taft was the heaviest at about 300 pounds (136 kg) and actually had a bathtub installed in the White House that would fit four normal sized men! • His size was not the most unusual thing or memorable trivia about William Howard Taft, it was his activity after he was president. He served as a Professor of Law at Yale until President War-ren G. Harding selected him to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court eight years after his service as president, in 1923. In 1925, Calvin Coolidge was the first and only president to be sworn in by a for-mer president. • Taft, said that his greatest honor was serving as Chief Justice. He wrote: “I don’t remember that I ever was President.”• When the government for the United States of America was first formed, there were no political parties. George Washington served as president with no political party affiliation. • The first political parties for the U.S. started in the late 1700s. On February 12, 1798, Thomas Jefferson wrote: “Two political sects have arisen within the U.S., the one believing that the ex-ecutive is the branch of our government which the most needs support; the other that like the analogous branch in the English government, it is already too strong for the republican parts of the Constitution.” The former were called federalists, sometimes monocrats and sometimes aristocrats, sometimes tories like the corresponding group in the English government. The latter were called republicans, whigs, anarchists, jacobins, and some-

Probiotics – The Good Bacteria

The term: microbiota defines all the microorganisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract (GI). Cats have a large number of bacteria normally in the small intestine (400 strains) and a much greater number in the large intestine (2,000+ strains). Newborns start out with a sterile gut and quickly are exposed to bacteria from their moms and the environment that make up their GI flora. There is a dynamic interplay throughout a cat’s life between the good and bad bacteria and how the body regulates internal health. A balanced GI culture provides nutrients, stimulates the immune system and enhances the cat’s defenses to respond to intestinal pathogens. Many common triggers can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and discomfort, including stress, not eating regularly, use of antibiotics and eating spoiled food. Acquired and genetically predisposed diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease are common and linked to diet and the imbalance in the GI bacteria.Probiotics or ‘active culture bacteria’ when supplemented to the diet can help normalize the GI tract. Competitive exclusion of bad bacteria (population dynamics) can shift an unhealthy bacterial mix to a healthy mix. Good bacteria decrease bacterial toxins and decrease the numbers of bad bacteria. Adding good bacteria prevents and treats GI infections and chronic disease without adding drugs. Stimulation of the immune system tends to keep the body healthy. Probiotics have been shown to help fight disease by making the body defenses stronger. Treating diarrhea to ocular herpes virus in the cat works better when active culture bacteria are administered. Good bacteria produce vitamins, inactivate poisons and protect the body by adding another barrier layer to keep bad bacteria out. The beneficial effect of probiotics is bacterial strain specific. Out of 1,500 active culture bacteria tested, only eight were found beneficial in the cat. The probiotics with a greater number of good strains appears to have a better effect on the patient’s health. Probiotics need to be safe, be able to survive passage through the GI tract, must be able to colonize in the GI tract, must be stable in manufacture/storage and the product must improve the patient’s health. A few feline specific products currently fit this criteria, many are not effective but have good marketing. Talk to your veterinarian about probiotic therapy.

Kunzite

Kunzite is a very young gemstone. In 1902 New York jeweler and gemstone specialist George Frederick Kunz (1856 – 1932) became the rst person to provide a complete descrip-tion of this stone, which had just been discov-ered in California. Tradition holds that any newly discovered gemstone is to be given the name of their discoverer or patron, hence the exotic sounding name, 'kunzite'. The allure of this gemstone is seen in its clarity and ne delicate pink nuances and a frequent touch of violet. These delicate, tender hues express a femininity and seductiveness that makes them popular for jewelry. Most kunzites show a light color and robust colored kunzite is rare and very valuable. Mr. Kunz discovered a pale pink kunzite in the Pala District of San Diego County in Califor-nia. Today, the prism-shaped crystals with their typical vertical striations are mainly found in Afghanistan, Madagascar, Brazil and the USA. The crystals, or fragments of crystals, often badly eaten away, can attain sizes of up to several kilograms.

Fireplace Basics

Q: This winter will be the first time we will use our new fireplace. Can you give us some advice on safely lighting

a fire? -- Charlie L., Oviedo, Fla.

A: Sure can! Your request comes at the perfect time, as we move into November and cold weather sets in for most of

the country. Here are step-by-step instructions for lighting a fire safely and successfully. If you own a gas-lit fireplace, skip Steps

3 and 5.1. Open the damper and visually inspect the firebox and

flue to ensure that they are clear.2. Stack firewood in the center of the fireplace, being care-ful not to place the logs too close together. The wood stack should take up no more than one-third of the space in the

fireplace.3. Place loosely rolled newspaper in the gaps created by

the wood stack, on all three sides. (Use newspaper only -- avoid magazines or color inserts.)

4. Preheat the flue. Carefully light a rolled piece of news-paper and hold the paper about 2 inches inside the flue.

Move the paper in slow circles for 10 to 30 seconds. This will encourage warm air to flow up and out the chimney.

5. Light the newspaper between the logs, on all three sides. A good-size flame should leap up shortly, but will die down as the last of the paper burns. Look for smaller flames flickering along the bottom of the logs; this shows

that the wood has caught, and that a nice, small- to medium-size fire will build in a few minutes.

6. Add wood to the fire one piece at a time. To maintain the fire’s size, add one new log for each log that burns

away. To increase its size, add one log every five minutes or so to a steady fire, and note the amount of flames and

heat after each addition. The most complicated part of fire-building, for new users, is finding the right amount of kindling to get a steady fire going. Dry twigs and wood chips can be added to news-paper; leaves don’t burn as well and are better left on the

mulch pile.Use a combination of woods for the best results: oak burns

slowly and cleanly, while pine ignites more easily and burns hotter, but is consumed quickly.

Enjoy your new fireplace, with a dose of common sense: Don’t burn trash in it, keep the gate closed and have the

fireplace and chimney cleaned once a year.

HOME TIP: Leave about 1 inch of fine ash in the bottom of the fireplace. The ash insulates the firebox and helps the

fireplace heat more efficiently.

times disorganizers. • When the U.S. Constitution was written, there was no mention of political parties. Most of the fram-ers of the document hoped that no political parties would form. They hoped the new country would be such that everyone would just “get along!” (agree!)• The current two party system, with Democrats and Republicans, has been part of the political system in the U.S. for years. The first party was originally formed from many of the advisers that George Washington consulted with. Oddly the first political party, started in 1792, was called the Democratic-Republican Party.• Many changes have happened with the political parties through the years. Smaller parties have tried to gain power but have never been very successful. The Republicans and Democrats are still the main newsmakers. • Canada has also been a country dominated by two political parties, today the Liberal and Con-servative parties. An interesting time in Canadian history was when there were seven distinct political parties in the legislature in 1854. • The Canadian parties at the time were four groups from Northern Canada: 1) the Tories, 2) moderate Conservatives, led by the first Prime Minister of Canada, John A. Macdonald, known as “Sir John A.,” 3) Baldwin Reformers, who were moderate Liberals, 4) and the Radical or advanced Liberal party, known as the “Clear Grits.” The other three parties were from Lower Canada. They were: 1) Parti Bleu, the majority of the French Canadians, considered a liberal party even though most French Canadians were conservative, 2) the Parti Rouge, which was a small party of French Canadian Liber-als, some who were rather radical, and lastly, 3) an English-speaking minority in Lower Canada. • People all over the world get fed up with politics. At a parliamentary election in Naples, Italy in 2008, a 41-year-old man ate his ballot in protest to the country’s politicians! He was charged with destroy-ing election materials.• In 2004, a woman in England was fined for trying to register her cows, Henry and Sophie Bull and her dog, Jake Woofies, as voters. Her barn was listed as a separate property and when forms asked who the residents of the property were, she listed the ani-mals! • For a last Tidbit on elections, imagine the confu-sion if our North American countries had the diver-sity of over 1,000 political parties! According to the Election Commission of India, that is the estimate of parties that exist in India. The commission has a list of symbols that political parties can use to represent their groups, including a kite, diesel pump, kettle, pressure cooker and many others. As you vote, be glad that we do have elections and that our ballots don’t contain pressure cooker and kite parties!

Halloween’s OVER, I’ve Thrown Out All That Candy – Now What?

Q. Just like you said, I’ve been brushing my child’s teeth three times a day – for 20 (TWENTY) min-utes. How long should I keep up that “60 minutes per day” tooth brushing routine?

A. Did I really say “Brush for 20 minutes, three times a day” ?

Oops! I checked, and I did say that – and found that “typo” in the last two Tidbits. (Unlike USA’s national debt, that one little extra “zero” probably will make a big difference in compliance!)

Here’s the correc-tion - without the extra “zero”: Brush two times daily for 2 MINUTES (and floss just the teeth you want to keep).

All of you par-ents who have been brushing your child’s teeth 20 minutes, three times a day, or making sure they do, deserve the “Congressional Medal of Honor for Parenting”!

Q. Where can I get great information on how to keep my child’s teeth and gums healthy for a life-time (besides right here in Tidbits, of course) ?

A. There’s a great new website recently launched by a coalition of 35 prominent dental organizations,

known as the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives. It is the first-ever joint children’s oral health campaign with the Ad Council. Media Partners for the Campaign include Sesame Street, Dream Works, Cartoon Network (This is going to be BIG.)

Dr. Joe Blaes, editor of Dental Economics Maga-zine, states:

“The new campaign will teach parents and caregivers…..as well as children about oral health and the simple ways they can prevent oral disease….fewer than half of parents (44%) report that their children brush their teeth twice a day. While most parents understand the importance oral health and their children brushing their teeth, they are not aware of the serious consequences of not taking care of their children’s teeth.”

Still Time to Set Up Owner-only 401(k) for 2012

If you’re a small-business owner, with no full-time employees (except

possibly your spouse or busi-ness partner), you’re probably used to taking care of just about everything on your own. So, if you’re thinking of establishing a retirement plan — and you should — you might also be attracted to “going solo” with an “Owner-only” 401(k).

An Owner-only 401(k), sometimes known as an Individual 401(k),

has been around for a few years now, and has proven quite popular — and with good reason. This plan is easy to establish, easy to administer and, most importantly, gives you many of the same benefits enjoyed by employ-ees of a company that offers a traditional 401(k) plan.

These benefits include the following:

Tax deferred earnings — Your earnings aren’t taxed as they accumulate. Tax deductible contributions — An Owner-only 401(k) consists of two components — salary deferral and profit sharing contributions, both of which are gen-erally 100 percent tax deductible. If you choose to make Roth salary deferrals to your Owner-only 401(k), your contributions aren’t deductible, but you won't pay taxes on your earnings, provided you don’t take withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2 and it's been five years since your first year of Roth deferral. Variety of investment choices — You can choose to fund your Owner-only 401(k) with a wide range of investments. And you can construct an investment mix that’s appropriate for your risk tolerance and long-term goals.

Furthermore, an Owner-only 401(k) can potentially allow you to make greater contributions, at an identi-cal income level, than other small-business retirement plans, such as a SEP IRA. In 2012, you can defer up to $17,000, or $22,500 if you’re 50 or older (as long as you don’t exceed 100 percent of your income). Then, in addition, you can make a profit-sharing contribution equal to 25 percent of your income (slightly less if you are unincorporated). So, by combining the salary defer-ral and profit-sharing components, you can potentially contribute up to $50,000 to your Owner-only 401(k) in 2012, or $55,000 if you’re 50 or older. And these figures are doubled if your spouse also contributes to the Owner-only 401(k).

However, you’re not obligated to contribute anything to your plan. So, if your business is slow one year, you might scale back your contributions, or put in nothing at all. Then, when business picks up again, you can get back toward contributing whatever you can afford, up to the maximum.

Clearly, the Owner-only 401(k) can offer you some key advantages in building resources for retirement. But it’s not the only small-business retirement plan on the mar-ket, so, before you make a decision, you may want to consult with your tax and financial advisors to determine if an Owner-only 401(k) is indeed the right plan for you.

But don’t wait too long. You’ll have to establish your Owner-only 401(k) by Dec. 31 if you want to receive any tax deductions for 2012. And in any case, the sooner you start putting money away, the faster the progress you will make toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

Bankruptcy Basic Information (part 2):

Chapter 7 is a liquidation bankruptcy. This means the case admin-istrator, known as a Trustee, can liquidate any assets the bank-ruptcy filer has that are not protected and claimed by law, through exemptions. Any money collected is distributedto creditors.

Under Colorado law, certain protections are afforded for items such as homestead equity, motor vehicles, householdgoods, clothing, and retirement accounts. Bankruptcy is intended to afford a fresh start to filers, but is not intended to strip them of necessary items. Many people who file forChapter 7 do not lose any property.

The repayment plan of Chapter 13 allows the filer to keepitems that may not be protected in a Chapter 7 liquidation. Instead of having the property liqui-dated, the value of the non-protected property is paid back through a structured repayment plan. The Chapter 13 Trustee distributes the paymentsto creditors.

FORUM QUESTION: Do I have to include my doctor's bill, car loan, and personal family loan in bankruptcy?

ANSWER- Yes. You mustlist all financial obligations that you owe on the date you file for bankruptcy. Options exist that allow a filer to keep financed items (such as a vehicle) after bankruptcy.

***If you have general questionsabout bankruptcy, email them to [email protected] . Select questions will be printed and answered in the next Tidbits installment! The foregoing information is not intended to be, and should not be, construed as specific legal advice

¥ On Nov. 24, 1849, John Froelich, the inventor of the first internal-combustion tractor, is born in Girard, Iowa. Froelich and investors formed the Waterloo Gaso-line Traction Engine Company. The Waterloo Tractor Works, owned by John Deere since 1918, remains one of the largest tractor factories in the United States.

¥ On Nov. 22, 1900, the first car to be produced un-der the Mercedes name is taken for its inaugural drive in Cannstatt, Germany. The car was specially built for Emil Jellinek, a fan of fast, flashy cars. He bought 36 of them. In exchange, the company agreed to name the car after Jellinek’s 11-year-old daughter, Mercedes.

¥ On Nov. 19, 1915, British airman Richard Bell Davies performs a daring rescue, swooping down in his plane to whisk a downed fellow pilot from behind the Turkish lines. The British government awarded him the Victoria Cross.

¥ On Nov. 21, 1934, teenager Ella Fitzgerald wins Amateur Night at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. Putting her name in the hat on a bet, she’d originally planned a dance number. History was made when she changed her mind and sang “The Object of My Affection.”

¥ On Nov. 20, 1945, a series of trials of accused Nazi war criminals, conducted by a U.S., French and Soviet military tribunal based in Nuremberg, Germany, be-gins. Twenty-four former Nazi officials were tried, and half would be sentenced to death by hanging.

¥ On Nov. 23, 1959, Robert Stroud, the famous “Bird-man of Alcatraz,” is released from solitary confinement for the first time since 1916. For 15 years, Stroud lived among canaries brought to him by visitors, and he be-came an expert in birds and ornithological diseases. In 1943, Stroud’s Digest of the Diseases of Birds, a 500-page text that included his own illustrations, was pub-lished to general acclaim.

¥ On Nov. 25, 1963, President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated three days earlier, is buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. An eternal flame was lit by his widow to forever mark the grave.

THOSE FARMERS...

An old farmer got pulled over by a young state trooper for speeding. The trooper, fresh on the job, decided to throw his weight around and started lecturing the farmer about his speed. He did his best to make the farmer feel uncomfort-able but eventually got around to writing the ticket.

As he wrote, he had to swat at several flies that were buzzing around his head. "Having some problems with circle flies there, are ya?" asked the farmer. ... The trooper stopped writing the ticket and looked up. "Well yeah, if that's what they are," he said. "I never heard of circle flies, though." "Oh, they're pretty common on farms," said the farmer. "We call 'em circle flies because they're always circling around the back end of a horse." "I see," said the trooper as he continued writing the ticket.

All of a sudden, he stopped and looked up at the farmer. "Hey...wait a minute, are you trying to call me a horse's ass?" "Oh no, officer," replied the farmer. "I have far too much respect for law enforcement and police officers to even think about calling you a horse's ass." "Well, that's a good thing," said the trooper as he resumed writing the ticket. After a long pause, the farmer continued. "Hard to fool them flies, though."
