Archaeological excavations have revealed the oldest known zoological collection in Hierakonpolis, Egypt, believed to have been created by Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut around 1500 B.C. The oldest continuously-operating zoo in the world is Vienna, Austria’s Schonbrunn Zoo, established in 1752, and still receiving more than two million visitors annually. It also holds the honor of being the first place to host the birth of an African elephant in captivity. • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the site of America’s first attempt to establish a zoo, creating a charter in 1859. However, construction did not begin immediately due to the advent of the Civil War. In the meantime, New York City opened Central Park Zoo in 1864 and grabbed the honor of the first public zoo in the U.S. turn the page for more!

TIDBITS® TAKES A FIELD TRIP

ZOO (continued):• Although the word “hippopotamus” translates

from the Greek for “river horse,” this herbivorous mammal is more closely related to the pig. It ranks third in size in land animals, right behind the elephant and rhinoceros. Baby hippos are born underwater and weigh about 100 lbs. (45 kg) at birth. By adulthood, one might weigh as much as 5,800 lbs. (2,631 kg). Hippos eat about 88 lbs. (40 kg) of food daily. At one time, hippos’ ivory canines, which reach 20 inches (51 cm) in length, were used by dentists for artificial teeth because they don’t turn yellow. In a zoo environment, a hippo will live about 50 years.

• Even with its enormous bulk, the rhinoceros can trot along at 40 mph (64 km/hr). The word “rhinoceros” translates from the Greek language, rhino meaning “nose” and ceros meaning “horn.” A baby rhino enters the world weighing about 140 lbs. (63.5 kg) and can grow to about 7,000 lbs. (3,500 kg).

• You think your blood pressure is high? Consider that of the giraffe, whose pressure is two to three times higher than that of a healthy human. That’s because of that long neck! The heart of a giraffe measures 2 feet (.6 m) long and weighs 25 lbs. (11.3 kg), enabling it to pump blood with enormous force up the neck to the brain. The average giraffe stands about 19 feet (5.8 m) tall, 6 feet (1.8 m) of which are its legs. At birth it was already 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, and had endured a 6-foot drop to the ground head first! The baby calf is up and walking around only one hour after birth. An adult giraffe can weigh up to 3,000 lbs. (1,360 kg) and lives about 20 years.

• The sleek cheetah, the world’s fastest mammal, can reach a speed of 45 mph (72 km/hr) in two seconds from a standstill. It then accelerates to its top speed of nearly 65 mph (104 km/hr). Yet just 300 yards farther on, exhaustion sets in, and the animal must slow down. Half of the cheetah’s running time is spent off the ground, and it can even make a turn in mid-air!

• An African elephant weighs upwards of 6 tons (5,443 kg), stands 12 feet (4 meters) tall at the shoulder, and has a trunk about 7 feet (2 meters) long. It consumes about 300 lbs. (136 kg) of food in a day, and sucks up about 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of water into its trunk each time it takes a drink. The elephant is second behind human beings in longevity, with many elephants living well past age 70.

• A gorilla may look gargantuan, but in truth the average male gorilla stands only about 5”7”

Most Nutritional Research Is Obesity Related

The search for the fat gene and an easy way to modify it is the driving force in modern nutrition. Let’s face it, we have fat humans, fat dogs and fat cats that are getting fatter with time. Eating has become an obsession in our society. ‘Good nutrition’ and “super-size it” are buzz words that really do not equate to a balanced diet. Surviving in hard times allowed the fat retainers to build nutritional stores while the skinny individuals would starve. In times of plenty the fat retainers grow fatter and less healthy and the skinny individuals maintain a healthy body weight. The current state is that our whole society (humans and domestic animals) is getting fatter.

Obesity is the number one health problem doctors are seeing, and that is where the money is going. Nutritional research by human drug/nutritional companies is where most of the effort is going. Cross-over data will help our domestic pets. One of the big problems in sharing scientific information is the secrecy surrounding the patenting of new breakthroughs. The collected data is proprietary so the companies/universities involved want the right to patent any potentially profitable ideas and products. Follow the money and that is where the breakthroughs will be coming from.

Spin offs from the obesity research involve antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, arthritis supplements, low carbohydrate diets, higher protein diets, vitamin supplementation, mineral supplementation and anything that involves nutrition and related diseases. Look at any health problem and nutrition is related. Heart diets, cancer diets, liver diets, kidney diets, arthritis diets, pain diets, body builder diets, dieting diets – you name it and there is probably a diet that fits. Beware: diets and nutritional consultations involve a lot of money so everyone is an expert. The big pet supply stores (you know the ones) all have paid agents from the store or the food producers that ‘hawk’ their foods as being the best . . . often without any scientific basis. Many people believe that a young store employee knows more than trained nutritional specialists and veterinarians. The biggest challenge is to feed your cat well for a lifetime. The perfect feline diet has not been made – except for mice and birds.

STRANGE BUT TRUEby Samantha Weaver

¥ In this season of bitter partisan rivalries, it would be well to remember the following sage observation: “Do not trust to the cheer-

ing, for those persons would cheer just as much if you and I were going to be hanged.” The man who first made that observation was Lord Protector of England Oliver Cromwell, considered by some to be a hero of liberty, by others to be a regicidal dictator. He died in 1658, probably from septicemia. He was

so reviled that, three years later, he body was exhumed so that he could be posthumously executed, his body thrown into a pit and his

head displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall.

¥ Those who study such things say that if all the gold in the world were combined in one lump, it would result in a cube that measures

20 yards on each side.

¥ If you’re planning a trip to Lima, Peru, you might want to add Puente de Piedra to your sightseeing list. Though the Spanish name means “Bridge of Stone,” the span is popu-larly known as the Bridge of Eggs. Legend has it that in 1608, the builders the used the whites of 10,000 seabird eggs in the mortar

that holds the stones together.

¥ Pumpkins are native to the Americas, not Europe. This is why the original jack-o’-lan-

tern was a turnip.

¥ What do the words “obscene,” “tranquil,” “mediate,” “catastrophe,” “dire,” “critical,” “vast” and “apostrophe” have in common? All of them appeared in print for the first

time in the works of William Shakespeare.

¥ If you’re contemplating a move to Corpus Christi, Texas, be sure to keep in mind that in that town, it’s illegal to raise alligators in

your home.***

The one drill you need !According to Bobby Clamptett, TV commentator and teacher, tour pros’ swings bottom out four inches in front of the ball. “ The iron makes contact with the ball and continues on a downward path. If you can do this, you’ll hit the most solid shots ever’, Clampett says. A drill Clampett uses to test the bottom of the swing is to scratch a line in the turf with a tee and try to strike down on the line. “ Address the line as if it were your ball, and make a real swing trying to make a divot in front of the line. Keep making swings along the line until you are consistently cutting the divot in the right place. Then hit some balls and do the same.”

Iolite: Gemof the Vikings

Viking explorers were the rst to use thin pieces of iolite as a polarizing lter that allowed them to determine the exact position of the sun and thereby navigate safely between their homeland and the New World. The property that made this possible was the extreme pleochroism (the prop-erty of certain crystals of exhibiting dierent colors when viewed from dierent directions under transmitted light) of iolite. This gem has a variety of colors visible in dierent directions in the crystal. A cube cut from iolite will look blue/sapphire from one side, crystal clear from the other, and a honey yellow from on top. The same property (pleochroism) that makes iolite useful as a tool for navigation creates prob-lems for the cutter. Iolite must be cut from exactly the right direction or its colors will not be as brilliant. The name iolite comes from the Greek ‘ion’, which means violet. It is a purplish blue when cut prop-erly and it has a softness that makes it very pleas-ing to the eye and increasingly popular for use in jewelry. The deeper the blue the more valuable the gemstone, but overall, iolite is quite aordable. The Vikings probably got their iolite from deposits in Norway and Greenland, however, today It is mined in India, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Brazil.

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

Ceramic Tile Floor Marred by Scratches

Q: My kitchen has a ceramic tile floor, and several of the tiles have so many scratches that they look dull even after cleaning. Can I repair the scratches, or does the tile need to be replaced? -- Carol in Eau Claire, Wis.

A: Glazed ceramic tiles are tough and resistant to most of the wear and tear that happens in high-traffic areas, but they can still become scratched or dull over time. If the scratches are minor -- they mark the finish but don’t go all the way through the color glaze -- it’s possible to polish them out.First, clean and mop the floor so that you have a clear, debris-free surface to work on. Next, starting with the first scratched tile, apply a small amount of brass cleaner/polish to the scratch with a lint-free cloth, rubbing in cir-cles. Let the polish dry, then buff away. If you don’t have brass cleaner, toothpaste or baking soda can be used.To temporarily protect the tile surface, apply a bit of car wax -- a plain paste wax, not cleaner wax, which has an abrasive in it -- to the tile.Tiles that have been scratched too deeply to buff out or that are cracked or broken should be replaced. Locate ex-tra tiles, if you have them, or purchase matching replace-ment tile (you may need to take a piece of the damaged tile, once removed, to match the color). Use a grout saw to carefully cut away the grout around the edges of the damaged tile. This creates a little wiggle room to loosen the tile without damaging surrounding tiles. Next, using a hammer and small chisel, gently tap the tile loose. (Place the chisel on or near the damage rather than at the edge of the tile where other tile might be damaged.) It’s OK if the damaged tile chips or cracks -- save it to do your color match.Once the tile is removed, brush or cut away debris or loose adhesive. Fit the new tile into the open space; if the tile fits correctly, apply a coat of tile adhesive to the back and fix it so that the spacing between the tile’s edges and the edges of the other tiles is even. Let the adhesive dry completely, and then fill the edges with grout that matches the color of the surrounding grout. HOME TIP: Scraps of carpet and extra tiles are important to keep around for small repair jobs. Store them in one designated place, like a box or on a shelf in the garage, until needed.

(1.7 m) tall. He is a hefty fellow, however, weighing in at 330 lbs. (150 kg). The female is much smaller, averaging 176 lbs. (80 kg). The lifespan of these very peaceful, family-oriented creatures in the wild is about 35 years, but they will live to about age 50 in a zoo.

• An adult male lion eats about 15 lbs. (7 kg.) of meat at a meal, although some might consume as much as 60 lbs. (27 kg) at one sitting! The full-grown adult male will weigh somewhere between 330 and 550 lbs. (150 – 259 kg) and can run at top speed of 36 mph (58 km/hr), although not for very long. In the wilds, the King of the Jungle isn’t the great hunter you might think he is – he actually leaves more than 90% of the hunting to his female companion. Lions are the only big cats in which the appearance of males and females is distinctly different. The roar of a male can be heard as far as 5 miles (8 km) away.

• Bear with us! An American black bear will reach about 660 lbs. (299 kg) at maturity, and a grizzly bear tops out at 860 lbs. (390 kg), but it’s the polar bear that takes the prize, a whopping 1,760 lbs. (798 kg)! It’s the only bear that will actually prey on humans. Humans aren’t their first choice, however. In their natural habitat, they prefer seal pups, and can smell a seal on the ice 20 miles (32 km) away. The bears frequently eat only the seal’s fat just below the skin, ignoring the rest of the carcass, making for an extremely fatty diet. Yet it doesn’t seem to slow them down! A polar bear can sprint along at a speed of 25 mph (40 km/hr) for short distances, as well as jump a 6-ft.-high (1.8-m) pile of snow.

Gary Lasater – candidate for RTD District “G”

After serving Parker’s Mayor and Councilmember for nearly 17 years, people are asking why am I running for the Regional Transportation District Board seat? I am run-ning because I feel, as many have voiced, that we are NOT being fairly represented by the current incumbent. Our services seem to be eroding though our District is poten-tially paying a good amount of funds to RTD, proportion-ately more than other district areas. The ratio of funds to services seems to have a huge imbalance. I would like to represent our entire district to work to make sure our

existing services are not cut or reduced and see what can be done to enhance things. More can be found at www.GaryCARES.com.

On the local Parker front I would like to give you my endorsements for Mayor and Town Council. For Mayor, Adele Laurent. She is new to elected office, but not to volunteering in Parker. She brings the life experience ma-turity the other two candidates don’t have. Being a single mother, a world champion high platform and cliff diver for over 30 years, former small business owner, she brings a well-rounded understanding of our community needs and would represent Parker in the best light.

For Council, my three picks are Debbie Lewis, Bill Wright, Joshua Rivero. Debbie and Bill bring maturity that is sorely needed on Council. With David Casiano and I leav-ing the Council, this create a vacuum of over 26 years on Council and a combined age of 123 years of life experi-ence. Bill and Debbie represent long-term residents and 30 year business experience. Joshua as the owner of Fika Coffee in downtown has proven experience as a business person as well as working to promote the local community.

Basic Bankruptcy Information (part 1):

There are two distinct options for consumers throughbankruptcy: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. While either optioncan lead to a forgiveness of dischargeable debts, thedifferences between the two chapters are significant.A Chapter 7 is considered a straight bankruptcy. Generallyit takes approximately 4 to 6 months from the datea case is filed until the time when the anticipated Orderdischarging qualifying debts enters.Chapter 13, on the other hand, is a repayment plan. Theminimum duration for a plan is 3 years and the maxi-mumis 5 years. Once payments are completed, a discharge ordercan enter. The repayment plan can be a viable tool foraddressing mortgage arrears, tax liability, vehicle loans, and many other areas of concern. For either Chapter, an appearance at a Meeting of Creditorsis required. The Meetingis automatically sched-uledand typically takesplace about a month, to amonth and a half, after thecase is filed and typicallylasts about 5 to 15 minutes.

Master, Academy of General Dentistry

Protect Your Little “Monsters” teeth from Harm This Halloween

Q. What can I do keep all that sugary Halloween candy from turning my child’s mouth into a

“nightmare”…..and a big dental bill?

A. Relax! Your child can have Halloween fun without harming their teeth. According to the

Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), more than 90 percent of children will go trick or treating this year, and return home with bags full of candy. (Let’s face it: Most households don’t give out the “good stuff”, do they?

Just a few preventive steps can make a big difference:

1. Chew Sugar-Free Gum, especially the kind that have the sweetners Sorbitol and Xylitol actually help prevent cavities. Not only is this a smart choice to drop into those little monsters’ Halloween bags, parents can also give it to their child to help neutralize the sugary-snack effects after eating. These special sweetners are effective in combating the bacteria and their harmful acids that eat away at the enamel of the teeth.

2. Chew just about anything: Chewing stimulates the flow of saliva, which cleanses the teeth.

3. Rinse immediately after meals and snacks: Swish-ing and rinsing with water helps wash out stuck food particles and helps neutralize harmful decay acids. BUT……..if you wait 20-30 minutes to rinse, it’s too late. The acids are only strong enough to attack in the first 20 minutes after a meal or snack.

4. Avoid the sticky stuff: Even some healthy foods, such as “sticky” fruits and nuts can lodge in the in-between areas and in pits and grooves of the teeth. (Raisins are really bad with a double whammy – they’re loaded with sugar AND very, very sticky!)

5. Avoid Soda and other sugary and acidy drinks. Both “regular” and “diet” sodas can harm the teeth. The sugar in the “regular” and the high-acid chemistry of both attack enamel. Also, reduce the “frequency” of exposure. It’s better to “chug-a-lug” the entire can, than to “sip” small amounts over a period of time, since with each exposure the acid attacks the tooth for

20-30 minutes.

6. Now for the obvious: Brush three times daily – for 20 minutes, and don’t forget to floss too.

Remember – you don’t need to floss ALL your teeth – just the ones you want to keep!

KEEP YOUR TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY FOR A LIFE-TIME

You can Ask the Dentist by calling Dr. Burgner at 720-870-9500, or consult his website: www.ParkerLum-ineers.com Dr. Burgner has served on the Fellowship Examination Committee of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and received national recognition awards from that 30,000 member organization. He has also been recognized in the local magazine 5280. He practices General Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Parker, Colorado.

Q: I can’t remember which cable network it was on, but I really liked a series with female stand-up co-medians hosted by the red-haired actress from “The Office.” Can you tell me what network it was on and whether it will return for another season? -- Karen M., Columbus, OhioA: You are thinking of the TV Guide Network’s original comedy series “StandUp in Stilettos,” which is hosted by Kate Flannery. I am happy to report that it will be back for a second season beginning Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 p.m. ET/PT. As you know, the show features three stand-up comedians per episode, and this season’s scheduled guests include Thea Vidale, Cory Kahaney, Cathy Ladman, Luenell and Laurie Kilmartin. ***Q: I remembered reading a while back that they were bringing back the sketch-comedy show “In Living Color.” Is that true? -- Carrie in LouisianaA: I spoke with Kali Hawk -- who co-stars as Shelby on Fox’s “New Girl” and also stars in the “In Living Color” reboot -- and she’s not sure when it will air either, although she assures me that they shot the pilot episode/special, and it’s hilarious.“We taped the special, and it was going to be a two-part special to air sometime in the fall,” Kali said. “But I haven’t been told what’s going to happen with it, whether it’s going to air or when, or if it’s not going to air at all. I really don’t know. It’s just crazy because people ask me about it so often. There’s so much ex-citement about that show, but I don’t have any details that I can give out.”Working with the show’s creator and first-rate comedi-an Keenan Ivory Wayans was a highlight for Kali. “It was definitely fun working with Keenan. The man is a legend. The characters from the original installment are still so relevant today. It was really neat to get to work with somebody who created something like that, something that has such long-lasting appeal.”***Q: I am a fan the show “The Finder.” What will happen now that Michael Clarke Duncan has passed away? -- Curtis H., via e-mailA: Fox announced in May that it would not be renew-ing the freshman series, which aired as a midseason show from January through May 2012. The death of “Finder” co-star Michael Clarke Duncan, 54 -- who passed away in September from complications after suffering a heart attack in July -- had nothing to do with the show’s cancellation. Michael completed three movies before his death: “The Sibling,” “The Chal-lenger” and “In the Hive,” which will be released posthumously. ***Q: Could you please tell me if “Body of Proof” was canceled? -- Kathleen E., via e-mailA: The Dana Delany-starring medical-mystery drama will be back for a 13-episode third season on ABC come midseason -- which most likely means January or February 2013, although no official premiere date has been provided as of this writing.

Time to Observe "Save for Retire-

ment Week"

October 21 through 27 is National Save for Retirement Week, established by Congress to remind Americans of the impor-tance of — you guessed it — sav-ing for retirement. So why not mark the occasion by considering ways in which you can boost your own financial resources for those years in which you’re officially a “retiree”?

If you’re somewhat concerned about your financial prospects

during retirement, you’re not alone. Check out a few of the findings from the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s 2012 Retirement Confidence Survey:

Just 14% of workers are very confident they will have enough money to live comfortably in retirement. Sixty percent of workers report that the total value of their household’s savings and investment, excluding the value of their primary home and any defined benefit plans, is less than $25,000. More than half of workers report that they and/or their spouse have not tried to calculate how much money they will need to live comfortably in retirement.

In these challenging economic times, it can be chal-lenging to pay your living expenses and still have money left over to save for retirement. But you can take some steps to help your cause. Here are a few to consider:

Pay yourself first. Every time you get paid, move some money — even if it’s only a small amount — from your checking or savings account into an invest-ment. Make it easier on yourself by having your bank move the money automatically. Boost your 401(k) contributions. Whenever you sal-ary goes up, increase your 401(k) contributions. Your money can grow on a tax-deferred basis, which means it can accumulate faster than if it were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. “Max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k), you’re probably still eligible to contribute to an IRA — and you should. A traditional IRA can grow tax deferred, while a Roth IRA’s earnings are tax-free, pro-vided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59½. For 2012, you can contribute up to $5,000 to your IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. Control your debts. It’s never easy, but try to reduce your debts as much as possible. The less money you need to devote to debt payments, the more you can add to your investments. Build an emergency fund. Try to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living ex-penses, kept in a liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping into your retirement accounts to help pay for unexpected costs, such as a big doctor’s bill, a new furnace or a costly car repairs. Create a retirement income strategy. It’s important to project your living expenses during retirement. Then, once you have at least a good estimate, you can create a long-term strategy — involving your investments, re-tirement accounts, Social Security benefits and all other financial resources — to help you achieve the retire-ment income you will need. To calculate these figures and develop such a strategy, you may want to work with a financial advisor.

National Save for Retirement Week will come and go quickly. But your retirement could last for decades — so do everything you can to prepare yourself.

¥ On Nov. 7, 1776, Congress chooses Richard Bache to succeed his father-in-law, Benjamin Franklin, as postmaster general. Franklin invested nearly 40 years in the establishment of a reliable system of delivering mail. He was fired in 1774 for opening and publishing Massachusetts Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson’s correspondence.

¥ On Nov. 5, 1895, Rochester, N.Y., patent attor-ney George Selden wins U.S. Patent No. 549,160 for an “improved road engine” powered by a “liq-uid-hydrocarbon engine of the compression type.” With that, as far as the government was concerned, George Selden had invented the car -- though he had never built a single one.

¥ On Nov. 10, 1928, the first installment of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Erich Maria Re-marque’s acclaimed novel of World War I, is first published in serial form. Remarque’s realistic depiction of trench warfare from the perspective of young soldiers was eventually translated into more than 20 languages.

¥ On Nov. 11, 1942, Congress approves lowering the draft age to 18 and raising the upper limit to age 37, increasing the number of draftees. During the first draft in 1940, 50 percent were rejected for health reasons and 20 percent of those who regis-tered were illiterate.

¥ On Nov. 8, 1951, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra is voted the American League’s most valuable play-er for the first time in his career. He went on to be the league MVP twice more, in 1954 and 1955.

¥ On Nov. 9, 1965, the biggest power failure in U.S. history occurs as all of New York state, and parts of seven neighboring states and eastern Can-ada are plunged into darkness. The blackout dur-ing the evening rush hour trapped 800,000 people in New York’s subways and stranded thousands more in office buildings and elevators.

¥ On Nov. 6, 1977, the earthen Toccoa Falls Dam in northeastern Georgia gives way, and 39 people die in the resulting flood. A volunteer fireman had inspected the dam and found everything in order just hours before it suddenly failed, sending water approaching speeds of 120 mph thundering down the canyon and creek.
