Not long ago, I walked into my office

and found a beautiful little paper box

on my desk. A soft seafoam green, it

has a bit of sparkle and a fabulous

shape, so I was especially excited to

see what was inside.

I found lovely wallpaper samples inspired

by the Walt Disney film Fantasia and

created by the designers at York

Wallcoverings. With help from the folks

at Disney, the designers isolated pieces

of original Fantasia artwork that they

translated into wallcoverings. Based on

what I’ve seen, they did a brilliant job

marrying the right amount of sparkle

and whimsy with a sophistication that

feels grown-up (but fun).

Contemporary combinations like

the melding of various metallics, are

cropping up, helping to give timeless

looks a distinct 21st century feel.

Pattern

From bold and whimsical to organic

and geometric, pattern is helping to

set today’s offerings apart from

yesterday’s wallcoverings. Florals have

gotten a makeover and are increasingly

popping up on papers. “Designers and

their clients are gravitating toward

updated floral designs in bold colours

and large-scale graphic interpretations

of traditional designs like paisley and

damasks,” says Hinton. “We’re seeing

tastes in home decor more closely

mirroring clothing fashion trends

these days.”

Texture

Technology is helping to add new

dimension to wall coverings. These days,

designers can take their pick of a bevy of

textured looks. From wallpaper enhanced

with sand to textural damasks, raised

inks and deep embossed patterns,

choices are wide and varied. For clients

who want to raise their bling quotient,

there are even wallpapers featuring

Swarovski Crystals on them.

Custom

For a truly personal space, many

designers are turning to custom-made

wall coverings from companies like

Rollout. The Vancouver-based creative

studio designs and digitally prints custom

wallpaper by the square foot. Their

provocative and sometimes surreal prints

have popped up in some pretty

impressive places including the

Mercedes-Benz Star lounge during New

York Fashion Week and television’s

Extreme Makeover. “Technology (print

and paper), business models (print on

demand and no minimums) have caught

up with people’s desires to create

customized and personalized pieces that

truly represent their own personal or

corporate brand,” says Anita Modha,

one of the founders of Rollout.

For anyone who’s ever painstakingly

removed tiny strips of old wallpaper,

the idea of letting anyone glue paper —

however stunning it may be — onto one

of their walls is likely a frightening

thought. But wallpaper has proven

to be a major comeback kid. “It’s a

whole new world this time around

for wallcovering, says Melissa Hinton,

marketing manager for Crown Wallpaper

& Fabrics in Toronto. “New technology

is making wallpapers simpler to hang

and remove, and even easier and less

messy than paint.”

These days, there’s truly something for

all tastes and every room in the house

including kitchens and baths. Here, a

look at just some of the driving forces

behind this year’s offerings.

Colour

Blue, in all its glorious variations, is one

of the hottest colours in wallcoverings.

Soothing aqua and watery blue hues are

particularly popular. But, according to

Crown, its got plenty of competition,

including golden hues, eco-greens, navy

and indigo and the many shades of grey.

Chocolate is proving it’s just as delicious

on walls and pinks, from soft blush to

bold fuchsia is definitely pretty.
