March 2007 AGM & SEDA Show Night

The SEDA Show Night in march combined with the AGM ensured anotherbusy night for all. Pete Atkins (Music Box) and Andrew Stotesbury (GoldenIris Mobile Disco) were present, with apologies from Simon Henderson (Thebest DJ in Town). We were also sorry not to see Chris from Glosticks UKarrive – the poor chap broke down on the way to the show night, and spentmost of his evening at the roadside awaiting recovery! Mixmash also sentapologies as they had to pull out at the last minute due to sickness.

As usual, Gary and the 118 twins from Denon were there to demonstratethe Denon range of DJ products, and Andrew Stotesbury brought his newNumark D2 for us to play with.

SEDA regulars included the SEDAshop for all your consumables, the newSEDA members bring’n’buy table run by Andrew Broughton, Nelly B's promocorner, and a new feature - the Show 'n' test. The show 'n' test is where wepick a particular type of product, which are displayed and tested alongsideeach other for comparison. This featured a comparison betweenconventional 300W PAR56 lamps and 18W LED PAR56 cans.

The AGM part of the Show Night was dealt with swiftly and the committeefor 2007/2008 was elected as listed at the top left of page 1 of this newsletter. As the accounts were not ready, an EGM will be called for the July2007 Show Night to present and approve these.

Details are just trickling through of a brand new "pay-2-play" website whereyou can win some amazing DJ items. Prizes change on a weekly basis, andas well as the winning DJ benefiting from new equipment, charities alsobenefit from the competition. Unlike other pay-2-play websites, the odds ofactually winning are very realistic, i.e. you're not up against thousands ofother DJ's all trying to win the same item.

By the time this Seda Mail gets to you, the first competition will be wellunder way! So, as well as trying to bag yourself some new gear, help acharity at the same time!

New Music Review Written by Neil Brown

Could be No.1 Top Ten Top Forty Maybe Maybe Not

MINIMALISTIX: – ‘Whistling Drive’ mp3 Mostiko TBA

There is only one sensible comment here—The Dogs B*ll*X— This is just one fantastic piece of commercial trance that is goingto make the summer worth all those parties. Whistling for a drive time success is pretty original, and for a dance track it ispretty much a first. Peak time this will have everyone enjoying themselves, and by the end of the summer, it could prove to beone of this years big ‘Must Play’ tracks.

LIFESTYLERZ ft. HONEY COUTURE: – ‘Creep Delight’ Incentive/Product TBA

Pretty good piece of house this, with its addiction to those swirling low bass lines and short vocals to accentuate it. The dubbyfeel to the instrumentals works really well. Tried and tested for commercial floors and with the infectious vocals this will beanother summer party success.

MIGHTY DUB KATZ: – ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ mp3 Southern Fried Records TBA

This is probably the DJ’s best armoury tool from the year dot. Well titled as a piece of dramatic funky magic that will ensure itssalsa rhythms drift everywhere to ensure pleasure at any party. Could it finally get a top chart position? You bet

FONZERELLI: – ‘I Love Music’ mp3 UMM Records TBA

Plenty of potential on the remixers’ decks with a powerful house based sound. The dubby production of the ‘Yer Man Remix’does hide its best features away from the light though. Well worth the plays and airtime, but I would put money on it beingmashed up before it gets a chance at the charts. Cool cuts will be easy like this, as it does have something different.

ALLEY CAT DOGS: – ‘How Freaky’ Lemon Records 14th May

The original Red Rhythm edit is very much a firm pop song, with it’s Errol Brown type vocal, and it has a riff from ‘Yarboroughand Peoples’ running through it. This is a highlight. With a magic bass line like that, it is set to soar. The remixes take it toanother level, and the whole thing is a million miles from their earlier tracks.

MICHAEL GRAY: – ‘Somewhere Beyond’ Eye Industries TBA

Michael Gray has a magic touch and a leaning towards Trance sounds fused with house where possible that is very easy to like.He also seems to concentrate on sounds for the Summer Mediterranean clubs that cross over to commercial with just a littleediting. This is yet again another gem from a guy who doesn’t get enough credit for producing great works. There is however amix missing… An extended Original with full-blown drops and builds. Come on Michael, where is it?

ALIBI Vs ROCKERFELLA: – ‘Sexual Healing’ Gusto TBA

Yes it is the classic song done in a totally new Club way. Freemasons do a great job of extricating the good bits, and remakingall the rest. The ErickE Remix is a little insipid by comparison to that and the first class club workout fro Dennis Christopher.

PINK PUNK: – ‘One More Remix’ Freeport Records 8th.May

This is definitely a set to listen to a few times to realise that it is a pretty powerful redefinition of the lines drawn in the groundshowing music rules. You could say the book has been thrown out totally, because innovation has just taken over. Sometimeslike U2, and sometimes like Prodigy, but only vaguely, because when the rap hits either way, there is a Mathers and DJ GreenLantern infusion and Orb style production. Mad it may be, but let’s not forget there is a fine line between madness and genius.I like their daring attitude.

SOUL FACTORY: – ‘Everyday’ mp3 Blue Dove Records TBA

Funky Disco House is where this is. Vocals echo the Gipsy kings in places, and the summer is getting oh so close now. 8-beat heaven is Fridaynight on the commercial floor. The rhythms are set to fair, and the floor is buzzing. Save the Dreamerz mix until late for best effects.

Resources for SEDA members

The SEDA website resources page now has the 2008 and2007 availability templates in excel for SEDA members todownload and use when sending availability sheets totheir agents:

http://www.seda.org.uk/documents/avail_2007.xlshttp://www.seda.org.uk/documents/avail_2008.xls

Mini product test: Re-useable cable ties.

Instead of using miles and miles of insulatingtape each year to keep all your coiled cablestogether, why not use re-useable cable ties?I use clear/white ones 8 mm in width by200mm in length for a l l mymains/speaker/interconnect cables and theywork a treat. I leave them connected to thecable when in use and they are always 'tohand' at the end of the gig, instead of tryingto remember where you put the insulatingtape. These are available from Maplin inpacks of 100 for around £5.65, or elsewhere.

MIXMASH Party Classics reviews by Neil Brown

SCISSOR SISTERS: –‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancing’Volume 3 Disc 1 Track 1: With floating heads andsome very vivid colours encompassing so manyoverlays, this video is very eye-catching. The detail isincredible and whatever screen you see this on, you willbe hooked to it as much as the science-fiction feast thatis before you. This will be a classic party track, and withthe video to enhance it it can be played anytime.

RICK ASTLEY: –‘Never Gonna Give You Up’Volume 3 Disc 1 Track 4: Who can miss out thatwonderful video of Rick Astley trying to move smoothly.Yes it was embarassing, but you can watch it now andsmile knowingly that it was him looking a pratt, and notyou. Again very colourful and entertaining, that old 8-beat disco works everytime. Wasn’t it a good job theygot in some professional dancers too.

B52’s: –‘Love Shack’ Volume 3 Disc 1 Track 12:Pretty disjointed as it was with the farmyard animalsand a car journey telling the story of the song. The liveparty scenes give it a big boost, and loads of colour inevery pixel. Who let the old guy in? Dirty Dancing itisn’t, but it is a party record that gets plenty of spinsand is worthy of time on the big screen.

LULU: –‘Shout’ Volume 3 Disc 1 Track 14: You willneed to be pretty daring here, but if you must, then trymixing it out of one of the ‘Shadow Dancers’ scenes.Don’t ask why, but this was recorded some forty yearsago, and it still seamlessy blends with moderntechnology in an offbeat way. How you program thesong is up to you, but we know that the oldies oftenrequest it still. Lulu still on stage after all this time mustat least equal Tom Jones.
