FREEDOM: MORE SPACE FOR JASE Local couple Amy Platt & Jason Horton moved to Canowindra from Orange in September last year, after Jason survived an unexpected, life changing accident. In April 2011, when driving home from Canberra Jason was involved in a single vehicle crash near Young and trapped for 5 hours. After being found by passersby, he was airlifted with a severed spinal column to Woden Hospital, then transferred to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. Jason came home to Amy after 5 months of recovery and rehabilitation, moving into their specially modified house. Prior to his accident, Jason worked as a fencer with his Pop, shared an active lifestyle with Amy and their children: Dylan 7, Amika 6 and Tayla 5, which included regular camp- ing trips and short holidays. Although relatively new to Canowindra, the couple have embraced our community, running Bingo one day a week at the Canowindra Bowling Club, and once a month Amy assists Sue Shorten with the Friendship Group held at the Uniting Church. To enable Jason, Amy and family return to the freedom they previously enjoyed, they have, with support from the Canowindra Lions Club, started fundraising to purchase a new vehicle. The NSW Government's Lifetime Care & Support Scheme allows one vehicle per lifetime to be modified at no cost. Their current vehicle is not suitable, as when Jason's wheelchair is stowed in the boot, nothing else will fit. After much research Jason and Amy have found a cost effective solution to suit their needs, a new Kia Carnival. This vehicle will allow Jason the freedom to store his wheelchair, the kids safely seated, and the controls for him to drive. The modifications will assist him in regaining his independence and afford the opportunity for retraining so he can return to the work force. A number of fundraising activities are being planned to help Amy and Jason reach their target of $40,000, however you can donate now directly into The Canowindra Lions Club's account at Canowindra NAB, or online, using BSB 082 500 and account number 509583827, noting Jase as the reference. Donations over $2 are tax deductible, so get in last minute deductions before 30 June 2012 for your tax returns, you will be helping a worthwhile cause and local family. Mr Fleming, , received . Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling paid tribute to Mr Flem- ing who will retire in August after more than 25 years at the helm of the Council, “It has been a real privilege for Cabonne to have a manager of Graeme’s standing. “He is one of the most experienced and highly regarded professionals in Local Government and this honour is extremely well deserved.” The Mayor said that when Mr Fleming arrived at Cabonne, the Council was in a precarious financial position with debts of $9 million and struggling to meet its day-to-day commitments. “Through Graeme’s exceptional financial management, Cabonne is now one of the most financially sound in New South Wales,” Cr Dowling said. After starting his Local Government career and univer- sity studies in Condobolin, Mr Fleming worked on coun- cils in Bega, Cooma and Gilgandra before becoming the Shire Clerk at Barraba in 1983 at just 28, making him the youngest in the State. He was still the State’s youngest shire clerk when he moved to Cabonne four years later. Mr Fleming said the most satisfying element of his 39-year local government career was working with Councillors, staff and the community for the benefit of country communities. “I’ve also taken great satisfaction in seeing staff develop and progress their careers, particularly through our own organisation,” he said. “Our staff development program where we have been able to recognise talent and grow our own staff has been one of the key achievements during my time at Cabonne.” Mr Fleming said other notable projects included: The timber bridge replacement program. At the end of 2012 -13 all but three of 59 timber bridges will have been replaced by concrete structures; The Waluwin Community Centre at Molong Australia’s first fully integrated primary health and community care facility; A record $12 million allocated to road improvements in the current financial year; The new council chambers and office extensions; One of the State’s first self- replacing plant funds which has given Cabonne one of the most modern and best equipped plant fleets in NSW; and the establishment of the Wellington Blayney Cabonne Strategic Alliance with savings and benefits to its member councils of more than $4.2 million since its inception in 2003. During his time at Barraba and Cabonne, both councils won the prestigious A.R. Bluett Award which recognises the best council in NSW. In September last year, Mr Fleming received one of Local Government’s highest accolades by being appointed one of three trustees for the Bluett Award, only the fourth Local Government manager in 75 years to receive the honour and in February he was appointed chairman of the trust. Congratulations Graeme, what a great honour to receive on the eve of your retirement.

SESQUICENTENARY OF ESCORT ROCK By Dorothy Balcomb

All roads will lead to Eugowra next Saturday 16 June when there will be great celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Escort Rock Gold Robbery of 15 June 1862. One group heading to Eugowra for the afternoon will be members of The Police and Bushranger Descendants who have planned a weekend based in Bathurst visiting bushranger sites. After visiting Coombing Park in the morning they will arrive at the Royal Hotel Canowindra for a talk by Peter Smith at 11.15am before a barbecue lunch catered by Canowindra Lions Club at 12 noon in the courtyard behind the hotel close to the site of the old Canowindra Inn, twice held up by Ben Hall and gang in 1863. The group plan to leave Canowindra at 12.45pm for Eugowra Showground, returning to Bathurst at 3.30pm. Of interest, another fascinating Canowindra bush-ranger story has recently come to the notice of the Canowindra Historical Society. A policeman from Auburn Police station called at the Museum in April, seeking information on the burial place of Senior Constable John Herbert, who was accidentally shot by another policeman John Cook and a black tracker in the hills near Mogong and Nyrang Creek on the night of 28/29 March 1865. Cook had thought Herbert was one of the bush-rangers approaching in the dark. At this time, there was an all-out search for the bushrangers who had held up a store in Forbes and headed for the hills in the Eugowra-Canowindra direction. Extra police had been brought to the area and stationed at Canowindra to capture the bush-rangers who were making a mockery of the police and there was a big reward for their capture. The wounded John Herbert was brought into Canowindra and Dr Rowland from Carcoar was called to attend him. Dr Rowland had to travel from Carcoar by horseback as did the messenger who went for him. Dr Rowland removed the bullet that had passed through Herbert’s liver and lodged in his groin but he died in Canowindra on 13 April and was buried ‘in the same place’ the next day. The only burial place in Canowindra at that time was on Belubula station. The writer has been amassing a file of early newspaper reports of the incident, the later trial in Bathurst of Constable Cook, who was acquitted, and the awarding of a pension of 40 pounds a year for ten years to Herbert’s widow and two children. Ben Hall was finally captured and killed near Forbes a few weeks later on 5 May 1865.

SECOND LINEAR ACCELERATOR FOR CENTRAL WEST RADIATION ONCOLOGY SERVICE The Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research, Jillian Skinner, and the Member for Orange, Andrew Gee, announced the purchase of a second linear accelerator for the Central West Radiation Oncology Service at Orange. “The NSW Government is committed to expanding cancer services for the people of regional NSW,” Mrs Skinner said. “This second linear accelerator, at a cost of $3.659m, has been jointly funded by the NSW and Commonwealth Governments and has been expanded to meet the growing demand for this service from residents of the central west of the state.” Mr Gee said the linear accelerator has been ordered and the vendor has advised that it should arrive at the Central West Cancer Care Centre in August 2012. “This extra capacity will mean that more residents from Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst and all surrounding areas will be able to receive their radiotherapy treatment locally, with the support of other clinical services provided as part of an integrated cancer care centre,” Mr Gee said. Mrs Skinner said the success of the Central West Radiation Oncology Service in its first year of operation is to be applauded. “The establishment and expansion of comprehen-sive cancer centres in regional areas has had many positive benefits for local cancer patients. They can now stay with family and friends while having treatment during a very difficult time. “With this additional linear accelerator, and the availability of the accommodation for patients and their carers at the Western Care Lodge, the Cancer Care Centre will now be able to treat around 350 more residents from across central and western NSW,” Mrs Skinner said.
