Die eerste Oktoberfees het in 1983 plaasgevind met 10 stalletjies en sowat 420besoekers op die Saterdag wat die fees gehouwas. Vandag 27 jaar later het die fees gegroeina 140 stalletjies, gazebo's, karavane en 5000plus besoekers. Oktoberfees is seker dieoudste fees in die Weskaap!

Danksy stalletjies, hek inkomste en 'n paarklein borge kon ons al baie verrig. Donasiesis al geskenk aan CHOC, Kansa, Skole,minder bevoorregtes en bydraes totbegrafnisse.

Missie: Ons werk saam met borge en

donasies deur hulle te adverteer om teondersteun. Daarom het ons 'n leuse vir onssaamgestel: "Help ons om ander te help".

Visie: Ons probeer hard om groter borge te krysodat ons meer en beter kan doen, om die fees tekan uitbrei, nie net om die feesgangers tevrede testel nie, maar om ook groter winste te maak ommeer te kan doen vir ons naastes, en om diepubliek van Kraaifontein bymekaar te bring.

Iknow All Hands On Dec Friends is about childrensuffering from cancer, but there are some events,close to our hearts that we simply must support.

Another one is National Bandana Day on 14October. You can support those suffering fromleukaemia and buy a Sunflower Bandana for onlyR20 at your nearest Pick N Pay. The fun part is, isthat on 14 October you can wear it to work and yourboss can’t say a thing. Leukaemia normally attackschildren, but I am sure you all know JeremyMansfield, a popular Johannesburg DJ, who hasbeen diagnosed with it as an adult. The SunflowerFund recruits willing donors. A stem cell bone marrowtransplant could not have saved Declan but there aremany children it could help and so I urge you toseriously consider signing up as a donor. We oftenthought of how devastated we would be if it couldhave helped Dec and we couldn’t find a match. Youcould save a life and a family from the horror of losingtheir child. My mother’s birthday are coming up 24thOctober, she passed away in January,and because she loved gardening thisstory really touched my heart.

"One Sunday, a few days after mymother's memorial service, I was sittingon my back stoep thinking of my mother. Iwondered if she was there, at the service,and did she enjoy it, when all of a suddena beautiful butterfly flew into the yard. Itsat on one of the flowers long enough forme to get my camera and take somepictures as it fluttered from flower toflower. Then it flew behind me, touchingme as it passed, and flew to the stoepwhere it fluttered around some plants thatwe had at the church for her service.Finally it chose the one I loved the bestand there it settled for a few short minutesso I could snap a picture.

When I had the pictures developed it wasso beautiful that I used it as a thank you

card for everyone who helped me getthrough this very difficult time. Inside thecard I wrote:"I know she came to tell me thank youand to let you know she sends herprayers and thanks you too for all thecomfort you gave to her family.Remember that according to the legendthe butterfly is the soul of a loved one.And according to the legend, to make awish come true, whisper it to a butterflyand upon its wings it will take it to heavenand grant your wish, for butterflies are themessengers of the spirit. May all yourwishes come true."

Breast cancer - a death sentence ?Breast cancer is a collection of diseases. Somecases are more aggressive than others. With advances inchemotherapy, hormonal and gene therapy, it israrely necessary to perform a mastectomy. Amastectomy should not be offered as first treatment.Its application is restricted to very specific cases.

What if the lump is too big ?There is a strong possibility that some cancercells have already found their way via the bloodstream to other parts of the body (bone, lung orliver). These cancer cells that went astray(micro-metastasis) can not always be detectedwith the available tests such as x-rays andscans. With a large tumour there is more than a70% chance of micro-metastasis. Systemictreatment (chemotherapy ± hormonaltherapy) should then be administered to shrinkthe tumour and at the same time kill thecells outside the boundaries of the breast. If thetumour has shrunk sufficiently, it can be removedwith good cosmetic results - resulting in far lesstrauma and mutilation for the patient.
