The carols were a great way to fi nish school and welcome Christmas. More lights on the perimeter at carols so excited children can be

Thank you for your fantastic contributions over the past year. I’m very proud to be the Eumundi Green editor and caretaker of your stories. The Green goes from strength to strength – an amazing achievement in an era of struggling print media – and that’s because of its passionate readership (you), talented volunteer writers and photographers, three incredible accounts women, one very clever and creative designer, a group of eagle-eyed volunteer proofers, a patient printer, an extremely generous team of delivery vollies and our ECCO caretakers who always have our back. But there’s literally no magazine at all without our advertisers - thank you for keeping the printing press turning and the computer power on.

With the holiday season upon us, many people will be leaving home for a while. To keep your expensive IT equipment safe, simple answer is turn it off AND unplug it from the wall. During storm season your devices don’t need to be switched on for a lightning strike to travel through the wiring and blow up your equipment. Unplug it for complete peace of mind.

Speaking of peace of mind, why not take the opportunity to clean-up your PC before you go away as well? Just run some of the free tools I’ve mentioned in past articles like CCleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware,and Defraggler. Also go into Control Panel and check ‘Programs & Features’ – uninstall programs or toolbars you see in the list that you don’t ever use. Be careful not to uninstall a system required program though! And if you are still running XP, treat yourself to a new computer at Christmas as come April XP will no longer be supported and will quickly become extremely insecure and unsafe to use. Next Chamber breakfast meetingThe major topic for the fi rst meeting of the year will be the sale of holdings comprising Butter Factory site previously owned by TLC Prestige Developments (Receivers and Managers appointed). Geoff Edwards from the Bendigo Bank outlined the bank’s approach to provide excellence in banking services and giving back to Eumundi and other communities.Members are reminded that Friday 3 January, the last night of the Summer Night Markets, is also the annual Eumundi volunteers nights – rsvp to secretary to be included for refreshments.

If you fi t into any of these groups then Eumundi Chamber of Commerce(ECC) would like to hear from you. ECC is poised to start a small business mentoring program and is seeking volunteer mentors and small business owners. The program will be based on, and guided by, Noosa Chamber of Commerce’s (NCC) highly successful program which has been operating for some time, helping business owners improve their performance and grow their customer base.

At the September meeting of ECC, Peter Chenowith and Julien Cahn from NCC spoke about the program with a view to ECC commencing its own under NCC’s auspices. The response was enthusiastic and I was appointed to start the ball rolling.

Two businesses will be able to take advantage of the Noosa mentoring program each month for the next six months. During this time, Noosa will assist with the selection of Eumundi mentors and their training. By the end of the six months, it is envisaged that Eumundi will have suffi cient mentors to offer the program independently.

How does the program work?

Mentors Being a mentor is a voluntary activity. Mentors are business leaders who are now retired or semi-retired and have two hours to spare a week. They receive training and then work with small business owners. The mentor decides availability, plus who you mentor and how often. Mentors will be invited to meet

Are you a Eumundi and districts business owner whose business is not performing as well as it should? Perhaps you want to grow your business to its full potential? Are you a retired person who had a successful business and are willing to help others? Do you have two hours spare to mentor a small business owner?

the other mentors at a one day training session to provide an understanding of the mentoring systems used to ensure a highly professional service. The mentor can end the mentoring relationship at any time, and may mentor any number of businesses. If you have not had experience with small business, this is not a problem as the tools of big and small business are remarkably similar.

Mentees Small businesses with an ABN/ACN that can show six months trading and revenue, are located in the Eumundi and districts area, which have less than 25 employees and are looking to improve performance. The business owner is usually the one to undertake the program, but often in a family business both partners participate. Businesses can be established

but need to show growth and improved performance potential. The business can be any kind.The program aims to help owners fi nd new directions or improved processes that will give them impetus for the growth.

What is the cost? The business mentorship is $200 for one year, and the business owner must become a member of the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce, (included in the charge). Businesses may be matched with a number of mentors over that year, depending on needs.

In my last column I fl agged that a timber bus shelter on Caplick Way in Eumundi might need to be removed due to its deterioration and, from what I understand, it’s limited use by locals. If you have any feedback about the shelter in relation to keeping or possibly removing the building I’d be more than happy to hear your comments at [email protected]

More work will be undertaken at Eumundi State School on the bottom car park during the Christmas holidays. Council will widen the entrance for safer ingress and egress of traffi c. I will also be further investigating additional all-day parking on the northern side of Caplick Way just opposite the school, another project for the New Year.

I like to make sure I’m in Eumundi regularly so I can catch up on what’s happening locally and I’ll be at the Eumundi markets on Wednesday 22 January 2014 from 10am to

midday – come along for a chat, it would be great to hear from you.

In the New Year, Council will consider the future of the Eumundi Scout Hall, so keep an eye out for more information and to have your say about the most appropriate use for the Eumundi Scout Hall into the future.

Night market and Christmas tree light up Eumundi

There was a good turnout of locals to kick off the Eumundi Summer Nights market last Friday. Along with an incredible array of delicious foodstalls, there was also music, a free Christmas movie and a Christmas craft activity for the kids with Kait. The evening also saw the lighting of Eumundi’s fi rst community Christmas tree thanks to ECCO. Santa arriving via fi re engine to give out lollies added to the excitement.The summer nights on Fridays will be happening until 3 January.

It was a fitting finale to the year and a historic day for the Eumundi Swim club, when two teams represented the club at the Qld State Championships last Saturday. Competing in the under 12 medley relay, the girls team narrowly outdid the boys with an 11 second improvement on their personal best (PB). The boys can also be proud of a five second improvement on their PB! Everyone contributed to a memorable day of participation and pride. Last Thursday night, Julie Robinson was the Club’s VIP guest and she spoke about the significance of competing at the State Championships

and some key elements to consider. One addition to the “certainty” in swimming that she highlighted would have to be that the Eumundi swimmers just keep getting better! The opportunity to swim alongside their idols like James Magnussen and Melanie Schlanger was the icing on the cake.

The new blue grass courts are finished and open for business. Why blue? It makes the ball easier for the players to see. It also makes the bugs more visible to the kookaburras if their recent activity is anything to go by.

The club has a vibrant new committee who are keen to ensure the new courts and refurbished facilities are enjoyed. We will be focussing on having fun and on bringing new families and members to the club. We intend to hold a Hit and Giggle Social Tennis and BBQ fundraiser on the last Friday of each month from 5.30 – 9pm, starting Fri 31 Jan. All of the

community are welcome - not just members of the club. We are very fortunate in our resident coach Andrew Taylor who is also the Junior Development Officer on the committee. The junior program is strong and growing stronger with Hot Shots, Junior Squads, Special Olympics and Active After School Programs. For the adults, the club is very active in the Noosa District Tennis Fixtures competition and the Mid-Week Ladies Day Tennis. Speeding traffi cCan anything be done to slow down the traffi c on the “speedway” which is Memorial Drive, heading north from Eumundi? There is no 50kph sign as you leave the town. There is a 60kph sign after the roundabout at Viv Hull Drive.

The traffi c speeds down the hill to the roundabout and then races away towards Cooroy. The police are there from time to time but they are thin on the ground.

A 50kph sign needs to be at the speedbump near the old service station and the 50kph limit should be extended to past the new bus stop. School children walking to and from school are forced to cross the road because the path goes to the western side of the road and the speeding traffi c is a defi nite hazard for them as there is no marked pedestrian crossing.

The traffi c needs to be slowed down BEFORE someone is killed.

This year Eumundi Green supported Eumundi State School’s (ESS) extension English students with mentoring and by publishing their fantastic articles and photographs. The standard produced by this talented group of local kids was very high. To acknowledge their hard work Eumundi Historial Assoc and Eumundi Green presented some of standout contributions with a certifi cate of merit and a book voucher at the fi nal ESS assembly of the year. Markets and Arts

As with everything in life, when it comes to trading at Eumundi during the silly season you get out what you put in. Heading into my third Christmas/New Year period as a permanent Wednesday and Saturday stallholder at Original Eumundi Markets, I’m putting into practice things that I have learnt over the last few years. More often than not people come to the markets to enjoy a relaxed day out, soak up

the atmosphere, indulge in the amazing food on offer and treat themselves with purchases from the vast array of stalls. However at this time of year people are on the hunt for gifts, armed with a long list of loved ones they need to fi nd unique, affordable gifts for. This is where the stallholder needs to become a little savvier in merchandising their wares.

Make it simple for customers

People need to make their money stretch further, so the key is to make life simple for customers. Offer gift packs, free gift wrapping, free shipping, use signage that takes the guess work out of it for the customer e.g. “Every Mum should have one of these,” or, “the perfect gift for Dad this Xmas.” Be prepared to think outside the box and adapt your selling style to the different buying style for this period.

Be Organised

Make ‘to do’ lists, keep an eye on stock levels, use social media to drum up business, ask for help if you need to (there will be plenty of time to catch up on sleep in February).

Practice what you preach

We are all for customers supporting “handmade” and “locally grown” and encourage them to buy from us rather than the shopping centres. We need to do the same and take time to wander through the markets and see how many names we can cross off our ‘to buy for’ lists. It’s also great to be able to make suggestions to customers if they’re looking for something different than what you can offer.

Enjoy it

It only happens once a year! Don’t take it too seriously. Customers gravitate more towards stallholders who are positive and appear to be enjoying what they are doing and not simply there for the money – the $s are just a bonus for all the work we put in. If all else fails, grab a coffee, some rocky road and a bottle of wine on the way home, (well it works for me). Merry Xmas!

The magic of Christmas

Season’s Greetings

The ECCO community Christmas tree attracted a large local crowd for the ceremonial switching on of the lights on the fi rst night of the Summer Night markets. Congratulations to the team co-ordinated by Matt Blak responsible for the tree design and the emphasis on recycling in decoration. Children are welcome to continue to add decorations to the branches provided at child height until Christmas.

We wish our community and visitors a happy and safe Christmas and good health and prosperity in 2014. Our board and our three member organisations thank you for your contribution to community spirit and well-being during the past year. We look forward to continuing to improve Eumundi and district through quality community services. Annie Wilson

Because I’ve been studying this year my reading has been focused almost solely on that, so I’m really looking forward to reading for pleasure over summer.

I’m most looking forward to reading a little book called Aboriginal Stories of Australia by A.W. Reed, a collection of traditional myths and legends that promises to be really interesting. I also plan to tackle another 20 or so titles that I’ve been stashing away over the year!

I loved African Eulogy by Bud Higgins. Bud’s words totally immersed me into the land, beauty and adventures of Africa- a land I haven’t visited, but have always been fascinated with.

The tragedy of the story and how Bud wrote with such emotion moved and released some of my own grief. I found the book very humbling, and it left me feeling very appreciative of the life we have around here.

When I close my eyes and imagine my Christmas camping holiday, I see my girls riding their bikes or swimming at the beach and I can see myself quite clearly reading And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini.

I have had a year of big deadlines and small stolen moments reading non-fi ction so I’m totally ready for some beautifully written, moving and inspiring fi ction.

Hosseini delivers on all levels!

My selection is Play Little Victims by Kenneth Cook. Two mice named Adamus and Evemus survive the end of the world. They then try to re-create society based on their ability to reproduce, and their often simplistic interpretation of the only information available: a single copy of the bible and 4,268 editions of the New York Times. Reading through the 90 odd pages you fi nd yourself laughing out loud, sometimes cringing, and often rethinking some of your own values.

I’ll be reading Alex Ross’ history of 20th Century classical music, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century. Modern composers have created a confusing array of sounds. Their experiments with atonality etc. challenge, and yet their infl uence is experienced everywhere in jazz and fi lm soundtracks through to the minimalism of electronica and beyond. Hopefully The Rest Is Noise will fi ll in some blanks.

As a closet follower of The Simpsons and a bit of a closet numbers junkie too, I’ll be coming out and indulging in The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets.

The Miles Franklin Award winner, Michelle de Kretsers’s Questions of Travel, has piqued my interest with its exploration of questions around travel and tourism, refugees and immigrants among other related themes.

Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies was a fi nalist for the 2008 Booker and I read his In an Antique Land several years ago. That novel gave a fi ctionalised, fascinating look into medieval Indian Ocean trading history but managed to be a great contemporary yarn as well. Set in 19th century India, Sea of Poppies is more novel, less history - a great adventure story. An easy summer read, but with a bit more protein than the usual summer brain candy.

Kon Hepers

My book choice is Spy and Counterspy by Ian Dear. Now that Australia has been caught out making Neighbourhood Watch far too personal, it would be interesting to read how the “real” spies went about their business.

I suspect some made their trade-craft extremely personal. Traitors and/or patriots, they mingled with the enemy and took great personal risks in gathering “humint” (human intelligence).

Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North is fi rst up for my book club, so that’s a defi nite. The book is based on Flanagan’s father’s experiences as a prisoner of war on the Burma highway in World War II.

I’m not usually drawn to war stories, but this one has received great reviews. Hope it’s not too harrowing. Might have to add a Jo Nesbo to balance it out.

It would seem that winning has returned to the minds and hearts of the Australian cricket follower, so with hands fi rmly on the Ashes why not revel in the cricketing successes of yesteryear courtesy of former skipper Ricky Ponting’s autobiography At the Close of Play.

A discovery of hidden truths, emotions both on and off the fi eld and a great delve into the life of a Aussie sporting great.

HeritageEumundi Remembers – Beryl Valmay Templeton Alan Templeton

Born in 1923, Beryl Valmay Eaton was without a doubt a glass half full person - she was always adding to the glass – constantly fi lling as she fed, entertained, supported and helped countless friends and relatives.

Val’s story really began at around age 15 when she left her parents, Elizabeth and Jack and brothers Desmond, Sydney and Lester in Belli and went to work in Brisbane. First at the Golden Circle Cannery, then a paper bag factory, before being apprenticed to a tailoress where she learned pattern-drafting and dressmaking – skills which she diligently applied for a lifetime as she reared her daughters and made dresses for them and innumerable other local women.

It’s hard to imagine that teenage bride of 17 marrying Norman Allan Templeton and moving back to the Sunshine Coast hinterland of Eerwah Vale in December of 1939. Much less envision Val as a young mother of Hazel the following year. There was no TV in those days so son John wasn’t too far behind and Shirley quickly followed. Those fi rst three kids

were born at Sunnybrae Private Hospital in Eumundi (Ellen Morris’s sister Marion assisted Nurse Luke with the births). Five years later Allan Junior came along. Penny and Ricki arrived almost 10 years on, in May of 1959.

Her married life was a baptism of fi re. Through all those years of child rearing (almost single handed) and marrying off six children, Val helped with the rapidly growing farming enterprise. She was called a farmer’s wife but she was every bit a farmer in her own right. if If she couldn’t get out onto the farm, Allan brought the farm to the house by frequently putting the produce for sorting on the verandah.

Not only did she feed her own family but there was also a seemingly never ending cavalcade of live-in workers, relatives and ever present friends of her children at her dinner table. She was ether Aunty Val or a second Mum. Meals were never mere snacks; meat and three or more veg were standard, often soup as well, and desert; massive homemade and home grown

fruit salads. Meat, butter, bread and other essentials in those early years were delivered by the cream truck on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; supplemented by vealers that were slaughtered by Allan’s brother, Mac. There was always a place at her table when someone blew in and always a shoulder to lean on. Other regulars were Val’s mother Elizabeth Eaton, Allan’s younger brother Gordon, and brother-in-law Mac, who she cared for after his legs were amputated. Of course, during the war years there were the Italian POWs who, the still very young Val, provided tucker for. And then there were the Guy Faulks nights when up to a hundred people would converge onto the hill opposite the homestead every year to celebrate with big bonfi res and fi reworks.

Val and her husband Allan were very active in the Eerwah Vale State School P &C, and the Eerwah Vale Hall committee and square dancing club. They were also foundation members of the Eumundi Presbyterian Church, which celebrated its 60th anniversary this year and Val was there to cut the cake. She was even into politics: enlisted as a member of the Country Party at age 21 by David Low MLA, she narrowly missed out on pre-selection. She was a tireless worker for the Country and National parties; campaigning for both State and Federal elections.

Then there were those 21 years as the unoffi cial Lady Mayoress of Eumundi. Allan was the local counsellor, but Val was the hostess with the mostest to the many dignitaries – one of her personal highlights

was being presented to Lady Di when she visited the Sunshine Coast in 1978 when she was acknowledged with a Community Service Award.

Two institutions stand out as hallmarks of Valmay’s community work. The Eumundi Markets which she and Allan strove to establish and then fought fi ercely to defend when certain “powers” were hell bent on closing them down. The other would be the Debutant Balls, from 1957-1988. Thirty-one years of turning countless awkward country girls into princesses and young men into some semblance of Deb partner.

Val and Allan were always regulars at the country dances from Kenilworth to Lower-Kenilworth, Belli, Eumundi, Verrierdale, Yandina and Palmwoods. Growing up in the Templeton household, the ability to participate in ballroom dancing was mandatory and Val’s grandchildren continue her legacy as champion ballroom dancers.

Val was also an active member of; Eumundi QCWA (International Offi cer), Eumundi Sports and Gymkhana/rodeo (catering), School of Arts Committee, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Historical Society, Eumundi Markets, Eumundi Centenary Committee, Back to Eerwah Celebrations - the list goes on. Val also oversaw the transformation of the Eumundi School of Arts hall from a two story building to a single story.

Val lost husband Allan in 1996. But Val wasn’t done yet, two years later she married David. Married-life with David was a totally different proposition from Allan and so Val settled into a new, quieter life-phase at her unit in Noosaville. When David passed ten years later she decided to settle for just being Grandma.

Val was a phenomenal woman with a wonderful passion for her family, community and friends.

She is sorely missed by six children and their partners, 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild and a league of friends.

Christmas is almost upon us and with it comes the ever present urge to over indulge in Nana’s Christmas pudding or Aunty Jean’s rum balls – and there’s always room for one extra prawn isn’t there? Whilst the bountiful festive spread is hard to resist, there are a few simple guidelines to help prevent the post Christmas bulge.

First and foremost, drink plenty

of water – maintaining your hydration will help to prevent hangovers and aids in digestion and absorption of food in your intestines.

Secondly, eat until you feel comfortably full, not so that you need to undo your belt to let out your gut – there really is no need to go back for that second helping!

Next, try to set yourself limits for the treats you really love. For example, say to yourself that you will only eat one rum ball and stick to it! Limiting your alcohol intake is an obvious one but also stick to low carb beer and avoid sugar laden mixers for spirits.

Finally, if you already exercise, don’t stop over the festive season. It’s OK to scale things

back slightly but remember that movement is the key so try to stay as active as possible. Even a long walk after lunch is a good start. If you’ve not been exercising in some time, why wait for New Year's resolutions? Start now and kick off your journey to better living.

Drownings on beaches and coastal waterways have reached the highest in nine years according to the 2013 National Coastal Safety Report conducted by the peak body for coastal safety, Surf Life Saving Australia.

While the report shows the lowest rate of swimming and wading deaths in the nine years since 2004, it shows that deaths are increasingly occurring outside the red and yellow flags. The National Coastal Safety Report points to other activities as the leading cause of death, representing over three quarters of the 121 coastal drowning deaths recorded last year.

Surf Life Saving Australia President Graham Ford said that the report presents the Surf Life Saving movement with the challenge of matching community needs for life saving services across the coastline - not just on the beach. The report also shows the demographic at most risk was the age group 55-69 years. “Drowning rates amongst tourists are not as high as many would believe – the highest increase is amongst baby

boomers,” Mr Ford said.

“Swimming deaths accounted for less than one quarter of all deaths with the remaining three quarters of drownings occurring during activities such rock fishing. No deaths happened between the flags,” Mr Ford explained.

• Individuals 65-69 had the highest drowning rate

• 44 (36%) were known to be of a foreign ethnicity

• 9 (7%) were international visitors

• 30 (25%) occurred between 2pm-5pm

• 77 (64%) occurred outside of the summer months

• 30 (25%) were swimming/wading

• 18 (15%) were boating

• 17 (14%) were rock fishing

• 14 (12%) were using non-powered watercraft

• 64 (53%) occurred at a beach

Pee Wees Helen Hepburn

I call them Pee Wees, you might call them Mudlarks or even Magpie-larks, but whatever you call them, these are amongst our better known and much loved birds. Pee Wees (Grallina cyanoleuca) are found over most of the Australian Mainland, but not Tasmania and some areasof Western Australia where the driest desert prevails.

Thesebirds are so familiar to us all I won’t worry about describing them. The only thing I need mention is the male has a black throat and the female a white throat. Pairs of pee wees are very territorial.

The little pee wee in the photo was a rescue bird from our local Eumundi Wildlife Centre. She had been fed and looked after for many months by the dedicated wildlife volunteers. Gill Brownhill said she was now ready for release and was looking for a suitable site for her. I worked a shift at the centre a few weeks ago and, as I knew we didn’t have a resident pair of pee wees on our property, offered to take her home and help her become established in our two acre garden. I have called her Weezy.

Weezy is slightly disabled and has a bad left leg, however she manages to limp along very well and is a very strong flier. From the moment I set her free she has been a delight. Over the weeks she has grown from being totally dependent on handfeeding to being given a supplementary feed (crickets, grated cheese, rolled oats and fine slivers of beef) several times a day. Every morning Weezy is out on the lawn searching for grubs, insects and worms. We catch march flies for her and my house has now been de-spidered for the cause! She is now getting confident and her food search area now extends to my neighbour Christine Hartley’s lower lawn area. Hopefully she will soon be totally independent.

I’m hoping Weezy will continue to do well, avoid predators and eventually find a mate.

First local organic swap meetBellbunya Community in Belli Park, will be hosting its first swap meet and healing day 21 January, from 9am to 12noon. The event is the chance for locals to meet, and swap, sell, or buy fresh locally grown produce. Belbunya will also be running an organic café on the day with resident Japanese chef, Mana, and her home-made organic rice sushi, as well as hosting a therapy and healing day in the community hall. SunshineThis striking plant, also known commonly as 'Voodoo Lily' and 'Devil's Tongue', is part of the Arum family and belongs to the Amorphophallus genus that includes more than 200 tropical and subtropical tuberous herbaceous plants. Amorphophallus bulbifer tolerates a wide range in temperatures, and thrives between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. It does well in a part-shade garden position, or in dappled shade. The stunning fl ower emerges before the leaves and strongly resembles a peace lily. The pale pink and

green spathe surrounds a striking cream-coloured spadix. On older specimens, the fl ower can grow up to 20cm tall. Flies and beetles are attracted to the fl ower's pungent scent, and are necessary for fertilisation. If the plant is fertilised, red seeds form on the spadix and can be propagated. This year ours fl owered, but unfortunately no seeds appeared. Instead it collapsed into the pot, and the tuber will remain dormant for a time. Each successive fl owering seems to result in a shorter period of dormancy, so it will be interesting to see when the tuber will begin to regrow this time.

As a business owner and mum it is almost impossible to fi nd time to do anything for yourself, but this year was mine! With a little gentle persuasion from my dear friend and yoga teacher, I found myself boarding a plane to India.

This trip could not have come at a better time, as I was to discover the life changing effect it would have on my

wellness. When I decided to go to India I was by no means the most devoted yogi. In my heart I aspired to be, but in practice it’s been a non-event most weeks. But I realised while in India that in order to give to my son, my business and to my community I had to fi rst give to me. Now I am at class at least four times a week.

In India I practised yoga every day, ate beautiful ayurvedic meals and enjoyed daily massages. Oh my goodness I can't tell you how amazing that combination truly is!

On the fi rst day the others who were joining us from other states of Australia (how cool is that - our Donna at Soul Song has an amazingly large audience) asked me, “What style of yoga does Donna teach?” Unsure, I replied, "Donna style yoga!” And as we entered our fi rst session I quickly realised I was among some long time yogis!

That never mattered though because in all our teachings Donna always found in us a strength to better ourselves and challenge our own practice. Of course I won’t lie, we had a lot of tear inducing laughter and fun... lots of fun... yes shopping too - I won an award for this!

We went to the elephant sanctuary, temples of Ganesh and had many more amazing cultural experiences. It was a very well balanced retreat that offered you the option to do or not do, without any pressure.

Thank you Donna, for bringing so much love and light to our time in India; I know that what we experienced would not have been possible without you!
