What’s On 19

In this edition, the Mint presents coins and sets that honour our rich history and those that ensure the safety of all Australians.

National Police Remembrance Day is held every year on 29 September to remember police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. To coincide with the anniversary, the Royal Australian Mint has released a 2019 $2 Coloured Circulating Coin and a 2019 Coloured ‘C’ Mintmark Uncirculated Coin. These coins are a tribute to our police officers and their efforts to protect and uphold Australian laws.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) the Mint presents a commemorative 2019 50c Uncirculated Coin. ASIO was established in 1949 in the post-World War II Cold War era. Since then, ASIO has been committed to protecting the country, citizens and interests from those who wish it harm.

To celebrate the Centenary of the Great England to Australia Air Race, the Mint presents a collection of eight stunning 2019 $1 Uncirculated Coins, packaged in a collectible tin. The excitement, drama and tragedy of the Great Air Race makes this a special coin collection.

The Mint’s 2019 Outreach program continues its tour around Australia in 2019. Our Minties will be hosting Coin Swaps throughout September. For updates on dates and locations stay tuned to our social channels and website.

Happy collecting.

MEET THE MINTIESR O S S W I L L I A M S O N

Ross Williamson joined the Royal Australian Mint in April 2016, working in the Logistics Team, Sales Team and then moving into the (QMS) Quality Management Systems Team.

As a Lean Improvement Officer within the QMS Team, Ross offers support and education around 'Lean Thinking' and continual improvement of the Mint. On any given day, you can find Ross helping others to implement and evaluate various improvement solutions.

The (QMS) Quality Management Systems Branch of the Royal Australian Mint is responsible for the provision of organisation wide governance and compliance services, including a Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Framework, business measurement, quality assurance and lean process improvement.

Ross and the QMS Team are currently working to minimise or eliminate waste in the Mint’s production processes. They achieve this by looking at specific measurables such as cycle times, waste streams and other metrics.

As a proud Mintie, Ross is a keen coin collector of fine silver proof coins. The recently released black nickel plated coins such as the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing and the Echoes of Australian

Fauna series have become his personal favourites.

Ross’s family has a long history within the Minting industry with his grandfather, Ronald Webb, also having worked at the Royal Australian Mint. Ross is proud to keep the family connection alive and believes the friendly culture is why the Mint is such a great place to work.

FROM THE VAULTT H E E U R E K A M O N T A G E

In 2004, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade, the Royal Australian Mint released The Eureka Montage.

The Eureka Stockade, an uprising of gold miners at Ballarat, is widely viewed as one of the most dramatic events experienced on Australian soil in the 19th Century.

In 1854, tensions flared as the miners grew tired of the increasing and discriminatory taxes they had to pay, and the high-handed tactics of the authorities. On Sunday 3 December, deepening tension led to crowds of protesters gathering beneath a new revolutionary flag of dark blue and white: the flag of the Southern Cross.

The Victorian Government responded on foot and horseback, its men storming the stockade. During the brief battle thirty miners and five soldiers were killed, and the miners’ leader, Peter Lalor, lost his left arm. The government placed the rebels on trial in Melbourne, but the juries refused to convict them.

To ensure the historical accuracy, The Eureka Montage was jointly launched by the Mint, the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery.

The Eureka Montage was crafted by Michael and Marie Salmon and included exclusively struck Eureka medallions. A gold nugget, sourced from the Ballarat gold fields was included, along with stamps and images. Strictly limited to 150 and at a RRP $2295.00, the montage also included a 2004 Eureka $1 Silver Proof Coin and the 2004 Eureka $1 Mintmark Coin.
