COLLEGE NEWS
College Principal’s Report
Welcome back to the 2017 school year. As always it has been a busy start with new staff and many new
enrolments. A particularly warm welcome is extended to families whose child/children are attending for the first time at the college.
As you would have been informed via media, our 2016 HSC results were outstanding with many students gaining ATARs in the high 90’s. These results again demonstrate the great strength the Great Lakes Learning Community (six feeder primary schools and three campuses of the college) provide for over 3,000 students.
In 2016, as part of a cycle of evaluations, the GLC Core Values were reviewed. This involved surveying staff and students, discussions at P&C, executive and staff meetings and consideration of the latest research into the impact of core values. As a result, we are adopting three GLC Core Expectations- Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. The two values of Cooperation and Fairness have been incorporated into the three Core Expectations.
We look forward to working with our parents/carers, students and community groups in 2017.

COLLEGE BAND NEWS
College Band rehearsals have started for 2017 under the direction of Mrs Narelle Richardson (based at Forster
Campus). Mrs Richardson has years of experience in leading choirs, concert bands, jazz ensembles and has been a Musical Director for many musical productions here and elsewhere. Mrs Richardson is the MD for the College’s production of Grease next term.
Continuing College Band students are encouraged to return to rehearsals at their campus, particularly if they were in possession of a school instrument last year. There are positions available for newly enrolled students who can play any woodwind, brass or percussion instrument, or a bass guitar. It is important that band musicians have at least a beginner’s understanding of reading music (for their instrument) on a stave and how those notes are played on their instrument. Having private lessons outside school hours is strongly encouraged and playing with the band will both support and help to rapidly develop the skills learnt in private tuition.
Rehearsals occur once a week at each campus as follows:
Tuncurry and Senior Campus - Tuesdays 8.00am - 9.00am
Forster Campus - Thursdays 8.00am - 9.10am
Performances opportunities occur every term and students need to be able to commit to all rehearsals and performances for the year. Students are rewarded for consistent attendance and effort. In addition, those with excellent punctuality also go in a draw to win a $20 gift voucher.
Selected students in the College Band will also participate in the Grease (Musical) band. This band rehearses between 3.30pm and 5.00pm at Tuncurry Campus this term - same timeslot as the lead cast.
For more information, please email [email protected], phone Forster Campus on 6554 6062 for an appointment or students can collect an information letter from Mrs Richardson at rehearsals.

COLLEGE SPORT
It was a hot and sticky day – perfect for Year 7 and 8 to get in the pool, race, cool down and have fun at the Stage 4
swimming carnival. The day was action packed with a large number of students entering events. Of course, the mat race, wheel barrow race and kick board relay were the most popular.
The fastest boys and fastest girls competed in a Champion of Champions race. Students are to be commended for their behaviour and effort on the day. A special congratulations goes to the age champions and those swimmers who qualified for Zone Swimming in Taree. The age champions were:

Our 2017 musical production will be the hit classic, Grease. Opening on Broadway back
in 1971, the musical spawned the famous 1978 movie, many revivals and most recently, the Grease Live television event.
Our production will run for three nights in Week 9 of Term 2 (22nd - 24th June) at Forster Campus MPH.
Auditions were held late last year and an exciting cast of talented students from across the college has been formed. The lead cast has already begun rehearsing and will be working hard after school each week to get the show together.
All students who auditioned but did not secure a lead role have been invited to form the Chorus – a very important group that supports the lead cast throughout the production! Students who did not audition are also most welcome to join – Chorus rehearsals will take place each Thursday from 3:30-5pm at Tuncurry Campus Music rooms.
Opportunities to assist with backstage, sound and lighting, artwork and other roles will be open to interested students as the event draws near.
For more information, please contact Vincent Jensen at Tuncurry & Senior Campuses and Narelle Richardson at Forster Campus.

Welcome to all students, parents and caregivers for the 2017 school year. The P&C is the primary advocacy group for students, parents, carers, teachers and other members of the three campuses which comprise the Great Lakes College. The group meets monthly, alternating venues between the Forster and Tuncurry Campuses. The meetings last approximately one hour, and often we invite a guest speaker to give a short talk on their particular role with the students at the college.
The P&C is responsible for the management of the canteens at both campuses. Each canteen has a full time employed supervisor, as well as a small number of additional paid staff. Both canteens rely on extra help provided by volunteers. These volunteers help to reduce wage costs that in turn, lead to increased profits, which are ultimately then donated back to the college. All volunteers are warmly welcomed at both canteens, and I encourage anyone with a little spare time to consider helping out at either of the canteens. The canteens provide a range of nutritious meals, all under the NSW Healthy Canteen guidelines. Prices are very competitive, so please give the canteen a go!
The P&C can financially assist students who are representing the college at national and/or international sporting events. This is by written request.
We currently have approx. 25 financial members of the P&C. The monthly meetings are well attended, and usually all campus principals are present. There is ample time to ask questions, all in a non-judgemental environment.
All committee positions will be declared vacant at the upcoming AGM, and a new committee elected thereafter. The AGM is scheduled for 6.30 pm on Wed Mar 1, at the Tuncurry library. All are invited to attend, especially if interested in becoming part of the P&C committee. The AGM will be followed by the usual monthly meeting, starting at 7pm.
I do encourage all to attend the P&C meetings. They are an informal way of meeting with college principals, but also seeing differing aspects of College issues, which can affect our children’s education. Your voice will be heard, and you can make a difference.

SRC news
The school year has started well for the SRC with the School Leaders working hard at the Stage 4 swimming carnival to raise funds for our school. The SRC is currently looking for volunteers for the 2017 school year from years 7 to 10.
All students are encouraged to attend, particularly year 9 students who may be thinking about applying for a school leadership position in 2018, as this is now a prerequisite.
During Term 4 2016, the SRC ran a fundraiser to support children that may not get Christmas gifts each year, by donating gifts to the Kmart Wishing tree. Students set up a gold coin donation in roll call each day and successfully managed to raise $180.
The funds allowed school leaders to select a number of gifts including sporting equipment, Lego and toddler toys for both male and female children.
These gifts were then wrapped by Forster Campus school leaders Keely Robinson, Gemma Caves, Nick Phillip and SRC volunteer, Nettie Holmes.
These students gave up their first day of the Christmas school holidays to assist Ronald McDonald House with their fundraising by wrapping Christmas presents.
The four volunteers and ex School Leaders Ramsey Maberly-Smith, Mia Williams and George Castillo, assisted the community in having their gifts wrapped in time for Christmas.

Transitioning from Primary School to High School can be daunting for some students. Orientation Day is the first time they’ve ever been to a High School.
26 Year 10 students participated in training last year to prepare them for their role in supporting the younger students who would be joining us in Year 7 this year.
These Peer Leaders played a key role in the Orientation Day and the first day of school this year, giving tours of the school, sitting in on classes, assisting the teachers with activities, running their own activities, teaching the younger students how to read a timetable, reassuring nervous students and so much more.
Issue 1 – Term 1– Week 4 Page 10
They even gave up their last day of school holidays to be here with Year 7 on their first day of school.
Over the past two weeks I’ve witnessed some of these Peer Leaders helping the Year 7 students find their classes, talking to them in the playground, asking if they’re doing ok and just being kind and interested in how they’re finding high school.
Eight of these Peer Leaders have now been selected to join us at the Year 7 camp to
continue in their supportive roles. However, all of the Peer Leaders did an amazing job and showed
their maturity and leadership skills throughout.

Help To Keep Your Kids Safe Online
The Commonwealth Government’s Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has developed a resource for parents called iPARENT which is designed to help parents learn how to be safe and secure with the connected devices in their children’s lives.
iPARENT – found at https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent provides facts and statistics about Australian children online, managing technology in the home and strategies used by parents to keep children safe online.
A parent’s guide to online safety can be downloaded from the site and a range of useful information is available. For example, parents can access information about cyberbullying including:
How to talk to your child
A parent’s guide to responding to cyberbullying
What to do if your child is being cyberbullied or is
cyberbullying others
Sources of professional support and help
Information is also available for parents about unwanted contact, inappropriate, offensive or illegal content and sexting.
The Department of Education also has a cyber safety resource for parents on its website called Raising Good Digital Citizens which is accessible at http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/en/technology/usingtechnology/raising-good-digital-citizens

Principal’s Report
A warm welcome to our Year 7 students and to the many new enrolments in Years 8, 9 and 10. I have been impressed with the manner in which you have settled into our school and embraced our culture of working hard. Also welcome back to the students in Years 8, 9 and 10. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday!
Tuncurry Campus also welcomes a number of new staff joining us this year:
Mr Ruprecht is in the CAPA faculty, teaching mostly Music; Mr Blanch is in the Science Department replacing Mr Webb who is in PDHPE this year; Mrs Woolley will also be in the Science Department. She is replacing Mr Beavis. Miss Leaudias joins us in the Maths KLA replacing Miss Evans and Mrs Shepherd will also be joining us 3 days a fortnight in the Support Unit. We also welcome back Mrs Lawton after her maternity leave.
We also have Mrs Booker, Mrs Sheffield and Mrs Guillier joining us as Student Learning Support Officers, assisting teachers in the classroom and Merv Brown will be working with our Indigenous students four days a week.
During 2016 the college decided to embrace the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). Already we have reduced the five core Values and replaced them with three Core Expectations of Respect, Responsible and Personal Best.
Throughout the year myself, Mrs Cougle and other members of staff will be having many conversations with students and parents regarding these expectations.
Issue 1 – Term 1– Week 4 Page 13
A significant change to the timetable structure for Years 9 and 10 has occurred. All elective classes now have a double period every fortnight. This enables teachers to have a 2 hour timeslot to organise activities and small excursions to take place outside of the campus, without disrupting the students learning in other subject areas. Already the PASS and Marine Studies electives have organised such events to take place.
It hasn’t taken very long for students to be involved in extra-curricular activities with the College swimming carnival having already been held and auditions and rehearsals for the College Musical conducted. Coaches are also collecting names for several sports in preparation for upcoming tournaments. I look forward to hearing, reading and hope seeing many of our students participating and achieving success in these extra-curricular activities.
Finally, the following is part of my address that I gave to the students at the Welcome Assembly.
“It is important that we start the year on a positive note. It is a fresh start and I expect that you will also try your hardest i.e. strive for your Personal Best and I will leave you with something to think about”.

SENIOR CAMPUS
Principal’s Report
Congratulations Year 12 2016. Individual and group HSC results indicate 2016 was yet another outstanding year for Great Lakes College Senior
Students.
Congratulations to Michael Morris who is the 2016 DUX of the Senior Campus. With Band 6s in Chemistry, Advanced
English, Physics and E4s in both Extension 1 and Extension 2 Mathematics. Michael was listed in the NSW Board of
Studies prestigious “All Rounder’s List” and he was placed in the “Top Achievers” for Chemistry. Michael was
awarded an incredible 99.75 ATAR.
Each year we hold a special assembly to celebrate the achievements of those students who excelled in the HSC by
achieving ATARS in excess of 90. In 2016, twelve of our students were awarded ATARS above 90, seven of these
students achieving ATARS above 95. This is a fantastic achievement and we congratulate Michael Morris, (99.75);
Kristian Fiebig (99.45); Matt Crowther (98.2); Caitlin Sweeney (97.4); Joey Newman (97.05); Ellie Clemensen (96.8);
Emily Barnett (95.2); Emma Handono (94.2); Michael Laden (93.8); Anna Robinson (92.45); Jamie De Gioia (91.8) and
Matt Moulder (90.2).
Students obtained Band 6s, (or equivalent Extension results), in the following subjects: - Ancient History, Design &
Technology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Mathematics, Extension 1 Mathematics, Extension 2 Mathematics,
Community & Family Studies, PDHPE, Biology, Physics, Dance, Senior Science, German Continuers, Advanced English,
English Extension 1, Visual Arts, Textiles & Design, French Beginners, Chinese Continuers, Engineering Studies,
History Extension, Music 1, Drama and Modern History.
In 2016, Great Lakes College Senior Campus participated in a mandatory Department of Education, (DoE),
“Validation” inspection. One of the measures the DoE uses to determine whether a school excels, is the number of
students within the school who achieve at least two HSC results in the Band 5 and 6 categories. In the 2016 HSC, the
Senior Campus had fifty seven students achieving at this level.
While we celebrated the success of those who achieved outstanding ATARS at our recent special assembly we also
celebrated the success of all our HSC students. In 2016, approximately 200 of our Year 12 students were awarded
with a HSC. With this many, students success takes many forms. For some, it is achieving this milestone in education.
For others it is combining academic subjects with vocational education subjects and obtaining a HSC that has joint
Board of Studies and TAFE accreditation, and for others it is the pure academic pathway to university or further
study.
In 2016, we had 53students who included one or more Vocational Education Training Course delivered by the school
in their HSC. These courses included Business Services, Construction, Hospitality, Metals & Engineering, Information
& Digital Media Technology and Furnishings. These students received a full Certificate II or a Statement of
Attainment toward CII on top of the HSC qualification. A further 35 students attained a full Certificate II or a
Statement of Attainment toward CII in a course delivered by TAFE and were also included these course as part of
their HSC.
Courses studied at TAFE included: Tourism, Automotive, Construction, Electro-Technology, Human Services, Retail,

Deputy Principal’s Report
We extend a warm welcome to all Year 11 students and new enrolments, and hope that 2017 is a successful year
academically, culturally and socially.
The first few weeks have involved many students changing subjects. The cut-off date for class changes has now been
reached.
Can I remind all parents that your child must return the permission note prior to them being granted the privilege of
signing in and out of school and leaving early on Wednesday afternoons if they do not participate in TAFE or
extension classes. Those notes can be obtained from the front office.
If you are going on extended leave you must seek permission from the Principal and complete the “Exemption from
School” form. We also ask that you explain all absences and lateness with a note or via the parent portal. These
should come in on the day or the day following an absence. Calls can be made to the Front Office instead of a note. If
any student wishes to access the parent portal they can call the front office to arrange for a login and password.
An Assessment Mapping Guide will be distributed to all Year 11 students shortly to indicate when tasks are due. Year
12 should have there’s from last year.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you wish to discuss any aspect of your child’s education.

University of Wollongong Discovery Day
Last week, 12 Year 12 students attended the University of Wollongong Discovery Day. We travelled with 20 other
Bulahdelah Central School and Wingham HS students and staff. Over 7000 students from across the state attend this
5 day annual event.
Students had the opportunity to attend several lectures of their choice relating to different degree programs they
are considering, as well as general information sessions on maximising the ATAR, study skills, scholarships, early
entry, accommodation options and a campus tour with a student ambassador.
UOW is built on the old botanic gardens and is a picturesque campus with very modern facilities. They offer a free
shuttle bus to the shops, harbour, beaches and student accommodation.

This opportunity will be offered to Year 11/12 students each year at minimal expense. Next year we are considering
including a visit to Macquarie University on the way home.
Senior students should listen out in Term 4 this year for information on how to register for the 2018 Discovery Day.

Senior Drama News
Late last year, Year 12 student, Joshua Shelley had his group performance selected for the NSW
Department of Education State Drama Festival which is held annually at the
Seymour Centre in Sydney.
The State
Drama Festival is a prestigious
event and receives many applicants a
year so to be selected is a great
honour. In addition, students who
are selected experience performing
on a professional stage with professional sound and
light crew.
Josh performed with his group from the State
Drama Camp which he attended earlier in the year
where he spent a week participating in Drama
workshops with other talented Year 11 students
from NSW. The group performance was devised by
the students themselves and incorporated physical
theatre techniques which explored the evolution of
humanity.
In Term 4, Year 12 Drama student, Jessica
Peeters, received a scholarship to attend a
week of Drama workshops with the Australian
Theatre for Young People in Sydney during the
summer holidays. The scholarship included
return airfares to Sydney, accommodation,
tickets to see productions at the Sydney
Festival and four days of intensive Drama
workshops.
This was an amazing opportunity for Jessica
who enjoyed spending the entire week
immersed in Drama with other students from
around the State.

Well, we made it back safely into
Australia on January 19th after
spending the last three weeks
touring the West Coast of the
United States. Fifteen travellers
and two Group Leaders from the
Great Lakes district took part in
the trip of a lifetime during the
school holidays.
We flew out on New Year’s
Eve and arrived in Los
Angeles six hours before we
left Sydney, giving us two
midnights to celebrate the
New Year! We spent some
time at Santa Monica Pier
before heading toward our
hotel in Buena Park, and
before having dinner at the
hotel and getting over jet-lag.
Day two of the trip was spent on some
of the biggest roller coasters in the world
at Knott’s Berry Farm. That night, we had dinner
in downtown Hollywood, and drove the bus down
through Beverley Hills. The next day we did a day trip down the coast to San Diego and some retail therapy,
before going to the Pirate Adventure dinner show. Next morning, we woke bright and early ready to spend all day
at Disneyland. Despite the waits for rides, everyone had a great time.
Our final morning in Los Angeles meant we had to clean up our rooms (which took forever) and squeeze all our
stuff into our bags. We drove to Universal Studios, and saw the movie sets, and rode the rides, and saw the shows
and saw the new Harry Potter exhibit. Then we went to LAX airport for our flight to San Francisco.
Our first day in SF we took a Harbour Cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge, around Alcatraz (“The Rock”) and past
downtown San Francisco. Off the ferry, we caught a trolley car to downtown for some more retail therapy, and
then rode a cable car back to Lombard St – the crookedness street in the world.

Group Leaders: Matt Avery, Kim Morris
Students: Henry Bargallie, Samantha Bestwick, Taleesha Black, Shelby Connolly, Vincent Craven, Benjamin Denniss, Anita Handono, Mitchell Lewis, Crystal-Lee Marion, Ashley McMahon, Mackenzie Peacock, Taylor Sutton, Rebecca Tait, Nicole Taylor, Breanna Truett, Sarah Wilson
That night, we had dinner at the Hard Rock Café, before packing for our last day in San Fran. The highlight of the
Bus Tour of the city the next day was walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, before going to the airport to fly
north to Seattle for the hosting section of the trip.
We were met at Henry M Jackson High School late at night by our hosts who made us feel very welcome then
went straight home with our hosts. Most people had a great time with their hosts over the next fortnight. While
we were hosted, the group went shopping, sightseeing in the Seattle area, Went skiing or snowboarding and
spent a day with our host at school. It was certainly an interesting period staying with an American family and it
was very difficult to leave families that had taken us in and cared for us for a fortnight.
There were lots of tears and hugs when we left the school to fly out to San Francisco and then home to Australia.
The return trip was considerably quieter than the trip there as students tried to catch up on sleep deprivation. It
was also difficult adjusting to 40°C between Seattle and Sydney. However, everybody had a great time on the trip.
Watch this space for details of the 2019 trip, which will start to be organised in Term 2.
