International Collaboration

• MPI-K Heidelberg: TSR, technical input to install and commission.

• CERN: New TSR building and infrastructure (15 MCHF). Research Board approved installation and included on CERN-MTP.

• UK: Detector array for internal spectrometer. External (HELIOS-like) spectrometer.

Total project costs awarded, including manpower, is £4.8M (£3.2M “new money” mostly for materials), shared between Daresbury, Liverpool &

Edinburgh.(Includes contingency)

• Universities of Aarhus and Lund: In-ring gas-jet target.

• Internal: Recirculation advantage for light species; any pure light gas, e.g. helium-3, can be used as target.

Acceptance and luminosity

• External: Generally larger coverage in scattering angle, important for establishing angular distributions.

KEY PRIORITY of ISOL-SRS is to develop spectrometer systems for the TSR storage ring to fully exploit the range of radioactive beams from HIE-ISOLDE.

• 4T, ActiveShield technology MRI magnet available (type OR66)• Large bore of up to 90 cm diameter, ~2m long• Magnet comes with power supply, cold-head and compressor,

and other equipment and should be operational• Installation requires cool-down (6500 litres of LHe, ramping and

shimming (passive and active shimmming)• Specifications:

MRI magnet: Oxford OR66

Install at CERN first quarter of 2019

LS2 2019-2020 (if delayed by 1 year)

Exploitation with direct HIE beams 2020-2023

Exploitation with TSR beams from 2023

Planning

14

External spectrometer will be deployed in ISOLDE hall

Funding for magnet (~£250k) needs to be found (possibility of capital funding in UK).

Gas- jet target will be picked up by Scandinavian groups.

Laser spectroscopy aspects to be pursued through consolidated grants

Others welcome to join – bring ancillary detectors etc.
