Jointly organized by ISIS Malaysia, Bachcesehir University, Civilization Studies Center (MEDAM) and the International Movement for a Just World (JUST) Malaysia on 3 February 2011 at Istanbul, Turkey. Session Two of the Conference was in the form of a Debate broadcasted by BBC World, titled `The Global Movement for Justice, Peace & Dignity.’ The debate featured The Hon Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, The Hon Ali Babacan, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, Dr Anies Baswedan, President, Paramadina University, Indonesia, Mr Khalid Abdulla‐Janahi, Vice Chairman/Co‐Founder, Arab Business Council, and Prof Dr Nilufer Narli, Professor of Political Sociology, Bahcesehir University, Istanbul.

The Talk on Nuclear Energy was followed immediately by a Closed Door Dialogue on Nuclear Energy in Perspective with Dr Mohd Zamzam Jaafar, Chief Executive Officer, Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation. Dato’ Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, President/Chief Executive Officer, Tenaga Nasional Berhad was the Discussant.

The book was officially launched by HRH Raja Nazrin Shah Ibni Sultan Azlan Muhibbudin Shah, the Crown Prince of Perak Darul Ridzwan, and Eminent Fellow, ISIS Malaysia. The launching ceremony was followed by a Seminar conducted in five sessions. Role players included Tan Sri Datuk Clifford Francis Herbert, Vice President of Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing, Dr Nungsari Ahmad Radhi, Executive Director, Research and Investment Strategy, Khazanah National, Dato’ Latifah Merican Cheong, Adviser, Chairman’s Office, Securities Commission Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob, Chairman, MIDA, and Dr Yeah Kim Leng, Group Chief Economist, RAM Holdings.

A few meetings and activities took place on the sidelines of the 25th APR. Among them were the Australian‐ASEAN Emerging Leaders Programme, The Young Leaders’ Programme, and the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) meeting. There were also interviews with HE Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary General of ASEAN, and Admiral Robert F Willard, Commander, US Pacific Command.

Natalie Shobana Ambrose Analyst Natalie Shobana Ambrose’s research interests include ASEAN, human rights, economics, international law, and track two diplomacy, in particular negotiation and mediation practices. Prior to joining ISIS, Natalie was a Research Associate for six years in the office of the Crown Prince of Perak Darul Ridzuan. She has also worked at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malaysia. As a columnist for three years for theSun, a Malaysian daily, Natalie publishes regularly under her fortnightly column On Pointe, which focuses on social issues and social justice. She received a Masters in International Studies and Diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, as a Chevening Scholar, a BA in Sociology from Massey University, New Zealand, and is completing her dissertation for a Masters in Strategy and Defence Studies from University of Malaya.

WELCOME
Firdaos Rosli Senior Analyst Firdaos started his career in the accounting and banking sector before moving to the public sector in 2004 as an Assistant Director in Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). There he held various responsibilities in the areas of bilateral and regional relations and in Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). He was part of the main secretariat to the Malaysia‐US Free Trade Agreement negotiation team. He has previously served as the Senior Private Secretary to the Deputy Minister of MITI. Firdaos studied the Business Foundation Programme at St. Andrew’s College, Cambridge, before pursuing a degree in Accounting and Finance from Lancaster University, The United Kingdom. He also holds a Diploma in Public Administration from the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN), Malaysia.

Dr Muhammed Abdul Khalid Senior Analyst Dr Muhammed Abdul Khalid’s research interests include issues related to economic inequality, income and wealth distribution, and socio economic development. He holds a PhD (1st class honours) and Master of Public Affairs (cum laude) from Sciences‐Po Paris, a Master of Economics from the University of Malaya and a Bachelor of Science (Finance) from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He has taught international macroeconomics to graduate students at Sciences‐PO Paris, and the political economy of the European Union to undergraduate students of Sciences‐PO and Northwestern University. He has also published a few articles on the topic of inequalities and distribution in academic journals, and has been invited as speaker and panelist to several seminars and conferences.

(From left) Cho Kah Sin, his wife Mok Shian, Susan Teoh and Harizan Zakaria, 14 April 2011. Cho Kah Sin and Mok Shian worked at ISIS Malaysia during the 1990s. Kah Sin was one of the research staff of the Bureau of National Economic Policy Studies while Mok Shian was with the Public Affairs and Conference Services division. Kah Sin and Mok Shian met while at ISIS and later got married. Cho Kah Sin is now the Regional Advisor for UNAIDS, based in Bangkok. (Photo courtesy of Harizan)
Dr Giovanni Capannelli attended the ASEAN and Malaysia in 2030: Country Consultation Meeting at ISIS Malaysia on 21 June 2011. Dr Giovanni was based at the Centre for Japan Studies (CJS) at ISIS Malaysia in 1995. He was conducting research for his PhD dissertation. He was first introduced to ISIS Malaysia by his supervising professor, Dr Ippei Yamazawa of Hitotsubashi University, an old friend of CJS. Giovanni is currently the Principal Economist and Senior Research Fellow at the ADB Institute in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to this, he was attached to the Asia Europe Institute at the University of Malaya, and the Asian Development Bank in Manila. (Photo courtesy of Zarina)

She is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University, Sunway campus. Helen was formerly a Senior Analyst at ISIS Malaysia. She joined ISIS in 1984 and was part of ISIS’ pioneering research staff. She was with ISIS for 14 years. Along the way she acquired a PhD from Oxford University, England. She left ISIS in 1998. Datuk Dr Zainal Aznam Mohd Yusof YBhg Datuk Dr Zainal Aznam Mohd Yusof, former Deputy Director General (Economy), 1995‐2002 and “Distinguished Fellow” 2002‐2008 passed away on 30 April 2011. He was 66 years old.

Last Day of Work/Retirement Treats

24th January 2011 marked the last working day of Rosli Ahmad’s long career in the Finance Division of
ISIS Malaysia. In the weeks leading to the day, Rosli was treated to various farewell lunches by his colleagues; he was also presented with a farewell gift.

A surprise birthday party was organized by the staff for Dato’ Dr Mahani Zainal Abidin at the ISIS Boardroom on 12 April 2011! She was celebrating her XXth (Classified Information) Birthday. Many (many) Happy Returns of the Day!

The Renaissance Hotel Kuala Lumpur treated ISIS staff to a special High Tea, a blue‐themed event that took place at the Conference Room, ISIS Malaysia, on 20th April 2011.

A 3‐IN‐1 VISIT
A group of ISIS ladies went for a 3‐in‐1 hospital visit to the Pusat Rawatan Islam Hospital to check on colleagues Kamaruddin (Din), little Danial Imran, the second son of Norazzah (Azza) and Nurul Ain on 26 April 2011.
