Secondary Newsletter | Issue 2 | October 2010

Dear Parents,This News Feature is dedicated to our MYP students and their success which we celebrated recently. The middle years in education are difficult and challenging for all parties involved – just look at a student starting Secondary and her problems and pleasures, how they grow (students, problems and pleasures) and how young people despite the wealth of non-scholastic challenges and temptations manage to learn, progress and become ready for Upper school. Find out more about our MYP graduates in this issue. With the IB MYP we aim to educate the whole child, so Community and Service, camps and projects are an integral part of the school life. As is teaching and learning – and as learning is an extremely complex process, assessing learning properly has to be complex too. In order to help you to understand how we assess and report on learning in the MYP, a special information evening, involving department presentations and an overview by our MYP coordinator, Mrs. Cunnane, has been arranged for 26 October. Please see details below.Due to the low number of interested parents, the homework club will not run for the time being. Let me repeat my request that students need to leave the building after classes unless

participating in an organized activity, as we cannot take responsibility for unsupervised children. I am sure you can understand this request. Finally, let me share with you one characteristic detail of this International school: amongst our over 800 students in Secondary, we counted 86 different passports – really representing the whole world!Best wishes for a relaxing autumn break,

Peter Kotrc

Direct Action’ group continues to be a no--bureaucracy way to

help the poor directly, with not one rupee,

cent or dollar going to other costs. 100% of your donation

goes to helping the poor, who community members have identified

as those who need help most.

Donation to Direct ActionEUR 2500- has been donated so far to the Direct Action group. They are planning to focus on children, because of our gift, and help them get back to school - which will mean providing notebooks, backpacks and any other school supplies. We are now also turning our attention to winter as temperatures have fallen quickly lately, and the people themselves have asked for blankets and razais (these are a kapock filled quilt which is the standard bedding used locally). All this has been destroyed and unlike the odd cooking utensil, cannot be ‘rescued’. For a full report, view the Autumn 2010 Special news feature webpage.

Collections ongoingCollections are ongoing for the Pakistan Appeal. October 8, 2010 saw Year 10 students in the band Dark System (www.darksystemofficial.tk) Tom Schmitz, Quentin Sitch and Sebastien Gamez holding a concert.

Careers call for professionalscareers q & a march 2011In early March 2011 the Careers department at ISH hopes to host a Careers event for students in Years 10-13.

For this we need your help. Our aim is to present our students with 25 to 30 speakers who can talk about their experiences in the careers of their choice and offer practical insights into their professional lives.

This will help our students as they develop ambitions for professional careers of their own, and will inspire them to investigate the required Higher Education courses needed to achieve these ambitions.

Our Careers event is tentatively planned for Tuesday 8 March, from 14.30 to 17.00 OR Wednesday 9 March from 18.00 to 20.30 (more on this choice below).

Speakers will be asked to give a talk, with opportunity for Questions and Answers, in three consecutive sessions, 30 to 45 minutes each, to rotating student groups of (maximum) 25. These talks will take place in classrooms equipped with computers, beamers and smartboards (if needed).

showing interest Would you be interested in speaking to our students about your career? Within our ISH community we must cover a wide range of professions, so we naturally turn to you first.

To investigate whether we can proceed with this plan or not, we ask you to complete the information below, and email this to the undersigned no later than November 15. We will then know if we can have enough speakers to fill a full roster, and decide on the date/time. Tuesday early afternoon would suit our students’ timetables better; Wednesday early evening will most likely be more convenient for full-time working parents.

We would be very grateful if you gave this request some consideration.

Kind regards,

On behalf of the Careers department,R.A. van Vliet

MYP graduation 2010and wonder how I could have thought of myself as being so mature, but, here’s something MYP has helped us develop- Maturity. Now that we’re here we’ve come to realize that IB does not revolve around studying for the ‘big exam’, it’s much more than that, and as much as we try to not see it, we cannot deny the fact that MYP has prepared for the worst-which for me is where we’re at right now.

Imane Hamdi Cherif:Haven’t we all felt that Education is not only about doing well within the confines of an examination hall. It’s about being able to walk through life eager to learn and open to self improvement, and open to that which is going to help you evolve, because that is why we are here, to evolve as human beings. It’s about being able to grow more into ourselves, to step up to that next level of understanding, of growth and compassion.

students speechImane Hamdi Cherif:MYP... MYP...MYP... MYP...Ladies and Gentlemen,MYP has been a fantastic journey in learning and personal development. Wasn’t MYP the most exciting academic trip we all took part of?, MYP was simply fantastic. MYP is ..well, just, well to be very honest there is not that much I can say. I mean, Did we really enjoy it THAT much? I mean, come on, let’s face the truth and be honest about it, We hated that thing! Don’t you all agree with me that times, we found it : dull, irrelevant, pointless busy, and simply a must do kinda thing, we struggled every day, we hated nearly every minute of it, weren’t we all so keen to see it done and dusted once and for all?! Anyone disagree with me? Anyone..? , alright, well, we did learn a thing or two, maybe three. I’ll skip the math, science and anything to do with academics, because at the end of the day they are a given must do, but what I want to look back on is what MYP has done to me. I refer to it as the MYP evolution.

Adrien de Wulf:Its memories such as the time during year nine camp, where Nikende and Joel lead us through what then, seemed to be the hit of the century- Soulja Boy. I look back on how I was then and now,

14

Page 15: ISH Secondary Autumn 2010 news feature

MYP graduation 2010Adrien de Wulf:Last but in no way least, we should all be proud of the knowledgeable, mature and great people we’ve grown to be. As young primary children we dream of the high school experience. Well it saddens me to know that the experience will soon come to a close, but we’re here today to celebrate what I believe will be one of the most beautiful periods of our life because for us the most recent years of our childhood were spent here.

Imane Hamdi Cherif:Let us not forget that it’s all a matter of time before the now familiar faces, will become memories, lovely memories. So before I leave, I want to end by saying Thank you. Thank you to you guys, Thank you to you for not being self-centered, thank you for making the most of the opportunities you had at hand. Thank you for trying, for working and well done for succeeding.

Adrien de Wulf:On a final note, let’s give a round of applause to our school community and our wonderful parents who helped us throughout this process.Thank you.

MYP graduation 2010school reports, but also a copy of the personal project, information and reflections on Community and Service activities and records of extra-curricular achievements such as sport, music and drama. The achievement folder will give future schools, universities and employers a good assessment of the students’ capabilities and achievement in the middle school. The Year 11 class of 2010 did very well, achieving an overall MYP success rate of 85% with individual achievements as high as a total of 57 points out of a possible 63. The graduates can be very proud of their achievements and are wished continued success in their studies.

Marian CunnaneMYP coordinator

from the mentorsMs. Peters first mentor class in this school Mentor Group 10C/11C were fantastic mentees. She was proud to be their mentor and wishes them all the best in the remaining 2 years in IB DP.

Presentation of Middle Years Programme Certificates and Records of Achievement. It was once again a great pleasure for me as MYP Coordinator to present the Year 11 students from 2009 -2010 with their MYP Records of Achievement and MYP certificate or ISH Middle School Certificate. All students received a MYP Record of Achievement. This document states the final grade (1-7) for each individual subject and the personal project, and indicates that the student has met the school’s Community and Service programme requirements. The MYP Certificate was presented to those who met the specific requirements for the award of the certificate. Students, however, who had joined ISH at the start of year 11 from a non-MYP school were, despite meeting the minimum total points requirement, not eligible for the MYP Certificate. In order to recognize their successful completion of the final year of MYP they received the ISH Middle School Certificate.

The graduates received their documents in the attractive MYP Achievement Folder. The achievement folder is provided by the IB and is intended to act as a safe record of the student’s progress and performance through the MYP. I would encourage the MYP graduate to use the folder to keep not only the official IB MYP documents and

Ms. Elly is obviously a big fan of Whitney Houston, as well as of her Mentor Group!
