building vocabulary

Before talking about your favourite star, you need to know vocabulary related to entertainment.

StarS

Readthesetexts.Fillintheblankswiththecorrectinformationoranswerthequestions.

1. Everywhere we go, music surrounds us. It has been part of culture since time immemorial. Every style of music has its famous composers and performers as well as fans of different ages all around the world. Rap, hip-hop and hard rock are very popular with teenagers. Older people prefer more relaxing styles of music such as jazz, classical, pop rock and blues.

Your origins, the music you listened to at home when you were young, and where you live may influence your preferences in styles of music. For example, country music is more popular in the western part of Canada, whereas it is rarely broadcast on radio stations in the eastern part of the country.

Special occasions often remind us of a particular style of music. For example, year after year, the Christmas season is associated with its famous carols and traditional music. When New Year’s Day comes along, original folk songs and new versions of traditional songs are part of many family get-togethers.

a) What kind of music do teenagers prefer?

.

b) Which style of music is rarely aired in the eastern part of Canada?

.

c) Which types of songs are associated with New Year’s Day?

.

2. Several English-speaking Canadian artists are known worldwide: Shania Twain for her country music, Bob Walsh for his blues, Bryan Adams for his pop rock music, as well as the late piano player Oscar Peterson and singer Diana Krall for their jazz, just to name a few. Other promising stars are making their way up the celebrity ladder: Avril Lavigne and Feist in pop rock, along with Billy Talent and the popular group Simple Plan in rock music.

All these singers and groups make their living by selling their recordings, whether on compact discs (CDs), digital video discs (DVDs) or paid downloads from the Web. Their talent is celebrated in special award ceremonies around the world. In the United States, the Grammy Awards recognize the achievements of popular artists in different music categories. Here in Canada, the Juno awards do the same for musicians, while in Québec, the ADISQ (Association québécoise de l’industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo) acknowledges the talent of outstanding artists.

a) Identify an internationally known English-speaking Canadian jazz musician.

.

b) What does DVD stand for? .

c) What awards are given to outstanding musical artists in Canada?
