NEEDING ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE
Read these texts. Fill in the blanks with the correct information or answer the questions.
1. We all know that an accident or a car breakdown is not a desired situation. It is perfectly normal to feel anxious when such a situation happens. The most important thing is to stay calm. Easier said than done!
Let’s say you are driving on a highway and suddenly your car breaks down. You need assistance and it is very important to signal it to other drivers. You should turn on your hazard lights, pull over to the shoulder of the road, very carefully get out of your car and lift your car hood to signal that you have a mechanical problem.

2. Weather permitting, stay out of your car, at a good distance in front of it or beside it on the passenger side, not too close to your car in case it gets hit by an oncoming car. If you cannot stand outside because of bad weather, stay in your car with the doors locked and wait for roadside assistance. People driving by will surely report seeing you on the roadside to authorities. It should not take long before the police, a tow truck or a roadside assistance car stops by to help you.
a) Where is it preferable to stay while waiting for assistance? Out of the car, at a
in front of it or beside it .
b) Should you lock your doors while waiting for assistance?
3. If you have a cell phone, dial 0 or *4-1-4-1 for immediate assistance. State your location and describe your mechanical problem clearly and calmly. People taking your call are trained to deal with all kinds of problems and will take whatever necessary measures to help you out. So don’t worry, roadside assistance will be there in no time!
If you are in an accident, stay calm and, if possible, dial 911. People answering your call are trained to tell you exactly what to do. Just follow the instructions they give you and be confident. They will stay on line with you while you are waiting for the emergency services to arrive.
a) What are the phone numbers to dial for roadside assistance?
b) What is the number to dial if you have an accident?
c) What are the people answering your call trained to do? To .

THE BORDER
Read these texts. Answer the questions.
1. Since January 2007, Canadian citizens travelling by air to the United States, or transiting there, must have a valid Canadian passport. This requirement applies to all travellers, whatever their age, including children. As of the summer of 2008, Canadian citizens entering the U.S. by land need an enhanced driver’s licence or a passport. These high-tech permits constitute proof of citizenship.
The Canadian government recommends that travellers carry a valid Canadian passport for all their visits abroad, including the United States. A passport is the only universally accepted piece of identification, and it proves that you have the right to return to Canada.
a) What proof of citizenship is mandatory to enter the United States by land?
b) Do you need a passport if you are just transiting by air through the U.S.?
c) What is the only document universally accepted as proof of identity?
d) Do children need a passport too?
2. On your next trip abroad, you know that you will have to show proof of your identity (ID) to authorities. Most of the time, customs agents ask you specific questions, such as:
• Where do you live?
• Where are you going?
• How long will you be staying?
• Are you a Canadian citizen?
• May I see your ID papers, please?
• Are you bringing any food with you?
• Are you bringing animals with you?
• Do you have any plants with you?
More often than not, you will have no problems going through American customs. However if you have a criminal record, you will be denied entry into the United States.
Answer the following questions asked by customs agents:
a) Where do you live?
b) Where are you going?
c) How long will you be staying?
d) Are you a Canadian citizen?
e) Are you bringing any food with you?
f) Are you bringing animals with you?

ACTIVITIES IN THE PARK
Read this text and answer the questions.
SITUATION 2GETTING IN TOUCH WITH NATURE
The simple past tense is used to describe actions completed in the past. The same form is used for all persons.
The simple past tense of regular verbs is formed by adding –ed to the infinitive.Example:
We stopped at the duty-free store.
The simple past form of irregular verbs varies considerably.Example:
Th ey brought their dog.
a) What is the most popular free activity available all year long?
b) Which guided activity do you prefer?
c) Are there golf courses in the park?
d) Why do you have to be careful when cycling? Because the trails are
and sometimes .
LEARNING GRAMMAR NOTIONS
The park offers a variety of activities all year long. The most popular free activity is wildlife watching. You can also participate in guided activities such as hiking, boating, fishing, horseback riding and rafting. Golf is also available. Imagine the view of the mountains on the course at more than 1,000 metres above sea level!
The last but not the least popular activity is cycling. This is a healthy eco-friendly way to explore the park. Be careful on your bike, because the trails are winding and sometimes quite narrow.
In the winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are definitely interesting activities to do in this region: two pleasant ways of getting fresh air and exercising at the same time!

Here is a description of what Alexia saw yesterday.
Read it and illustrate what she saw in the space provided below. Draw the best you can, this is no drawing contest!
“Yesterday, I was at my picnic table near my tent after lunch, around 1:00 p.m., just sipping my tea. I saw a man coming out of my neighbour’s tent. He had a green garbage bag tucked under his arm and the neighbour’s axe in the other hand.
He was weird looking! He had a grey and red chequered shirt on and jeans. He was middle-aged, tall and very skinny. He wore a red cap on his head so I didn’t see the colour of his hair. But I’m sure he had glasses on. “

They can obtain all the information they need in order to send you the appropriate security or medical services. Be prepared to give your name, your location, with the closest cross street, and a brief description of the situation.
The operator taking your call will stay on line with you until the necessary services arrive. If you are hurt, she will help you stay calm while waiting for the ambulance.
