Dear Members of the ISB Community,   In just three months, in January, we will begin the year‐long celebration of the school’s 50th Anniversary. As we all know, the month of January was named for the Roman god who looked both forward and backward. As we approach our mid‐century, there will be plenty of retrospection and celebration of how far we have come since the founding of the school with one teacher and three children in a basement. We can look with special pride at the advances we have made in the last decade.  Elsewhere in this magazine, you can see our solid record in examinations and in college placement, even though it was a mere ten years ago that we graduated our first bacheliers, and the International Baccalaureate is even more recent at ISB. In just the past few years we have purchased the Cambridge campus (it is hard to believe we used to all fit in Arlington!) and added such improvements as science and math labs, a new playground, and most recently the beautifully renovated east wing.  However, like Janus, we also look to the future, to our next 50 years. In so doing, we build on a foundation that is very solid. But our future plans are even more ambitious, as they should be. The project to construct a new library and media center on the fourth floor will be the biggest challenge we have ever undertaken, both in the scale of the construction and in the size of our fundraising goal. But if we really want to be recognized as having academic programs that are not only unique but also among the best in Boston, we must give our students the facilities they need.  As we prepare for the next half‐century, we will also pub‐lish a new general strategic plan and more specifically an architectural plan for the full development of our cam‐pus, complete with ideas for a new theater, an improved gymnasium, and the general improvement of all our fa‐cilities.  We are where we are today only because all of those 

who came before us were bold enough to dream and to 

commit themselves not just to the present but to the 

future. In our current planning, the time line may only be 

for the next five to ten years. But we can be bold and 

hope that we are in turn laying new foundations and that 

those who are at ISB for the 75th Anniversary and the 

100th will look back and be amazed at what we, the cur‐

rent stewards of the school, dared to accomplish.

I am very proud to announce not only that all our 2011 French Baccalaureate seniors  received their diplomas, but also that the class average was 14, with two Highest Honors, four High Honors, and four Honors.  In addition, the results of the Brevet exams in ninth grade showed that all of the students who took the tests got honors, with 6 Highest Honors, 12 High Honors, and 6 Honors.

 While the most obvious manifestation of college counseling at ISB has been the creation of my beautiful new office on the 4th floor, a lot has been building since the start of the school year. Naviance, a user‐friendly web service with a wealth of infor‐mation on colleges and, tangentially, career choices, is now launched as part of the ISB college search and application process. Twelfth graders can take personality and career tests to get a sense of what careers they can pursue; they can cre‐ate their college lists and keep track of deadlines; they can see how they compare with former ISB students who have applied to colleges that interest them. (Of course all statistical information is presented anonymously.) The parents of seniors also have access to this website. The 11th grade students and their parents will be introduced to Naviance in January, at the first major meeting on the college counseling process.  ISB has already hosted many visits by representatives from both UK and American universities, and these visits will continue into December. Once again, ISB hosted an evening presentation by the uni‐versities of Edinburgh and Oxford about the UK application process and those two universities, an event open to the greater Boston community. King’s College, Imperial, and University College London presented their specific programs to the 11th and 12th graders, providing the students with a sense of the exciting richness and variety of options for their university careers.  Interested seniors and juniors can look forward to upcoming visits from Irish university representatives and representatives from North American colleges such as Wesleyan, UMass Amherst, Haverford, Vassar, and McGill. All visits are posted both in Naviance and on the Upper School portal.  On October 11, the entire Upper School population, but in particular 11th graders and their parents, were invited to listen to a panel of college admissions officers from Tufts, Northeastern, Boston Uni‐versity, and University of Vermont discuss the college admissions process, the nature of an American undergraduate degree, and student life in an American university.  In November, I will be traveling to Lisbon for the annual Council of International Schools Forum on International Admission and Guidance, a great opportunity for me to publicize our school and to  connect with university representatives from around the world.  Meanwhile, of course, the most worthwhile part of my job is to work with the students, helping them refine their college lists and perfect their essays, needed for both US and UK applications. ISB’s 2011 graduates have gone off to such institutions as McGill, the University of Chicago, MIT, INSA Lyon, Paris‐Dauphine, and Manchester, to name just a few. In line with ISB’s global perspective, our students are pursuing their education in globally recognized universities after leaving our school.

Meet Mason Craig, Our Student Services Supervisor And Coordinator of Our New Asian Program  

 

 My name is Mason Craig and I am originally from Melbourne, Florida but just recently relocated to the Boston area. I have spent several previous years living and teaching in Europe, mostly in Prague, Czech Republic, but I have also worked in Paris and Barce‐lona. Upon my return from Europe, I began working for a school in Florida developing their new Asian student program. I traveled to China to interview the best and brightest young people in the country. I first learned of ISB while there and I immediately felt that it was a school where  I could see myself working. The international flavor that the School offers makes it a truly unique educational experience  for everyone.  

Since arriving in July, I have been working on ISB’s new Asian Program and have been very happy with the quality of students that chose to study here. As everyone probably knows,  our new students are all intelligent, friendly, funny and kind. I love working with them and  I am excited to see what their future holds.  In addition to the Chinese Program, I have had the pleasure of meeting all of the students at ISB at lunch, free periods, homeroom and on our exciting trip to Project Adventure. As the  year moves on, I look forward to getting to know everyone better, from teachers to students.  If I haven’t learned your name yet, I apologize. Please bear with me for a few more weeks!              — Mason Craig, Student Services Supervisor

Speaking of Enrichment…. 

On Saturday September 24th, in the MPR of the Cam‐bridge Campus, the nurses Christine Higgins and Tina  DeAngelo spearheaded a CPR workshop for teachers, with the help of Life Support Systems.   About 20 teachers from all four divisions of the school participated in the workshop . They had hands‐on practice about all possible emergency situations and took quizzes as well, in order to obtain a CPR Certifi‐cation at the end of the day. 

Thanks to the PTO Enrich‐ment Program, Middle School students enjoyed a day of challenge and cooperative games with Project Adventure staff and teachers.   6th, 7th and 8th graders worked to‐gether to solve problems.  A great time was had by all.  Many thanks to the PTO, once again, for a wonderful  Enrichment Program.

ISB ART FAIR.  PAST AND FUTURE... 

The 2011 All‐School Art Exposition on Friday, May 20th  featured art work from all of our students in grades pre‐K to 12.  For two‐and‐a‐half days before the exhibit opened, Anne Bouwer, Sylvie Gori and Mohamed Saadi were busy transforming the gymnasium into an art  museum full of displays that included sculpture, mixed  media and painting.     Families attending Springfest the next day had additional time to admire the lovely variety of art work. We are all looking forward to seeing what our students create during the 2011‐2012 school year!

During  this past  summer of 2011,  the Lower School offered a French Immersion Summer Camp.  Current, former, and future ISB  students  attended  the  camp  in  addition  to many  non‐ISB students (which included students living all over Massachusetts as well as from Canada and Colombia!).   The French Camp pro‐vided an opportunity for the already French‐speaking students to continue practicing their French throughout the summer as well as exposed non‐French speaking campers to the wonderful language.  This summer’s overall theme was “The Senses,” with each week focusing on one of the five (tasting, smelling, touching, seeing, hearing).  Regardless of their level of French, all students were able  to  engage  and  participate  in  the wide  array  of  activities provided.   Here are just a few of the camp highlights from this past  summer:   During the “Tasting Week,” campers walked to the local farmer’s market  in  Davis  Square  to  purchase  locally  grown  vegetables, which they later used to make a very tasty ratatouille!     During  “Seeing  Week,”  students  learned  all  about  different French  artists  (such  as  Matisse,  Monet,  Seurat, etc.) and  then created many of  their own master‐pieces, which ranged from portraits, to landscapes, to Impressionism.    Throughout  the  final  week  of  camp,  “Hearing Week,” not only did they create their own musical instruments  but  they  also  wrote,  sang,  and  re‐corded their own songs!   On  our  fun weekly  field  trips, we  visited  exciting destinations  such  as  Drumlin  Farms  (where  we played with animals, smelled the flowers, explored fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits, etc.) and Hop‐kinton State Park (where we played and swam in the lake as well as went on mini‐hikes).    Join us in Summer 2012 for another great Lower School French Immersion Camp!!!                  — Darcy Babcock, Summer Program Director

Once upon a time, there was a very kind family that offered Apples to the school every day of the year!  Then that family went far far away, and there were no more Apples at the Front Desk.  A whole year went by, and almost every day students came to the Front Desk and said, "where are the Apples?" The next year when the questions started again, the school had an idea.  They called in an Appl‐odian, and pretty soon moms and dads (and staff) were signing up to offer Apples to the school!  So now we have Apples every Thursday, thanks to the kindness and generosity of many families.  If you have any questions about the Apples program, please see the Appl‐odian!

Karen Jouanigot has joined the "First Impressions" team on the morning shift, taking over from Marie Olivier who was appropriately promoted to Upper School Assistant this year.  Karen was born in Rosny‐sous‐Bois (a suburb of Paris); she and her four‐year‐old son, Oliver, have made their home here in the Boston area for several years now.  In addition to cheerfully greeting students and parents and tending to those multiple morning re‐sponsibilities, Karen teaches French in her "spare time."  

We are very happy to welcome this capable new member to the team!

MIRIAM B (8th Grade): I went scuba diving in Spain.  ANNA MATILDE T & ZOE R (9th): We went to a great concert in Rhode Island and then we went  to Egypt.  ECHO W (10th): I attended an Exhibition on Animation in Tokyo.  JULIETTE J (12th): I got to babysit for my 9‐month‐old cousin for a whole week.  FRANCOISE C (8th): I went tubing on a boat at Cape Cod and rode the biggest roller coaster  in Canada.  ANNE‐CAROLINE A‐P (6th): I went for a ride aboard Codzilla, a Boston Harbor boat that goes very very fast and makes everybody very very wet.  PALOMA D (5th): I went to horse camp and I'll always remember when I started cantering for the first time!  OSCAR B (5th): I took a historical tour of the famous Chateau Frontenac in Quebec.  PAUL‐ARTHUR D (11th): I spent two weeks teaching sailing to little kids on the Ile de Re in Brittany.  JEAN‐GHISLAIN D (7th): I wake‐boarded behind the “Gray Pearl” at the Ile de Re.  ANNE‐BRUNHILDE D (4th): I went "acro‐branching" while I was visiting my grandparents in the South of France.  SUNNY S (8th): I went into the Lacassal Desert in East Africa, where I saw tigers and other wildlife, even hyenas ‐‐ they were the scariest.

becoming Maternelle and Elementary Director in Beaune. Following positions at the Lycée Vin‐cent van Gogh in Amsterdam and the Lycée Français in Jerusalem, Sophie was Assistant Academic Director at the International School of Arizona. During her teaching career, Sophie has taught at all levels in pre‐school and ele‐mentary school. Bilingual in French and Span‐ish, she is also fluent in English and Italian.

LOWER School Reaches 216 Students!

 It was wonderful 

to welcome 216 Lower School stu‐dents. This in‐

cluded 190 re‐turning students, 

26 new students, 52 first graders of whom 35 were siblings of other students at ISB. All of these students representing  

26 nationalities!    Happy, diverse, beautiful children (and staff!) settling into the 2011‐2012 school year, and it is wonderful to have them all here on the campus of ISB.  We missed you all!

MIDDLE SCHOOL Grades 6-8

MIDDLE School Reaches 98 Students!

The Middle School welcomed 28 stu‐dents new to ISB this year, a record‐breaking num‐ber.  Having such an infusion of new stu‐dents has been very exciting for return‐ing students, who were thrilled to have so many new classmates.  Our new students have come from all around the world:   France, China, Ethiopia, 

Canada, Mexico, Djibouti, and the Philip‐pines!  Middle School students have quickly settled in and have held elections for the Mid‐dle School Student Council.   Many students enrolled in some of the new after‐school sports and club offerings and many students have al‐ready signed up to do community service hours helping out in the Lower School after‐school program.  On September 27th, students en‐joyed a day of cooperation and challenges with Project Adventure leaders who came to campus and ran a one‐day field day.  Many thanks to the PTO who sponsored the event through their Enrichment budget.  All in all, the Middle School is off to a great start, full of enthusiasm and positive energy!

UPPER SCHOOL Grades 9-12

UPPER School Reaches 125 Students!

 

After almost a month of school, it is time to re‐flect on the be‐ginning of a new exciting and suc‐cessful year to come. This year, we opened our doors to 125 students coming from all over the world. It will be such a tremen‐

dous experience for all of them to study to‐gether.  We planned a team‐building day to help our new and returning students start the school year in the best possible way. We went to Beverly, MA and experienced a fantastic sunny day full of activities and good spirit.  The Back to School night was very well attended. Our parents had the pleasure of seeing the re‐sults of the renovation of the 4th floor where Dr. Levy, our college counselor, has her office.  As Head of the Upper School, I am thrilled to see such a dynamic Upper School student body working with our dedicated faculty.  Mrs. Wood, Dr. Levy and I would like to convey our deepest gratitude to Marie Olivier, who has started her new position as Upper School Assis‐tant with energy and outstanding efficacy.

Lower  School Library News 

Hello from the Library!  I have been  enjoying getting to know all the students in grades 1‐5.  We have so many excited readers at ISB!  Some highlights: 5th graders have been learning about book genres to support what they are studying in French class, 4th graders have been given “Readingo” sheets and will receive prizes as they read books in English and French, and 3rd graders took turns ordering books from the ISB “Library Res‐taurant!”   Note to all families: The Lower School Library is open every afternoon until 4:15 pm, with extended hours on Mondays and Fridays (until 4:45 pm).   Please come visit!  Also, volunteers are always welcome!  If you are interested, please see me in the Library or email me at: Alissa Rosellini   arosellini@isbos.org               — Alissa Rosellini, Lower School Librarian

s... HAPPENINGS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL 

Caroline R., an ISB  8th grader, had an idea last spring.  The idea was to start a 

Middle School newspaper, run by students.  With a lot of hard work and persis‐

tence, Caroline’s idea has now become a reality and the first issue of “L’Echo du 

Collège” was printed on September 26.  The newspaper will be available in pa‐

per copy as well as on parent and student portals for all to enjoy.  Congratula‐

tions to Caroline and the newspaper team for this impressive accomplishment!   

6th grade students participated in a new orientation program during the opening week of school. The program introduced students to several key executive functioning skills including time‐estimation, organization, and planning; all important skills to the real life of ISB middle schoolers! Dur‐ing the orientation, students participated in a series of activities that included estimating the time it takes to get from one class to another, 

breaking down the steps to make a cup‐cake, and writing clear and detailed direc‐tions.   Connecting time calculations and cupcakes provided students with the oppor‐tunity to both test their skills and enjoy the results. A new Study Skills course is continu‐ing the theme of executive functioning throughout the first half of the year.

HAPPENINGS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL 

 

  

The Student Exploration program is off to a great start this year.   Several courses are continuing, including Robotics, Cooking,   and Architecture (see photo).  Additionally, there are a few new offerings this year such as Japanese Culture, taught by History‐Geography teacher Damien Miquel, and Stop‐Motion Animation, taught by art teacher Anne Bouwer.    As shown here, students were asked to build a solid structure,  as tall as possible, using tetrahedrons (a 4‐sided 3‐dimensional 

triangular form).  Their materials were 80 skewer sticks and 2 bags of marshmallows.  Students discussed why tetrahedrons are used in many buildings and bridges.    

The Middle School Student Council is up and running, ready for another exciting year in the Middle School.  Speeches were made and elections held on September 22nd and September  23rd.  The students are already planning their first events, which will include “Costumes for a Cause” on  Halloween and the first Middle School Dance on November 18th.   Members of the Middle School Student Council for 2011‐2012 are:    President:  Zeina F.  Vice‐President: Phillip P.   Secretary: Audrey L.  Treasurer:  Matias A.‐D.  Class Representatives:   Ben S. and Tony E. (6th grade);  Eva S. and Cooper G. (7th grade);  Cristelle B. and Sunny S. (8th grade) 

ISB’s first robotics team, the 

LegoSAPiens, was created last 

year and participated in their first competition last December.  The group worked through the spring to refine 

their skills and they are now gearing up for the competitions later in the fall.  The theme this year is “Food 

Safety” and students must build and program a robot for a variety of food safety challenges.  Additionally, the 

team needs to come up with an innovative solution to a food safety problem, research the issue and make a 

presentation at the competition.  With one year of experience under their belts, the team is raring to go and 

feels confident that they will be a team to reckon with in December!  Team members include Noah C., Gustave 

D., Emma C., Clara M., Lennart N., Kevin E., Olivier B., Ben S., Jules A., and Zachary Y.  Many thanks to coaches

Table Tennis Has Arrived! 

The ISB Sports and Athletics program has added an exciting new sports program, table 

tennis (sometimes known as Ping‐Pong). The program is currently offered to students 

from 3rd grade all the way up to 12th grade. On Thursday, September 8th an open house 

was hosted by coach Mozart François to introduce this thrilling new addition to ISB 

sports offerings. Many students, parents and teachers were able to attend and learn 

how table tennis will be integrated into ISB’s program. Mr. François is director of the 

Boston Table Tennis Academy and former coach of the Haitian National Table Tennis 

team. With its international flair and diversity, table tennis is a perfect fit here at ISB.

On Friday September 16th, the ISB Upper School boys’ soccer team kicked off their first official game. The team took the field at the Cambridge School of Wes‐ton, lead by co‐captains Nicolas A. and Jeremy W. With a hat‐trick from Jeremy, a brace from Lorenzo L. and further goals from Nicolas and Rafael B., the team was able to bring home an impressive 7‐0 victory for the team’s first interscholastic com‐petition.   The team’s full schedule can be found on the ISB website.
