o. FOREWORD

0.1 "Tbis Indian Standard (Firat Revision) w.~ adopted by theIndian Standards Institution on 30 November 1977, after the draftfinalized by the Fire Fighting Sectional Committee bad been approvedby the Civi 1Engineering Division Council.

0.2 Wooden extenlion ladden for fire filhtiDI purposes have alreadybeen covered in IS : 930-1977*. During the course of workins to thisstandard, it baa been r,lt that timber ladders being difficult to handlebecause of their heavy mul, orten present difficulties to the fire fightingpersonnel at the time or fire fighting. Aluminium ladders being lighterare BOW being preferred to timber ladders by the fire fighting penonnel.Thi. standard wa. published in 1968. Bued on the indigenousavailability of aluminium section this revision haa been prepared, theprincipal modification being relaxation in regard to the deflection.

0.2.1 The aluminium extension ladder consilt of one main and oneextending section. The design Ihall be such .s to ensure easy .tiding ofthe extending section without excessive clearance in the guide and overextenlion of the ladder. The extending section ihall be guidedthroughout the full range of extenlion in a manner such that thesections cannot separate. retaining clips being on the main section. If 10required. an operating gear it fixed to facilitate removal or the extenmUIsection for separate use.

'0.3 For the purpose of decidiDI whether a particular requirement ofthis .tandard is complied with. the final value, obaerved or calculated,espressing the result of a teat or aDalysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS : 2-1960f. The number of aignifieant placel retainedin the rounded off value should be the a.me u that of the specified valuein this Itandard.

I. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down the requirements regarding material, size,mass and performance tests of aluminium extenlion ladders for firefighting pus:poael.

2. GENERAL

2.1 Ladder - The width of the extending section inside itl strings shallbe not less than 30 em- The rounds ,hall be with non-slip serrationsrunning the full length, These shall be fixed by expanding and flaringand .hall be spaced at 25 em centre to centre.

2.2 Salet, Device - The heals of the stiles or strings of lower sectionihall be fitted with rubber feet. The pawls shall be bolted to stiles orItriogl and their action ahall be lucb that they are let for -engagementuntil they have been rested on a round, and trip to clear immediatelythe ladder i. extended.

3. MATERIAL

3.1 The aluminium alloy section for .tile. or Itrings sball conform toGrade H~20 (in WP temper ~ of IS : 3921-1966. or IS: 733-1975t.

3.2 The aluminium alloy section used tor the rounds of the ladder shallconform to Grade HV ( in W temper) of IS : 1285·197~t.

3.3 Aluminium alloy latch Ihall be produced from aluminium alloyconforming to IS Designation A-6 orIS : 617·197~§ by chill casting.

S.4 Rubber feet of aluminium ladder shall have .hear bardness of~O to 60.

4. SIZB

4.1 Extension ladders when rully extended Ihall be in tbe three sizes,namely, 4-5 m, 7-5 m and 10-5 m ( '" Fi,. 1 )•

5. MASS

5.1 The ladders shall be as light as possible, their total mass shall notexceed as given below:

10·5 m

6. TEST REQ.UI~EMENTS

6.1 De8ectioD - The fully extended ladder shall be placed acrosstrestles, positioned 90 cm from each end, On a 30 em wide board placedacross the strings at the centre of the span, a load of 373.N ( 38 kgf)shall be .applled, allowed to remain there for a period of not less than1 minute and then removed, A load of 736 N (75 kgf) shall then begradually applied and the deftection due to this load shall not exceed30 em measured from the original position. The load shall then begradually increased to 1128 N ( 115 kgf) and the additional deflectionshall not exceed 50 percent of the deftection obtained with the 736 N( 75 "kgf). There shall be no sign of distress_

6.2 StreDgtla 01 Ro..a6.2.-1 With the feet of the Iadder at a distance of "2-5 m in the case of

IO-Sm, 1-75 m in the case of 7·5m, and I-25m in the case of 4·5m ladderfrom wall, the ladder shall be fully extended and its bead rested against thewall. A load of 320 kgf shall then be gradually applied to the middle ofat lealt one round in each section by means or a metal hook baving abearing surface 5 em wide and suitably lined to prevent bruising of theround. No sign of failure shall be apparent either in the round or at itsjunction with the strings.

6.2.2 The fully extended ladder shall be placed vertically and a manweighing approximately 75 kg shall jump on each round from the roundimmediately above. No sign of failure shall be apparent either in theround or at its junction with the strings during this test,

6.2.3 The fully extended ladder shall be placed horizontally acrosstrestles. One man weighing approximately 75 kg shall walle over therounds. No sign of failure shall be apparent either in the round or at ·itsjunction with the strings during this test.

6.3 Sway - When pitched against a wall with feet of the ladder1-25 m, 1-75 m and 2-5 m away froID the wall in the cue of 4-5 m,7'5 m and 10·~ m ladders respectively and two men are ascending theladder or one man carrying another while descending the ladders, itshall not away_

6." Eateldloa - The ladder shall be capable of being extended by oneman by meana of rope [ manila 45 mm in circumference (", IS : 1084­1969* )] over a pulley on the main section to the required length. Theladder Ihall allo be not over extended.

7. MARKING

7.1 Each extension ladder sball be clearly and permaneDtlymarked withthe following information:
