General Information

• What is OIT?– OIT provides faculty, staff, and students with a variety of

audiovisual equipment for classroom use as well as special events. Delivery and setup of equipment is included.

– Through the newly established Academic Technology Center (ATC) OIT assists faculty with the integration of technology into the classroom.

– OIT is also responsible for providing support for the Distance Learning centers on campus.

Who May Borrow Equipment?

• Equipment is available for loan to faculty, staff, and students to support official University programs and events.

• During heavy booking situations, priority is given to teaching faculty and institutional level events.

• Faculty should request equipment for student use.

• Delivery and setup of equipment in the classroom.• Videotape student presentations in the classroom.• Videotape lectures and special events, with the

permission of the presenter.• Downlink teleconferences via satellite. Proper

license must be secured by the requester.• Off-air program copies. Special guidelines apply.• Duplicating video tapes. Copyright rules apply.

Academic Technology Center(ATC)

• Opened in November, 1998• A team was created to help establish the center • Purpose: To provide a designated area where staff and

students will assist faculty and staff with the integration of technology into the curriculum.

• Main Focus: Academics • Faculty interested in putting their course materials on the

Web or who want to create a PowerPoint presentation can get assistance from the ATC.

• TechCons - the ATC is staffed by students who have experience in designing web sites and using multimedia.

ATC - Customer Needs Assessment

• This involves meeting with faculty and staff, analyzing how they would like to use technology, and then providing them with direction and assistance to accomplish their goals.

ATC -Web Consulting

• TechCons will be available to assist faculty and staff in developing and/or transferring course content or personal home pages on the Web. Students will assist faculty and staff in designing their web site via storyboarding and format their documents with the appropriate HTML codes.

• It is not necessary for faculty and staff to have experience with HTML coding.

ATC -Assistance with PowerPoint

• Provide assistance to faculty and staff in creating/designing PowerPoint presentations to meet their needs. This includes storyboarding the presentation and incorporating text, graphics (photos and clipart), animation, Web links and backgrounds.

• TechCons will be available to assist faculty and staff in using multimedia resources in the ATC such as scanners, digital cameras and color printers.

Web Courseware Tools

• Full blown products that enable the user to easily put a course on the Web for teaching purposes. These products consist of many components such as listservs, chat rooms, assignments, tests/quizzes, course content

• Last year, working with OID, five faculty members evaluated five of these products and narrowed the choice down to two - WEBCT and COURSEINFO

Future - Web Courseware Projects

• During the Spring semester further evaluation will take place by some faculty members and ATC team members

• By the end of the Spring semester one of the packages will be selected as the standard university courseware tool and will be available for Fall 1999

Distance Education - Definition

• Distance education is planned learning that occurs in a different place from teaching and as a result requires special techniques of course design, special instructional techniques, special methods of communication by electronic and other technology, as well as special organizational and administrative arrangements (Moore, Michael G. and Greg Kearsley. Distance Education: A Systems View, 1996)

formerly St. Thomas 589)

• Panuska 110 serves as classroom as well

• Panuska 213 is dedicated to videoconferences

• CMC has a videoconference classroom

• VTEL equipment in both rooms (TC 5000 in PAN 110 and LC 3000 in PAN 213)
