What is WeldingWhat is Welding• Welding is an operation to join two parts together homogeneously. • In this process high current is passed through the Welding Electrode and Work piece.

This high current melts both the work piece and /or welding electrode and the molten metal is poured in the weld joint ie similar to Casting Process

• In any construction or Fabrication industry welding operation plays a vital role and often the product quality is determined by welding Quality.

• The welding operation and inspection of welding is a complex in nature due to many process variables involved in Welding.

• Hence the welding is often termed as "Special Process" which requires to be qualified and established.

• Basically, the Welding Quality is determined by the Welder and Welding Inspector. It is also important that these personnel are properly Trained, Qualified and certified in their respective discipline.

• There are many welding process but not limited to:-– Manual metal arc welding – TIG Welding– MIG/MAG Welding– Plasma Welding

What is Non-Destructive Testing ( NDT)

• NDT is an examination process to examinethe Quality of Materials such as Welding,Forging, Casting etc

• Non-Destructive examination is inspectingthe part without damaging the part ordestroying the part. So, after NDT, thepart can be used for intended application

• There are many Methods available butnot limited to:-– Radiography test (RT)

• In RT, the X-rays are passedthrough the object and filmedsimilar to our medical X-ray

What is Non-Destructive Testing ( NDT)

Ultrasonic Test (UT)• In UT, The High Frequency

sound waves are passedthrough the object andreceived. The time durationof sound waves is analysedand projected in the screen.This is similar to medicalultrasound Scanning.

What is Non-Destructive Testing ( NDT)Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)• In MT, The material is magnetised. If there is any defect in

the part, magnetic lines are deflected and identified

What is Non-Destructive Testing ( NDT)

Penetrant Testing (PT)In PT, The part is applied with

chemicals such as penetrant,Cleaner and Developer. Thismethod works on theprinciple of Capillary actionand gravity.

• Welding Inspection– ITI / Any Diploma / Any Degree
