On April 25, 2015, at Cedar Valley College, Epsilon Tau Chapter, in partnership with Cedar Valley College, Joycelyn Caesar and Thoughtworks hosted Black Girls CODE- Dallas for a one day computer coding workshop. Over 200 parents, girls, and volunteers came to the Lancaster Campus so the girls could Build A Game in a Day using the computer software SCRATCH. Ninety students from the Southern Sector of Dallas were able to attend this fun-filled day. Epsilon Tau Chapter through Epsilon Tau Outreach was the event sponsor. We provided 50 scholarships to insure that lower-income students in the Southern Sector of Dallas could participate in the day at no cost; assembled the Panelists and designed the program for the Building a Future in STEM parent’s workshop; provided breakfast, lunch and snacks for the day; and volunteered for the event.

Black Girls CODE (BGC) is a national organization whose mission is to increase the number of women of color in the digital space by empowering girls of color ages 7 to 17 to become innovators in STEM fields, leaders in their communities, and builders of their own futures through exposure to computer science and technology. After participating in last year’s Black Girls Code- DALLAS workshop, Epsilon Tau’s Business Month chair, Michelle Peace believed that girls in the Southern Sector of Dallas County would benefit from such a great program. She began discussions with Joycelyn Caesar and through Ms. Caesar’s professional affiliations with Cedar Valley College and a ThoughtWorks project manager, planning began in September to sponsor this event. Epsilon Tau is extremely pleased with the outcome of the program where 95% of the participants stated they would like to learn more!

World watch out, Epsilon Tau FIL Crenden Boyd seen at the computer to the right is a Codenista! During the workshop show and tell, the BGC workshop teacher said that Crenden could probably code in the real world right now. Crenden showed several of the girls how to code items above and beyond what they were scheduled to learn in the workshop.

Dean of Intake, Shelia Fisher conducted Epsilon Tau’s New Member Orientation for sorors on Saturday, May 2, 2015. The Agenda included: a review of our Iota Tools: the Iota Workbook, Protocol Handbook, chapter yearbook, and the Bylaws; review of sorority protocol; a review of the candle lighting ceremony. Although this sorority orientation is suited for sorors with three years or less in the sorority, it is always good to have a refresher for the entire membership.

Epsilon Tau celebrated its 2nd Anniversary at a location that holds a special place in the hearts of its charter members, The Twisted Root in Deep Ellum. The evening began at 7:00 PM just like our chartering ceremony on May 4, 2013.

The past two years have been exciting times for our chapter. Our membership has doubled in size since the day Immediate Past SWR Director, Charlotte Berry chartered our chapter.

We thank our mother chapter, Psi Chapter for supporting our efforts and preparing us for our journey as a chapter in Iota land. We thank the ten gladiators who continue to forge new paths, relationships and opportunities for our chapter and its members. We thank each new soror, FIL, and MOI for their sacrifice to make ET great.

The second anniversary gift guide says the traditional gift is cotton, because it signifies the ability to adapt and durability. That is very apropos. It describes part of the journey we have experienced as a two year old chapter.
