Introduction

You can use mind maps to help with many aspects of your academic work, for example: assignments, revision, time management and group work. This booklet illustrates how to use the basic features of MindView to create a mind map. However, MindView has a lot of features. It is recommended that after using this booklet, you explore more of what MindView offers.

1. Open MindView

1. Click on the Start button to open the Start menu, shown in Fig 1.2. Type ‘MindView’ in the search box, shown in Fig 2

MindView 5.0 will be listed in the Start menu. 3. Click on MindView to open it. Fig 1

2. Create a new mind map

When you open MindView a dialogue box opens, shown in Fig 3.

1. Click on New Document2. Click on Mind Map.3. Click on Open.

MindView opens ready for you to create your mind map, shown in Fig 4.

3. Create a mind map from a template

4. To view the templates, click on New from Template, shown in Fig 3.This will open the templates folders, as shown in Fig 5.

5. Click on each category to view the templates available. You can use a template as a starting point for your own mind map.

4. Open an existing mind map

1. Click on Open Document, shown in Fig 3.The ‘Open’ dialogue box will open

2. Browse to where your mind map is saved, shown in Fig 6

3. Click on the mind map you want to open4. Click on Open, shown in Fig 6.

5. Use the FILE tab to open documents

If MindView is already open, you can use the FILE tab to create new documents.

1. Click on the FILE tab, shown in Fig 7. From here you can open a new mind map, a template, or a mind map you’ve previously created and want to work on again.

6. Create root idea and branches for your mind map

MindView opens with a single root idea or ‘subject’, from which the mind map branches will grow. It is shown in Fig 8.Note: you can have several mind maps open. Each mind map has its own tab. The Essay Planning tab is circled in Fig 8.

1. Type in the main idea for your mind map where it says ‘Subject’. To create a new branch:

2. Click on the HOME tab3. Click on branch.

To create a sub branch4. Click on the branch you want

To create a branch, use the Enter key. To create a sub-branch, use the Insert key.

7. Customise your mind map design

There are several ways to customise your mind map. The first way is to choose an inbuilt design.

1. Click on the DESIGN tab, shown in Fig 10.

2. Click on the down arrow in the styles window.This will open a drop down menu of styles, shown in Fig 11.

3. Click on the style you want for your mind map.The style is now applied.

8. Customise the colour scheme of your mind map

You can customise the colour of your mind map.

1. Click on the DESIGN tab.2. Click on Colour Scheme,

shown in Fig 12.

This will open a drop down menu of colour schemes.3. Click on the colour you want.The colour scheme is now applied.

9. Reset the colour

If you decide that you don’t like the colour scheme, you can reset to the original style.

1. Click on the DESIGN tab.2. Click on Reset Style,

shown in Fig 13.

10. Change the colour of individual branches

You can change the colour of individual branches to make them stand out from the overall mind map design.

1. Click on the branch you want to change.2. Click on the FORMAT tab, shown in Fig 14.3. Click on Fill Color.

This will open the drop down colour options.4. Click on the colour you want to change the branch shape to

11. Change the shape of individual branches

You can change the shape of individual branches to make them stand out from the overall mind map design.

1. Click on the branch you want to change.

2. Click on the FORMAT tab.3. Click on Branch Shape.

This will open a drop down menu of shapes.

4. Click on the shape you want.The shape is now applied.

12. Apply a boundary to a branch and its sub-branches

You can apply a boundary shape to a branch and sub-branches.

1. Click on the branch you want to apply the boundary to2. Click on the FORMAT tab3. Click on Boundary, shown in Fig 16.

The boundary is now applied to that branch and its sub-branches

13. Change the colour of a boundary

It can be useful to distinguish groups of ideas by applying different coloured boundaries.

1. Apply the boundary to your branch and sub branches (see Task 12).2. Click on the FORMAT tab.3. Click on Fill Color, shown in Fig 17.

This will open a drop down menu of colour options.4. Click on the colour you want the boundary to be.5. The colour is now applied.

14. Move branches and sub-branches

If you want to move your branches around you can drag and drop them where you want them to belong.

1. Left click on the branch you want to move.2. Drag it to the branch you want it to belong to.

In Fig 18, the idea ‘get the gist of your argument’ has been dragged from Essay Planning and put with ‘Starting to Write’.

15. Insert clipart images

1. Click on the Multimedia Catalogue (at the right hand side of your MindView screen), shown in Fig 19.

2. Type your key word in the Search for box.You can also browse the folders shown

3. Click on the clip art image you want and drag it to the root idea or branch you want it to appear with.

To drag:

Left click in the clipart image Keep the mouse clicked Move the image to the root idea or

branch

You can insert your own images on to your mind map.

1. Click on the root idea or branch where you want to insert the image.2. Click on the INSERT tab.3. Click on Branch Picture, shown in Fig 20.

The Open dialogue box now appears, shown in Fig 214. Browse to where the image is saved.5. Click on the image6. Click on Open.

The image is now inserted.

17. Delete a picture

1. Click the picture to activate it.

2. Right click the mouse. This will open a drop down menu, shown in Fig 22.

3. Click on Delete4. Click on Branch

Picture.

18. Insert icons

Icons can flag up or assign priority to specific areas of your mind map.

1. Click on the root idea or branch.2. Click on the INSERT tab.3. Click on Icons, shown in Fig 22.

This will open a drop down list of options.

4. Click on the icon you want to use.5. The icon is now assigned to your

root idea or branch.

Note: You can use multiple standard icons but only one icon from the other groups.

19. Insert a text note

If you want to add more detailed information to a branch, you can use a text note.

1. Click on the root idea or branch you want to add notes to.

2. Click on the INSERT tab.3. Click on Text Note, shown in Fig 23.

This will open the Text Editor at the bottom of the screen. It will look similar to the one in Fig 24.

4. Type in your notes.5. When you want to close the Text Note Editor, click

the X at the top right, shown in Fig 24.

The root idea or branch you wrote notes for will now display a paper clip icon, shown in Fig 25.

6. To display or edit the note, click on the paper clip.The ‘dddd’ icon appears, shown in Fig 25.

7. Click on the ‘dddd’ icon.The editor will re-open.

20. Export your mind map to Word

You can display your mind map as linear notes or you can export it as an image to Word or PowerPoint.

1. Click on the FILE tab, shown in Fig 262. Click on Export.3. Click on Microsoft Word.

4. Click on Advanced Word Export.This will open the Advanced Word Export dialogue box, shown in Fig 27.

5. Choose the style you want.

Note: Experiment with the different styles to see which you prefer. You might need to adjust the numbering and styles once your mind map is exported to Word.

6. This will open the Save As dialogue box, shown in Fig 26.7. Browse to where you want to save the document.8. Keep the file name MindView has given you, or type in another one.9. Click on Save.

10. When you click on ‘Save’, the ‘Microsoft Word Export’ dialogue appears, shown in Fig 27.

11. Click on Open Document.Your mind map will now open as a Word document.
