Retailing refers to a set of businessactivities that adds value to theproducts and services sold toconsumers for their personal or familyuse

Retailing is no limited to sale ofproducts in a stores and involvesservices such a overnight lodging inhotel a a haircut, a DVD rental or ahome delivered pizza.

Retailer refers to a business that sellsproducts and/or services to consumersfor personal or family use.

• Barter system was known as the first form of Retail

• Followed by Kirana Stores and Mom & Pop Stores

• Finally Manufacturing era necessitated the small stores and specialtystores.

• It was a seller’s market till this point of time with limited number ofbrands available

• 1980s experienced slow change as India began to open up economy.

• The latter half of the 1990s saw a fresh wave of entrants with a shiftfrom Manufactures to Pure Retailers.

• Post 1995 onwards saw an emergence of shopping centers

• Emergence of hyper and super markets trying to provide customerwith 3 Vs - Value, Variety and Volume

• Expanding target consumer segment
