Understanding by Design
Enduring Understanding The research process is a flexible method for
acquiring, evaluating, understanding and using information.
Essential Questions How do I find pertinent information? How do I evaluate the reliability of the information? Does the information increase my understanding of
the topic? How does my increased understanding help me to
understand other issues?
Understanding by Design Students will know:
The purpose and use of library information sources
How to evaluate information for bias, authority and point of view
How to narrow/enlarge the scope of their inquiry
Students will be able to: use the ARHS library and its print and non-print
resources to access information effectively and efficiently
write a critically annotated bibliography use keyword and subject searches appropriately, use
Boolean searching, truncation and wildcards

Reflection statement excerptsMy partner and I learned a lot about the research process. It was
so valuable to do this project not just because of what we learned on the topic, but also the whole process. One aspect is using the online data bases. I personally had only used Proquest and found the others very useful as well without this project I wouldn’t have known they existed. I also learned about reference books and I had also never used any books from any library. I am now able to use these books and cite them using Noodlebib. I also wrote my first annotated bibliography using the online based Noodlebib. It was great that there was a rubric and an example to follow. I have learned a lot about the topic and research in general. I think that it was a terrific idea to do the research project using the library in health, that way we can research something that actually means something to us.
