Environmental Management standards - a brief history
• 1992: BSI publishes BS 7750, the world’s first environmental management systems standard
• 1993: ISO TC 207 established, with the aim of using BS 7750 as a template
• 1994: BS 7750 revised
• 1995: UKAS accredits 8 CBs as BS 7750 certifiers (20 companies receive their BS 7750 certificates)
• 1996: ISO 14001 published as an international standard
• 2004: 1st revision of ISO 14001
• 2006: More 110,000 ISO 14001 certificates issued in 136 markets
• 2011: 2nd periodic review of ISO 14001 commences
• 2013: ISO 14001 certificates estimated at 267,000

Mission Statement:
• Develop and maintain standards in the field of environmental management systems that meet stakeholder needs, are market based and support sustainability

Mandate for ISO 14001 revision
• The revision shall be based on the ISO/TMB approved requirements and application guidance related to the JTCG work on the High Level Structure (HLS) for Management System Standards (MSS) and its identical text, common terms and core definitions
• The revision shall consider the final report of the ISO/TC 207 SC 1 "Future Challenges for
EMS" Study Group
• The revision shall ensure the maintenance and improvement of the basic principles of ISO 14001:2004, and also the retention and improvement of its existing requirements
