Cha Cha Cha CH - Intro - 1 S#5 2001 Introduction to Cha Cha Cha General Information The Cha Cha Cha is a development from the Mambo, originally a Haitian dance which migrated through Cuba to the United States in the late 1940’s. There are three forms of Mambo, single, double, and triple. The triple has five steps to the measure, and it is this form of the Mambo that evolved into the Cha Cha Cha. It has been suggested that the name Cha Cha Cha was derived from imitating the sound of the "shoes" of the Cuban women when dancing the triple or chassé steps. The Cha Cha Cha also has close ties to the Rumba in fact the English considered the Mambo as a fast version of the Rumba. All three forms of dance originated as Haitian dances and consequently many of the named figures were common for the three forms of dance and were varied mainly in the number of steps being danced and the tempo of the music. The Rumba was first introduced in the United States in the 1930's and in England in the late 1940's. What has become the Cha Cha Cha was recognized by the English in the early 1950's and characterized at that time as a Rumba danced with extra steps. Walter Laird (IDTA) is recognized as the first person to standardize and publish figures of Latin Dancing. The publication included the Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble, and the Jive. Musical Timing The time signature for Cha Cha Cha is 4/4, with a normal tempo range of 28 - 34 measures per minute. Five steps are normally taken to each measure of music using a rhythm of 1, 1, 1/2, 1/2, 1. This is interpreted as whole beat, whole-beat, half-beat, half- beat, whole beat. In authentic music a very definite rhythmical beat is heard in each measure with the second beat being accented resulting in an overall rhythm of 1, 2, 3, 4/&, 1, 2, 3, 4/&, 1, etc. This would have the dancers normally taking their steps on beats 2, 3, 4/&, 1. This is the step timing used by ballroom dancers and in most competitive dancing. In Round Dancing it seams easier for the dancers to recognize the first beat of a measure, therefore dancing a step timing of 1, 2, 3/&, 4. Because most Round Dancers prefer the step timing beginning on the one beat, this manual will be written to that timing. If using this timing, the dancer must remain true to the timing of each step to keep the proper feel or "flavor" of the Dance. It is very easy to "slop" the chassé timing and accomplish the three steps over both whole beats. Remember it is Cha/Cha Cha not Cha Cha Cha. The first two steps of the Chassé are 1/2 beats. The last step is a whole beat. This is true whether danced on the first or second beat, which is occasionally used by Round Dance choreographers. Occasionally routines use Guapacha timing (pronounced whappacha). Guapacha timing is a variation of normal timing and is usually only included in some higher level routines. The time value is to hold the first beat and take the first two steps of a figure on the second beat, e.g., hold, &/2, 3/&, 4. This timing lends itself to certain figures such as the Time Step or Cross Basic. Footwork Most steps are taken with pressure on the ball of the foot and as weight is taken the heel is lowered to the floor. The primary difference between American style and International style Cha Cha Cha is the knee action on the whole beats and the chassés. There is more bending of the knee, and the heel is raised farther off the floor in American style Cha Cha Cha than in International style. There is a slight bending of the knee in International style, however it almost appears that the dancers are stepping onto a straight leg. Also on the back break the dancers hold the forward leg almost straight in International style and allow it to bend in American Style. Introduction to Cha Cha Cha

General Information The Cha Cha Cha is a development from the Mambo, originally a

Haitian dance which migrated through Cuba to the United States in the late 1940’s.

Musical Timing The time signature for Cha Cha Cha is 4/4, with a normal tempo range of

28 - 34 measures per minute. Five steps are normally taken to each measure of music using a rhythm of 1, 1, 1/2, 1/2, 1. This is interpreted as whole beat, whole-beat, half-beat, half-beat, whole beat.

Footwork Most steps are taken with pressure on the ball of the foot and as weight is taken

the heel is lowered to the floor. As the dancer lowers weight to the heel, the weighted leg straightens. As the weight releases from the opposite foot, the hips move softly sideways in the direction of the weighted foot. This is not a forced sideways action. It should

only be the natural movement sideways of the hips caused by straightening of the leg and the starting of movement to the other foot. The farthest displacement of the hip is when you are about to take weight on the next step. Any variations to this general principle will be explained in the figure descriptions. The lengths of the step are relatively small, allowing the body to be comfortably moved over the weighted foot. If the steps taken are too long, loss of balance will often occur, especially on turning steps. Generally steps one, two and five will be of the same length and steps three and four will be only half as long, as they use only half beats. Normally keeping the weight forward with the hips pulled back will enable the ball flat action. The toeing out of the feet will allow better balance control.

Dance Position Closed Dance Position - Stand facing partner about six inches apart. The man's right hand will be on the lady's left shoulder blade. The lady's left arm will be on the man's right arm. Join the man's left and the lady's right hands at about the man's eye level. If viewed from the top down, the dancers' arms should almost make a circle. Unlike in the smooth rhythms there will be little or no offset or exaggerated top line. The dancers should be nearly eye to eye. Open Facing position – Man’s right and lady’s left hands joined with the elbows bent and tucked in towards the waist. The joined hands will thus be at waist level. Both dancers should "push" very slightly toward one another with these joined hands to create a feeling of being "connected" so the lady can receive the man's lead. Left Open Facing position – Man’s left and lady’s right hands joined with the elbows bent and tucked in towards the waist. The joined hands will thus be at waist level. Both dancers should "push" very slightly toward one another with these joined hands to create a feeling of being "connected" so the lady can receive the man's lead.

Other dance positions will be explained in the descriptions of the figures as necessary. The important thing to remember in any position with a handhold is to maintain the “connection”. This is so the dancers can move together, so to speak, even when they are apart and accomplishing different foot patterns.

Hand and Arm Positions A “rule of thumb” is that the free hand is held in close to the

body when the couple are close to each other and out and slightly up when the couple are in any of the open positions. The lady’s hand and arms are generally used with more expression, some might even say seductively, whereas the man’s are more subtle. Personal interpretation or feeling is a good guide; the actions should look and feel natural to the dancer and not detract from the figure. There should, however, be some hand and arm movement with most figures to fulfill the "nature" of the dance. Hand and arm actions will be included in some figure descriptions when considered common to the figure.

The Cha Cha Cha Chassé In its basic form this figure consists of three steps, danced on

counts 1&2 or 3&4. There are six basic directions of the chassé, side to left, side to right, forward (left foot), forward (right foot), backward (left foot), and backward (right foot). Each form of the chassé will be detailed in the charts that follow. The chassé may be taken with or without turn in any forward, backward, or sideways direction. It may also remain on the spot. An alternate form of the chassé utilizes the Latin Cross and may be danced by the man, lady or both when dancing forward or backward. This action adds a slight crossing of the moving foot on the "&" count. When moving forward the toe of the back foot is placed near the heel of the front foot, with the toe turned out. The knee of the back foot will tuck behind the knee of the forward foot. The footwork on the forward chassé would be ball-flat, ball, ball-flat.

Introduction (continued) Cha Cha Cha

CH - Intro - 3

When moving backward, the instep of the front foot is placed near the toe of the back foot [half-crossed], with the toe turned out. The knee of the front foot will close to the knee of the back foot. The footwork on the backward chassé would be ball, ball-flat, ball-flat. Other types of the chassé are the Rondé Chassé and the use of three steps of a Cuban Break. The different chassés will be described with technique, individually, on the following pages. They will be included with each figure description in which they are commonly used; however, they will not be described in the detail they are here in the introduction. If more than one type of chassé can be used with any figure only one will be noted in the body of the figure description. The others will be noted in the "General Notes".

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN & LADY (Lady opposite) Start in Closed Position facing the WALL. [Step 1.] Side on the right foot, ball-flat. The leg will start to straighten and the hips will start to move to the right. The length of the step should be half that of the normal step. [Step 2.] The left foot will almost close to the right foot, ball flat. Both knees should be slightly bent and the hips should be directly under the body. Do not try to close the feet as there is not time when only a half beat of music is available. [Step 3.] Side on the right foot, ball-flat. Allow the right leg to straighten fully and the hips to move strongly to the right. The left leg should be straight also.

GENERAL NOTES

The Chassé to the Right may also be danced in Butterfly position, Open position, Left Open position and without hands joined. The direction stated above is only to describe the figure. The figure may be danced facing any direction. The Chassé may be repeated in a single measure with timing 1&2 3&4 by man and lady interchanging footwork and direction between the 1&2 and 3&4. The Chassé to the Right is used in the last half of the Back Basic and similar figures started with man’s R (lady’s L) foot as steps 3&4.

of the left foot (Latin Cross), toeing out. Left knee closed to front of right knee, both slightly bent. Tips will be directly under the body. [Step 3.] With a right shoulder leading, back on the left foot, toeing out, ball-flat. The left leg will straighten, and the hips will move strongly to the left. The right knee will flex, slightly releasing the right heel from the floor.

GENERAL NOTES

As described, this figure is also called the Chassé Lock or Cha Cha Lock.

The foot action on step two is the Latin Cross, a lock step; however, the feet do not lock at the ankle as in the Quickstep, for example. The cross is when the feet cross each other's line of movement.

In it’s basic or simplest form, step 2 (man & lady) of the Forward Chassé would be a half-closing step, the Latin Cross would not be used.

The Forward Chassé (Right Foot) may also be danced in Butterfly position, Open position, Left Open position and without hands joined. The direction stated above is only to describe the figure. The figure may be danced facing any direction. The Forward Chassé (Right Foot) may be danced as steps 8, 9, 10 of the Open Basic [Basic Movement from Open Facing Position] or as steps 3, 4, 5 of figures started with man’s R (lady’s L) foot.

When the Forward Chassé (Right Foot) is danced in a facing position the lady is dancing the man’s footwork for the Backward Chassé (Left Foot). To dance the Backward Chassé (Left Foot) we need only to reverse the positions of the man and lady such that the man is backing, as described briefly below.

The figure may be danced facing any direction. Either form of the Backward Chassé (Left Foot) may be danced as steps 3, 4, 5 of the Open Basic [Basic Movement from Open Facing Position] or as steps 3, 4, 5 of many figures started with man’s L (lady’s R) foot.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in Closed Dance Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Moving forward through the body step forward left foot turning body up to 1/8 RF, ball/flat, checking forward movement. The left arm should lower indicating for the lady to turn more. [Step 2.] Replace the weight onto the right foot, ball/flat and lead lady to the right side across steps 2 and 3. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Dance a back Chassé Left/right left. Lower left arm to hip height late on step 4. As weight is taken to the flat of foot on step 5 the left arm must be held firm so that the lady can use it to aid in her hip twist. [Step 6.] Step back on the right foot, checking the movement, ball/flat, commence to lead lady to Fan position. [Step 7.] Toeing out replace the weight forward onto the left foot, ball/flat. Retain firm left side lead to prevent the lady from over travel as she continues moving to Fan position. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] With the right leg moving side and slightly forward, dance a Right Chassé using small steps to avoid over extension of left arm and hand.

LADY

Start in Closed Dance Position facing center of the hall. [Step 1.] Retain firm right arm and hand connection with man’s left arm and hand to assist in a strong turn to the right on the left foot ending back on the right foot ball/flat turning up to 1/2 right face. The left leg will remain forward. [Step 2.] Toeing out, replace the weight onto the left foot, swivel turn up to 5/8 left face, ball/flat, across steps 2, 3, and 4. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] With the right foot moving forward, Chassé Lock toward man’s right side. End with weight well forward on the right foot on step 5. Between step 5 and 6 using the man’s firm left arm and hand, swivel lower body up to 3/8 right face (Hip Twist - shoulders turn less). Left foot should be close to the right foot as Hip Twist is done. [Step 6.] Step forward toward LOD on the left foot, ball/flat. [Step 7.] Step forward on the ball of the right foot then turn left face to end facing the man with right foot back and lower to the right heel. The left leg will be forward toward the man. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Back Chassé Lock LRL shaping to the left on the last step.

GENERAL NOTES

The figure is frequently danced using handshake on steps 1 thru 5, changing to normal lead hands between steps 5 and 6. The man may dance the Rondé Chassé [see Introduction Section] on steps 3,4,5; this variation is frequently used in combination with the handshake hold for steps 1 thru 5.

The figure may be ended in open or closed dance positions by the man turning to the left (following the lady) on steps 7 through 10. If ended in open or closed position then the man’s steps 8 thru 10 would normally be a forward Chassé Lock (Cha Cha Lock).

Use foot, leg, and hip action as described in Introduction Section of Cha Cha Cha.

[Step 8.] Close the left foot to right, ball/flat, returning to starting position.

GENERAL NOTES Step 8 (lady) may be danced by crossing the left foot in front of right. The decision is usually based upon the amount of turn made on the prior step and the relative closeness of the couple. The Sliding Door may be danced from any initial alignment and is often repeated in contemporary choreography. Use foot, leg and hip Technique as described in the Introduction.

GENERAL NOTES

Quite often the Aida is danced by the man and lady turning toward each other on step 1. If the figure is entered this way then the first turn will be almost 1/4 toward each other and the turn on the second step will be away from each other almost 1/2. The dancers would achieve the "V" back to back position on the first step of the back Chassé.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Fan Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Step forward with the left foot, ball-flat. The right foot will remain almost in place. [Step 2.] Recover to the right foot, ball-flat. A slight tug on the lady's left hand and arm, as you start to recover, will start her moving forward. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the left, almost on the spot. On the last step of the chassé raise the left hand and arm to signal the lady's right face under arm turn. [Step 6.] Step back on the right foot, ball-flat. The upper body must remain forward to let the lady walk away, under the joined hands and arms, without being pulled backward. [Step 7.] Recover to the left foot, ball-flat. Keep the joined hands and arms raised for the lady to turn under. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Chassé to the right, almost on the spot. As the lady moves forward, the man will position the joined hands and arms for the next figure.

Cha Cha Cha

CH - Fig 10 - 45

Alemana Turn (from Fan Position) (continued)

LADY

Start in Fan Position facing reverse line of dance. [Step 1.] Close the right foot to the left foot, ball-flat. Keep the poise forward. [Step 2.] With a slight tug, the man will start you to take a forward step with the left foot. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé forward. On the last step the man will raise the lead hands and arms to start a right face turn. [Step 6.] Moving the left leg across the right, keep turning to the right. The outside edge of the toe will remain in contact with the floor. When taking weight, on the left foot, finish turning enough so that the left foot will end back. [Step 7.] Step forward on the right foot, ball-flat. Turn to the right while on the toe, before lowering to the heel. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Finish the right face turn on the right foot then chassé forward. The hands and arms will reposition for the next figure.

GENERAL NOTES

Normally we think of the Alemana turn as a two measure figure. The turn portion is the second measure of the figure and can be danced without the first measure if the lady is in the proper position. The figure does not have to begin from the Fan Position. You could start it from open facing. The lady could be lead to do a back brake or to close her feet, as in an alternative basic. You can end the figure with both dancers Chasséing to the side. The man would lead this after step seven. This could be an entry to a Hand to Hand, Spot Turn or New York. If rope spinning is to follow the Alemana, the man could take a small forward step on step ten to help the lady get to his right side. He could also lead her into an aggressive forward chassé with a slight tug on step eight. The man has to lead this figure but he must not try to do it for the lady. If he tries to "stir the pot" to make the lady turn to the right, he can take her off her balance. His left hand and arm are for the lady to use to turn off, so they must be firm. This does not mean that the man pushes on the lady. The lady pushes on the man. The man must keep his body forward on step six. He also reaches forward with the hand and arm. The lady is walking away and using the hand and arm. If they are pulled away from her she will be pulled off balance and unable to complete her figure.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Left Open Position facing lady and WALL. [Step 1.] Moving forward through the body step forward left foot, ball-flat, checking forward movement. Maintain firm lead hand pressure to lead the lady to step back on step 1 and forward on step 2. [Step 2.] Replace the weight back on the right foot, ball-flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] With the left leg moving side and slightly back, dance a compact Left Chassé (almost on the spot). On step 5 raise the lead hand up and to the left palm forward to indicate to the lady to commence her RF turn [Step 6.] Step back on the right foot, checking the movement, ball-flat. Forward body poise should be used in order to allow lady to move away as she continues her right face turn. Take care to maintain lead hand over lady’s right shoulder continuing rotation to the right. [Step 7.] Replace the weight forward onto the left foot, ball-flat. Continue lead with raised left hand. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] With the right leg moving side and slightly forward, dance a

LADY Start in Left Open Facing Position (man’s left and lady’s right hand hold) facing partner and center of the hall. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot, checking the movement, ball-flat. [Step 2.] Replace the weight forward onto the left foot, ball-flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] With the right leg moving forward and slightly side, dance a forward Cha Cha Lock commencing a RF turn on step 5. [Step 6.] Initiate the step by moving the toe of the left foot across the right then take weight to the foot while turning the body right face; ending with the left foot side and slightly back. [Step 7.] Continuing to turn to the right, draw the toe of the right foot under the body and forward to the new stepping position then transfer weight onto the foot, ball-flat. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] With the left leg moving side and slightly forward complete the right face turn to dance a chassé to the left. Lowering the lead hand to end in normal dance position or other position depending upon the figure to follow.

GENERAL NOTES

Use foot, leg, and hip action as described in Introduction Section of Cha Cha Cha.

LADY Steps 3,4 & 5 may be danced as a normal Forward Chassé.

If the Alemana is danced as an entry to a rope spin then lady’s steps 8 - 10 should be danced as a forward Cha Cha Lock to end to man’s right side, the right face spiral would occur on step 10.

GENERAL NOTES The man’s part of the figure turns right face continuously on each step. The lady will dance a left face turn on steps 6 and 12, and all other steps will turn right face also. The figure normally completes up to 2 1/2 turns, around a fixed point on the floor, using 15 steps. A simple and common entry to the Continuous Natural Top is the “Half Basic” (see Fig. 1). On steps 3, 5, and 9 (for the man) the right toe will move toward the left heel, however the tempo generally does not allow time for a complete placement of the right toe to the left heel in the same manner as danced on steps 1, 7, and 11. It is not necessary for the heel of the right foot to fully lower to the floor and should never lower until the left foot begins to move. Use foot, leg and hip Technique as described in the Introduction to Cha Cha Cha.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure can be danced with both hands joined (butterfly). It is important that the body, from the waist up remain facing your partner. The head, however, should turn toward the direction of movement. This figure is not a book figure. Therefore, there is not a written description of it in the manuals used most often by teachers and choreographers. Because of this, there will be many different techniques or descriptions on how to dance this figure. The best rule of thumb on dancing this figure is to minimize the body action on the cross step. This will eliminate a lot of excess swiveling. Because of the speed of the Cha Cha, excess body action will make it difficult to keep up with the rhythm.

GENERAL NOTES

Dance the Cuban Break after any figure that ends in Close or Open Facing Position. This is a very versatile figure and there are many options for its use. The man and the lady do not have to dance the Cuban Break simultaneously. For example, the man could dance a Time Step while the lady danced a Cuban Break in one direction and then the lady could dance a Time Step while the man danced a Cuban Break in the opposite direction. The Cuban Break can be danced with both dancers facing the same direction, in opposition or with the same footwork.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Open Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Place the left foot to the side, ball-flat. The right foot remains in place with partial weight and the heel lightly on the floor. [Step 2.] Recover to the right foot, flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Dance a compact Chassé to the left.

LADY Start in Open Position facing the center of the hall. [Step 1.] Place the right foot to the side, ball-flat. The left foot remains in place with partial weight and the heel lightly on the floor. [Step 2.] Recover to the left foot, flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Dance a compact Chassé to the right.

GENERAL NOTES

Although Cucaracha are sometimes used in the Cha Cha Cha, they are primarily a rumba figure. The dance can take the pressure step in almost any direction, i.e., forward, diagonally forward and side, diagonally bk and side, etc. You can start the Cucaracha with either foot and use any number of repetitions. One dancer can be doing a Cucaracha while the other is dancing some other figure. The Chassé does not have to be compact. The dancer can use any Chassé that will fit the routine.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in Left Open facing Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, ball/flat. leading lady to step back through tension in joined hands. [Step 2.] Recover onto the right foot, ball/flat. [Step 3.] Step back on the left foot [small step], ball/flat, as you raise the joined lead hands leading the lady’s slow left face turn [swivel]. Hold the right hand loosely at the lady’s waist. At the end of her turn lower the joined lead hands in front of the lady slightly above waist level. [Step 4.] Step back on the right foot [small step], ball/flat, with the left hand lead the lady toward LOD. [Step 5.] Recover to the left foot, ball/flat, as assist the lady’s left face turn with a firm lead arm and hand. [Steps 6, 7 & 8.] Compact Side Chassé R/L, R to end in Fan Position facing wall.

LADY Start in Left Open facing Position facing COH. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot, ball/flat. [Step 2.] Recover to the left foot, ball/flat. [Steps 3.] Step forward on the ball of the right foot slowly turning 5/8 left face [slow loose Spiral action]. The left foot will end crossed loosely in front of the right foot [without weight], then settle on the right foot. [Step 4.] Step forward on the left foot, ball/flat. [Step 5.] Step forward on the ball of the right foot then turn sharply to the left as you take full weight, ball-flat, to end facing toward RLOD. Your left leg will be forward after the turn. [Steps 6, 7 & 8.] Chassé backward L/R, L to end in Fan Position with left foot toed out, body facing DRW.

GENERAL NOTES The Curl is a unique form of Spiral. In Rumba it is danced more slowly than the Spiral, taking the full slow beat [two counts] to execute the turn, however, in the Cha Cha the action must be completed slightly faster [one and one-half counts]. Unlike the Spiral, the Curl ends with the left leg loosely crossed in front of the right and slightly extended whereas the Spiral ends with the left leg crossed rather tightly at the ankles. The Curl is generally considered to be the lady’s action. The Curl is normally danced with the turn executed on the lady’s right foot turning left face - rarely on the left foot turning right face. The Curl may also be danced from a Fan as well as a number of other positions. The essential characteristics will remain the same.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot, ball-flat, straightening the knee. As weight is taken lower the left arm to signal the lady to turn. [Step 2.] Recover to the left foot, ball-flat, in place. A slight left turn as you start to recover will cause the lady to turn left face. Straighten the knee as weight is taken and release the right hand from the lady. [Steps 3, 4 & 5] Chassé to the right.

Fan (continued) Cha Cha Cha

CH - Fig 2 - 22

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing center of the hall. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, ball-flat, straightening the knee. [Step 2.] Turn one quarter left face then step side and back on the right foot, ball-flat with a straight knee. [Step 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé backward.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure can also start with both hands joined or right hand to right hand. The man must release his right hand hold and assume a left to right hand hold. If the lady starts the figure from a hip twist her turn on step two will be one half a turn left face. The man can use the hip twist Chassé if he desires.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Open Position facing lady and WALL, man’s right & lady’s left hands joined. [Step 1.] Commence body turn to right and step across the left foot toward RLOD forward left foot, ball-flat, checking forward movement and depressing into left leg. R arm and joined hands extended level and to RLOD, free arm extended up and back. [Step 2.] Replace the weight back on the right foot, ball-flat turning to face lady. Return free arms to normal. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Finish with a Left Chassé, (left/right, left,).

LADY Start in Open Position facing man and center of the hall, lady’s left and man’s right hands joined. [Step 1.] Step across the left foot toward RLOD on right foot, checking the movement, ball-flat and depressing into right leg. Extend free R arm up and back. [Step 2.] Replace the weight back onto the left foot, ball-flat turning to face partner. Return free arms to normal. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Finish with a Right Chassé, (right/left, right).

GENERAL NOTES

This figure has been adapted from Rumba. The Fencing Line may also be danced from Fan (as in the basic Rumba figure) in which case the lead (through man’s left and lady’s right hand hold) turning the lady up to 3/8 to the right (man turning 1/8 to the left) on step one, the remaining steps being taken on the opposite foot from that described above. Use foot, leg, and hip action as described in Introduction Section of Cha Cha Cha.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Open Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Take lady's left hand in your right hand. Bringing right hand and arm to the left between partner and self, turn left face and step back with a straight leg on the left foot, ball-flat. The right foot should remain in place. [Step 2.] Recover onto the right toe and bring the right hand and arm back to the right. This will create a turn to face your partner and the wall. When the turn is complete, lower to the heel with a straight leg. [Step 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the left.

Hand to Hand (continued) Cha Cha Cha

CH - Fig 7 - 34

LADY Start in Open Position facing the center of the hall. [Step 1.] As the man brings the arms through turn right face and step back on the right foot, ball-flat. The left foot should stay in place. [Step 2.] Recover onto the left toe. The man will pull the arms back through to turn you left to face the center of the hall. When the turn is complete, lower to the heel with a straight leg. [Step 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the right.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure can be danced off the opposite foot. Everything would be the exact opposite of the charted figure. Care must be taken by the man not to be over aggressive with his hand and arm movements. He must not jerk or pull the lady off her normal balance. When moving the hands and arms through to begin the figure, he should not push his hand in front of the lady. The hands do not control the figure they only signal the figure.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Fan Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, ball-flat. The right foot remains almost in place. [Step 2.] Recover to the right foot, ball-flat. Tug gently the lady's right hand and arm to help her start forward before step. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the left very compactly so as not to move toward the lady. Raise the left arm without hindering the lady's forward movement. The most often used arm position to end the Chassé with a window made with the man's left and the lady's right arms. [Step 6.] Step back on the right foot, ball-flat. Keep your poise well forward so the lady can walk away without being pulled back. [Step 7.] Recover to the left foot, ball-flat. Keep poise and left arm forward. As lady steps forward help her to turn left face by taking the joined hands over her head. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Chassé forward toward DRW.

LADY Start in Fan Position facing reverse line of dance. [Step 1.] Close the right foot to the left, ball-flat. Poise is forward. The foot is moving backward, however; the body should not move backward. [Step 2.] Step forward with the left foot, ball-flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé forward, the joined hands and arms should be raised to allow you to go under them on your next step. [Step 6.] Turn left and step forward on the left foot, ball-flat, toward DRW. [Step 7.] Step forward on the right foot. As weight is taken on the toe start turning left face to face the man and lower to the heel. The man can help with the left turn by bringing the joined hands over your head but most of the action should be accomplished by yourself. Keeping the poise forward will help. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Chassé backward toward DRW.

Cha Cha Cha

CH - Fig 9 - 41

Hockey Stick (continued)

GENERAL NOTES

The lady can be in front of the man or at his left side at the end of step five. The factor controlling the position will be the shaping of the couple which is personal. Without strong shaping the lady should be in front of the man. Step six for the lady must be taken 1/8 to the left. She should turn then take to step. If she takes the step then turns she will be pulled back by the man or end up continuing along the same line she approached the man. It is called a Hockey Stick because that is the shape the lady traces along the floor. The Chassé that the man uses on steps three, four and five is very compact and does not move toward the lady. He may do a Rondé Chassé or use steps three, four and five of the Open Hip Twist. On steps six and seven the man must keep his poise forward. He is stepping back while the lady is walking forward and they have joined hands and arms. If the man takes his body back with his back step he will pull back on the lady and hinder her forward steps. The man must not "crank" the lady's arm on step seven. If he just takes the joined hands over the lady's head he will be giving her all the help she need to make her left turn. The Hockey Stick can end in Counter Promenade Position (Reverse Semi-Closed) if the man leads the lady to over turn on step seven. They would both then do a Forward Chassé toward reverse line of dance. There would be no change in the direction that the lady takes steps six and seven only the amount of turn on step seven.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure has been adapted from the Rope Spin (Rumba) by excluding the preceding Spiral action and only dancing the circle walk action of the Rope Spin. The Lariat may be transformed into a Rope Spin by changing the lady’s last step of the preceding figure [left foot] into a Spiral. This is accomplished by the Man releasing the hold with his right hand, swaying to right (lowering right shoulder) while raising the lead hand to lead the lady to Spiral to her right (turn strongly to right on the ball of her left foot) ending with lady to mans right side. Both the Lariat and the Rope Spin dance well following any figure in which the lady is turning right face, such as the Natural Top or the Alemana. Use foot, leg, and hip action as described in Introduction Section of Cha Cha Cha.

GENERAL NOTES The figure turns right face continuously on each step and normally completes up to 2 1/2 turns, around a fixed point on the floor, using 15 steps. A simple and common entry to the Natural Top is the “Half Basic” (see Fig. Often only steps 11 through 15 are danced. This truncated or short form of the figure is cued “Natural Top” to distinguish it from the full 15 step figure.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Open Position facing partner and the wall. [Step 1.] Turning sharply to the right to face reverse line of dance, step forward on the left foot, ball flat, checking your forward movement. This step should not be long or aggressive as you are checking the movement. The lady is lead to turn to face reverse line of dance with the left hand and arm. Take care not to over lead the lady or to invade her space with your arm. [Step 2.] Recover back onto the right foot, ball flat, beginning to turn to the left to face your partner. The turn will be lead with the left hand and arm and be completed over the next three steps. [Step 3.] Step side on the left foot, ball flat, continuing to turn to face your partner. [Step 4.] Close the right foot to the left foot on the ball of the foot. [Step 5.] Step side on the left foot, ball flat, facing your partner. The left hand will have assumed whatever hold is necessary for the next figure.

LADY Start in Open Position facing partner and COH. [Step 1.] Turning sharply to the left to face reverse line of dance, step forward on the right foot, ball flat, checking your forward movement. This step should not be long or aggressive as you are checking the movement. The man will lead a turn to face reverse line of dance with his left hand and arm. [Step 2.] Recover back onto the left foot, ball flat, beginning to turn to the right to face your partner. The turn will be lead with the man's left hand and arm and be completed over the next three steps. [Step 3.] Step side on the right foot, ball flat, continuing to turn to face your partner. [Step 4.] Close the left foot to the right foot on the ball of the foot. [Step 5] Step side on the right foot, ball flat, facing your partner.

GENERAL NOTES When dancing the New York the length of the first step (checked forward walk) should be controlled such that the step will be taken ball flat. The body should remain slightly behind the center of the foot to "check" the forward motion. The lead hand should be slightly above waist level, half extended, with forearm parallel to the floor. The free arm can be extended outward in line with the shoulder as the step is taken. A swiveling action will occur on the standing foot immediately preceding the first step. As the recovery step (step 2) is taken the body will commence the turn to a facing position and the lead will be felt through the lead hands. If the first step of the following figure is to be danced facing the partner then the arms will be retracted as the chassé is danced. They should be held below shoulder level and forward of the shoulder line. This is to show a "closed" or facing movement follows. If the following figure is to be danced into a turn then this is normally suggested by an open and slightly higher arm line (as in butterfly). The lead will follow through to show the direction of the next step. The New York is frequently followed by a second New York danced in the opposite direction and with opposite footwork. In this case the footwork would be as follows: Man – The first step is forward and across with the right foot to face LOD and continue to dance the lady’s steps as defined above. Lady – The first step is forward and across with the left foot to face LOD and continue to dance the man’s steps as defined above.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in Open Position facing lady and COH. The figure is normally performed without hand hold in which case the lead is indicated by shoulder positions only. (see General Notes). [Step 1.] Moving forward through the body step forward left foot with L shoulder leading, toeing out, ball/flat, checking forward movement. When taking full weight, straighten the leg and allow the hips to move to the left. The right foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel, leg straight. [Step 2.] Replace the weight back onto the right foot, ball/flat, returning shoulders to neutral. When taking weight, the leg should straighten and the hips should move to the right. The left foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel, leg straight. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] With the left leg moving back and L shoulder leading, accomplish a back Cha Cha Lock LRL (chassé lock). [Step 6.] Toeing out, step back on the right foot with R shoulder leading, checking the movement, ball/flat. The leg will straighten and the hips will move to the right. The left foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel, leg straight. [Step 7.] Replace the weight forward onto the left foot, ball/flat, returning shoulders to neutral. When taking weight, the leg should straighten and the hips should move to the left. The right foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel, leg straight. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] With the right leg moving forward and R shoulder leading, accomplish a forward Cha Cha Lock RLR (chassé lock).

LADY Start in Open Position facing man and WALL. The figure is normally performed without hand hold in which case the lead is indicated by shoulder positions only. (see General Notes). [Step 1.] Toeing out, step back on the right foot with R shoulder leading, checking the movement, ball/flat. The leg will straighten and the hips will move to the right. The left foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel, leg straight. [Step 2.] Replace the weight forward onto the left foot, ball/flat, returning the shoulders to neutral. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] With the right leg moving forward and R shoulder leading, accomplish a forward Cha Cha Lock RLR (Chassé Lock). [Step 6.] Moving forward through the body step forward left foot with L shoulder leading, toeing out, ball/flat, checking forward movement. When taking full weight, straighten the leg and allow the hips to move to the left. The right foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel, leg straight. [Step 7.] Replace the weight back onto the right foot, ball/flat, returning the shoulders to neutral. When taking weight, the leg should straighten and the hips should move to the right. The left foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel, leg straight. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] With the left leg moving back, accomplish a back Cha Cha Lock LRL (Chassé Lock).

GENERAL NOTES

This figure is danced in a nearly straight line forward and back. Alignment of the figure may be to the wall, to line of dance or any other alignment as suitable to the routine. As an alternative the figure may be danced from Left Open Facing with elbows retracted and hands held slightly above waist level, in which case the lead may be accomplished thru tension in joined M's L hand and W's R hand however care should be taken to perform the proper shoulder leads regardless. The figure should be described as an Open Full Basic. Either half of the figure may be danced independently in which case the first half would be described as an Open Fwd Basic and the second half would be described as an Open Back Basic.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION MAN

Start in Open Position facing the wall with lead hands joined. [Step 1.] With a

slight push with the left hand to signal the lady to step back, step back on the left

foot, ball-flat, straightening the knee. Retain the left to right hand hold. The right

foot should not move towards the left. [Step 2.] Recover to the right foot, ball-flat,

and with a straight leg. A gentle tug on the lady's right hand will signal her to

recover. [Step 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the left.

LADY

Start in Open Position facing the center of the hall with lead hands joined. [Step 1.]

When the man signals with a slight push on the hand, step back on the right foot,

ball-flat, and with a straight leg. The left foot should not move toward the right.

[Step 2.] When the man tugs, recover to the left foot, ball-flat, with a straight leg.

[Step 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the right.

GENERAL NOTES

As both dancers are stepping back from each other on step one, it must be kept

small. This will keep the distance between them reasonable for comfortable dancing.

As an option the man can lower on his right leg on step one and recover upright on

step two as the lady does her normal back and recover. They would both then do the

Chassé.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Open Facing Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, ball/flat, checking the forward motion. Lead the lady to step back with a solid left arm through the body. Do not push the lady backward with the arm alone. [Step 2.] Recover back onto the right foot that remains almost in place, ball/flat. [Step 3.] Begin the modified backward chassé by stepping back on the left toe. [Step 4.] Slip the right foot backward, a small amount, on the flat of the foot. [Step 5.] Close the left foot to the right with the left toe at the right instep, ball/flat. The left arm should be bent so that the elbow is near the hip. The arm must be held firm so that the lady can use it for an aid in her hip twist. [Step 6.] Step back on the right foot, ball/flat. Do not pull the lady with you as she is moving to your left. [Step 7.] Recover onto the left, in place, ball/flat. Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Chassé, to the right. On the last step, turn slightly to the left to shape to the lady.

LADY Start in Open Facing Position facing COH. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot, ball/flat. [Step 2.] Recover onto the left foot, in place, ball/flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé forward, on the right foot. After taking weight on the third step of the chassé, using the man's left arm, turn sharply to the right (hip twist). [Step 6.] Step forward on the left foot, turning very slightly to the left, ball/flat. [Step 7.] Step forward on the right foot

then turn sharply to the left as you take full weight so that you end facing RLOD with your left leg in front of your right, ball then flat after the turn. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Chassé backward, with the left foot. Shape slightly to the left, on the last step.

GENERAL NOTES The figure is written as the book figure is described. It ends in the Fan Position. There are other options that can be made in the second half the figure at the discretion of the choreographers. The man may substitute a Rondé Chassé for step 3, 4 and 5. The man must not try to force the lady's Hip Twist or try to control her direction on step 6.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start facing the wall in Closed Dance Position. [Step 1.] As step forward L, ball/flat, lower and extend lead hands rotating upper body to the right leading the lady to turn RF. Relax right side hold to allow freedom of movement for the lady. [Step 2.] Return weight onto the right foot, ball/flat, start return of body to neutral while retracting right side hold assisting the lady to commence a LF turn. The left foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Continue with compact Chassé To The Left (cl/cl, sd) placing left arm at lady's right shoulder blade. [Step 6.] Step side on the right foot, ball/flat (pressure step) turning the upper body to the left. Release the right side hold and relax the left side hold allowing the lady to turn LF. The left foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel. [Step 7] Retract the left side hold, leading the lady to commence a RF turn, as replace the weight onto the left foot, ball/flat. The right foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Continue with compact Chassé To The Right (cl/cl, sd) to end in normal Closed Position.

Opening Out (to Right and Left)

LADY Start facing center of the hall in Closed Position. [Step 1.] Swivel RF on the left foot to step back R, ball/flat turning up to 1/2 RF. Release the heel of the left foot. The upper body will normally turn more in order to accentuate the appearance of a full opening position. [Step 2.] Commence return to facing position as return weight to the left foot, ball/flat. The right foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Complete the left face turn to face partner as dance a chassé R/L, R. As the chassé is being danced place the right hand on the backside of the man's shoulder. [Step 6.] Swivel LF on the right foot to step back L turning up to 1/2 LF. The right foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel. [Step 7.] Commence return to facing position as return weight to the right foot, ball/flat. The left foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Complete the right face turn to face partner as dance a chassé L/R, L to end in normal Closed Position.

GENERAL NOTES There are two forms of the Opening Out to the Right as described following: Advanced Opening Out (as described) - this form of the Opening Out is the same as that used in the Closed Hip Twist. Natural Opening Out - in which case the man dances a Cucaracha to the left.

If only the first measure (Opening Out to the Right) is to be danced then the couple will normally return to Closed Dance Position as the chassé to the left is executed. In this case the "Lead/Technique" for steps 3 through 5 would be to return to normal Closed Dance Position. The Opening Out to the Left may be danced retaining "normal hold" by dancing the lady to a Counter Promenade Position (Reverse Semi-closed) on step 6. In this case, due to the fact that the man has retained a right side hold, the lady's turn will normally be restricted to 3/8 turn or less. The "Cuddle" is an adaptation of the Opening Out figure. The essential difference is the arm work in that the couple will wrap their arms around each other during the Chassé (lady's arms to man's shoulders, man's arms beneath the lady's, hands at the lady's shoulder blades). Use foot, leg, and hip action as described in Introduction Section of Cha Cha Cha.

GENERAL NOTES

The Split Cuban Breaks as written here is similar to a Double New York. There are other techniques used in dancing this figure, e.g., using no turn with the first and fourth steps taken as crossing steps. If the partners were facing each other with the same free foot, they can dance the steps in opposition. The speed of the dance requires that all steps be small.

Chassé to the Right

Spot Turn (continued) Cha Cha Cha

CH - Fig 4 - 28

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in Open Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Cross the left leg over the right starting to turn right face. Step forward onto the left foot, ball-flat, turning right face to finish a 1/4 turn to the right. The right foot should remain almost in place. [Step 2.] Turning strongly right face, 1/2 a turn, recover back onto the right foot, ball-flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Turn right face 1/4 turn on the right foot and do a Chassé to the left.

LADY Start in Open Position facing center of the hall. [Step .1] Cross the right leg over the left starting to turn left face. Step forward onto the right foot, ball-flat, turning left face to finish a 1/4 turn to the left. The left foot should remain almost in place. [Step 2.] Turning strongly left face, 1/2 a turn, recover back onto the left foot, ball-flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Turn left face 1/4 turn on the left foot and do a Chassé to the right.

GENERAL NOTES

The Spot Turn can be danced starting with the man's right foot and the lady's left. If so, the man would be dancing the lady's chart and the lady the man's. Step one could be danced with 1/2 a turn. This would have the dancers facing for step three so no turn would be necessary to begin the Chassé. To accomplish this the dancer would turn about 1/8 while moving the leg and 3/8 as weight is taken. If the dancers are standing on the same foot they could both do a Spot Turn in the same direction. The dancers could be facing, be in shadow or be standing one in front of the other and still do a spot turn, with same footwork or opposite footwork. Another variation on the Spot Turn is an Underarm Turn. The lady would do the Spot Turn and the man would check with his lead foot and not turn, just recovering back to do the Chassé with the lady. Usually the man will retain hand contact with the trailing hand, therefore, the lady would be turning under the arms. The hand contact is not necessary, however.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in Fan Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] Check forward on the left foot, ball-flat, extending lead hands slightly to cause the lady to close her feet. [Step 2.] Recover to the right foot, ball-flat, as retract lead hands to lead lady to step forward. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the left very compactly so as not to move toward the lady. Raise the left arm without hindering the lady's forward movement. As the lady passes from your left to right side lead her to turn left face under joined hands as you place your right hand on her left shoulder blade to check her motion on step 6. [Step 6.] Lower joined hands as check forward right and slightly across the left foot, ball-flat, shape upper body toward lady. [Step 7.] Recover to the left foot, ball-flat. As lead lady to step forward. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Chassé to the right R/L, R as raise the left arm to lead the lady’s right face turn under joined hands returning to Fan Position.

LADY

Start in Fan Position facing reverse line of dance. [Step 1.] Close the right foot to the left, ball-flat. Retain forward poise. [Step 2.] Step forward with the left foot, ball-flat. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé forward R/L, R, the joined hands and arms should be raised to allow you to turn under them on step 5 spiraling 3/8 left face. [Step 6.] Check back on the left foot, ball-flat. [Step 7.] Recover to the right foot. [Steps 8, 9 & 10.] Chassé forward toward LOD L/R, L spiral 3/8 right face under joined hands on step 10, to end with left foot back in Fan Position.

GENERAL NOTES

A standard Hockey Stick (Fig. 9) generally follows this figure.

There are a number of variations to the Stop & Go Hockey Stick. Two common variations are danced without the underarm turn; the double hand Stop & Go action in which the lady dances forward on steps 1 – 5, is checked on step 6 with a double hand hold, and returns to her original position (backing) on steps 7 – 10. And the Tummy Check Stop & Go action in which the lady dances forward on steps 1 – 5, is checked on step 6 with man’s right arm across her waist (man behind the lady on step 6), and returns to her original position (backing) on steps 7 – 10. Cue sheets should be read carefully to determine the form of Stop & Go Hockey Stick that applies to a particular dance.

Use foot, leg and hip Technique as described in the Introduction to Cha Cha Cha.

As take full weight, straighten the leg and allow the hips to move to the right. The left foot will remain in place, leg straight. [Step 2.] Replace the weight onto the left foot, ball/flat, returning shoulders to neutral. As take full weight, straighten the leg and allow the hips to move to the left. The right foot will remain in place with pressure released from the heel, leg straight. leg straight. [Steps 3, 4 & 5.] With the left leg moving backward and L shoulder leading, accomplish a backward Cha Cha Lock LRL (Chassé Lock). [Steps 6, 7 & 8.] With the right leg moving backward and R shoulder leading, accomplish a backward Cha Cha Lock RLR (Chassé Lock). [Steps 9, 10 & 11.] With the left leg moving backward and L shoulder leading, accomplish a backward Cha Cha Lock LRL (Chassé Lock).

GENERAL NOTES

Steps 1 and 2 are technically not part of the Three Cha Cha Chas figure. However, including these steps assists in the easy entry to practicing the figure as well as in choreography since it allows for the figure to be repeated in the opposite direction by merely exchanging man’s and lady’s parts (see Three Cha Cha Chas - Backward as discussed below). This figure is generally danced in a straight line (no turn) or gradually curving up to 3/8 to the left across steps 3 through 11. Alignment of the figure may be to the wall (as described), or any other alignment as suitable to the routine. The figure may be danced with hand changes on each of the Cha Cha Locks in which case the first hand change will be on step 3 using R-R hands, on step 6 using L-L hands, and on step 9 using R-R hands. Generally, if the hand changes are used, the hold will be palm to palm. The figure may also be danced in Closed (Close) facing position, in right side-by-side (Open Position), or in left side-by-side (Left Open Position). In either of the side-by-side positions the figure may be danced with no turn or with turn on each of the Cha Cha Locks, 1/8 to left, 1/8 to right, and 1/8 to left (lady opposite). The figure may be danced in facing position without hand hold with the lead indicated by shoulder positions only. Three Cha Cha Chas - Backward - The figure may be danced backward in which case the man and lady interchange footwork from that described in the charts and Narrative Description (man dancing lady’s part and lady dancing the man’s part). Other than the fact that the facing alignments (the man would continue to face the wall, lady COH) no other changes in the description are necessary unless the figure is danced with hand changes. If hand changes are used then R-R hands should be retained from step 11 of the Forward Three Chas through steps 1 and 2 of the Backward Three Chas, changing to L-L hands on step 3, to R-R hands on step 6, and L-L hands on step 10. Use foot, leg and hip Technique as described in the Introduction.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Open Position facing the wall. [Step 1.] With no turn, cross the left foot behind the right, ball-flat. Any hand hold can be maintained or all hands can be released. The right foot should remain almost in place. [Step 2.] Recover to the right foot, ball-flat, in place. [Step 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the left.

Time Step (continued) Cha Cha Cha

CH - Fig 5 - 30

LADY Start in Open Position facing the center of the hall. [Step 1.] With no turn, cross the right foot behind the left, ball-flat. Any hand hold can be maintained or all hands can be released. The left foot should remain almost in place. [Step 2.] Recover to the left foot, ball-flat, in place. [Step 3, 4 & 5.] Chassé to the right.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure can be danced any time the dancers are facing each other or facing the same direction. They could be in Closed Position, Open Position, left or right shadow or one standing in front of the other facing the same direction. If in Open Position they could be in Butterfly or with any combination of hand holds. They could even be standing on the same foot, i.e., both right or left feet. The time step can be started on either foot. This is a very versatile figure and usually used as a filler in choreography. There is no difference between the man's action and the lady's. It is only whether the dancer moves left or right.
