INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this seminar is to meet the need for delving deeper into health planning matters felt within the academic circles, as well as the political and technical realms. Furthermore, we intend to analyse and compare health planning experiences in different political, economic, and social contexts.This issue has followed many paths in different continents and countries; in some cases it has even been influenced by important documents published by international organisations, parti-cularly the World Health Organisation.In Portugal, the documents ‘Saúde, um Compromisso’ (Health, a Commitment), published in the late 1990s, and the 2004-2010 and 2011-2016 National Health Plans were vital, yet they were not clearly integrated into health policies and as such they were not given due continuity. There is evidence of highly relevant planning experiences in the health sector in all Portuguese--speaking countries and during this seminar these shall be compared to others in Germany, Canada, Spain, and the United Kingdom.The seminar intends to achieve three essential goals based on these experiences:

• taking a deeper look at the doctrine aspects of this matter;• knowing and analysing particular achievements in this area; and• discussing future health planning developments.
