Trinseo is a key player in resins for a wide variety of markets, and our products set the standards globally in different applications. Having raised the bar for performance in refrigerator liners with our STYRON A-TECH™ 1175 Polystyrene Resin, we continue to advance the industry, already introducing the next generation as other resin suppliers still work to match this industry leader.

Once again, Trinseo’s development efforts will set new performance standards with our STYRON X-TECH™ Polystyrene Resin platform. This new platform is based on proprietary technology and suitable for various applications in the home appliances, packaging and building and construction markets, with its first release supporting freezers and refrigerators.

Introduction

STYRON X-TECH™

STYRON X-TECH™ 2175 Polystyrene Resin

Marking the launch of its platform, STYRON X-TECH™ 2175 answers the large appliance market’s increasing need for material cost control and is designed to enable better performing refrigerator and freezer liners produced with less material. This new ESCR HIPS resin was developed with Trinseo’s proprietary technology and builds on the benefits from industry-leader STYRON A-TECH™ 1175 to offer all the performance enhancements of its predecessor with up to 10% cost savings.

Performance Enhancements

STYRON X-TECH™ 2175 offers a unique combination of high stiffness and very high melt strength. This combination is possible thanks to Trinseo’s patent-pending technology, which allows manufacturers to reduce the thickness yet enhance the thermoformability of the flat sheet and therefore streamlining production and enhancing the performance characteristics in the end-application:

• Advanced down-gauging: Up to 10% material savings: Reduction of the amount of raw materials needed to produce refrigerator and freezer liners by up to 10% – resulting in substantial cost savings for OEMs.

• Improved rigidity and ESCR: Advanced level of stiffness and chemical resistance to food stuff result in a higher level of ESCR and strength than other polystyrene resins on the market.

A Unique Combination for Unmatched Benefits

STYRON X-TECH™ 2175 Polystyrene Resin Patent Application Publications: US20153076394A1 (US : Dec 2015), EP2961781A1 (Europe : Jan 2015)Publications also in China, Korea, Japan.

Focused on Meeting your Needs. STYRON X-TECH™ 2175 Polystyrene Resin was designed to enable thinner door and body linings in refrigerators and freezers. In addition to these materials, Trinseo offers a full portfolio of Polystyrene Resins for large appliance applications. This chart shows the thickness distribution of Trinseo in house double compartment inner liners, thermoformed from 3.4 mm thick extruded sheet of STYRON A-TECH™ 1175 and X-TECH™ 2175. Positions 10 to 13 are located at the side walls of the inner liner, where the draw ratio is highest, hence the thickness is lowest, and positions 4 and 7 are located at the back wall, where the draw ratio is lowest, hence the thickness is highest. The graphs show that the thickness differences between back and side walls are smaller STYRON X-TECH™ 2175, leading to a more homogeneous thickness distribution. This attribute for STYRON X-TECH™ 2175 versus STYRON A-TECH™ 1175 is thanks to its higher melt strength and allows for down gauging.

Looking again at liner position, the chart to the right shows the rigidity or stiffness of the liner expressed as Young’s modulus. The test results show that STYRON X-TECH™ 2175 is more rigid and stiff on all liner positions than STYRON A-TECH™ 1175, an average of 17% better performance than its predecessor. This higher liner stiffness allows for down gauging.

In addition, STYRON X-TECH™ 2175 has a higher resistance to aggressive food stuff substances than STYRON A-TECH™ 1175. As seen in the chart to the right, the new ESCR HIPS resin shows a higher strength before substances are applied (20% above STYRON A-TECH™ 1175) as well as over time, resulting in a 25% higher strength over STYRON A-TECH™ 1175 after 300 hours of exposure to the aggressive substance.
