The Jasper Stone StoryThe Jasper Stone StoryThe Jasper Stone Story

  • Pink Sioux Quartzite was originally loose sand covering an ancient sea floor over 1.7 billion years ago. Hardened by heat and pressure, it be-came one of the worlds most beautiful and durable stones. For centuries, Quartzite has been known as the master healer. It was used for bestowing energy and the ability to balance the spiritual, physical and emotional planes. Although many of those beliefs of the past still remain strong, today Quartzite is primarily known for its strength and beauty. Sioux Quartzite is nearly as hard as a diamond, known for being able to cut glass. The quartzite found in the Sioux Falls area is typically a dusty rose or mauve color but can vary in color from a light pink to a deep purple depending on the quarrys depth and location.

Most importantly, remember this is a natural stone. For those who truly appreciate the uniqueness and craftsmanship of a natural product, it simply does not compare to other stone or man-made products. Sioux Quartzite is environmentally friendly, easy to maintain, and adaptable to any style and budget. No two stones are ever identical. Adding to the natural beauty and uniqueness of Sioux Quartzite are the perfectly formed white circles known as moons that occasionally appear in the stone. It is believed these white colored spots in the stone represent where the spirits have touched the stone and left their mark, thus each piece has natures own fingerprints.

  • Jasper Stone Company is proud to be the supplier of a natural product that qualifies for credits toward LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. As we all try to do our part to protect the environment, Jasper Stone is a great addition to your next project. There are a variety of ways that stone can currently contribute to LEED points. SS Credit 7.1: Heat Island Effect, Non-Roof: Using light-colored natural stone with a solar reflectance index of 29 or greater can reduce heat-island effects EA Credit 1: Optimize Energy Performance: Natural Stone has good thermal mass, which positively impacts indoor ambient air temperature and thus, energy efficiency. MR Credits 1.1 & 1.2: Building Reuse, Maintain 75% to 95% of Existing Walls, Floors, and Roof: These credits apply if the lifecycle of the existing building stock can be main-tained in a project. MR Credits 2.1 & 2.2: Construction Waste Management, Divert 50% to 75% from Disposal: These credits apply if waste stone used in construction is diverted to a bene-ficial use, rather than being disposed. MR Credits 3.1 & 3.2: Materials Reuse, 5% to 10%: These credits apply if salvaged stone products can be reused for another pur-pose in building design. MR Credits 5.1 & 5.2: Regional Materials, 10% to 20% Extracted, Proc-essed & Manufactured: These credits apply if the project uses natural stone that has been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the pro-ject site for a minimum of 10% (based on cost) of the total materials value (if only a fraction of a product or material is extracted/harvested/recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage, by weight, contributes to the regional value).

  • In anticipation of the development and release of future versions of LEED 2009, a revised point system based on the application of life-cycle assess-ment to support LEED credits, the NSC relies on the data collected through the benchmarking survey. The resulting life-cycle inventory data sets have been made publicly avail-able on the NSC website to make transparent the extent and affect of stone industry operations and to support an informed decision regarding stone products. Beyond LEED, the green building movement has inspired numerous other green building certifications and programs in the United States and abroad. Some of these programs, such as The Living Building Challenge, seeks to inspire builders, owners, architects, engineers and design professionals to build environmentally sound and self sustaining buildings; buildings that actually give back to the ecosystem in which they are built. Developed in 2005 by the Cascadia Region Green Building Council, The Living Building Challenge promotes no credits, only prerequisites, meaning buildings must meet requirements such as generating all or its own energy with renewable resources, capturing and treating all of its water on site, and using resources efficiently and for maximum beauty. The program is com-prised of six performance areas, or petals, including site, energy, water, materials, indoor quality, and beauty and inspiration. Each petal includes prerequisites that must be met in order to achieve that specific performance are designation.
