“Isn't it odd how much fatter a book gets when you've read it several times?" Mo had said..."As if something were left between the pages every time you read it. Feelings, thoughts, sounds, smells...and then, when you look at the book again many years later, you find yourself there, too, a slightly younger self, slightly different, as if the book had preserved you like a pressed flower...both strange and familiar.” ― Cornelia Funke, Inkspell

Earth orbits the sun, we dip in and out of the current sheet. Transitions from one side to another can stir up stormy space weather around our planet.

Cosmic rays are also affected. These are high-energy particles accelerated to nearly light speed by supernova explosions and other violent events in the galaxy. Cosmic rays are a danger to astronauts

and space probes, and some researchers say they might affect the cloudiness and climate of Earth. The current sheet acts as a barrier to cosmic rays, deflecting them as they attempt to penetrate the inner solar system. A wavy, crinkly sheet acts as a better shield against these energetic particles from deep space.

As the field reversal approaches, data from Wilcox show that the sun's two hemispheres are out of synch. "The sun's north pole has already changed sign, while the south pole is racing to catch up," says Scherrer. "Soon, however, both poles will be reversed, and the second half of Solar Max will be underway."

When that happens, Hoeksema and Scherrer will share the news with their colleagues and the public.

If you would like to learn more about our star, the sun, check out these items from the library:

The Sun's Magnetic Field is about to Flip From Science@NASA Something big is about to happen on the sun. According to measurements from NASA-supported observatories, the sun's vast magnetic field is about to flip.

"It looks like we're no more than 3 to 4 months away from a complete field reversal," says solar physicist Todd Hoeksema of Stanford University. "This change will have ripple effects throughout the solar system."

The sun's magnetic field changes polarity approximately every 11 years. It happens at the peak of each solar cycle as the sun's inner magnetic dynamo re-organizes itself. The coming reversal will mark the midpoint of Solar Cycle 24. Half of 'Solar Max' will be behind us, with half yet to come.

Hoeksema is the director of Stanford's Wilcox Solar Observatory, one of the few observatories in the world that monitor the sun's polar magnetic fields. The poles are a herald of change. Just as Earth scientists watch our planet's polar regions for signs of climate change, solar physicists do the same thing for the sun. Magnetograms at Wilcox have been tracking the sun's polar magnetism since 1976, and they have recorded three grand reversals—with a fourth in the offing.

Solar physicist Phil Scherrer, also at Stanford, describes what happens: "The sun's polar magnetic fields weaken, go to zero, and then emerge again with the

opposite polarity. This is a regular part of the solar cycle."

A reversal of the sun's magnetic field is, literally, a big event. The domain of the sun's magnetic influence (also known as the "heliosphere") extends billions of kilometers beyond Pluto. Changes to the field's polarity ripple all the way out to the Voyager probes, on the doorstep of interstellar space.

When solar physicists talk about solar field reversals, their conversation often centers on the "current sheet." The current sheet is

a sprawling surface jutting outward from the sun's equator where the sun's slowly-rotating magnetic field induces an electrical current. The current itself is small, only one ten-billionth of an amp

per square meter (0.0000000001 amps/m2), but there’s a lot of it: the amperage flows through a region 10,000 km thick and billions of kilometers wide. Electrically speaking, the entire heliosphere is organized around this enormous sheet.

During field reversals, the current sheet becomes very wavy. Scherrer likens the undulations to the seams on a baseball. As

"The sun's north pole has already changed sign, while the south pole is racing to catch up," says Scherrer. "Soon, however, both poles will be reversed, and the second half of Solar Max will be underway."

REAL FACT #183: The Capitol building in Washington, D.C. has 365 steps to represent every day of the year.

Welcome, welcome, welcome! The time has come to select a few courageous young men and women for the honor of representing their Districts in the 75th annual Hunger Games! Before we begin, we have two very special programs for you brought to you all the way from the Capitol, Ascension Parish Library.

First, we have two training sessions at the Capitol for all of our tributes. It’s going to be a big, big, big day for everyone! After everyone is divided by District, we’ll prepare our tributes for their debut! We’ll also brush up on a few survival skills to help our tributes succeed in the Arena. Training sessions will be held at 5:30 PM on Thursday, September 12, at the Dutchtown location and Tuesday, September 24, at the Donaldsonville location.

Second, the Gamemakers can’t wait to see which District will be victorious in the arena this year. We will have two different Arenas. What fun! Our tributes will craft miniature bows and arrows, participate in a Cornucopia Challenge, and play a game of Sardines. Arena challenges will held at 5:30 PM on Thursday, September 19, at the Gonzales location and Thursday, September 26, at the Galvez location.

Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!

This program is free and open to the public and limited to teens in 6th grade and above. Registration is not required. Teens do not have to attend both sessions to participate. Why is it very common to have a 9 minute snooze interval on alarm clocks, why not 10 instead?

Look for the answer in next month’s Teen Newsletter!

Ukiyo-e, the best known type of Japanese woodblock art print, literally means “pictures of the floating world.” On Wednesday, September 4 at 4 PM in Gonzales, learn more about this style of printmaking and design your own print! As if that’s not enough, we’re also discussing cosplay and sharing pictures from Mechacon. Did you go? Feel free to bring photos and share your stories.

Kokusaika is Japanese for “internationalization,” and that’s what this club is all about! If you’re interested in learning about the culture and history of Japan. . . if you like playing Gomoku, folding origami, discussing Anime and Manga, or writing haiku, this club is for you! This program is open to all teens ages 12 through 18. Cosplay optional. For more information, please contact the Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales at 647-3955.

Whether you’re a fan of Lauren Oliver, Scott Westerfeld, Suzanne Collins, James Patterson, or one of the other zillion authors in the world … if you like to read, and if you like to talk about the books that you read, then you should check out Ascension Parish Library’s Teen Book Club. You’re not required to read a specific title; just come and discuss the book that’s sitting on the floor by your bed. There’s a good chance that someone else in the club has read it and wants to talk about it too.

The Teen Book Club is held on the third Thursday of every month. Our next monthly meeting is on Thursday, September 19 at 5:30 PM in Galvez. This program is open to all teens 6th grade and above.

Registration is not required. For further information, call the Ascension Parish Library in Galvez at 622-3339.

Did you know that books are being challenged or banned from schools, libraries, and bookstores even today? Join the Ascension Parish Library in celebrating the freedom to read by participating in Banned Books Week. Throughout the month of September, Ascension Parish Library is showcasing its collection of previously banned and challenged books, examples of which include Alice in Wonderland, The Golden Compass, and the entire Harry Potter series.

Do you have a favorite banned book? Stop by any library location to take a mug shot with your book and earn a Banned Book Week button. Do the research, make a difference, and support your favorite challenged or banned books in the best way possible - by reading them!

answer to last month’s brain teaser: LET THERE BE LIGHT

Turn one light switch on, wait a few minutes, then turn it off and turn another light switch on. Go into the room and feel the light bulbs. The one that's still warm is connected to the switch that you first turned on, the one that is on was the second switch you turned on, and the last bulb is controlled by the switch that you didn't touch.

Bri tann ica web-based e-book service

Students in elementary school through college can easily access hundreds of high-quality books on the subjects they’re studying through a new Web-based e-books service, Britannica Digital Learning, available to Ascension Parish Library patrons.

This new service makes it easier than ever to use Britannica’s expert-written single-volume titles for research, papers, homework, and projects. More than 300 non-fiction digital books are now available. They cover the full range of curriculum, including math, science, language arts, social studies, and health.

Each e-book contains the entire text of the print edition and illustrations – many of which are striking, high-definition and full-color. Tables of contents, indexes and glossaries are hyperlinked and fully searchable.

These e-books can be accessed 24/7 by students, teachers, and library patrons through any Web connection. All titles in the library’s holdings can be searched with a single keyword. Password-protected notes can be saved and the material can be printed.

A pioneer in electronic publishing since the early 1980s, Britannica, known historically for reference works, today serves a wider range of educational aims than ever, particularly those of teachers and students in the classroom.

But as the candidates begin turning up murdered, the chase becomes an all-too-public spectacle, with every indicator suggesting that the plot has its roots in a shadowy American cabal founded in the 1700s.

With the United States on the verge of collapse, Harvath must untangle a web of conspiracy centuries in the making and head off the greatest threat America has ever seen.

The Real North Korea : Life and Politics in the Failed Stalinist Utopia by Lanʹkov, A. N., 951.9304 LAN

In The Real North Korea, Lankov substitutes cold, clear analysis for the overheated rhetoric surrounding this opaque police state. After providing an accessible history of the nation, he turns his focus to what North Korea is, what its leadership thinks, and how its people cope with living in such an oppressive and poor

place. He argues that North Korea is not irrational, and nothing shows this better than its continuing survival against all odds. A living political fossil, it clings to existence in the face of limited resources and a zombie economy, manipulating great powers despite its weakness. Its leaders are not ideological zealots or madmen, but perhaps the best practitioners of Machiavellian politics that can be found in the modern world. Even though they preside over a failed state, they have successfully used diplomacy-including nuclear threats-to extract support from other nations. But while the people in charge have been ruthless and successful in holding on to power, Lankov goes on to argue that this cannot continue forever, since the old system is slowly falling apart. In the long run, with or without reform, the regime is unsustainable. Lankov contends that reforms, if attempted, will trigger a dramatic implosion of the regime. They will not prolong its existence.
