Teresa
Janevic
Associate
Professor
PhD, MPH Icahn School of
Medicine at
Mount Sinai
Dr. Teresa Janevic, MPH PhD is a
perinatal epidemiologist with a focus
in health equity and social
determinants of population health. Dr.
Janevic is Associate Director of the
Blavatnik Family Women’s Health
Research Institute, in the Departments
of Population Health Science and
Policy, and Obstetrics, Gynecology
and Reproductive Science, at Icahn
School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
She obtained her MPH in
Epidemiology and Biostatistics from
University of California, Berkeley, and
PhD in Epidemiology from Columbia
University. Dr. Janevic’s research
examines why social exposures such
as neighborhood context, racial
discrimination, immigration, and stress
influence perinatal and reproductive
health outcomes, and the role of
quality of health care in these
relationships. She uses a mixed
methods approach – large
administrative data provide a “real-
world” population health perspective,
while community-based qualitative
work gives voice to vulnerable women
and stimulates novel research
hypotheses. Her current research
portfolio includes projects on: (1) the
role of hospital quality in social
determinants of maternal and neonatal
morbidity, (2) health care
discrimination and maternal health, (3)
disparities in long-term health after
gestational diabetes, (4) the influence
of health care policy on immigrant
maternal health, and (5) birth equity
and long-term cardiometabolic health.
Her wide ranging skills in qualitative
and quantitative research methods
provide a rich source of material for
mentorship of medical students,
residents, and fellows at ISMMS. The
ultimate goal of her research is to
identify strategies to attain health
equity, and to catalyze the next
generation of women’s health
researchers.
