Rule #2: Craft answers to behavioral interview questions
What is Behavioral Event Interviewing (BEI)?
• Based on the idea that “Past performance on the job is the best predictor of future performance.”
• “Tell me about a time…”
How can I predict which behavioral questions might be asked?
• You can’t!
• You CAN prepare for BEI questions by developing ‘universal’ stories from your background.
• 4-6 stories from your professional experience; recent & relevant
• CAR Framework
− C=Challenge
− A=Action
− R=Result

What was the challenge or problem that you faced?Be specific and describe the project, team, event and your role.
1A = ACTION
What did you or your team do to answer the challenge or solve the problem?Don’t just speak in “we.” Specify your actions.
R = RESULT
Discuss the result achieved/outcome.Use metrics!

My role as project manager is to ensure that projects are completed on time and under budget. Last year, I was asked by leadership to combine three office spaces into one. With a tight deadline of 90 days and dealing with multiple contractors from different companies, I knew it was going to be a struggle to complete the job in time. I set the goal of having everything completed within 80 days to give us 10 days at the end to make final corrections.
As a result of this more efficient working time we completed the job on time and reduced costs by 15%. This new way of dividing contractors into smaller teams has now been implemented into standard work procedure and seen a reduction in overall costs.
By dividing all the different contractors into three main teams and having three project managers controlling the three teams, I was able to create a more efficient and effective work timetable and ensure that downtime was kept to a minimum.

I am excited for a new challenge.”
What are yoursalary expectations?
“I expect a salary that falls within market for this position and the experience I bring to it. I’m sure your company is competitive, what range did you have in mind for the role?”
