President David Turpin is the 13th president and vice-chancellor of the University of Alberta.

One of Canada’s most admired and respected post-secondary leaders, Dr. Turpin has held several leadership roles including president of the University of Victoria from 2000-2013. A distinguished scholar and Thomson ISI highly cited researcher, Dr. Turpin has earned many honours and distinctions for his research, teaching, and service to the community. Ross Lockwood earned his BSc in Honors Physics and a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Alberta. Throughout his academic work, Ross was involved with outreach through the University of Alberta Observatory and Scuba Club, which lead to his participating in the NASA-funded HI-SEAS Mars Simulation. Upon graduation, Ross went on to start the Science Hardware Hackerspace within the Department of Physics, and is now working on courseware for a Black Hole MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). Lister Centre offers a comprehensive meal plan for first year students. This means that you can focus on your classes and making friends instead of cooking and doing dishes! Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan, and halal are among the many options available each day at the Lister Market. If you don’t have a meal plan through your residence, you can still purchase food in your residence and around campus, or join the voluntary meal program in East Campus. There are numerous restaurants on and close to campus that offer a variety of different cultural cuisines.


DORMITORY-STYLE ROOMS: $415–$760 per month, depending on room type.

APARTMENT-STYLE UNITS:

$481–$1,450 per month, depending on number of bedrooms.

Ken Bautista, BEd 1999 Ken Bautista is Co-Founder of Startup Edmonton and Flightpath Ventures, activating and investing in Edmonton’s startup community through initiatives like The Startup City Project and Students to Startups. Ken has been in the creative/tech industry for over 10 years, co-founding several interactive companies, most recently Rocketfuel Games, an educational games studio, and co-founded community initiatives like TEDxEdmonton and artsScene Edmonton.

"In my second year of University, I decided to be an Orientation Leader, and during Orientation Week, I was actually Patches the Panda mascot! It was super fun! Since by second year I knew what I wanted to do, I became a lot more engaged, which I think makes a big difference. And then I joined the Education Students' Association, and in my third and fourth year I was the Technology Director for the ESA and then helped to develop the new website, things like that. Since graduating, I’ve had two companies. During that time, I worked with

UALBERTA ALUMNI STORYdifferent incubators in the city that would offer some space and some coaching, which were really valuable for me because I didn’t know anything, really, so I wanted to learn from everyone around me. But you had to step out and start doing that in those environments. I think the thing that was missing there was the community piece. And I think with the second company, Rocketfuel Games, especially since we were working with companies a lot outside of Edmonton, and people thought we were working from Vancouver or Toronto because we were developing educational kids software and we spent a lot of time on the road. Then coming back to Edmonton we thought, “is there anything going on here, why create this thing here.” And that’s where the first Startup Edmonton stuff started to form was because we could either take off, which would be the easy thing to do, or we could try to make something happen here.

In Edmonton, because it is smaller (or a small big city), we have a chance to make noise, and raise the bar for what we’re doing. I think that has been the difference, especially over the last three to five years—there has been a new wave of leaders coming out and building companies, starting stuff, doing things. When you start to get that mass, then the rest of the community starts to notice, and in bigger cities that doesn’t tend to happen.”
