Abstract

, ,

',' , }I'he variability of plastic charaeters and the nurnber of'kiel seales in two~and three-year-old sprat areeonsidered. The,stat~stieal 'analysis of the ,data showed the absene~ of sexualdimorphisffiand age variability by the majority of eharae, ters. The maximum depth' of body varies depending on the eonditionfaetor and fat content during thc spawning period. The sprat eof the coastal 'Danisll, waters ean be disti, nguished from the fishof other areas of the s~a (Farn Deeps, Dogger,: Southern) bythe lengths of snout and lowerjaw.

. There exists a good agreement between the results of; ,. . .

morphometrical investigations and genetie s~udies of polYmorph-ism'of muscle esterases. The'comparison of the allele frequencesof three polymorphie' loeuses oi, esterases and of ,one lOcus otmalatdehydrogenase of thesprat from the same areas demonstrated

, that the heterogeneity increases \Vi'th the, expansion of thes~pling a.J;'ea to the east, and that the sprat cf the Danish

, ,

watersdiffers from the same speeies of other North Sea areasin frequency of alleles of a number of loeuses. 4t
