Today the boat-building industry is carrying on the tradition in a modern way.
Its situation on the coast embodies a challenge in bringing the visitors to the
location, thus ensuring economic stability in the establishment of the centre.
Therefore the architect declared, that a building of significance was needed
to ensure attention to this community.
The architect put himself back into the ancient times of fishery and used
the culture for inspiration to create the vision. Thus his idea is based on the
image of 3 sails leaning against a modern vessel, and by this way bringing
together the sailing-boat tradition and the modern ships. The building turns
out to be an evolution of a coast-cultural history visualized in architecture.
The building even consists of an after-deck or a hind part to complete the
interpretation of the ship-inheritance.
The organization follows the architectural elements. The main central ves-
sel or hull as the spine of the building housing the administration, kitchen
and technical plants. The sails covering the foyer, restaurant and temporary
exhibition. The big rock on the other side symbolizing the shore the ship is
docking to, containing the multimedia and concert / auditorium space. At last

the after-deck containing the coast-cultural exhibition also designed by the
same Architect.
The climate by the sea requires special care in the choice of materials. There-
fore, the use of ALUCOBOND® for the sails was the right choice because of
its durability. The main ship was cast in concrete, with visual horizontal planks
simulating a wooden hull, and the after-deck walls are covered with timber
boards specially impregnated to make it look like the old wooden boats.
The building has already managed to draw great interest from outside Rørvik
and the northern part of Norway, but most important, it has already inspired
optimism in the Community, creating other investments, and leading to other
buildings and to enthusiasm in the society to look into the future. In its small
scale it has created a kind of a Bilbao effect for a community of 10 000 inhab-
itants and is still carrying on its mission as an architectural symbol of history
in evolution. The building was nominated for the European Union Mies van
der Rohe Award 2005. The primary objective of the prize is to recognize
and comment works of contemporary architecture that are characterized by
special conceptual, aesthetical and technical solutions.
The use of ALUCOBOND®

People are looking with a new view at the architecture of their own city. Plan-
ning for the Olympic Games 2012, various initiatives have been launched to
turn the city into a place of architectural interest, following Barcelona which
was by tradition much more receptive to accept new trends in the world of
art and culture. The extension of the Museum “Centro de Arte Reina Sofía”
is a clear example of how the city of Madrid has become more avant-garde
and is willing to take a more provocative approach towards architecture.
The renown French architect Jean Nouvel, who created Barcelona’s Torre
Agbar, is the man behind the design for the enlargement of the building where
the Italian Baroque style Reina Sofía Museum of the XVIII century is located.
Without altering the size of this historical site in the city of Madrid, he cre-
ated a complementary space which assimilates the latest architectural trends.
It’s another statement of the original and provocative conception which the
visionary Jean Nouvel has of architecture and space. In a public competition
held in 1999, the proposal was selected from over 100 entries. One of the
reasons that turned the decision in favour of Nouvel’s team was their ability
to enrich this part of the city with completely novel areas.
The extension was designed by its creator to be like a small-scale neighbour-
hood, comprising of three buildings which demarcate an area that is open
to the public. The three blocks are joined into one space by the shelter of
a spectacular shiny and coloured roof made of ALUCORE®, which boldly
protrudes out of the façade towards the Ronda de Atocha. When it came
to selecting the material, lightweight panels of high quality with a smooth
surface were sought. ALUCORE® panels clearly fulfilled all the requirements
due to their extraordinary smooth surface, their low weight on assembly
and the durability of the PVDF paint coating in a special colour of high gloss
which gives the special mirror effect desired by the architect. The panels
are mounted using a metal sub-frame which is fixed with brackets to the
primary structure. The enormous canopy, inspired by Jean Nouvel’s own
creation, the Cultural and Congress Centre in Lucerne (Switzerland), allows
natural light and sometimes even driving rain to enter the internal areas of the
public square, creating a sense of inherent lightness in the soft and natural
architecture of Jean Nouvel.
Visitors are moved by the visual contrast between the two completely different
architectural styles, the opaque and robust façade created centuries ago by
Sabatini and Nouvel’s airy and vivid modern looking addition. The new wing
contains three facilities: a hall for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium and
a library. A storage area for works of arts in the basement and offices and
meeting rooms complement the public areas. The extended “Centro de Arte
Reina Sofía” in the centre of Madrid has become another permanent landmark
of Jean Nouvel, the architect who knows how to provoke without offending,
to change without destroying and to revive old buildings for modern use. Un-
opposed by critics, the space created by Jean Nouvel brings interaction and
restored the classical impression of the most authentic Madrid.

The decision to unite the offices and the
factory of Tim Composites within one new
complex was made in 2002. Since 30 years,
the company is one of the most important
ALUCOBOND® fabricators in Europe.
The traditional construction of the new
site consists of a sub construction of steel
girders and a roof of insulated trapezoidal
profiles. The administration of fices are
standing out of the cube, which accom-
modation the manufacturing unit . They
are placed along the street as well as the
manufacturing in parallel at the rear part
of the site. Thus the design of the main
entry obtained an amble space to demon-
strate the technical and material abilities
of Tim Composites. The huge roofage of

Die traditionelle Konstruktion besteht aus
einer Unterkonstruktion aus Stahlträgern
sowie einem Dach aus isolierten Stahl-Tra-

ders der Verwaltungsbereich vom Kubus der

tionsbereich parallel dazu im hinteren Teil des
Geländes. So erhält der Haupteingang Raum,
um das breite Spektrum der Materialien mit
deren technischen Möglichkeiten von Tim

of the building a cyma breaks the horizontal

fixings and conic portholes are clearly point-
ing out a grade of technical specialization in
manufacturing, which is hard to find within
the industrial building sector. Indeed the
new building is a showcase of technical pos-

The media coverage of the Clinton Presidential Center has been extensive,
beginning with the dedication ceremony in November 2004, at the 28-acre
(11.3 ha) site on the Arkansas River. The integrated architectural and site
design transforms the former industrial site of old warehouses and un-
developed open space to create a presidential complex that formally and
programmatically expresses the optimism and achievements of the Clinton
presidency. The 165 000 sq.ft. (15 300 m²) center serves as a virtual library,
allowing visitors access to documents, video footage and photos from the
Clinton administration. Principal spaces include permanent and temporary
exhibitions, education and media center, café and gift shop. The archive
is linked to the main building and includes research and collection storage
facilities. The Clinton Public Policy Institute and the Clinton School of Pub-
lic Service will occupy the refurbished Choctaw Station, and the restored
Rock Island Railroad Bridge will create a pedestrian river crossing. The main
public portion of the center contains the Museum and Great Hall / Gathering
Space, and is conceived of as a glass enclosed bridge elevated over the Park
and cantilevered over the Arkansas River. The transparent and translucent
volume of the building will allow exhibits to be day lit and will afford views
along its entire length toward the Park, the river, the six bridges, downtown
Little Rock and the Heights beyond. Secure collections storage is located at
and below grade in the Archive building, whose north side is defined as a
linear two-story glazed pavilion, which contains research offices and support
spaces for archivists and scholars.

Clad in glass and metal, the main building’s bridge-like form provides a visual
reference to Little Rock’s distinctive “Six Bridges,” according to Polshek
Partnership Architects. “The main body of the Center has been elevated
off the ground plane, allowing the new park which will include areas for
both passive and active engagement with the river and the landscape to
flow uninterrupted underneath,” reads a Polshek statement. “Contrasting
with the suspended form of the ‘bridge building’ is the ‘earthbound’ archive
building, clad in stone and concrete.” The ALUCOBOND® material is in good
company, as architectural editorials refer to a multitude of innovative product
applications, ranging from high-performance glass and solar modules to au-

In Zusammen-

A clinic sets new trends in architecture
The „Klinik im Schachen“ needed an exten-
sion due to the rapid growth in the health
care sector. The new complex is linked to
the old structure by a staircase tower clad
with anodized ALUCOBOND®. The metal
finish and the enamelled glass at the outer
parapets are depicting an elegant, frank and
confident image. Flexible planning, a short
construction schedule and a tight budget rep-
resented a challenge, which was perfectly
borne by ALUCOBOND® due to its shaping
variety, easy handling, long term durability
and weather resistance.

An Oasis of Modern HealthcareSerdang Hospital, Malaysia
State-of-the-art Serdang Hospital, planned across a 45-acre (18 ha)
site, is strategically located near Putrajaya, Malaysia’s new Federal
Government Administration Centre.
The hospital is designed as a low-rise horizontal development to give a
“patient-friendly” appearance. It consists of a four-level podium base with
another four storeys for its wards. An extensive internal mall connects the
building from end to end. A gentle curve on plan, the layout helps break up
its mass and reduce the impact of the hospital street. A glass atrium and a
cone-shaped skylight provide a spacious, airy ambiance for the hospital’s
outpatient entrance. Pockets of landscaped open courtyards are interspersed
within the entire building to give patients, visitors and hospital workers a
sense of nature and quiet serenity.
68 000 m² (731 700 sq.ft.) of ALUCOBOND® aluminium composite panels,
with its tried-and-tested properties of longevity and low maintenance under
local climate conditions, were used to dress the façade of Serdang Hospital
to create a modern yet non-industrial and un-intimidating look. Sunrise silver
metallic ALUCOBOND® was chosen as the main theme because it reflects
the changing hues of the day – brilliant white under the bright sun, or a warm
purplish shade at dusk; while Grey blue metallic ALUCOBOND® accentuates
the blue tint of the glass panes, as well as the blue-sky backdrop, enhancing
the tranquil atmosphere surrounding the hospital.
This modern low-rise architecture is designed to harmonize with
the lush greenery that surrounds it, projecting modernity
within an oasis of calm. Sitting amidst a natural tropi-
cal environment, Serdang Hospital is indeed a
sight that befits the sophistication of 21st
century healthcare in Malaysia.

Eine Oase des modernen
Gesundheitswesens
Das Serdang Hospital befindet sich in
Putrajaya, dem Verwaltungszentrum der
Regierung Malaysias. Die Klinik bringt
Moderne in eine Oase der Ruhe. Den
Patienten wird heitere Offenheit im Ein-
klang mit der natürlichen Umgebung durch
nie drig gehaltene Formen übermittelt. Vier
Podien sind durch eine interne Erschlies-
sung miteinander verbunden. Ein Atrium
aus Glas und ein konisches Dachfenster
bilden Freiraum. Die Entscheidung fiel auf
ALUCOBOND® aufgrund seiner Leichtigkeit
und Beständigkeit. Sunrise Silbermetallic
schafft zudem Farbvariationen in Abhän-
gigkeit von Lichteinfall und -intensität.

Volkswagen-Werk in Bratislava
Anfang der 90er Jahre gründete VW mit
der Volkswagen Bratislava eine 100%ige
Tochtergesellschaft der Volkswagen AG. An
diesem Standort werden die Modelle Polo,
Golf Variant 4Motion, der Seat Ibiza sowie
der luxuriöse Touareg produziert. Was 1992
nur wenige Kilometer vor der slowakischen
Hauptstadt Bratislava mit einer Endmonta-
ge von 2 175 Fahrzeugen begann, erreichte
2003 mit dem millionsten Fahrzeug einen
weiteren Höhepunkt. Profiliert hat sich der
Standort Bratislava vor allem durch seine
Flexibilität. Im Jahr 2002 wurde ein neues
Gelände erschlossen und ein moderner
Werkseingang errichtet. Die Überdachun-
gen der Werkseinfahrt, das Pförtnerhaus
und die Personaleingänge wurden mit
3 000 m² ALUCOBOND® in silbermetallic
verkleidet.
A cet endroit
sont produits les modèles Polo, Golf Va-
riant 4Motion, la Seat Ibiza et la luxueuse
Touareg.
moderne. Le nouvel auvent de l’entrée, la
conciergerie, et l’entrée du personnel ont
été habillés avec 3 000 m² d’ALUCOBOND®,
couleur „Argent Métallique“, dont les ca-
ractéristiques de formabilité, d’élégance
et de longévité sont reconnues.
Factory of Volkswagen in Bratislava
Beginning of the 1990s VW established a
wholly owned subsidiary, which is located
only a few kilometers from the Slovakian
capital Bratislava. Today, they produce here
the models Polo, Golf Variant 4Motion, the
Seat Ibiza and the luxury Touareg. Whereas
in 1992 only 2 175 cars were assembled, in
2003 production reached a peak when the
1 000 000th vehicle rolled out from the pro-
duction lines. The plant is well recognised
for its flexibility. 2002 a new extension was
added and a new entrance was built. The
roof over gateway, the guard house and
the staff entrance were clad with 3 000 m²
(32 200 sq.f t . ) of ALUCOBOND® in silver
metallic colour. ALUCOBOND® can easily
be shaped, which makes it versatile in its
applications. Its outstanding properties
are elegance, durability and flexibility, all
characteristics which are also attributes
of the cars produced at the VW factory in
Bratislava.
The new entrance and the guard
house show elegance, durability and
flexibility – also attributes of the
cars produced by VW Bratislava.
