ing Authority », crée pour superviser

tionné les architectes Ellerbe Becket

pour la conception du projet.

Les architectes Ellerbe Becket ont écrit le

concept, « L’arène est l’épicentre de l’his-

toire régionale et nationale, et de la culture

populaire. Le design du New Memphis

Arena est une combinaison d’anciennes et

de nouvelles traditions, ce qui permettra

à chacun de retrouver ses racines, tandis

que collectivement cela forme une vision

Im Jahr 2001 wurde die „Memphis

Arena Building Authority” gegründet,

um den Bau des neuen Sport- und

Freizeitzentrums im Stadtzentrum

zu überwachen.

Das Architekturbüro Ellerbe Becket erhielt

den Planungsauftrag für das Projekt und

beschreibt das Konzept: „Das FedEx-Forum

stellt das Epizentrum der regionalen und

nationalen Geschichte und Kultur dar. Das

Gestaltungs-Konzept der neuen Memphis

Arena entstand durch Verschmelzung von

alten und neuen Werten. So kann jeder hier

seine Wurzeln finden, während im gleichen

Atemzug durch diese Liaison eine Zukunfts-

vision geschaffen wird.” Die Materialien

The Authority selected the architecture and engineering firm of Ellerbe Becket

to design the new downtown arena, which opened in 2004. Lead architect

Jon Niemuth of Ellerbe Becket writes in his architectural statement, “… the

Arena site is an epicenter of regional and national history and popular culture.

These elements create an opportunity to express and fuse elements of the

past with those of today in a contemporary expression.” That’s fitting, as the

Ellerbe Becket firm states, “… the new FedEx Forum is located near historic

Beale Street in the heart of one of America’s liveliest entertainment districts.”

According to Jon Niemuth, “The design of the New Memphis Arena is envi-

sioned as a timeline, a blending of old and new traditions in a way that allows

each to remain true to their respective roots while collectively forming a vi-

sion for the future. This idea is not new to our times, or the city of Memphis,

a place whose own evolution is as rich and diverse as history itself.”

So, it is also fitting that one of the materials selected for the exterior is a con-

temporary material that can be designed and fabricated for compatibility with

traditional elements. Among the materials selected for exterior cladding was

ALUCOBOND® Material in panels of 4 mm thickness. The project required ap-

proximately 98 000 sq.ft. of ALUCOBOND®, which was fabricated into � 800

panels. Colors selected for the building included four different colors of red

for the main body of the building, as well as a color of Forum Silver near the

top of the building, and Memphis Bronze color for column and beam wraps.

Thanks to a unique computer program, the four red colors of ALUCOBOND®

Material were randomly assigned to the body of the building during the de-

sign phase. John W. McDougall Co., Inc. of Nashville, was the distributor,

fabricator, and installer of ALUCOBOND® Material for this project, using the

Series 400 Rainscreen system. The ALUCOBOND® Material relates to the

traditional use of brick on many Memphis buildings, both old and new.

According to Ellerbe Becket, “As the home of the NBA Memphis Grizzlies,

the arena seats 18 200 spectators on five levels for basketball. With a variety

of seating layouts and an integrated ice floor, it will also host events ranging

from concerts and hockey to exhibitions, family shows, rodeos and indoor

motor sports. FedEx Forum is designed to provide outstanding guest comfort,

excellent sightlines and acoustics, and seating flexibility for the wide range of

potential events.” Related parts of the project include a 1 500-vehicle parking

garage, a four-story office building and the Smithsonian Institution’s Rock ‘n’

Soul Museum. The connection to Memphis music is evident in the themed

areas of the concourses and a public art project with original art that interprets

the area’s music. Additional entertainment areas outside and �5 000 sq.ft. of

exterior plaza further enhance the appeal of the facility.

Among others involved in the “integrated team” approach to the project were

The new administration building of Hugo

Boss expresses this pretension perfectly.

The vertical lines of the subtle glass and

aluminium construction are accentuating

the two cubes of the complex, whereas

the collateral sides are stressed by the

The time of installation was extremely

short: 1 000 m² of ALUCOBOND® could

be mounted within 40 days only due to

the profitable SZ20 system. With the

use of ALUCOBOND® panels on the

façade a durable and timeless system

was applied, perfectly corresponding to

the stylish image of this fashion group.

strong insolation and pollution.

Mit ALUCOBOND® Verbundplatten kam beim Neubau des Verwaltungsge-

bäudes der Hugo Boss AG ein beständiges und zeitloses Fassadensystem

zum Einsatz, das dem stilvollen Image des Modekonzerns entspricht. Die

In mid 200�, IKEA had planned to build a new massive showroom right at

the heart of the Jeddah known as the Red Sea City. The project design with

9 500 m² cladding required specified painted corrugated sheet finishes for

the external façade during the initial design stage. With full trust and confi-

dence on ALUCOBOND®, Electromechanical & Technical Associates – never

ceased on aggressive promotion and coordination with the Project Consult-

ants and the Main Contractor in providing detailed technical information and

advantages. ALUCOBOND® was finally selected and approved beyond the

stiff competition due to its high technical quality and low maintenance cost

which in turn comply with IKEA’s low cost concept.

Today, the IKEA Shop illuminates with typical ALUCOBOND® blue tray panels

on the entire elevations of the building reflecting a perfect combination with

trapezoidal yellow panels at the main façade. This impressive technology has

created a landmark in the Red Sea City capturing and attracting shoppers

by its remarkable and vibrant external finishes. This project is a real success

not only for the IKEA but also for ALUCOBOND® which has established its

name as a word of mouth in the ACP market.

Important hotel companies have turned

architecture into a strategy for creating

or re-launching their own image to reach

more competitive standards. To realize

this aim, they assign internationally

famous designers and architects.

UNA Hotel’s philosophy also falls in line

with this new strategy. UNA Hotel is a

dynamic hotel group that has chosen “the

designer touch” as its trump card. The new

UNA Hotel Malpensa just opened with

its futuristic building forms. The Roman

architect Renzo Costa deserves praise

for his interpretation of such a complex,

functional task while complying with all

the rigorous building constraints. He has

designed a structure whose stylistic fea-

tures are carefully scaled to fit into the

Der römische Architekt Renzo Costa verdient

komplexer, funktioneller Anforderungen

unter Einhaltung aller Bauvorschriften. Er

hat eine Gestaltung geschaffen, deren

stilistische Eigenschaften sorgfältig auf-

einander abgestimmt sind, um sich der

surroundings. “Symbols” and “Motion”

are the two keys of this design concept.

Located along the main road to Malpensa

Airport and nearby the new Milan Trade

Fair, the building stands out against the

flat surroundings marked by a number

of important communication nodes. Its

towering, dynamic outlines rise up over

eleven stories, completely enveloped by

two asymmetric and counteracting metal

sails of ALUCOBOND®. The composed

energy, shaping the overall design, is

generated by a parallelepiped clad with

horizontal sheets of white ceramics con-

trasting with the static character of the

sloping windows. The two silver sails

cladded with ALUCOBOND® emerge

from the wide structural design along

the longitudinal axis.

Landschaft anzupassen. „Symbole“ und

„Bewegung“ sind die Schlüssel zu diesem

Konzept. Gelegen an der Hauptstraße zum

Flughafen Malpensa in Nähe zum Messe-

gelände Mailands sticht das Gebäude aus

der eher flachen Umgebung hervor. Seine

hoch aufragende, dynamische Silhoutte

erhebt sich über elf Stockwerke, die von

zwei asymmetrischen Metallsegeln aus

ALUCOBOND® eingerahmt werden. Die

ruhige Energie des Gesamtbilds wird

geschaffen von einem parallelepiped

Keramikplatten, die vom statischen

Charakter der geneigten Fenster abste-

chen. Die beiden silbernen Segel aus

ALUCOBOND® treten von der breiten

come fattore vincente. Il nuovo UNA Hotel Malpensa declina in un edificio

dalle forme avveniristiche il tema dell’architettura e di una nuova formula

di ospitalità. Il merito del Progettista, l’architetto romano Renzo Costa, è

quello di aver saputo interpretare le esigenze di un programma funzionale

complesso e condizionato da una rigida normativa, plasmando un volume

con valenze espressive tali da coinvolgere la percezione di scala e di sistema

del territorio circostante. «Simbolo» e «movimento» sono i due pesi su cui

viene carato il progetto concepito come parte di un contesto geografico

particolarmente strategico.

Situato sulla direttrice per l’aeroporto di Milano Malpensa e vicino al nuovo

Polo fieristico milanese, l’edificio si impone nello skyline di un paesaggio

piatto e inciso da importanti nodi di comunicazione.

Una sagoma svettante e dinamica si staglia nel cielo per undici piani, intera-

mente avvolti da due vele metalliche asimmetriche e contrapposte. L’energia

composta che dà forma all’insieme si genera da un parallelepipedo rivestito

a lastre orizzontali di gres porcellanato bianco che viene contraddetto nella

sua staticità da una finestratura a forma di fuso inclinato. Dalla dilatazione

delle volumetrie lungo l’asse longitudinale prendono origine le due vele ar-

dono il volume del corpo camere. Una grande lama rossa che dall’esterno

taglia idealmente in diagonale l’intera struttura evidenzia le zone di ingresso

con maggior dinamismo. Energia e dinamisimo animano sia gli spazi interni

sia i volumi esterni pensati da progettista come Architettura del movimento,

della vibrazione. Da qui l’idea delle «vele» che già nella loro forma, esaltata

dalla perfezione dei rivestimenti ALUCOBOND®, racchiudono la percezione

del movimento attraverso un forte richiamo a ciò che più di ogni altra cosa

è in moto perpetuo: il mare, con le sue onde infinite, con i suoi spazi vasti e

imponenti. Una impostazione progettuale raggiunta e visibile sia nell’alzato

dei prospetti sia nello sviluppo planimetrico: la continua ricerca del moto ha

portato a pensare alla pianta stessa come ad un qualcosa di vivo, tanto da

darle la forma di un «pesce». Il grande foro sulle facciate rende più leggera

e percettibile la sensazione dell’effetto-vela.

Una nuova proposta di architettura sviluppata anche con la qualificata col-

laborazione dello staff/tecnico manageriale di «Una Hotel e Resort» e con

l’accurata scelta dei più idonei materiali impiegati come ALUCOBOND,

grazie a cui l’Architetto ha potuto tramutare «un sogno progettuale» in una

meravigliosa realtà.

Depuis ces quinze dernières an-

nées de nombreuses constructions

monumentales ont vu le jour dans

la métropole de Shanghai.

L’éminent Shanghai Oriental Art Centre est

un des plus grands et des plus connus – un

centre culturelle, dessiné par l’architecte

Parisien Paul Andreu en collaboration avec

East China Architectural Design et Re-

search Institute. L’idée était de réaliser un

complexe, qui soit lumineux et transparent

comme par magie. Cependant la meilleure

magie architecturale est basée sur une

planification méticuleuse. Andreu avait la

vision « d’un dôme, de forme geodésique,

flottant sur l’eau et rayonnant dans la nuit.

» La vue aérienne révèle un design frappant,

attractif et innovant en forme de pétale.

viele monumentale Gebäude in Shang-

hai aus dem Boden geschossen. Das

Shanghai Oriental Art Centre ist eines

der größten und bekanntesten

Ein Komplex, der „hell und transparent,

irgendwie magisch erscheint“. Jedoch

basiert auch die beste architektonische

Magie auf akribischer Planung. Andreu hat-

te „die Vision einer runden, geodätischen

Kuppel, die auf dem Wasser treibt und bei

Nacht leuchtet“. Aus der Vogelperspektive

offenbart sich das auffallende, attraktive

und innovative Design in Form einer Blüte.

Unter der Dachverkleidung sitzen unter

Einsatz aktuellster Technologien Millionen

leuchtender Dioden, die zum Rhythmus

der Musik in den Nachthimmel scheinen.

nocturne au rythme de la musique. Pour

réaliser le design des traits architecturaux,

l’ALUCORE® en 20 mm d’épaisseur a été

choisi pour sa planéité parfaite. Le produit

est installé horizontalement à une distance

de �00 mm du toit primaire, donnant assez

d’espace pour la mise en place de tous les

appareillages et équipements d’éclairages.

Le système permet de lever les panneaux

afin d’assurer le service et la maintenance

des équipements. « Très peu de mètres

carrés dans une ville qui, tous les jours, en

construit tant de nouveaux, mais donnant

beaucoup de bonheur et d’enthousiasme.

Et, au-delà de l’architecture devenue serv-

ante, beaucoup, beaucoup de musique ! »,

explique l’architecte Paul Andreu.

ihrer absoluten Planheit ausgewählt,

die �00 mm oberhalb des Hauptdaches

Das Shanghai Oriental Art Centre bedeu-

tet „einige Quadratmeter in einer stark

bebauten Stadt, die Freude und Enthu-

siasmus einschließen und jenseits der

Architektur – die als Diener fungiert – viel,

viel Musik“, so der Architekt.

The Shanghai Oriental Art Centre is one of the biggest and most talked

about projects to be completed in Shanghai, if not the whole of Asia, in the

past couple of years. It is a first rate public cultural building, financed by the

municipality of Shanghai, China. The complex encompasses three venues:

a 1 9�9-seat philharmonic orchestra hall, a 1 054-seat lyric theatre, and a

��0-seat chamber music hall. It also features ancillary public facilities such

as an exhibition hall, music shops, a restaurant and an arts library, as well as

a multimedia and training centre.

The architect Paul Andreu has created in collaboration with East China Ar-

chitectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. a building that is “bright

and transparent as if by magic”. However, like the best architectural magic,

the building’s foundations are rooted in meticulous engineering. “When I

first conceived the Shanghai Oriental Centre, one of my first thoughts was

that I wanted it to glow beautifully at night. After all, what is an art centre?

It’s a place where music and theatre are performed. It should be appealing,

especially in the evenings, when the crowds are attending. It should project

a sense of mystery. It should certainly not feel closed, stuffy or boring”, he

explains. He had “the vision of a round, geodesic dome floating in the water

and glowing at night”. “As an architect and an engineer I am always trying

to find better solutions. I wanted the whole construction to be glowing. I

wanted the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre to say: ‘The Show’s Beginning!’”

Architecturally the design is striking, beautiful and innovative. The aerial view

displays the building’s formation of a petal. Beneath the roof cladding millions

of glowing diodes dance and shine into the night sky to the rhythm of music

realized by the most innovative technology to date.

To achieve the designed architectural features, function and remarkable per-

formance, 20 mm thick ALUCORE® panels were chosen due to their absolute

flatness. Installed horizontally at a distance of approximately �00 mm away

from the primary roof, they are creating enough space to accommodate all

the lightings and equipment “of the light show” beneath it. The cladding sys-

tem and the fixing method were specially designed to enable easy servicing

and maintenance of the equipment by removing the panels temporarily. The

�0 mm joints between the ALUCORE® panels were not spared but fully used

for the unimpeded lighting to shine through and dance along.

In a few words the architect summarizes: “What is it? Simply this: a place

for music. Covering very few square metres in a city where so much is being

built every day, but encompassing so much happiness and enthusiasm. And,

beyond the architecture, which is but a servant, plenty, plenty of music.”
