Messer Supplies Nitrogen Unit forReactor Cooling at LANXESS

Messer Group GmbH (Sulzbach, Ger-many) is installing a reactor cooling

unit at LANXESS Deutschland AG. The so-called Cryocontrol unit, which uses cryo-genic liquid nitrogen as a coolant, will beused for rubber-related research anddevelopment purposes at the Dormagensite. The start-up of this unit providesMesser with a new reference in the fieldof reactor cooling. In modern pharmaceu-tical and fine chemical production (e.g.,in the production of active ingredients),very low process temperatures are oftenrequired in reactors. These low tempera-tures help to ensure targeted control ofsynthesis steps or to increase productyield. Temperature requirements as low as-100°C are not unusual. As a rule, hightemperatures are also required in thesame process step. The Cryocontrolprocess uses cryogenic liquid nitrogen toproduce these low temperatures.

Air Liquide Signs Contract with Poscofor Two ASU’s in South Korea

Air Liquide (Paris, France) has recentlysigned a contract with Posco E&C, the

Engineering and Construction division ofPosco, to design and build two very largeAir Separation Units (ASU), each of whichwill have an oxygen production capacityof 3,750 tons per day. This is the largestproduction capacity designed so far for asteelmaker by Air Liquide. Oxygen is usedto transform cast iron into steel. These twonew units will be installed at Posco’sGwangyang and Pohang sites in SouthKorea. The oxygen they produce willenable the Gwangyang site to support thePosco Group’s increase in global steel pro-duction. The second unit will meet grow-ing demand for oxygen in connection withthe construction of a second steel plant(with a production capacity of 2 milliontons per year) on the Pohang site. Poscois the largest integrated steel producer inthe country and one of the most importantin the world. Founded in 1968 and priva-tized in 2000, Posco has led the Koreansteel industry for more than four decades. In 2010, Posco produced 33.7 milliontons of crude steel. Air Liquide has beenworking with Posco for more than 25years, and has already supplied it with 17ASUs on these two sites in South Korea.
