Urbaniak, MD Box 2912 Duke University Medical Center Durham, NC 27710 (919) 684-5388 The VIII IFSSH Congress in Istanbul, Turkey, June 10-14, 2001—A Great Success Congratulations from around the world have been extended to Ridvan Ege and his organizing committee from the Turkish Society for Surgery of the Hand for hosting the VIII IFSSH Congress in Istanbul. The Congress was a tremendous success by all standards. There were 835 registrants from 54 countries. Dr Yasuo Yamauchi, the President of the IFSSH, officially opened the Congress. The registrants were honored to be wel- comed by Mr Suleyman Demirel, the President of Turkey. President Yamauchi and Chairman of the Nominating Comit- tee, Giorgio Brunelli, presented the newly selected Pioneers of Hand Surgery who were as follows: Valentin Grigore Aburel Romania Paola Bedeschi Italy Harold Bolton Great Britain F. Merih Eroglu Turkey Anastasios Giannikas Greece Jamal Gousheh Iran Stewart H. Harrison Great Britain Isidor Kessler Israel Brij Bhushan Joshi India Ronald L. Linscheid USA Takayuki Miura Japan Robert Henry Cradock Robins Great Britain Harilaos T. Sakellarides Greece Richard J. Smith USA Joerg Boehler Austria Outstanding social events included the Opening Reception, Turkish Folk Dancing and Ballet following a champagne re- ception, dinner and a ship cruise of the Bosphorus, and a closing ceremonial dinner and dance at the magnificent Ciragon Palace Hotel. Sightseeing daytime tours included visits to Top- kapi Palace, St Sophia Museum, historical Sultan Ahmet Mosque, and a concert by the Ottoman Military Band. The scientific meeting was extremely well organized includ- ing international experts on all of the subspecialties of the upper extremity. There were 41 sessions with 465 presenta- tions, 20 panels, and 215 poster presentations. The most up-to- date modern audiovisual communication systems were used and managed without substantial flaws. Officers for the IFSSH Executive Committee for 2001-2004 are: President—Guy Foucher, MD (France) President-elect—Arlindo Pardini, MD (Brazil) Immediate Past President—Yasuo Yamauchi, MD (Japan) Secretary-Treasurer—James R. Urbaniak, MD (USA) Secretary-Treasurer-Elect—Ulrich Mennen, MD (South Africa) Historian—Douglas Lamb, MD (Great Britain) The International Hand Surgeons were indeed fortunate to have President Yamauchi as our leader for the past 3 years. He has fostered many activities, unity, purpose, and financial sta- bility for the Federation. The leaders of the Turkish Society for Surgery of the Hand and Professor Ege and his committed and proficient organizing committee deserve to be extremely proud of hosting a highly successful Congress. After counting the income and expendi- tures for the Congress, the Turkish Society for Surgery of the Hand has contributed a remarkable $55,871 to the treasury of the IFSSH. This amount more than doubled the previous most profitable IFSSH Congress. We salute the Turkish Society for Surgery of the Hand, the enchanting city of Istanbul, and the Turkish people in general for hosting a most unforgettable academic and society experience for those who were fortunate enough to have attended this Congress.
