Changing Landscape of External Lab ServicesA recent study showed that the top decision criteria when selecting a food contract laboratory for microbiology testing are price, turnaround time and dependability.
However, when looking specifically at pathogen testing, accreditations are key. The survey, conducted by
Strategic Consulting, examined more than 100 food processors currently using a food contract laboratory.
The study highlighted that only one
third of food processors were willing to conduct pathogen tests in-house with more companies becoming wary of the risks and costs associated with pathogen testing. Outsourcing has continued to grow and the total volume of pathogen tests at external laboratories is increasing >13% year on year. This shift is not only changing the face of microbiology testing but creating an increasingly competitive market for lab services. Read more at www.foodsafetytech.com

What is ISO 11133? ISO 11133:2014 is a standard that focuses on the quality assurance of culture media.
It defines the mandatory requirements for the preparation, production, storage and performance testing of all media
intended for the microbial analysis of food, animal feed or water. For manufacturers of culture media, the ISO criterion is even more stringent with the addition of further Quality Control (QC) checks.
Lab M has an international reputation for the quality of its Dehydrated Culture Media (DCM). Our comprehensive QC programmes ensure our media is produced and tested to the highest possible standard.
Available in various formats our DCM has been designed and manufactured to support various workflows and streamline efficiencies across different microbiology laboratories.

Lab M’s Complete Range of HP Compliant Media
WHAT IS HP?HP is short for Harmonised Pharmacopoeia. A pharma-copoeia is a legally binding collection of standards and specifications for medicines used in a specified country or region.
The United States Pharmacopoeia, European Pharmacopoeia and Japanese Pharmacopoeia (USP/EP/JP) are standardised and often referred to as the HP, providing globally interchangeable compliance methods.

As part of our increasing product range, we are proud to introduce our new Salmonella CASE (Chromogenic Agar for Salmonella Esterase) media.
CASE has enhanced specificity and selectivity for the detection of Salmonella and is manufactured with
a unique chromogen composition patented by Lab M. This means that compared with other commercially available media, our agar offers a clearer differentiation
between Salmonella and non-Salmonella colonies. It also eliminates the risk of recording false positives for other similar Enterobacteriaceae.
Designed to support the ISO 6579 workflow, our media is supplied pre- supplemented saving precious hands-on time in the laboratory and is available now as part of our Harlequin™ chromogenic media range. Contact us today for more information.

Spotlight on: Campylobacter
Campylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK and is found in chicken and other
poultry. Reports show that at least 65% of our shop bought raw chicken is contaminated with Campylobacter which can cause illness through cross- contamination or when chicken is not cooked correctly. Every year in the UK a staggering 280,000 cases of Campylobacter poisoning are reported.
In response to this, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has launched an initiative to bring together the whole food chain to reduce levels of Campylobacter in chicken and reduce the burden of foodborne illness in the UK. The ‘Acting on Campylobacter Together’ (ACT) campaign brings together representatives from government, retailers, caterers, poultry producers and processors, and consumer organisations who have committed to their part in the fight against Campylobacter.
Now in its second year, the ACT campaign has focussed on many factors including better hygiene controls and raising awareness, as well as tracking Campylobacter rates on raw chickens via year-long supermarket surveys. The results show progress in the industry with the most recent reports stating that Campylobacter was present on 50% of chicken samples, down from 71% in the equivalent quarter last year.

campaign visit www.food.gov.uk
