I can’t believe how quickly the year is going by. Cynthia McKeich will become President of OCULA after the OLA Super Conference in February 2006. She is very innovative, dedicated and dynamic, so it will be an exciting year. It has been a privilege to work with the members of this year’s OCULA Council - Delia Antonacci, Cynthia McKeich, Martie Grof- Iannelli, Sophie Bury, Gohar Ashoughian, Martha Joyce and Daniel Phelan. They have all worked extremely hard on behalf of OCULA and the result has been a very productive year for the divi- sion. Many thanks to all of them. We have several vacancies coming up on OCULA Council. Sophie Bury is fin- ishing her term as an OCULA Councilor-At-Large and Martha Joyce’s term as Secretary/Treasurer will be coming up at the end of the year. In the afternoon, the AcademicLibrarians’ Panel – consistingof M. J. D’Elia (AcademicLiaison Librarian, Universityof Guelph Library); ReaDevakos (T-Space ServiceCoordinator, InformationTechnology Services,University of TorontoLibraries); Cecile Farnum(Communications and LiaisonLibrarian, Ryerson UniversityLibrary); Ilo Maimets (ScienceLibrarian, Steacie Science andEngineering Library, YorkUniversity); and Rhonda Roth(Information ServicesLibrarian, Learning Commons,Seneca College) – providedfascinating ideas and approach-es as they talked about theirown marketing experiences andsuccess stories. As everyone is aware, a copy-right reform bill (Bill C-60) iscurrently under considerationby the House of Commons.OCULA Council has drafted aletter to the Honourable LizaFrulla acknowledging the posi-tive aspects of the Bill but ask-ing for further amendments.

And congratulations are inorder for several people.Gohar Ashoughian, editor ofInsideOCULA, Robin Bergart,one of our Super Conferencecoordinators, and Jane Burpeehave all been given thePresidential DistinguishedProfessor and Librarian Awardby the University of Guelph.Mary Kandiuk, referencelibrarian at the Scott Library atYork University is the recipientof CAUT’s AcademicLibrarians’ DistinguishedService Award. OLA has launched its AfricaProject. Money is being raisedfor school and health kits, tohelp build a combinedschool/public library, and tosupply materials on an annualbasis to libraries in the schoolsof Kenya. Donations to theAfrica Project can be madeonline by going to the OLAweb site.

Guelph Librarians honoured by Faculty Association By Wendy Rodgers

Jim Brett and Linda Graburn of the University of GuelphLibrary recently received awards from the University of GuelphFaculty Association. These awards provide peer recognition ofcolleagues who have made significant contributions to the aca-demic life of the University.

Linda Graburn was given the Academic Librarianship Award.She was recognized for exemplary service to students, particu-larly graduate students, and for her dedication to developingand upgrading library research resources.

The comments provided by peers demonstrate Linda’s highlyeffective performance of librarianship at Guelph. She was citedfor her research consultations, having assisted more than 70graduate students in their literature reviews. As her peer cita-tion states, "Linda has a passion for her work and she encour-ages her students to seek this passion in their work. She hasmanaged to spark enthusiasm for research in some of the mostindifferent students." Linda was commended also for her levelof commitment: "Linda is the kind of librarian who is entirelyprofessional, for whom no task or situation is too challenging."

Jim Brett was honoured with the Faculty Association’s SpecialMerit Award. He was cited for implementing novel ideas tokeep the library and its resources at the forefront of technologyand science, including his work on the development of theOntario Veterinary College Learning Commons, and his recentcampus-wide championing of RefWorks bibliographic software.He was also recognized by colleagues as a source of sound pro-fessional guidance. As his peer citation states, "Jim is an out-standing, professional, friendly and efficient individual who is asignificant asset to the OVC community." The citation alsodescribes Jim as “truly a man of vision”.

Jim is the second librarian to win this prestigious award in themore than 20 years it has been given. n n n

improve the quality and quantityof public domain information onthe Internet by digitizing librarybook collections and other formsof archives. The Open ContentAlliance(www.opencontentalliance.org),which includes Adobe, EuropeanArchive, HP Labs, InternetArchive, National Archives(UK), O'Reilly Media, PrelingerArchives, University ofCalifornia, University of Torontoand Yahoo! will help build a per-manent archive of multilingualdigitized text and multimedia content.

The University of Toronto's com-mitment is to make availableapproximately 3,000 out-of-print,out-of-copyright volumes ofCanadiana in digital format overthe next several years. This mate-rial (largely the works of authorswho died over 50 years ago, orwho have released their copy-rights to their works more recent-ly) would be freely availableonline, searchable with a Yahoo-provided search engine, but link-able and searchable by other sitesas well. U of T's involvementwith the Open Content Alliancewill help bring a valuable portionof our country's history to thegeneral public and the world.

UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOOOctober marked the opening ofthe newly renovated Sims SilentStudy Area in the Davis CentreLibrary. This space provides stu-dents with larger, better equippedstudy carrels, more comfortable

chairs and new carpet. The DanaPorter Library is also undergoingrenovations of the entire 3rdfloor that will include additionalcomputing workstations and thecreation of the Peter and BettySims Reading Room. Thisenclosed reading room will housea collection of current periodicalsand provide a space that is invit-ing, warm and quiet for conduct-ing reading, research and study.

UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN

ONTARIOIn September, the Libraries par-ticipated in Western’s OrientationWeek. With thanks to the inspi-ration and hard work of MelanieBurnard and Marisa Mitchell,Outreach Librarians, and withhelp from staff from across thelibrary system at every level, anambitious marketing initiativewas taken from idea to successfulventure within six weeks. Morethan a thousand students madethe trek up the stairs to visit theLibraries’ O-Week informationcentre in a tent just outside ofThe D.B. Weldon Library. Staffwore specially designed t-shirtsin Western colours with the slo-gan “Just Try to GraduateWithout Us” on the front and alist of services that would takemore than one breath to read outloud on the back. As studentsloaded up with candy, bracelets,tattoos and pens, they alsoreceived valuable informationabout upcoming wireless clinics,fall instruction programming, andbookmarks with library hours.

Most impor-tantly, throughthis warm wel-come, theLibraries estab-lished positivefirst impres-sions that thestudents willcarry with themthrough theiruniversitycareers atWestern.

WILFRID LAURIER

UNIVERSITYA reorganization of the buildinghas transformed the main floor ofthe Laurier Library into the firstphase of an InformationCommons. Now an open andwelcoming space for learningand study, the area includes thelibrary's information desk, an IThelp desk, the university'sWriting Centre and an academicadvisor. The reorganization hasalso provided additional groupstudy rooms and casual seatingareas on other floors of the build-ing. To allow for these changes,the music and slides collectionshave been moved from the mainfloor to the fourth, and the paperperiodical collection has beenreduced to reflect the growingnumber of electronic titles. Thesecond phase of the InformationCommons will include a DigitalStudio, as well as task-specificlighting and furniture, and thetechnological support required tocomplete this new service.

The Laurier Information Commons isa cooperative project involving librarystaff, Physical Plant and Planning,and the office of the Vice-President:Academic.
