August 18th.
Backpack Sunday Our annual Backpack Sunday will be celebrated August 18, 2013 during both the 8 and 10:30am worship services. Children and youth from preschool to high school are encouraged to bring their backpacks with them to church. Please plan to attend this very special event as we bless our children and their teachers and support all staff in a successful and blessing-filled 2013-2014 school year.

It’s All about the Mission
I enjoy getting to know people – their likes and dislikes, strengths and
weaknesses, preferences and perceptions. I enjoy knowing what people do
for a living. After all, we spend a lot of time at work, nearly nine hours per
day. Some of us dread those nine hours and feel stuck where we’re at.
Maybe work is simply a means to an end for you – a way to survive and get
through life with bills paid and expenses covered. Maybe it’s all about
punching the clock, putting in your time, and getting paid.
Deep within us, however, is a desire to do more. Inside each person is a
Godly passion to go beyond a paycheck and make a real difference – to gain
fulfillment and meaning from knowing someone else’s life is better because
of our presence. Making a living is certainly admirable and honorable, and
in no way am I devaluing its importance. But there is a higher purpose to
claim, and it has everything to do with our mission as followers of Jesus.
The mission for all who claim to follow Christ is simple – to make disciples
for the transformation of the world. Jesus said as much in Matthew 28:16-
20 before he ascended to heaven. This mission defines us. It’s not merely
what we do; it’s who we are. As A. Wayne Schwab writes, “We say the
church has a mission. We get it wrong when we talk that way. The truth is
the mission has a church.” Allow that statement sink in…
When work becomes a place where we concern ourselves with the mission
of sharing the love and light of Jesus, then it becomes much more than
simply making ends meat. Even if we work in places where we are
discouraged or prevented from openly sharing our adoration for Christ, we
can proclaim our faith in other ways. St. Francis of Assisi is commonly
attributed with saying: “Share the gospel at all times; if necessary, use
words.” Love is a universal language, “against such there is no
law” (Galatians 5:23).
Focusing on the mission also helps our relationships, especially with those
who rub us the wrong way. My sister, Rachel, works at Wright-Patterson Air
Force Base along with her husband, Shaun. As we discussed the importance
of mission and teamwork, she relayed something profound that is embedded
within military culture: “In the military, it doesn’t matter whether you get
along; the only thing that matters is the mission.” When I’m focused on the
mission, I see people differently. I see more of others’ strengths, even
those with whom I disagree. I can see God more clearly in them.
This month we’ll be discussing the mission Jesus entrusts to us. We’ll be
challenged to center our lives around this sacred purpose Jesus has given,
and have plenty of opportunity to live it out. I know one thing - I am
looking forward to hearing the stories of how our lives have changed as a
result!
Your fellow missionary,
Rev. Kenneth A. Stewart, Pastor

From the Pantry The Food Pantry continues to graciously accept donations. We also continue to accept donations for the Olde Kitchen Shoppe. New or gently used kitchen items are welcome. The Food Pantry Committee extends best wishes for an enjoyable summer season!
Back to School Backpack Project The Worship Committee is asking for your help with our Backpack Project. We know there are many school children beginning their new school year without a backpack. We challenge the congregation to donate new or gently used backpacks for our pro-ject. Our goal is to collect at least 35 nice back-packs so that each of the 7 Piqua elementary buildings will have no less than 5 to give to children in need. The packs should be standard size, no wheels, and have sturdy fabric and zippers so they will last through the school year. Our annual Blessing of the Backpacks will be held on Sunday, August 18 and we would like to have the donated packs at church by that date so that they may be blessed as well. Please drop off your donations to the office. The backpacks will be distributed to each building before the first day so they may be available to the children as they are needed. Thank you in advance for your help! The Worship Committee
My Legacy Matters workshop My Legacy Matters, a free educational workshop, will be offered at Piqua YMCA Senior Center, 307 W High St, Piqua, on July 25th from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. You will learn how to take steps to identify your values, clarify your intentions for your legacy, and create a legacy plan. The workshop will be presented by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans representative Mark Reedy FIC. A complimentary lunch will be served. To register, call 927-778-1353 or email [email protected]. The registration deadline is Tuesday July 23rd . For more information, call 937-778-1353.
Hospitality is looking for help with the cafe. The sign up sheet is located on the round table in the narthex. All you have to do is show up about 30 minutes before Church, fix a little coffee, set up the cookie/doughnut tray and enjoy the wonderful con-servation. Your help would be greatly ap-preciated. Thank you for your support of the Café!
Theme Baskets
It’s getting to be that time of year again. There will be Itsy Bitsy Baskets to choose from with items we would enjoy having in order to complete the Theme Baskets. Do you have a gift that needs “regifted”? Please feel free to bring them to the church office-they will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
If anyone is interested in helping to assemble the baskets we would greatly appreciate the assistance! Call Rita Ash at 773-5157.

Thank you to all who donated items for our Military Packages. We sent out 6 boxes on June 17 (Andy Pearson just got home from Afghanistan and said no thanks for a box this time). The boxes were full of goodies and supplies & an art “Thank You” note from our childcare infant room. We appreciate our service personnel and it's a wonderful way to say “Thank you for your service” and to let them know we are thinking of them. Please continue to keep them in your prayers. Thanks again!
Thank You To the Entire Congregation,
You certainly brightened things up for me with the beautiful prayer shawl. I feel all your prayers and warmth which were put into it.
Thank you for such a lovely gift!
Sincerely,
Pat Pleiman
Annual Conference Highlights
The opening of the 44th West Ohio Annual Conference began with a laity session on Sunday evening. From the beginning, it was obvious this year’s conference would be different from those of the past eight years. Bishop Gregory Palmer was introduced and shared briefly with the group his passion for revisiting the Great Commission and told us that rather than have an evening of reports, our first meeting would focus on training. He left no doubt that his expectation of us is to get out into the trenches and make disciples for Christ.
Guest speakers/trainers for the evening were Jim and Jennifer Cowart from South Georgia. They started and continue to serve a church that boasts bringing to Christ over 2000 people during the past ten years. They asked each of us to think about how our churches and our districts are doing in this area. They suggested that most churches are “educated beyond their obedience,” meaning we know what to do but we aren’t doing it. Through scripture passages and quotes from famous people, the Cowarts talked about how God uses leaders (not just pastors and church officers), and how He uses our dreams to fulfill His.
Only seven recommendations were brought before the house. They included: 1) Council on Finance and Administration Recommendations for Calendar Year 2014; 2) The release on the reversal clause for Camp Sabroski; 3) Equitable Compensation; 4) Board of Pension and Health Benefits recommendations; 5) The Healthy Planet Project; 6) The establishment of a Conference Trial Advance Special for second-mile giving; and 7) A Petition for Conference Education. Recommendations 1-6 were adopted with little discussion; Number 7 was not adopted because it was considered a redundant expectation of the Bishop’s already defined job description. An 8th recommendation was withdrawn from consideration Sunday evening.
Other business discussed included the awarding of the Denman Awards, a Rules Committee Report, four Constitutional Amendments, corporate business, and the usual greetings from the East Ohio Conference Bishop, the presidents of United Theological Seminary and Methodist Theological Seminary of Ohio, and Lakeside Chautauqua. It was reported that overall giving in apportionments and for second-mile projects was up.
The celebration of ordination ceremony was rich with pageantry and with enthusiasm from those being ordained and from their families. As usual, Hoover Auditorium was beyond full. Retirees were honored, including the Rev. Dr. Arlys Fogt, but I recognized no names of those who had died.
Another “different” activity this year was the Bishop’s Bible Study. During the Sunday morning Lakeside Worship, Dr. Elaine Robinson from Oklahoma delivered the sermon and then spoke each of the three full days of Conference. She used multiple scriptures to encourage us in the ways God would have us behave. To me, she represented another change of Conference format that emphasized Bishop Palmer’s intent to move the West Ohio Conference even more into searching out the souls that don’t already have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and God our Father.
I passed Pastor Kenneth here and there, and we had dinner together one evening. I saw Ed Ellis, Joe Payne, Chip and Bev Koch, Jon Morgan, Jack Chalk, and some lay delegates I have known through the years. I looked for Lisa Ellison but understood she was not at Conference this year.
All Conference handouts and my notes are available in the Church’s office.

My Grandmother use to say, “The older you get the faster time flies”. It feels like yesterday was the last day of school and now we are talking about a new school year. I hope that you have taken
sometime this summer to read, play outside, take a bike ride, or go swimming. If you have not, don't wait! Summer will be over before we realize it. Save the video games for winter when it’s cold. Transportation letters have gone home to all the school age children. They are due back by the 31st. Preschool orientation will be Thursday, August 8 at 7:00 pm. The children have experienced so many great things this summer! It is because of the continued support of the church that we are so blessed to have a safe and loving environment to meet the needs of the children. Can you please help us out a little more by going to http://www.elabelsforeducation.com and choosing Greene Street Daycare/Preschool. This will electronically give us points for any purchases as well as the labels that you share with us. I hope that the rest of your summer is blessed with many sunshiny days. Director, Debbie Fraizer

June and July Dedications
Dear Greene Street Friends,
Jackson Area Ministries genuinely appreciates your most generous gift of money and seeds to our garden ministry. Both the quantity and quality of donations are indeed an answer to our prayers. The number of families wanting to grow vegetables etc. has been on the rise for several years. Your response is truly a significant contribution and will go a long way in helping us meet the expectations.
The faithfulness of individuals, congregations and seed companies is what has made this project successful. We got started in 1972 in Jackson County and the program has evolved into 19 county ministries throughout southeast Ohio.
Thank you very much for your support and may God richly bless your continues efforts.
Faithfully,
Rev. Bob Davis, Director
Dear Children of Greene Street UMC.,
Thank you for raising money in your 2013 Bucket Drive. Your love for Jesus shows through by your care for families in Piqua who are struggling to care for their children and pay their bills. At Piqua Compassion Network we are so grateful for the love you show to others. We are very proud of you.
Sincerely,
Ann Hoover
