Th e fundraising ef-forts for the Badlands Community Facility got another boost Tuesday morning. Th e Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce delivered its third $50,000 install-ment to the BCF Fund-raising Campaign. Th e donation is part of the Chamber’s $250,000 commitment to the fa-cility and two more $50,000 installments will be delivered in the next two years. “We will continue on with our annual pay-ments. Th e last one will be in 2014 to fulfi ll our $250,000 commitment,” said Heather Bitz, gen-eral manager of the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce. With the commit-ment, the Chamber of Commerce is one of the facility’s top sponsors. “We’re proud to help out in such a big way. We’re happy to see the facility up and opera-

tional. It’s a great new component to our com-munity. I’ve used it and it’s fantastic. We’re look-ing forward to using it next year when we host the 2013 Alberta Cham-bers of Commerce pro-vincial conference and policy session. We’re re-ally looking forward to having it and showing the facility off to Alber-ta,” said Bitz. BCF fundraising cam-paign chair Jeff Hall hopes the donation will help build the momen-tum needed to move for-ward. “It’s an amazing facil-ity and the usage is great. It’s something we need to continue to support,” said Hall. “It’s great to receive it [the donation]. Hopefully, when it’s vis-ible in the community like this, it will remind people the importance of fi nishing the fundrais-ing eff orts.” To date, the fund-raising campaign has received roughly $3.3 million in donations and commitments since campaigning began sev-

eral years ago. “To date, in excess of 60 per cent has been received. Th ere’s still a ways to go,” said Hall. Moving forward, the fundraising campaign will be pushing the Lega-cy Patio brick campaign, where residents can buy a brick and have a name inscribed on it, whether

it be theirs or in memo-ry of someone who has passed away. “Th ere’s going to be a community focus, es-pecially with our brick campaign. Th at’s the largest thing right now. We’ll probably see a few more events take shape over the next year and we’ll continue attempt-

ing to attract those larg-er donors as well,” said Hall. For more informa-tion on how to pur-chase a brick or donate to the BCF Fundraising Campaign, call Heather Little, marketing and events coordinator with the BCF, at 403-823-1333.

In the spirit of com-munity, residents will be scouring their neigh-bourhoods on Novem-ber 29 to help other neighbours at the an-nual food driver. Th is one night blitz is Th e Salvation Army’s major food drive and the donations that come in help supply the food bank for a good portion of the coming year. Th is week, Th e Sal-vation Army dropped hundreds of red gro-cery bags into the mail. Th ese bags are for resi-dents to pack and leave on their doorstep. Th is way volunteers are able

to easily identify dona-tions for the food drive, making collection that much easier. Th e blitz starts at 6 p.m. and volunteers will be combing Drumheller neighbourhoods from Nacmine to Rosedale. Th ere will also be volun-teers canvassing Mor-rin, Munson and Car-bon.To volunteer, simply head to one of the pre-determined muster points and head out to help. Organizer Heather Colberg is grateful for the support of volun-teers. It is not uncom-mon to see clubs, teams and organizations in the mix as they go door-

to-door. Volunteers are also needed to help sort and pack the donations. Once again, Drum-heller Co-op has al-lowed volunteers to use the former Liquidation World in Greentree Mall as a drop-off and sorting area. Colberg said they are still in great need of more vol-unteers on the evening of the food drive. Crews will muster at various locales throughout the valley before they head out. To learn more or to sign up as a volunteer, contact Heather Col-berg at 403-823-0811, 403-823-4242 or 403-823-2369.

Meeting points for November 29 Food Drive

Th ose interested in volunteering with the Salvation Army Food Drive are asked to please be at one of the meeting areas at 5:45 PM on NOVEMBER 29 so that crews can be collecting food by 6:00 PM. Tags will be

provided to show that you are with the Salvation Army. Your time is greatly appreciated and is making a great

impact and a profound diff erence.

While often in Alberta the weather is so fl eeting it is diffi cult to pin down, however last week’s blast of snow made it clear that winter driving season is upon the valley. With the winter comes poten-tially hazardous road conditions, and this has spurred concerns about the shape of the highways around Drumheller. Earlier this year Carillion Can-ada assumed the role of mainte-nance contractor for the area pro-vincial highways after winning the contract. Before this, Ledcor took care of the area highways. According to Tony Chelick operations manager for Alberta Transportation, the company has hired a number of new staff mem-bers and this was their fi rst winter test. “Th e fi rst few winter storms this year were quite severe and taxed Carillion’s local resources. Go-ing forward they are well capable of performing necessary winter highway maintenance,” said Che-lick. He said through GPS they are able to monitor where and when plows are on the road. Th is infor-mation is reviewed, and the work must be up to par. “Post winter storm reviews are conducted between Alberta

Transportation and our mainte-nance contractors to discuss is-sues such as how and when the plow fl eet was deployed and how sanding and plowing was con-ducted. All work performed must meet provincial standards,” he said. Chelick adds that Carillion is a long standing company with a proven track record. He also says during the winter safety also fall with the drivers. “Drivers must keep in mind that winter in Alberta is very unpre-dictable. Provincially, the mainte-

nance contractors do a very good job maintaining our highways in the winter overall, but driver judgment still comes into play to determine if travelling on a par-ticular highway at any given time is safe for them to do so,” he said. Specifi c concerns regard-ing highway maintenance in the Drumheller area may be directed to Carillion Canada Inc. at 1-800-390-2242 or Tony Chelick, Al-berta Transportation operations manager in Hanna at 403-854-5550, toll free by fi rst dialing 310-0000.

Tony Chelick, operations manager for Alberta Transportation, says post winter storm reviews are conducted between Alberta Transportation and mainte-nance contractors to discuss issues such as how and when the plow fl eet was deployed and how sanding and plowing was conducted.

Game Day Snacks

It’s pretty hard to get through a grey cup game without some fabulous foods to add to the excitement!I thought I’d choose a good old stand-by that is always a hit. It’s a recipe everyone wants to take home with them. That is- if they don’t already have it! I think this is the most requested one I own – I’m always getting calls from people who end up craving it on the spur of the moment. Everyone has their own little variations and it’s a recipe you will hone to your own liking after making it a few times, too. Following my version of the recipe, I will give some simpler variations with less ingredients. I always go overboard on cheeses and sauces – this dip is fi ne with less. I didn’t give measurements for the ingredients. This is a dish you simply go with what looks good to you and it will work out just the way you like it.

Buff alo Chicken Dip

Spread a package of cream cheese on the bottom of a baking dish. (I use a 9” round). Next, you can use leftover chicken, cooked breasts, canned chicken, rotisserie chicken, packaged chicken breast pieces from the deli – endless possibilities. I like to marinate the chicken in hot sauce fi rst, but if you are making this on the spot, simply layer the chicken on the cream cheese then pour the hot sauce over. I use the Frank’s Buff alo wing sauce, but again – endless possibilities when it comes to the hot sauces that are out there now, too. Now, spread a layer of grated mozzarella cheese (or Monterrey Jack, Colby or Italian blend)

Pour Blue Cheese dressing over that. Drizzle a little more hot sauce, sprinkle with grated cheddar cheese, then pour Ranch Dressing over. A little more hot sauce and fi nally, crumbled blue cheese. Bake at 350 for about ½ hour. Serve crackers, tortilla scoops and celery sticks to dip.

Variations - use only cheddar (or one particular type) cheese and Ranch dressing. - melt all the ingredients together on stove top, pour into casserole and bake.- cook in a slow cooker.- use lighter cheese and yogurt to make a healthier version.

This is the next best thing to eating Buff alo hot wings while keeping your hands clean at the same time!

Enjoy the game…and the snacks!

Who are you? is a weekly feature that profi les various professional Drumhellerites. Know someone who we should get to know better?

Please give us a call at 403-823-2580, fax at 403-823-3864 or email [email protected]

WHOare you?are you?Lyle Rowe

Age: 55.Employer: Badlands Community Facility.Occupation: I design and plan recreation and fi tness programs. How long have you lived in the area? I was born in Drumheller, moved away for several years, and then moved to Michichi in 2006.What do you like most about the area? Th e cohe-siveness of the communities around here .What is the coolest place you’ve travelled to? I went to the Oregon coast in 1990 and 1991 on a bik-ing trip. It’s beautiful and really peaceful. Th ere’s a book in the library about the top biking trips in the world and I’ve done four of them so far.If you could travel through time, when and where would you go? Back to the 1940’s and 1950’s. From the stories my grandparents told, it seemed like communities back then were really close-knit. Con-ceptually it’s appealing, but probably not very glam-orous.What three things would you bring to a deserted island? Some matches, an axe, and I think I’ve be-come too attached to my iPhone. What is one thing you could eat for the rest of your life? My wife’s lasagna.Favourite movies/tv shows? Th e Mob Doctor is very interesting. I really like Forrest Gump. What’s on your playlist these days? It’s pretty consistent. George Straight, Hey Romeo, Jason Blaine, and Johnny Reid.

Favourite sports? I play hockey usually once a week. I usually watch hockey on TV, but since the strike I’ve found I’m a lot more keen about Canadian football. I also love the winter Olympics.Any favourite teams? Th e Calgary Flames, Red Deer Rebels, and Drumheller Dragons. What would you do with $1 million? Cover the deck on our house, build a one- or two-car garage, help support the community, and go travelling. What superpower would you want? Invisibility.Any words of wisdom? In the words of Red Green, keep your stick on the ice.

Sudoku Solution Last Week's Crossword Solution

SudokuHere’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Dynos season wraps up

Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Th e courts at Drumheller Valley Secondary School will stand silent for the rest of the year after the Dynos senior girls volleyball team’s season ended this past weekend.

Th e Dynos travelled to Brooks to compete to be named zone champions and earn a spot in provincials. Th e girls started off the tourna-ment strong, winning their fi rst two matches against Banff and Holy Cross Schools. Th eir third match they lost against the eventual tour-nament winners, Strathcona High School. Th e following morning they lost to Brooks, which put the team in a tie for third place. Th e tiebreaker, for third place overall at zones, was against Holy Cross. Th e match consisted of a single game. “Th e girls came out on fi re and made light work of that game. Th ey showed they were ca-pable of playing at a much higher level,” said Heather Colberg, assistant coach of the Dynos. Th e fi nal match for the girls came against a squad from Black Diamond. Th e Dynos won the fi rst game of the match 24-18 and then lost the second by a narrow 26-24. Th e Dynos hopes came down to one game, but they could not hold on and lost. Th eir season came to and end. Th e Dynos had a challenging season, but qual-ifi ed for zones after placing third in regionals the previous weekend. Th e coaches were proud of the team’s performance. “Th e past two weekends they’ve played the best they have all season. We’re really proud of how the girls played at regionals and zones. Th ey left everything on the court,” said Dawn Sullivan, head coach of the Dynos. For a few of the members of the Dynos, this is their fi nal year, as they graduate in the coming spring. “Our only wish is that this group would have been together longer as you came together so well in the past few weeks,” said Colberg. “We have never been more proud to say we coached them in their grade 12 year. We saw an amazing amount of growth, leadership and teamwork.”

The DVSS senior girls volleyball team’s season came to a close this past weekend at zones in Brooks. The team had a strong tournament, but was defeated in the play-offs by Black Diamond. The Dynos earned a spot at zones after placing third in regionals the previous weekend.

RCMP steps up check stops during holiday season

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins says while the season to be merry is impending, he hopes residents also make sure they are safe behind the wheel. Th e Christmas season is no longer the peak time for casualty collisions involving alcohol but, it is a time of celebration, and that adds to the possibility of increased drinking and driving. “We are getting in to that time period where Christmas parties and celebrations are becoming the norm and we can’t say enough about people plan-ning their way home,” said Hopkins. He said this means making sure revelers have a way home, whether it be a designated driver, having someone sober picking you up or taking a cab for example. Drivers who may think about getting behind the wheel after attending a celebration have another consideration. Alberta has strengthened its impaired driving rules. “Bear in mind now a reading from a roadside screening devise has more consequences. It will mean a seizure if you are caught over 0.05 (blood al-cohol content). Last year it meant losing your license for 24 hours. Now you are going to lose your license and you are going to lose your vehicle for three days for the fi rst time,” said Hopkins. He said with time and circumstance permitting the Drumheller RCMP will be conducting more check stops. “In some detachments they will say ‘do one check stop a night,’ I don’t go to that extent, I tell them that check stop will be made when time and circumstanc-es permit…there will be an increase,” said Hopkins.

Chips with Salsaa little spicybut always welcome

A couple of weeks ago, a car salesman (who shall remain nameless, to protect his innocence), called me, asking what colour car I would like. I had made mention of a certain model, and he said that the deal-ership was putting in an order for one. He called me because they were ordering it in black, and he wanted to know what colour I would prefer. I told him not to order anything specifi cally for me, but that I thought that red was a good colour. I’d been reading in the car magazines about this car, and everyone wrote glow-ingly in their praise. Th ere was something however that bothered me about the vehicle. After the phone call, I went online to get the ad-dress of the vehicle manufacturer’s corporate head-quarters. As I said, I had read several car magazines, and all had good reviews. I however, noticed a couple of things that did not sit well with me. First , the gas mileage. Th e car is EPA rated at 23 city/ 32 highway, with a range of about 360 miles. (For those of you who would chide me for not using metric, the next time you ask about fuel economy, just say “kilometerage”, go ahead. I dare you.) Th e car that I am driving right now is EPA rated at 24 city/ 30 highway, with a range of 396 miles, and is 10 years old. With the new model, I would lose 1 mpg around town (where I do most of my driving), and gain only 2 mpg on the highway. But here’s the kicker, the new model is bigger in ev-ery dimension, with more horsepower. Th e only thing that was made smaller was the fuel tank! My car-13.2 gallons (50 liters), the new model-12.2 gallons Th at is what prompted my call to headquarters. I e-mailed corporate headquarters seeking the ra-tionale behind downsizing the fuel tank. I got the stan-dard reply one gets from a large corporation: “Th ank you for your interest, we appreciate our customers ef-forts to contact us, blah, blah, blah”. I wrote back that I had not received a satisfactory answer to my inquiry. A reply came from a diff erent person, in a diff erent department: “Th e needs of our customers are para-mount, and anything we can do in the future, please contact us”. For a third time I wrote, asking if anyone, in any of their offi ces had any idea why the gas tank was made smaller. Of course I got nothing but more of the same. I fi nally wrote back, saying that I would ask the people at MOTOR TREND magazine, or CAR and DRIVER, that they would know, or at least make an eff ort to fi nd out, and that when I found out, I would e-mail corporate headquarters with the answer.

Th e stands were packed at the Drum-heller and Morrin arenas when teams from all over the province came down to play in the Charmont Memorial Tournament this past weekend. Two teams from Drumheller, the Yavis and Encana atom Rap-tors, rose to the top of their respective pools in the tournament. Th e Encana Raptors, who played in the B pool ended the weekend as champions. “Th ey won the B fi -nal 5-4 over Okotoks on Sunday. It was a back and forth tension fi lled game,” said Paul Richard, head coach of the Encana Raptors.

“Both sides were really happy the teams were very competitive and it wasn’t a blow out either way. It came down to the last two minutes of the game. Th e kids tried re-ally hard. Th e coaches are proud of their eff ort.” Th e Encana Raptors started off the tourna-ment on the right foot, winning their fi rst game. Th ey ran into trouble and lost their next two, but managed to bounce back and earn a spot in the fi nals. Th e Yavis Raptors made it to the A fi -nals, but were bested by a tough squad from Wetaskawin. “It went very well. We made it to the A fi nals, but lost a close game,” said Tony Pliva, head coach of the Yavis Rap-

tors. “Th ey are in a dif-ferent association than we are. It’s sometimes diffi cult to get teams of the same caliber and they were a little better.” Th e Yavis Raptors opened the tournament with a big win, but lost their second game. Th ey then battled back to make it to the fi nals. For the Yavis Rap-tors the weekend was a chance to bond. “It was a really good team bonding week-end. Th e kids played fi ve games under 36 hours and spent a lot of time together. Th ey really came together. It was the best thing that could happen,” said Pliva. Th e tournament was created in memory of Chris and his son John Charmont who were

killed in an explosion at a resort hotel in Mexico in November 2010. Chris helped coach and man-age minor hockey teams and John was an atom player when he passed away. Many of those who participated in the tour-nament knew Chris and John. “My son for one was

in John’s class when the accident happened. We played hockey with him, I worked with Chris as an assistant coach when he was a manager,” said Pliva. “A lot of the kids were the same age as John.” Richard remembers coaching with the two. “I knew John and Chris quite well. I coached

with Chris for a number of years and I coached John in hockey and la-crosse. Th is tournament touches me in a diff erent way than maybe other people. I knew the kind of kid John was and why he played, so I wanted the kids to put in the ef-fort John would. He was always smiling, but every shift he would give it his all,” said Richard. “I want the kids to have the same attitude when they go to the rink.”
