John Shoff President of the DinoArt Project and Mayor Terry Yemen cozy up to the newest dinosaur addition which was unveiled down-town on May 24 The DinoBench has been a collaborative effort by the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce and its DinoArts committee This project was made possible by the committee and its volunteers the Town of Drumheller and donors who supported the committee Funds raised last year enabled the committee to restore and repaint a mural along with several cement dinosaur sculptures around town and to bring this new dinosaur project to life Through ongoing fundraising the DinoArts committee hopes to install a proj-ect like this one on a yearly basis

Itrsquos sure to be a night of fun on Friday June 1 at the Badlands Community Fa-cility when the Rotary Cub hosts ldquoVegas Nightrdquo ldquoWe hope itrsquos a festive at-mosphere and to bring something that normally wouldnrsquot be in Drumhellerrdquo said Scott Kuntz a mem-ber of Drumhellerrsquos Rotary Club who is helping to or-ganize the event Th is is one of the various fundraisers the Rotary Club hosts including Th e White Elephant Sale and Th e Ra-dio Auction Funds raised will be donated to the St Anthonyrsquos School play-ground Attendees will be given funny money upon arrival to which they can take their chances playing crown and anchor black jack and rou-lette Guests will also be given coupons which will enable them to bid on prize packages donated by local businesses the Flames the Phil Harmonic Orchestra

and many more Food and drink will also be available to accompany the festive evening At the end of the night a draw will be made for a grand prize of a $1000 trav-el voucher for anywhere in

the world All ticket buyerrsquos names will be thrown in the hat and one lucky guest will walk away with the fantastic prize donated by Hi-Way 9 Express

Like it or not (Irsquom guessing that most like it) Spring is fi nally here One harbinger is the East Coulee SpringFest I mean they couldnrsquot really call it that if it werenrsquot really Spring could they Irsquove written about SpringFest before (too many remember last yearrsquos griping) but I really can say nothing negative about the day except for the weather SpringFest is usually held in April and although that puts us several weeks into Spring the weather at that time of year can be something of a crap shoot And if you think neither God nor Mother Nature has a sense of humor just go ahead and make plans for a big indoor outdoor party for mid April Someone for some reason decided that SpringFest this year should be held in May Well what a diff erence a couple or three weeks can make Th e skies were clear the thermometer was riding high and there was just the slightest zephyr moving the air It was no less than a stunning day for something called SpringFest And the people turned out in droves to enjoy some very good musical performances in a variety of genres It seemed that every venue at one time or another was standing room only And if you hap-pened to saunter down to the local saloon for a ldquocold onerdquo yoursquod even fi nd music there but good luck fi nding a place to ldquoplant itrdquo Yes SpringFest 2012 was a resounding success with the weath-er the musicians and all those in attendance cooperating to make a very enjoyable day Th e people especially they are laid back pleasant friendly and just out for a nice day Sure therersquos beer aplenty but no one gets drunk or out of hand People are just glad to be there Maybe theyrsquore just happy that Spring really is here Congratulations to the organizers

Th ere is still a ways to go to meeting the fundraising goal for the Badlands Community Facil-ity Th e Badlands Community Fa-cility Fundraising Cabinet hosted a meeting with donors and po-tential donors for the Badlands Community Facility on Wednes-

day afternoon Th e Cabinet Co-chair Jeff Hall announced they have raised $3175162 towards construction of the Badlands Community Facility Th e fund-raising portion of the budget is approximately $6 million for the fi rst phase which is now com-plete ldquoWe are very proud of those members of our community

generous companies and our lo-cal service clubs and organiza-tions who have made a statement of commitment to this commu-nity with their giftrdquo said Hall in

a press release Th is great new facility makes me proud of the work the volunteer team has achieved so farrdquo Fundraising for the Badlands

Community Facility started with a bang In November of 2009 fundraisers hosted the Calgary Flames Alumni to a charity game By March 2010 Th e Mail report-ed they had $17 million commit-ted In November of 2010 the Town contracted Nine Lions Develop-ment Consulting for $233000 to work on fundraising At the time Hall said the hiring costs were all inclusive for both phases of the Badlands Community Facil-ity He is happy with the perfor-mance of the company He does clarify their role ldquoNine Lions was never engaged to fi nd leads for us they were en-gaged to help us with the whole process said Hall Scott Decksheimer of Nine Lions was at the event Th ursday but did not address those gath-ered Mr Hall also took the opportu-nity to launch the next phase of the fundraising campaign ldquoTh ere are many ways to get in-volved make a gift directly to the BCF holding an event or direct-ing funds from a current event to support the BCF or purchase one or more bricks on the new Legacy Donor Patio and have it inscribed with something mean-ingful for yourdquo Th e Legacy Patio will be along the walking trail directly behind the Badlands Community Facil-ity to celebrate donors who make a contribution of $250 $500 or $1000 to the campaign Where we are sitting as a whole I think is really good for a community this sizerdquo said Hall ldquoI think we are happy with where we are right now given the mag-nitude of the donations we have received and now that we can enter the community phase of the campaign hopefully that momentum will continue to buildrdquo

Itrsquos another big year for the Badlands Passion Play Crews have been busy ex-panding the theatre and constructing the new fo-rum in anticipation of the 2012 Passion Play produc-tion Th e fi rst thing visitors will notice at the site is the Passion Play using the old ski quonset as a stage shop Th e Passion Play has been renovating the lodge base-ment and will be using it as offi ce space and a green room for its volunteers Th e use of the quonset and lodge basement were made possible after the ski hill closed ldquoFor us to have secured it and now use it thatrsquos fan-tasticrdquo said Passion Play president Vance Neudorf ldquoItrsquos facilitated our expan-sionrdquo Th e Passion Play co-owned the area at the base of the hill which included the lift station quonset and a considerable amount of parking Th e Passion Play bought the ski hillrsquos share of the land earlier this year When walking towards the theatre visitors will see an entirely brand new structure the forum Th e forum is a small the-atre space and could be used throughout the year Neudorf indicated the fo-rum could be used for a number of events such as concerts or plays Plans are to eventually put a roof over the forum

and its seating making it usable rain or shine ldquoWe want to continue to expand and enlarge to ac-commodate a more con-stant stream of visitorsrdquo said Neudorf Between the forum and the main stage there will be a marketplace Th e main theatre has un-dergone a few big changes

as well Th e size stage has been tripled in particular the grassy area on stage right has been extended and raised allowing actors

to move to diff erent parts of the stage unseen Using a larger stage is made possible though the sound system installed in the theatre Th e improvements have been made possible through the Rural Alberta Development Fund Grant and donations ldquoItrsquos very much a com-munity eff ortrdquo said Neu-dorf ldquoTh e support we have received has been over-whelmingrdquo One of the ways people have been donating is by helping to purchase the concrete blocks that make up the retaining walls in the forum and in the new back-stage area Th e blocks are made by

LPR Concrete using recy-cled or excess material Th e Passion Play ran a program whereby community mem-bers could buy blocks for the construction Roughly 270 blocks were donated It is the community that Neudorf credits for making the play possible ldquoCommunity goodwill is the support that keeps us goingrdquo said Neudorf ldquoWe couldnrsquot survive without the people because itrsquos such a massive undertaking Th e 2012 Passion Play be-gins on July 13 For tickets and information visit wwwcanadianpassionplaycom

The Drumheller Valley is a unique scenic valley created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water

About 65 million years ago dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area Today the fossil-ized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area

The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree who in 1902 built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district

It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911 In 1913 the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine) Midlandvale Rosedale East Coulee Wayne and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things

Today the Town of Drumheller relies on agriculture gov-ernment services oil and gas and tourism for its economic prosperity

You never forget your fi rst and Darren Tanke still has his As a young man coming to the Dinosaur Valley to help build the Royal Tyrrell Museum in the early 80s he had a small apartment and a bike Eventually he had the opportunity to pick up this 1955 Buick Special Riviera his fi rst car The four-door Riviera was a new addition in 1955 and is powered by a 264 Nailhead Buickrsquos fi rst V-8 to replace its Straight -8 power plants

He drove it for a few years and for many in the valley Tanke said seeing his car on the road was a harbinger of spring He bought the car in original condition and he has since had it repainted a couple times It sat for about 11 years and when fi nances permitted he had the engine rebuilt and now it is back on the road He is planning to show it at this yearrsquos Boogie in the Badlands this Saturday at Drumheller Chrysler

(Papa) Lorne passed away suddenly Monday May 21st 2012 in Prince Albert Saskatchewan while he and JoAnn were enjoying a long weekend with their family Lorne was born in Trail BC on November 26th 1948 and was predeceased by his father Wallace Cole his mother Audrey Harwood and his brothers Jim and Dan Cole Lorne retired early in his career and in life but he never stopped working Every day he found someone to help or something to work on As a dedicated father Lornersquos presence lives on in his daughtersrsquo spirits knowledge and even their physical surroundings the garage he helped wire the shed and fence he helped build the pictures he hung and the shelves he built Lorne was a wealth of knowledge he was always able to offer valuable advice followed by a helping hand As a valued Rotarian Lorne will be remembered for his hard work and his heart When you drive by a sign for the coal mine put up by the Rotary yoursquoll see evidence Lorne would do whatever was needed with a sense of purpose Lorne and JoAnn spent their winters in Yuma square dancing and playing golf and poker with their friends The rest of the year was spent visiting family frequenting Stage West participating in Rotary activities camping more square dancing and constant home improvements and car tinkering Lorne has attained so many great achievements during his lifetime holding a Master Electrician ticket and working as a controls specialist as owner and founder of Colersquos Controls He even held a pilotrsquos licence and a real estate license Lorne went after what he wanted and was living proof that success is dependent on effort Lorne will be sadly missed by his wife JoAnn Werschler (nee McKenzie) his two sisters Heather Thompson and Debbie Newbury and their families his two daughters and their families Sheri amp Murray Gunville and Tanya amp Dale McMaster His sense of humour and love for life lives on in his 5 grandchildren Kelsey amp Hailey Gunville in Prince Albert and Colton Elle amp Chael McMaster in Calgary Memorial services will be held Monday May 28th 2012 at the Badlands Community Facility at 200 pm If so desired donations in lieu of fl owers can be made to the Drumheller Salvation Army at Box 3097 Drumheller AB T0J 0Y0 21c

In Canada many families simply cannot aff ord to enrol their children in any organized sports or extra rec-reational activities Participating in organized sports and recreational activities off er chil-dren life lessons such as sportsman-ship teamwork determination and tenacity builds leadership skills and boosts self esteem However despite fi nancial hard-ships many Canadian parents are ex-periencing when there is a will there is a way Th e Canadian Tire Jumpstart pro-gram has assisted 439383 children as of March 30 to participate in sports programs and are a major sponsor of the KidSport program KidSport was initially created in British Columbia in 1993 and was aiming to ensure kids got to play the sports they love without letting fi -nancial barriers deter them

ldquoTh ese funds help a great deal and it is nice they stay in the communityrdquo said Dave Watson chairperson of Drumheller KidSport Watson said they receive around $5000 per year from funds raised by Canadian Tirersquos Jumpstart Day but it can vary from year to year He said this money is a fairly big portion of the $7000-$9000 that gets distrib-uted to around 60-90 children in Drumheller and area By covering the cost of registra-tion equipment and transportation children are given the chance to par-ticipate in recreational activities that otherwise would have been out of the question Jumpstart Day will take place on Saturday May 26 Th e public will be given the chance to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball at Canadian Tire Markrsquos Canadian Tire Gas and Pita Pit locations with all proceeds going to Canadian Tire Jumpstart

Summer is a great time for ice cream and banana splits but what about hot dogs or wiener splits

To make this fun dish use the photo as a guide

I cooked then cooled the wieners fi rst You can slice the wiener lengthwise cutting not quite through and then opening it up book-style Or you can also just leave it whole (I thought the salad scoops would sit better on a sliced one)

Over top of the wiener place three scoops of salads One of potato salad one of coleslaw and one of macaroni salad

I used a piping bag and large star tip to pipe mashed potato on top of the scoops to resemble whipped cream

Drizzle some steak sauce (to resemble chocolate sauce) over the potato salad scoop mustard (appearing as butterscotch) over the macaroni scoop and set a cherry tomato on top of the coleslaw You might also use relish as garnish or a dill pickle spear along side

Th e senior high fl oor hockey intra-mural champs are excited to go head to head with members of the Drum-heller RCMP detachment to possibly claim another victory On Wednesday May 30 the two teams will battle one another for the win in a fl oor hockey game which will be held in the gymnasium at Drum-heller Valley Secondary School For fellow classes to take in the match they must raise $20 which will be donated to Th e Salvation Army Food Bank ldquoWe just try to get out as much as possible with the kids to have fun and make it worthwhilerdquo said Constable Tom Dobrich who helped organize the fi rst event in December 2010 and will be play-ing in the second game come May 30

ldquoTh e students had a blast playing the RCMP last year and the students are looking forward to it againrdquo said Jeff Messom Athletic Director of DVSS Messom said last year the student body eager to watch the game raised approximately $300 which was do-nated to the food bank Th e RCMP donated $100 last year and will be making another donation

John Shoff President of the DinoArt Project and Mayor Terry Yemen cozy up to the newest dinosaur addition which was unveiled down-town on May 24 The DinoBench has been a collaborative effort by the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce and its DinoArts committee This project was made possible by the committee and its volunteers the Town of Drumheller and donors who supported the committee Funds raised last year enabled the committee to restore and repaint a mural along with several cement dinosaur sculptures around town and to bring this new dinosaur project to life Through ongoing fundraising the DinoArts committee hopes to install a proj-ect like this one on a yearly basis
