Th e Town of Drum-heller this month be-gan periodic trapping of cats in the down-town core in response to complaints. Th e Town of Drum-heller made mention to the program on its Facebook page on De-cember 4. “Th ere are some busi-nesses that have cats hanging around,” said community enforce-ment supervisor Greg Peters. He said so far they have trapped one feral cat and it was relocated to a rural residence to live as a barn cat. He said they are plac-ing the traps only dur-ing the day so if an ani-mal is caught it is not exposed excessively to the elements. He said while feral cats can be a problem, not all the felines hang-ing around downtown are wild. “Some of them are really friendly and well fed, these are domes-tic cats,” he said add-ing that in one instance a cat was so “well fed” it couldn’t fi t into the trap. “So keeping with the new Responsible Pet Owner Bylaw draft I am completing we want to stress to people to keep cats at home,” said Pe-ters. “I know cats want to go outside, but there are a lot of well-fed friendly cats just walk-

ing our streets.” He understands it is a controversial sub-ject and recognizes the usefulness of feral cars with pest control, and often at night he would see them catching mice. But he also un-derstands they can be nuisance. Keeping cats at home is also the best way to keep cats safe. Peters says if any resi-dents have questions or feedback to feel free to contact community en-forcement at 403-823-1363.

Mayor’s Christmas MessageWell, it is hard to believe that it is already time to say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. What a great year we have had here in Drumheller. I would like to recognize Drumheller’s committed and dedicated Town staff , active volunteers, community groups and organizations who work tirelessly during the year to make our community a better place to live. This season, let us reach out to those who might need that extra helping hand. On behalf of myself and Council, I extend warmest wishes for a safe and wonderful holiday season.

Public Utility InformationOn December 17th, Council passed fi rst reading for Bylaw 17-12 regarding the utility rates.  The Bylaw provides for a 3% increase to the base rates as well as the consumption rate for the water utility only.  In addition to this increase, there will be a $1 levy as an Infrastructure Investment Surcharge, and is directly

added to the Capital Reserves.  There is no increase in the WasteWater utility rates for 2013. A combined water and wastewater utility bill using a consumption of 19 cubic meters would cost $77.96 in December and $80.04 in January, an increase of $2.08 or 2.66%.

The Town of Drumheller will be celebrating our 100th Anniversary in 2013. The actual date of our anniversary is May 15th.The committee has developed a logo for the anniversary and we would like everyone to have the opportunity to use this logo for themselves, ie. Team badges, letterhead, swag, etc. The business world may want to mark a sale as a”

Centennial Sale” or incorporate the idea of 100 or multiples thereof in the marketing of their products. We would like to have everyone to try to celebrate this special 100th anniversary of the Town in some way; privately or very publicly, whatever suits you and your family/company best. For additional information call Paul Salvatore at 403-823-1324

Recent fatal collisions involving impaired drivers highlight the horrifi c con-sequences of drinking and driving. In the wake of several deadly crashes occur-ring on Alberta highways in December, Alberta’s RCMP and Sheriff s In-tegrated Traffi c Units (ITUs) are continuing to remind the public that impaired driving is illegal and potentially deadly. To ensure the safety of all highway users, offi cers will be continuing with the Al-berta Checkstop program throughout the holiday season. Superintendent Howard Eaton, Offi cer in Charge K Division Traffi c Services, says Most Albertans don’t drink and drive, but it ap-pears that some people just don’t get it! Th ese people continue to drive with a total disregard for the safety of others sharing the road, getting involved in collisions, injuring and killing innocent people. When a loved one is killed because of an im-paired driver, it is abso-lutely senseless and espe-cially devastating during

the holidays. We all need to work together to stop this from happening. James Stiles, Superin-tendent, Deputy Director, Sheriff Traffi c Operations North, further added, “During the holiday season everyone needs to do their part in keeping the roads safe. Know your own lim-its, don’t let friends drink and drive, don’t get into a vehicle with a driver who has been drinking, and report any suspected im-paired driver. Our goal is to have everyone arrive safely at their destination.” RCMP Sergeant Brian Topham, a supervisor at the Integrated Traffi c Unit in the Edmonton region says “We’ve had a busy two weekends, arresting and charging 15 individuals for impaired driving and driving over .08 BAC since December 1st. Th at’s 15 people in four nights! Our members throughout the province will continue to aggressively seek out impaired drivers and get them off the road during the holiday season in hope that we all enjoy a safe hol-iday.” As part of Alberta’s Traffi c Safety Plan, the Integrated Traffi c Units provide an extra focus on

impaired driving through-out the month of Decem-ber. During this time, Al-berta Checkstops will be conducted at locations throughout the province. If someone observes a suspected impaired driver, call 911 to report the ve-hicle description, license

plate, location and direc-tion of travel to the 911 operator to allow offi cers to attempt to locate and stop the vehicle. Ensure that the call is made from a safe location and that cell phones are only used in a hands-free mode of operation.

Alcohol can make highways deadly

Impaired Driving Statistics for Alberta

• As the severity of the collision increases, so does the likelihood that the collision involved a drinking driver.• On average in Alberta, one in fi ve drivers in-volved in fatal collisions had been drinking prior to the collision.• Males between 18 and 24 years of age are most likely to have been drinking before a collision.• Most casualty collisions involving alcohol occur on the weekends.• The most likely time for these collisions is be-tween 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.• Drinking and driving collisions are often associ-ated with long weekends.• Drinking and driving imposes enormous costs on our society. The true cost of drinking and driv-ing is the victims. From 2006 to 2010, 569 people were killed and 8,530 people were injured in al-cohol-related collisions. In 2010 alone, 96 people were killed and 1,384 were injured.

Th is is for all the Clark W. Griswold’s in the world. Th ose who have the determination to brighten everyone’s Christmas as much as their homes. D u r i n g a drive through Drum-heller a friend suddenly exclaimed, “look at that house!” I glanced over and saw a bea-con of light in the dark-ness, a house and lawn so c o m p l e t e l y covered in C h r i s t m a s lights and decorations I would haz-ard a guess that planes o v e r h e a d could make it out. We stopped and could only marvel in awe of the sight before us. After-wards, we drove around and found other houses that strive to create il-luminated works of art out of their homes each Christmas. For Paul Ainscough, it is his grandchildren that inspire him to spend a whole day outside in the cold assembling the il-luminating display of Christmas cheer in his front yard. “We’ve got seven grandchildren. Th ey’re kind of used to it by now and they look forward to us doing something ev-

ery year,” said Ainscough. Th e Ainscough lawn is a sight to behold. It is fi lled, with nary a bare inch to be found, with wire animals, snowmen, and Santa all lit up in dif-ferent hues. In the back yard, stand two huge in-fl atable Christmas deco-rations. “Sometimes people walking by stop and you

can see them looking at what we put out,” said Ainscough. For others, it just isn’t Christmas without lights. “We decorate every year. Christmas is a spe-cial time, always has been for our family. We just like decorating,” said Nick Sereda. Putting together such a brilliant display takes a serious investment of time. “It usually takes a full day to put everything together. We try to do it in November when it’s nicer,” said Ainscough.

Over the years though, some have observed things are a but dimmer than in the past. “I remember there was a lot more going on. I don’t know if it is the extra cost of electricity, but growing up, there seemed to be a lot more,” said Sereda. Ainscough said he doesn’t see much of a

spike in his power use, certainly not to the extent where the meter is spin-ning out of control. “ W e don’t see much of an increase. We use LED’s, they really work to keep the power down,” said Ainscough. O t h e r s worry about vandalism. “ L a s t year was hard,

because a lot of people in the area got hit by van-dalism. We had two blow ups [decortions] and a few other things dam-aged,” said Ainscough. However, Ainscough and Sereda won’t let those tribulations won’t snow on their Christmas spirit. “It’s fun to see. I’ll be going out soon to see all the decorations. It’s nice to drive around and take a look at what people do,” said Ainscough. “As long as we can do it, we can do it.”

Sudoku Solution Last Week's Crossword Solution

SudokuHere’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

but always welcome

Tuesday is Christmas Day, the day of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. Funny thing is, in that part of the world where His birth took place, the Middle East, there hasn’t been any real peace since He was born. Does that say something about the Prince of Peace, or does it convict us humans? Is He the Prince, not so much of Peace, but of dis-cord instead? Did He come to bring us love and salvation, or hate and damnation? Today we have politicians who commit themselves, and all the resourc-es (your tax dollars) they can muster, to putting an end to poverty. Th ey are somehow of the misconception that if only more money was put into more programs, then poverty could be eradicated. Allow me a line I read in a book somewhere: “Th e poor you shall always have with you, and you can help them anytime you want”. Alright, the book was the Bible, Gospel of Mark, Chapter 14, verse 7 and the speaker was no less an authority than Jesus Christ. Now when Jesus Christ tells you that we will always have the poor with us, you’d better take note. And some politician is go-ing to put an end to poverty? I think not. Read your Bible. For all the bil-lions spent on welfare programs over the years, you would think by now that we would know we are incapable of eradicating poverty. Allow me another line I read somewhere: “Welfare’s purpose should be to eliminate, as far as possible, the need for its own existence”. Th e simple logic of that statement is truly beautiful. It’s from the Los Angeles Times, 1970, and the speaker was Ronald Reagan. Th is man knew his Bible. Tuesday is Christmas Day. Jesus was born on this day, not into a wealthy family, and a comfortable home, but to a carpenter, and in a stable. He never knew great wealth, and anything He did have, He shared with oth-ers. He taught us to share, and to give; that the man next to you was as good as you; that the lowliest among us would be fi rst, and those who placed themselves fi rst, would be made last. (No qeue jumping, not even for politicians). When something bad happens to someone, you often hear the lament, “Why me Lord, why have you let me be so affl icted?” We always want to know why a loving God would let calamity befall us. Yet how often do you hear the same thing from the guy who wins $20 million on 6/49? “Why me Lord, what have I done to deserve this?” You win millions of dollars, and the Lord looks down, thinking “Well kid, what good deeds are you going to do with all your new wealth?” “If you ask me…Oh who am I kidding, how many times has anybody ever asked me?” “Still, I must have faith in them, My Son was willing to become one of them, and die for them, so there’s got to be something there.” From me to you, I wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas, and may God bless you all.

Th e Drumheller Dragons are poised to end on a high note before the holiday break after winning their second last game before Christmas. On Tuesday, the team was in Calgary to rein in the Mustangs. Th e Dragons came away with a 2-1 win. Th e Mustangs began the game sending a fl urry

of shots at Dragons goaltender, Adam Beukeboom. Early in the fi rst period, they took a 1-0 lead. Th e lead would prove to be short-lived. At 11:21 into the fi rst, Brodie Jamieson, with help from Mitchell Cook and Joey Raats, tied the game up for the Dragons. Th e teams headed to their dressing rooms with a 1-1 tie. Th e Dragons turned up the pressure for the second period. Th ey sent a fl urry of 14 shots at the Mustangs net and kept the Mustangs shot count to a mere four. However, the Mustangs held on to keep the game tied at one apiece going into the third period. “We didn’t play a great fi rst period, but we had a really solid second. We had a lot of opportunities and the score could have been a bit more lopsided, but we just didn’t capitalize,” said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Dragons. One of the challenges the team had to adjust to was playing on an Olympic-sized rink “Th at ice size makes a bit of a diff erence. You have to skate a little further to get anywhere,” said Curran.

Th en, barely a minute into the third period, Brodie Jamieson and Mitchell Cook gave the Dragons an-other goal and a 2-1 lead. “Brodie had a great cut in on the goalie, made a great move, held the puck as long as he could, and there was the game winner,” said Curran. A minute later, tempers fl ared in the otherwise tame game when a Adam Danyluk and Mustang Blair Wentworth were called for boarding, which sparked a brawl involving Dragons Tristan Reimer, Danyluk, and three Mustangs. As of press time, the Dragons had 40 points on the season, two points behind the Okotoks Oilers, and fourth place in the AJHL southern division. Th e Dragons are already tied with their point total from the 2011-2012 AJHL season. Th e Dragons, along with the rest of the AJHL, will be taking a break over the holidays. Th ey will be re-turning to action on January 2 on the road against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. Th e Dragons’ fi rst game at home will be on January 9, when they host the Okotoks Oilers.

A veteran in the ranks of the Drumheller Dragons is being recognized as one of the top players in the AJHL. Forward Ryan Bloom, a 19 year old Calgary native, was named the Canalta Player of the Week for the week of December 10 to 16. “I’d say there are three guys that deserved to be looked at for that Player of the Week. Ryan, Bryton Mills, and Brennan Baxandall,” said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Dragons. “I’m really happy one of our boys got it.” During that week, Bloom accumulated one goal and six assists for a total of seven points. Bloom is currently leading the Dragons in goals, assists, and points and has proven himself to be con-sistently contributing to the Dragons’ eff orts. Curran attributed that success to Bloom’s confi -dence and determination and his line mates. “If you look at his line, which is him, Bryton Mills, and Colton Vanucci, they’ve really played well to-gether. It’s a very successful line,” said Curran. “Even when teams focus on them, they battle through. Th at’s just how Ryan plays.” Amongst the league leaders, Bloom is in 12th place for points. Over the 2012-2013 season, Bloom has averaged one point per game and has contributed 11 points in December alone. With 24 games left in the regular season, Bloom is on track to surpass his 2011-2012 totals of 17 goals, 28 assists, and 45 points. Th is will be the third season Bloom will have played with the Dragons.

Drumheller Dragon Ryan Bloom was named the AJHL Player of the Week for December 10 to 16. Bloom, a third year veteran of the Dragons, scored one goal and six as-

sists during that week. Bloom is currently the Dragons points leader and ranks at 12th in the AJHL.
