Survival and RevivalMaimonides’ 1st Sephardic Sefer Torah DedicationMore than 150 guests, dignitaries, volunteers and staff gathered in the MaimonidesSynagogue on February 7th for a joyous celebration to welcome Maimonides’ firstSephardic Sefer Torah. Commissioned in Israel, this magnificent torah wasgenerously donated by the Assouline Family in honour of their mother, Mme SimyAssouline, a resident at Maimonides.

The Talmud says that anyone who fulfills thecommandment of participating in the writingof a torah scroll is considered as if he receivedthe Torah on Mount Sinai. Rabbi Michael Wolffdelivered a moving D’var Torah and quotedfrom the book of Deuteronomy: “So now, writethis song for your-selves and teach it to theChildren of Israel”. (Deut. 31:19)

In keeping with tradition, the eveningresembled a festive wedding, complete withdelicious food, music, singing and dancing. The “Torah Bride” was carried under the

chuppah by four generations of theAssouline Family in a lively processionthrough the halls of Maimonides into theSynagogue. Rabbi Shalom Chriquipassionately auctioned off the finalletters, portions of the torah, and stitchesas Rabbi David Cohen assisted bycompleting the torah.

The celebration touched the hearts ofeveryone who shared in the mitzvah ofcompleting this new Sefer Torah and$23,000 was raised for the MaimonidesGeriatric Centre Synagogue Fund thanksto the generosity of the Assouline Familyand their friends.

La Survie et la renaissanceCélébration de la réception du premier Sefer Torah sépharade de MaimonidesPlus de 150 invités, dignitaires, bénévoles et membres de l’équipe du Centregériatrique Maimonides se sont réunis le 7 février dernier dans la synagogue duCentre à l'occasion d'une joyeuse célébration visant à accueillir le premier SeferTorah sépharade de Maimonides. Conformément à la tradition, la soirée a pris l'allure d'unenoce festive accompagnée de bonne chère, de musique, dechansons et de danses. La Torah a été portée sous la chuppahpar quatre générations de la famille Assouline dans une procession enjouée qui s’est déroulée dans les

corridors de Maimonideset s’est achevée dans lasynagogue. Le rabbinShalom Chriqui a mis auxenchères avec fougue lesdernières lettres, desparties de la Torah et lescoutures, pendant que le rabbin David Cohenprêtait main-forte enachevant la Torah.

La célébration a touchéle cœur de tous ceux quiont pris part à la mitzvahconsistant à achever ce

nouveau Sefer Torah, et une somme de 23 000 $ a été recueillie pour le fonds de lasynagogue du Centre gériatrique Maimonides. Un gros merci à la famille Assoulineet ses amis pour leur générosité.

Planetree Continuing Care Director Heidi Gil has met with theMaimonides community to explain how the Planetree approach to care fitsin with our five-year Strategic Plan with the ‘More than Care’ theme.

To receive the Planetree designation, Maimonides has to meet or exceedstringent criteria developed by Planetree to distinguish those health care facilities doingthe most advanced work inclient-centered care. ThePlanetree model of careemphasizes the relation-ships that sustain a healthyand meaningful life. Itcelebrates the uniquenessof each individual and res-ponds to the physical,mental, emotional, andspiritual needs of residentsand staff.

Maimonides is lookingforward to the journey to become a Planetreeaffiliate and enhancing ourresidents’ experience.

The 5th annual Maimonides Battle of the Bands was arock’n success generating $250,000 towards the SuiteDreams Capital Renovation Campaign to refurbish all ofthe residents’ rooms. Two sellout crowds packedMetropolis on Wednesday, December 5th and Thursday,

December 6th to hear eightamateur bands made up ofdentists, lawyers and other professionals belt it out toraise funds for Maimonides Geriatric Centre. This year,for the first time, Maimonides rolled out the red carpetfor its sponsors with a VIP cocktail reception before theshow featuring Ian Cooney and Sky Lounge. AndyNulman was an exceptional MC for both nightsopening the show performing with The Matt Demons.

“This is a gem of an event that just keepsgetting better and better,” says Rory Olson whoco-chaired this year’s Battle of the Bands along

with Gerry Kandestin and Terri Klein. This year’s sold out event was such a huge success that people are already signing up to participatein 2008.

La cinquième édition de l’événement Battle of the Bands du Centregériatrique Maimonides a connu un succès retentissant, amassant 250 000 $au profit du projet de rénovation Suites royales visant à moderniser toutesles chambres des résidents. Dans une salle comble au Metropolis lesdeux soirs, le mercredi 5 décembre et le jeudi 6 décembre, la foule estvenue assister au spectacle de huit orchestres amateurs, formés dedentistes, d’avocats et d’autres professionnels, dans le but de recueillirdes fonds pour le Centre gériatrique Maimonides. Cette année, pour lapremière fois, Maimonides a déroulé le tapis rouge en l’honneur de sescommanditaires, en organisant un cocktail pour ses invités de marque,

mettant en vedette Ian Cooney et Sky Lounge. Andy Nulman s’estdépassé comme maître de cérémonie des deux soirs, en ouvrant le spectacleavec The Matt Demons.

as Director of Geriatric Psychiatry at the McGillUniversity Health Centre. He also served as theDirector of Geriatric Psychiatry for McGillUniversity.

“We are thrilled to have someone of his caliberjoin our research group and take the helm of themany new projects we plan to initiate in thecoming years,” says Dr. Brian Gore, Director ofProfessional Services. “Dr Vida brings toMaimonides a wealth of both clinical andresearch experience in psychogeriatrics,” he adds.

It is hoped that Dr. Vida will start in his newposition this spring. He has met with members of

the research team at Maimonides and is lookingforward to the exciting challenges ahead. “I thinkour main goal is to find ways to enhance thequality of life of our residents through improvedquality of care.”

The Maimonides Foundation is pleased to befunding Dr. Vida’s three year position. As part ofthe Centre’s Strategic Plan, Maimonides hopes tocreate a Centre for Long-term Care Studies thatwill be the focus of innovative research. Our aim isto inaugurate the Centre by the year 2012.

The purchase of a Vibroacoustic chair wasmade possible thanks to a generousdonation by Foundation board memberRandi Greenberg in memory of MollieShachter. The chair uses sound vibrationto gently induce relaxation and is a majorbreakthrough for those dealing withagitation due to dementia.

CARESOINS

It’s not always easy to communicate effectivelywith someone with Alzheimer’s. Here are some Do’sand Don’ts that may help.

DO’s 1. Approach from the front, make eye contact, and introduce yourself if

necessary.

2. Speak slowly, calmly, and use a friendly facial expression.

3. Use short, simple, and familiar words.

4. Show that you are listening and trying to understand what is being said.

5. Be careful not to interrupt; avoid arguing and criticizing.

6. Ask one question at a time, and allow time for a reply.

7. Make positive suggestions – e.g. “let's go into the garden” rather thannegative ones, such as “don't go in there”.

8. Identify others by name, rather than using pronouns (“she”, “he”).

9. Make suggestions if the person has trouble choosing.

10. Empathize; have patience and understanding. Touch or hug, if it helps.

DON’Ts 1. Don’t talk about the person as if he or she weren’t there.

2. Don’t confront or correct, if it can be avoided.

3. Don’t treat the person as a child, but as an adult.

You can often cheer someone up by complimenting them on past achieve-ments – raising children, work done, contributions to the community, and soon. Let them reminisce without asking questions that may have them searchingfor an answer.

Linda August, Assistant to the Director of Nursing and ClinicalServices, gave a presentation entitled “Institutional Abuse: Movingbeyond the complaints process to a culture of respect” at theCanadian conference on Elder law in Vancouver, BC. She alsosubmitted a brief on institutional abuse as part of the publicconsultation on life conditions of the elderly conducted by theprovincial government.

Rena Halickman, Head of the Department of Volunteer Services,accepted the position as Vice President, Board of Directors,Association of Jewish Homes And Services to the Aging (AJHSA).

Stefania Iapaolo, Risk Manager, gave a presentation about ouraward-winning restraint reduction program at the Canadian HealthAssociation Intramural Session – CQI and Risk Management whichwas held in Ottawa.

Paula Levinson, Head Nurse, was a “judge” at RNA “olympics” in acontest between RNA students from PAAC & Ecole Faubourg.Levinson and Stefania Iapaolo, gave a poster presentation about ournationally recognized Fall Prevention Program at the CanadianHealthcare Safety Symposium.

Silvana Mauro, Professional Coordinator – Rehabilitation, wasrecently asked to sit on a committee stemming from the ministry. Theobjective is to develop a standardized protocol on restraint use to beused in all centers in Quebec.

Ronna Miller, Professional Coordinator – Accredited Homes andIntermediate Resources, was a guest lecturer at the Middle EastProgram of the McGill school of social work.

Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services, was apanel expert at the National Seniors Council discussions on ElderAbuse. Ms. Tremblay authored two chapters in the book “SoinsInfirmiers aux Aînés en perte d’autonomie, une approche adaptée auCHSLD.” The book was the recipient of the Prix de la ministre del’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport. Ms. Tremblay participated in ElderAbuse Consultation Team Lectures and Case Discussions where thequestion “Restraints, Protection or Illusion” was examined.

Dr. Avi Whiteman, was a presenter at the 2007 State-of-the-ArtConference on Occupational Health for Health Care Workers whichwas held in Vancouver, BC. Dr. Whiteman spoke about “Reducingshort-term disability stays by fast-tracking depressed employees topsychiatric care.”

MAIMONIDESDOCTOR HONOUREDFOR EXCEPTIONALCAREDoctor Tom Zaphiratos was recentlyrecognized with Maimonides’ first meritaward for exceptional professional services.The award was presented at the annualgeneral meeting of the Centre, Corporation,Foundation and Medical Research Foundation.

Dr. Zaphiratos has been a member of theMaimonides Geriatric Centre medical stafffor the last 14 years. He was selected by his peers as the physician who has contributedexemplary high levels of professional excellence, dedication and commitment to the Centre,its residents and fellow staff members.

Ellea aussi soumis un rapport sur les mauvais traitements en établissementdans le cadre de consultations publiques sur les conditions de vie desaînés menées par le gouvernement provincial.

5th floor Activity Room TransformedThe activity room on the 5th floor was recently completely renovated as part ofthe Suite Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign. The living room area featuresbeautiful sofas, furniture and a flat-screen TV that is perfect when familiescome for a visit. In another area, there is a complete working kitchen that willalso be used for residents to participate in cooking programs. The room feelsvery much like a home. This is the first activity room to be renovated thanks to a generous gift by Eileen and the late Louis Dubrovsky. The activity room onthe 4th floor is the next one to be renovated. Morrie Marcovitch: “I had to paint”Morrie Marcovitch was a passionate man who loved to paint. A successfulbusinessman by day, Morrie would often paint late into the evening. As Morrie said“I had to paint”…and that he did, completing almost 1000 works of art before hisdeath in 2006. Many of hispaintings now hang in thehomes of those he loved.However, with such a hugecollection, Morrie’s familyhad to store much of theworks in a warehouse,before donating part of thecollection to the Art forHealing Foundation. Now,visitors to Maimonides canenjoy 19 of his colourfulabstract oil paintings as partof the latest Art for Healinggallery on the 4th floor.

“My father never wantedto sell his paintings. He feltthat no value could be puton creativity,”says Tronny Sweibel, one of Morrie’s 3 daughters. “It would mean somuch to him to know that his paintings are at Maimonides and will be able to bringjoy to so many people,” she adds.

The Morrie Marcovitch gallery at Maimonides serves as a tribute to the legacyof an incredible painter. The gallery was made possible by the generousdonation of the works of art by his family as part of an initiative of the Art ForHealing Foundation to bring healing through art.

Morrie Marcovitch : « J’ai besoin de peindre »Morrie Marcovitch était un homme passionné qui adorait peindre. Homme d'affairesprospère le jour, Morrie passait souvent ses soirées à peindre jusqu’à des heurestardives. Comme il se plaisait à le dire : « J’ai besoin de peindre. » Et c’est exactement

ce qu’il a fait, réalisant près de 1 000 œuvresavant de décéder en 2006. Beaucoup de sespeintures ornent aujourd’hui les murs desmaisons des gens qu’il aimait. Toutefois, vula taille imposante de sa collection, lafamille de Morrie a dû conserver le gros deses œuvres dans un entrepôt avant d'endonner une partie à la Fondation de l’artpour la guérison. Les visiteurs deMaimonides peuvent désormais admirer19 de ses peintures abstraites colorées àl’huile au quatrième étage del’établissement dans le cadre de la toutedernière galerie de L’Art pour la guérison.

« Mon père n’a jamais voulu vendre sespeintures; il jugeait qu’on ne pouvaitattribuer une valeur à la créativité », déclare

Tronny Sweibel, l’une des trois filles de Morrie. « Il serait tellement heureux de savoirque ses peintures sont à Maimonides et qu'elles apportent du bonheur à autant depersonnes », ajoute-t-elle.

This Cheese, That WineThe cookbook committee held a wine and cheese party which was graciouslyhosted at the Westmount home of Vivian and Robin Billick. Over 60 guestssavoured different kinds of wine with Sommelier Nick Hamilton. CheeseSpecialist Gilles Jourdenais from La Fromagerie du Marché Atwater provided arefined selection of gourmet cheeses to complement the wine choices. It was asuperb evening to launch the Foundation’s latest endeavor – a cookbook.

The cookbook committee is led by co-chairs, Robert Kertesz and DeniseZunenshine who have embarked upon this exciting project to support theMaimonides Suite Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign.

We are currently collecting recipes with memorable anecdotes for food that issophisticated, modern and is as easy and enjoyable to prepare as it is to eat. Allrecipes must be kosher style or kosher style adaptable and will be tested beforebeing selected for the book. Visit www.maimonides.net to download the recipeform.
