Blood Can Be Made Into Different Parts

How does blood help?Red CellsRed cells, or erythrocytes:

carry oxygen from the lungs to your body’s tissue

take carbon dioxide back to your lungs to be exhaled.

How does blood help?PlateletsPlatelets, or thrombocytes:

are small, colorless cell fragments in the blood

interact with clotting proteins to stop or prevent bleeding.

How does blood help?Plasma is the liquid portion of blood –

in which red and white blood cells and platelets are suspended.

helps in maintaining good blood pressure and

supplies critical proteins for blood clotting and immunity.

What are blood types?There are four main types of blood:

A, B, O and AB

Every person has a blood type.

Each blood type can also be positive (+) or negative (-)

The perfect matchTo make sure a blood transfusion is safe, the blood that is given to the patient must match the patient’s blood type.

Group O can donate red blood cells to anybody. It’s the universal donor.Group A can donate red blood cells to A’s and AB’s.Group B can donate red blood cells to B’s and AB’sGroup AB can donate to other AB’s but can receive from all others.

Blood Type: The Negative and the Positive

There is a another factor to blood types called the Rh factor. The Rh can be either present (+) or absent ( – ).

Rh negative blood is given to Rh-negative patients,

Rh positive blood or Rh negative blood may be given to Rh positive patients.
