Alternative Insulating Liquids
Challenges
Lower dieletric strength, higher viscosity& higher pour point, compatibility issues
Solutions
•Design adjustments,tailored coolingdesign
Benefits of alternative fluids
•Longer lifecycle, higher temperaturerise limits, reduced insurance premiums& therefore lower total cost of ownership
•Reaching a higher level of personalsafety
•Meet regulations regardingenvironment impacts
•Siemens provides proven equipmentwith appropriate designs
•Committees and publications onalternative insulating fluids
-IEC (TC10) and CIGRE (WG D1)
-Electric Today, Electra, ISH etc.

Highbury Urban SubstationProject Highlights
• Turn-key scope for SAGÖ Transformers Weiz, including transformers, coolersand heat recovery system
• Heat recovery system to utilize waste heat for loads ranging from no-load to 60%of rated load.
• Use of synthetic ester (MIDEL 7131) at a rated voltage of 400kV
• Cooling system noise level at full load of 30dB(A) @ 10m. Equivalent to soundpower level of 58dB(A)

Highbury Urban SubstationOverview
• Severely limited space, eliminated option to incorporate standard ONAN/ODAFtransformer with freestanding radiator bank
• Decision made to utilize oil/water/air cooling system to allow greater flexibility ofsite configuration
• Oil/water/air cooling system boasts advantage of facilitating capture of wasteheat generated by transformer
• Given the sensitivities of an urban substation site, requirement for use ofreduced fire hazard insulating liquid identified
• Radiated sound power level of cooling system to comply with extremely stringenturban planning requirements

Grid Resilience Concept PROTECT
Bullets may penetrate the tank andcause a internal flashover in thewindings
• Internal flashovers
• Explosions and subsequent fire
• Others units maybe also affected
• Blackout of units on substations
• Damage to a Transformers windings
• Replacement time exceeds one year
