CHALLENGES“Woodill (2004) argues that the disappointment in e-learning to date is the result of several factors, including: “speed to market” of poorly conceived products, a focus in the e-learning industry on the wonders of new technology rather than good instructional design, boring online materials, a lack of understanding of the learning process by software developers, and a lack of understanding of the unique teaching advantages of electronic networked media.”

CHALLENGES“A further reason for the problems with e-learning has been a common failure to follow sound e-learning project management principles (Pasian and Woodill, 2005). Often this is because e-learning projects are given to people without any experience or training in project management. As Mayberry (2004) has noted, most often it is instructional designers who are required to serve the dual roles of designing educational materials and project management.”

STATISTICS• Elearning Guild – 360 LMS Report 2007: 29.58% of

respondents plan to upgrade their LMS in the next 12 months.

• www.TrainingOutsourcing.com : More than 25% of the survey’s respondents currently used multiple LMS’s within their organizations. Of these, more than 75% said they plan to consolidate systems, and more than 75% plan to perform this consolidation within the next year. The top factors cited as driving the need to consolidate are the centralization of learner data (77.8%), improved reporting (68.9%), improved content integration (64.4%) and improved integration with other enterprise applications (62.2%). Rather surprisingly, only 40% of respondents cited reduction of technology costs as a business driver.
