Innovation is the engine that makes the engineered world turn faster. Given that fact, it is no wonder that the pressure to innovate is on. Organizations are feeling increased pressurefrom intense global competition. There are heightened customer expectations, directives to reduce costs and liability concerns. At the same time, factors such as skilled labor, the shrinking product lifecycle and time to market are raising the stakes. The value of being right and the cost of being wrong have never been higher.

Simulation fuels the product innovation engine. And engineering simulation is exactly what is needed to provide an edge in an increasing number of industries, markets and applications. Lighter weight, stronger joints, reduced drag, decreased cost — virtually any variableis a candidate for optimization. And with the right simulation tools and the power of virtual prototyping on yourdesktop come a host of advantages.

Engineering simulation technology is now accessible to anyone interested in pushing the product envelope. Interfaces are more intuitive. Processes are automated. And computing power continues its exponential growth. All of this puts the power of simulation in the hands of the world’s engineers — and the resulting benefits in theproduct portfolios and business processes of the organizations that share the vision. The democratization of simulation has arrived. Together with customers across a wide range of industries and applications, ANSYS is innovating the way in which products are designed and developed, and transforming the way in which the worldis engineered.

Past initiatives aimed solely at product cost, quality ortime to market are no longer sufficient to gain marketadvantage in today’s highly competitive manufacturingmarkets. The focus today is on innovation: products thatclearly differentiate themselves from others while alsobeing affordable, reliable and delivered to market at theoptimal time.

UnequalledDepthSince engineering problems vary widely, simulation solutions must be the right fit.In a world where materials contact each other, fluids and structures interact and problems have almost infinite variation, simulation toolsmust have an array of capabilities to match. The goal is fast, accurate,high-fidelity solutions for every engineer in every situation. The simplefact is that when you have technology that runs deep, you will alwaysfind the best tool for the problem at hand.

Since its inception, ANSYS has been focused on the continuous development of advanced tools and technology to solve the world’smost challenging engineering problems. That unwavering vision andstrategy have resulted in a depth of solution choices unequalled in theengineering simulation world. Structural tools, for example, have beendesigned to handle any problem: large displacements, finite strain, contact, multibody dynamics, random vibration, implicit and explicit.Fluids, thermal and electromagnetic tools are no different in their utilitarian variation. With depth in every simulation domain comeschoice, rather than a one-size-fits-all assumption. For every physicsdiscipline — structural, fluids, thermal, electromagnetic, explicit andothers — ANSYS offers state-of-the-art products, capabilities and features for virtually any engineering eventuality.

Unparalleled Breadth

If every engineering problem were a nail, the only simulation tool you’d need would be a hammer. But engineering challenges are varied and diverse. There is no “basic” analysis. Instead, there are structural laws andfluid dynamics, electromagnetic forces and thermal properties, chemical reactions and acoustic phenomena. There are also many stages of the product lifecycle, all of which can benefit from using the right tool. Given the multiplicity of physics and the complexity of launching a product, the engineering toolbox should include the broadest integrated assortment of high-quality tools in order to get the job done right.

ANSYS offers technology and solutions across a vast engineering landscape that includes a wide variety of industries, everyphysics discipline and all stages of the product development lifecycle. Virtually any industry — energy and electronics, biomedicaland the built environment, consumer products and sports equipment — can realize the benefit and, because of competitive pressures, can’t afford not to. Look around — there is almost no product or process that can’t reap the rewards of virtual prototyping.

The Simulation Driven Product Development™ vision from ANSYS offers tools enabling simulation for every step along theproduct development path: from pre-processing, modeling and meshing; to design exploration and solvers; to post-processingand knowledge management. Integrating all of these tools into a unified software environment allows product development, prototyping and testing to take place in the virtual rather than the physical world. With this paradigm shift, performance improves, costs decrease and time to market accelerates. This is the critical bottom line of the simulation equation.

ComprehensiveMultiphysics

We live in a multiphysics world, so simulation should represent that reality.Thermal gradients give rise to material deformation. Applied stresses produce electric potentials. Fluids and structuresinterface and interact. As competition grows and margins of error shrink, it is no longer wise to make assumptionsabout the physics involved. Products for the real world need to be designed by representing real-world conditions asaccurately as possible. The answer is not one-way iterative and inelegant components, but simulation that uses coupledand robust multiphysics.

ANSYS is the only engineering simulation technology provider with the depth and breadth of tools to enablereal-world multiphysics. The ANSYS Workbench™ platform provides the foundation for delivering integrated multiphysics simulation with a high degree of automation and a user-friendly interface —all in a unified environment. ANSYS Workbench allows users to create parametric modelsacross physics and geometry and to perform sensitivity studies and design optimizationwith coupled-physics solutions. This, in turn, provides the highest level of fidelity invirtual modeling, when physical testing is either too costly, impractical or evenimpossible. It is only when simulation involves multiple physics —fully coupled, integrated and unified — that the benefits of virtual prototyping and the Simulation Driven Product Development™ process can be fully exploited in the quest for innovative products.

EngineeredScalability

With a simulation landscape that is complex, varied and always evolving, choice should be part of the solution. The only certainty is that one solution does not fit all situations. Processes can be automated or highly customizable. Projects can involve a single user or cross-functional teams. Problems can require just a single laptop or the power and speed of high-performance computing. For all of these reasons, scalability that is carefully engineered is essential if simulation tools are to address a future that will, with certainty, be different than today.

From the start, ANSYS has designed its technology and tools with a flexible foundation that is carefully engineered for scalability. As a customer’s commitment to simulation evolves, ANSYS supports the power of choice by offering capability levels that meetthose changing conditions. The ultimate result is an ROI path with no dead ends. The suite of software offers scalable flexibility for any level of expertise — from the designer to the engineer to the analyst; scalable performance for any type of use — from thedesktop to work stations to high-performance supercomputers; and scalable deployment to expand with maturing processes — for single users, work groups or the enterprise. The goal is to provide tools that fit and can easily be integrated into the full spectrum of customer organizations, processes and challenges, not just today but with an eye toward the future.

AdaptiveArchitecture

Engineers should spend their time developing good ideas, not working to overcome incompatible software.Functional software for design, engineering and management comes in all shapes and sizes. In-houseand third-party codes and processes need to be worked with, not worked around. Interoperability is theoperative word. To be truly effective, simulation technology should have doors you can open, not wallsthat lock the world out. In the end, full connectivity provides the most options and, in turn, builds thestrongest simulation system. More than 15,500 customers can’t all be wrong.

With experience in every IT environment imaginable, ANSYS has created an open and adaptive softwareenvironment for maximum associativity to all major CAD, CAE, PDM and PLM interfaces as well asthird-party and in-house codes. For CAD, all products from ANSYS are CAD-neutral with bi-directionalconnectivity to every major system. For the CAE world, there are links to different solvers and easy import/export processes through a standardized interface. For PLM and PDM software, there are directlinks to most systems for cohesive integration. Data sharing and knowledge management are providedat a single-user level or across the enterprise. The overarching ANSYS strategy is to maximize peer-to-peer associativity, provide enterprise-wide efficiencies and achieve plug-and-play status for simulationsoftware — all important ingredients of dynamic CAE collaboration with multiple hardware and softwarecomponents and partners.

Until now, analysis has been done almost as an afterthought at many companies, performed apart from design and out of the product development loop. Advances in technology and processes notwithstanding, the single most important factor inbringing simulation into the mainstream of product development is a radical shift inattitude. In engineering departments, simulation tools are now more commonly beingregarded as an integral part of design instead of as an outside service used only on alimited basis. And at the executive level, simulation today is being taken into accountas part of corporate strategy in bringing more innovative products to market anddriving more revenue to the company’s top line.
