Welcome to the last issue of the Informer. Just where the time has gone, I cannot say, but the warmer weather and long bright days make the month of May an inevitable reminder that we will shortly be watching our graduates cross the stage to collect their hard-earned diplomas. This is the last issue of the Informer and includes much information on our final activities for this school year. Read on and mark your calendars to come and join us. During the final weeks of the school year, there is always a wonderful variety of events for our families to enjoy. Please feel free take part and enjoy every aspect of the final weeks—whether it is outside at one of the Field Days, or inside at one of the upcoming assemblies, you are very welcome.

We also annually extend a very warm welcome to anyone who wishes to attend our Baccalaureate, (Wednesday, June 6 at 18:00 here at school), and Graduation, (Thursday, June 7, at 19:30 also at ISS), ceremonies. The Baccalaureate gathering is a warm, personal, friendly—and often tear-filled—evening organized by the senior class as a “gift” to themselves, their parents and their teachers. The graduation ceremony, which marks the last night as ISS students for our 12th grade is a formal ceremony in our theatre with our seniors and the high school teachers resplendent in their caps and gowns keen to accept the ISS diplomas. As always, all members of the school community are invited to both Baccalaureate and Graduation. Following both ceremonies, there will be a reception which participants are welcome to attend.

As our annual thank you back to the Parent Association, once again the administration invited the outgoing and incoming Parent Association Board members to breakfast on Thursday, May 31 in the cafeteria. In a school that prospers throughout the year by countless acts of generous volunteering by a huge number of parents, how best can the administration thank each individual? We like to turn the tables and serve the parents, instead of us always watching the reverse in action. This breakfast is a symbolic way for us to extend our appreciation to each of these individuals and, in a wider sense, to all the parents in the school who give of their time throughout the school year. Thank you from all of us here at ISS.

On a practical note, are you aware that if your child is leaving the school—either moving or graduating, we are happy to refund any unused funds from your school lunch account. To do this, just contact our receptionist, Ms. Anne Brit Winters. Our assumption is that anyone who is returning to ISS in August does not have a problem in leaving unused funds in their lunch account where they can again access them in August with the new year starting up. If our assumption is incorrect and you would like the money

refunded now in June, that is fine—just communicate that information to Ms. Winters. On a normal basis, we recommend that during the school year parents check their children’s account about once a week to monitor the balances. This way if mistakes are made, they can be quickly corrected before too much time has passed by. And for the future, we would also encourage you to re-fill your child’s lunch account online using your KID number.

This is also the issue of the Informer where I like to pay tribute to our ISS teachers who will be ending their employment with the school at the end of the school year. The foundation of the institution is based on the skill of the people who work with your children on a daily basis. We are privileged to bring people to work at the school from a range of backgrounds and geographical origins. When they leave us, they leave an indelible, positive impression on the school and the children they teach and we thank them for sharing their time and their talents with us.

In particular, I would like to extend my thanks and congratulations to two wonderfully gifted teachers who are retiring after many years’ of service to ISS, Mrs. Cilla Hines and Mr. Geoff Dearson.

Mrs. Hines joined ISS in 1989. During her many years at the school, she taught in our pre-school, primary and middle school. Anyone who has seen any of our school plays, knows that her incredible skills at designing costumes has been a gift to the school and its arts program.

Mr. Dearson joined the school in 1992. Since that time he has shared his time and talents with legions of French and Theory of Knowledge students. His brilliant mind and articulate manner have been wonderful gifts for his students and the school over the years. We wish both Mrs. Hines and Mr. Dearson all the very best for a long and happy retirement. The office will be open all summer--drop by! Many think that once school is over for the year that we lock the doors and don’t open them again until August. In actual fact, the school is a busy place throughout the summer. Many “behind the scenes” activities preparing the school for August take place. A literal mountain of new supplies is processed during the summer. One of the most important things that we do is welcome new families and give them tours of the school. The school will be open from 08:30 to 14:30 every Monday through Friday. You are welcome to come by with new families. We have received information on many, many new families who will be joining the school and we are always delighted to help them become more familiar with their new surroundings. We already know of many joining the school in August, with once more a net increase over

the families that we say good-bye to as they leave Stavanger this summer.

Have a safe, healthy and happy summer and we will see most of you and many new students back here in August!

ISS students are again showing their skills as ‘Young Researchers’. This year six ISS students were invited to the Unge forskere national final in Oslo on 20th April 2012. The final was held at the Norwegian Technical Museum and I had the privilege of travelling to Oslo for the day, talking to finalists from around Norway and attending the prize-giving in the afternoon which included an inspiring speech from Thorvald Stoltenberg.

I am happy to report the ISS students were extremely successful in this prestigious national competition, and also that they enjoyed the experience of the Unge forskere final presentations and activities, including a fabulous gala dinner on the Friday evening. Five of our 12th grade IB students were awarded third prizes in various categories, and 8th grader Mikhail Zakharov won first prize in the competition for younger students.

Mikhail Zakharov amazed the judges with the accuracy with which he could measure an individual’s position on earth using measurements of the sun and the Pole Star with equipment as simple as a broom handle and a ruler. His study showed just what is possible recording that: ‘The applied methods of locating the geographical latitudes and longitudes from observations over the Sun’s motion provided accuracy within 0.2°. Locating the geographical latitudes from observations over Polaris position provided accuracy within 0.5°.’ His project was awarded a first prize in the class for younger students (age 12 – 16).

Assia Chelaghma won a third prize in the science and technology class for her exhaustive experiments on models of traditional wind towers or badgirs and concluded that: ‘The hot climate and the exhaustion of energy sources around the Equator make evaporative cooling among the best methods to tolerate higher temperatures. With more structural improvement, badgirs can be exploited effectively throughout warm and dry regions to naturally air condition buildings.’ Assia has also been awarded sponsorship to attend Space Camp on Andøya in June!

Jacob Fortes-Goldman also won a third prize for his careful scientific studies of the effectivity of cigarette filters, a topic that was inspired by his interest in medicine. Although this is a well-researched topic, Jacob felt that a personal approach could be of interest to other

students. He states that his results can be used both by manufacturers and consumers: ‘Showing how increasing the length of filter by a few millimeters, the percentage of substance, that would otherwise have entered the lungs, is reduced substantially.’

Echo Li followed his love of music to investigate film soundtracks, asking himself ‘How do Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt both use the film scores of the Pirates of the Caribbean series as a vehicle to convey messages and portray characterisation through musical elements?’ He analysed the musical scores from the soundtracks looking for musical devices which brought out the emotions of the different scenes. His interesting and unusual project was awarded a third prize in the humanities class.

Nora Svihus has a passion for theatre and her project was a detailed analysis of ‘the methods Tennessee Williams applied within the theatrical techniques simultaneous staging and music by looking at two of his most famous plays: The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire.’ Nora described how the set designs and the music contribute to the story as much as the actors do. Nora was awarded a third prize in the humanities class for this fascinating and thoughtful project.

Kaja Drews won the third prize in the Fritt Ord (free speech) competition with her study of advertisements for cosmetic surgery in UK GLAMOUR magazines. She concludes that: ‘Physically altering one’s body is portrayed as a culturally acceptable and normal way to go about solving perceived problems, creating a vulnerable market of women that are persuaded to believe cosmetic surgery offers a solution.’ Kaja was also awarded a special prize of a study tour to the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Since students at ISS began to enter this competition, in the year 2000, we have now had 42 national finalists (see the chart).

We are very proud of all our students, and look forward to seeing success in next year’s competition – a challenge for both our current 11th graders and maybe some Middle School ‘young researchers’??

PSAT11th graders take this exam as practice for the SAT as well as to be eligible for merit-based scholarships. 10th graders who also intend to take the SAT or ACT exam the following year should consider taking this preliminary exam for practice. Your exam results will be published on line with SOAS (Summary of Answers and Skills) which indicates the areas that need to be improved further. This exam is only offered in October during the school year.

SAT and SAT (II) Subject TestsFor current 10th and 11th grade students check the requirements of the universities you are considering applying to. If your desired university requires both the SAT and the SAT Subject Tests please be aware that you can only take the SAT OR SAT Subject Tests on a given day, therefore, plan accordingly and if you need both exams you will need to schedule two different test dates. Be sure to check the specific requirements if your university requires the SAT Subject Tests (they usually require 2-3 SAT II Subject Tests) and know that the foreign language SAT II tests are only offered in November.

requirements of the universities you are applying to. Many universities are now accepting the ACT Plus in lieu of the SAT subject tests.

Note: If a university accepts either the ACT or SAT, it might be useful to take each of these tests once during the eleventh grade to see which type of exam you are more successful with. Then it is advisable to retake the exam, either the ACT or SAT, a second time during the fall semester of your 12th grade. Universities take the best individual scores from the test even if taken at two different times.

If you are planning to apply for entrance into university for the fall of 2012 all of these exams must be completed by December 2012, if you plan to take them here at ISS.

*11th grade students should only consider taking these exams in the spring semester.*12th grade students who are planning college entrance for fall 2013 should only consider taking these exams in the fall semester.

It is most helpful to become familiar with the format and content of these exams so please carefully review for them and use the study books that are available in the ISS Library and Counseling Office.

Additional information about these tests will be given at Senior Seminar and Junior Seminar next year.

TO 1 1TH GRADE STUDENTS WHO WILL NEED TO TAKE THE TOEFL EXAM FOR UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONIf the university you are planning to attend requires you to demonstrate English language proficiency you may sign up online at www.ets.org to locate a testing center. Be sure to take the TOEFL or, if the university permits, the IELTS by December 2012.

Considering a Gap Year? Read what 2011 graduate Erika HvistEndaHl said about her experience

Before my senior year had started, I was busy looking at universities, courses, and possible plans for the future. I was so eager to study what I wanted, live by myself, meet new people, and to just be done with high school… until I visited a university and panicked, realizing that I didn’t know where I wanted to go or what I wanted to study.

That was when I decided to take a gap year, and I am so grateful that I did.

In this past year I have worked two jobs, saved up money for the future, gotten my driver’s license, met great people, volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary in Africa, gotten a much stronger sense of what I want to study, and most importantly, feel ready to go to university abroad and begin the next part of my life. My favorite part of this year has been my 5-week trip to Africa. I took a long break from both my jobs on the first of March and traveled to Namibia to volunteer at the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary for 5 weeks. This sanctuary took care of farm animals, carnivores they were preparing to release, and other animals that had been too hurt to survive out in the wild.

What I loved so much about this place was that they

really made you a part of the process and taught about conservation with presentations and special tutorials once we had to dart an animal or track one. In the 5 weeks I was there I did everything from preparing food and feeding it to carnivores, bottle feeding baby baboons and zebras, walking caracals and the older baboons, and even hiking up mountains in a gigantic nature reserve where only handful of people had ever been before to track the cheetahs and leopards they had released.

It was absolutely the perfect project for me who loved animals and wanted to see new places. I met amazing people and would love to go on a similar project again to see more of Africa; it has absolutely been the highlight of my gap year.

Finally, I would just like to say that if you are on the fence about taking a gap year and don’t feel entirely ready to go to university, take one. You have nothing to lose and countless things to gain that will only help you in the future. You will be more ready than ever to start university and the next part of your life, AND you will have more work experience and life experience than you did the year before.

As I write there are only just under three weeks left of the academic year 2011-2012. The May 17th Norwegian Constitution day parade is just behind us. I think we all would have liked to see a bit better weather but the crowds were out in force celebrating national identity and culture without a hint of nationalism or jingoism.

Students taking the IB examinations have now finished their last papers and students undertaking their IGCSE examinations are nearing the end of their assessments that continues into June. The remainder of the high school body will start their end of year exams shortly (29th May through to the 4th June inclusive). We wish all students the very best and hope that they truly reflect their potential in these assessments.

It was great to see so many at the middle and high school Choir Concert earlier in May and a big thank you to Mr Mudra and Ms Cosgriff and all those involved for all the hard work and effort ensuring these events are so successful.

Moving on to new information it is the time of year

sees all of us preparing for transition. If your family’s transition will see you leaving the International School of Stavanger at the end of the year, please do not forget to fill out a withdrawal form before leaving. For families that have indicated that they are leaving we have sent a copy of the form to you via e-mail; however, if you have not received one of the forms please request on via telephone or e-mail or you may pick one up in any of the three offices (Primary, Middle or High). We will need a little time to process the records and have them available for you in time for your departure.

This is also the time of year when students begin to frantically look under beds and behind furniture for all of those things that they have lost during the year. Please remember that all school debts must be paid in full before we can release records. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following things:

• Lost library and/or classroom books. These will need to be paid for in the Business Manager’s office and the receipt presented to the library or the Middle or High School office.

money in your account will be waiting for you when you come back to school. Otherwise, you can get a refund of money at the end of school.

• Athletic uniforms. These need to be turned in or paid for just like books.

• Any other miscellaneous debts.

We greatly appreciate your efforts to find those books and materials and/or pay those debts before the end of school. It’s closer than you think!

This is also the time of year that finds us looking forward to next year and the changes it will bring. We are pleased to say that nearly all first choices have been accommodated for next academic year within the schedule with the odd exception as such we will only send course choice confirmations to students who need to make an alternative choice.

In grade 11 we have been unable to offer Theatre Arts as an option as there were only a couple of students opting for this course however, we have the facility for students to enroll in a IB Film course via on online programme offered by Pajoma Education (an approved IBO provider of online courses).

As you are aware, Norwegian as a first or foreign language is now a compulsory subject for all students in grade 9. By vertically grouping students we are now able to provide Norwegian as a foreign language option in grade 10 also.

IGCSE Music on a school supported basis continues to be available this year for students in grades 9 and 10 for who have a strong enough musical background and experience to meet the criteria for eligibility to enroll in the course. Students wishing to register for this course will need to audition with Mr Mudra and details will be sent to those students who have expressed an interest.

Some of the elective courses are well subscribed, but as last year we are anticipating that the vast majority, if not all, first choice electives will be scheduled.

We will continue to take on board the requests of our stakeholders in the planning and scheduling process and when numbers warrant it seek to offer appropriate programmes within the school day.

As we look forward to the remaining days of school I thought it would be pertinent to outline the remaining key events:

Fri 25th & Sat 26th May • NECIS Rugby & Football in Luxemburg.

Students will travel on Thursday 24th.• NECIS Track & Field, Fri 1st – Sat 2nd June.

Unfortunately, this year the track and field NECIS has been scheduled during the middle of our end of year school exams so students taking the exams will not be able to be involved in the athletics meet. The setting of the dates is unfortunately outside of our control.

On Monday 4th June, as part of the end of year exam schedule, grade 11 students will have the opportunity to work on extended essay preparation. It is important that grade 11 students are in school on this day. Our 11th Grade students will meet in the Library after homeroom at 8:45 for an Extended Essay presentation where students will receive a reminder of the work they need to do on their extended essay. After this time (approximately 9:15) students should meet with their extended essay supervisor and spend the rest of the day working on their extended essay.

Welcome to the last Informer of the year! We are now in the very busy run down to the end of the school year. This article will outline some of the events which will take place in the near future. Please mark your calendars so we can help our middle school students stay organized.

Please remember that regular scheduled classes continue into the last week of school.

HomeroomLeading up to the last week of school, middle school students will begin the process of clearing out their lockers. All students are required to return all text books that were issued to them this year. Now is the time to start searching for those class books and library books! Students will be billed for any lost/damaged books. Please ensure that students search their bedrooms thoroughly!

Our 8th grade students will also be returning their iPads, but will be re-issued new ones in August.

All middle school students will clear out their locker and clean their locker in readiness for the next school year.

Middle school homeroom advisory sessions are focusing on ‘Transitions’.

Now is the time for the final words…I have had a marvellous time working with our wonderful Middle School faculty, you, the parents, and the Middle School students this year. Primary School NewsCongratulations to the students who participated in the track and field practices and meet. Beyond having fun, the students got a feel for being part of a team and learned skills in running, jumping, hurdling and throwing. Thank you to the many parents and staff who helped direct activities and teach skills. Thank you as well to the varsity track team for helping with the track meet, and to Ms Megan Medaas and Ms Kari Hvidevold for arranging the practices and meet.

Congratulations to the cast of the Primary School musical, Go for Gold for three great productions. Thank you to parents and staff for all that was done behind the scenes with the set and costumes. I send a special thank you to Ms Lorinda Wharton for coordinating costumes, Ms Marion McMillan for sound and Ms Christine Kemp as director for the musical.

Some highlights for this school year include the consistent hard work and good progress in learning by the students, the community building of the ISS Parents Association, the assemblies for each grade level that put every child on stage, the visits by parents to our open house, share in our learning in homerooms and in music, reading stories and ideas of children printed on paper or saved on IT, children’s art in the hallways and classrooms, seeing the rising comprehension scores on student assessments, hearing

children converse in many languages, children building number sense with blocks and calendar dates, returning children welcoming new children throughout the year, volleyball and track and field, scouts, sports offered through IBA, dance classes on Fridays, the winter concerts, both musicals, the trip to Soma Farm sponsored by the Parents Association, Outdoor Education Weeks with Grades 4 and 5, fantastic art displays, 100th day of school project, class field trips to extend the curriculum, enhanced learning with new IT resources, Grade 5 band in concert, the new library and tolerating all the changes with the near-completion of the school extension.

We had a bus safety day. Students were presented with information about the importance and responsibilities to stay safe on the bus. Students also got to see the shock of teachers’ faces when teachers demonstrated the effect of stopping at 25 km/hr with seatbelts on a machine. A few days later, a school bus had to stop quickly as a car had made a poor maneuver. All students were wearing seatbelts and no one was injured. Thank you, students, for taking your responsibility in safety.

First Days of School in August 2012A letter will be sent in early August to new and returning students announcing a 20-minute appointment to meet the teacher on Monday, 13 August. This day provides a transition so children see where things are and build a comfort level at school, knowing where to go and feeling at home in a new room at school. Primary School children in grades Kindergarten through Grade 5 can start riding the buses from 14 August. We will have a full day of classes from 8:30-15:15, Tuesday, 14 August, for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5.

Pre-School 3 and Pre-School 4 classes start at 8:30 and end at 12:00 from 14-17 August. Full days, 8:30-15:15 for Pre-School 3 and Pre-School 4, start from 20 August. Children in Pre-School 3 and Pre-School 4 do not ride the bus without an adult accompanying.

We will have our Primary School Open House on 28 August, so please reserve that evening.

FarewellWe will say a fond farewell to some very special students and our staff members Sheila DePalmer, Emma Jones, Anthea Demos, Sara Masham, Nick Birchem, Maira Gonzalez, Carol Anderson, Katy Karpfinger, and we send a special farewell to Cilla Hines on her

retirement. Thank you for all you have contributed to ISS. You will always be a part of our ISS community. Ms Lyndsey Hadley and Ms Iwona Koczur will be changing to positions in the Middle School and High School. In August, we will welcome many new and returning staff members to our Primary School staff and many new students are moving to Stavanger. Please welcome them and make them quickly feel a part of our community.

On the 30th of April the Dutch students of NTC Stavanger celebrated Queen s day with a colorful bicycle parade.

”Koninginnedag” or Queen’s Day is a national holiday in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On this day we celebrate the birthday of the queen of the Netherlands. Although it s originally the birthday of Queen Juliana (the mother of Queen Beatrix) we celebrate her birthday on 30 April. Queen Beatrix

was born on 31 January, but the winter isn t the time to party outside. Many of the traditional activities are held outside.

Queen s Day is also a typical occasion for the world-famous Orange Craze. On this day most of the people wear orange clothing and creative orange accessories. The color orange refers to the name of the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange.

SWEC planted three trees on ENO’s Global Tree Planting Day on Tuesday 22nd May 2012.

Being part of a world-wide effort to green our planet is a wonderful project for SWEC students and they have been planting trees in the school grounds twice yearly in May and September since 2007.

The ENO Tree Planting Days are the largest international event for schools and the aim is to plant 100 million trees by the end of 2017.

In addition to planting trees in the school grounds SWEC sends money to Trees for Life and Tree Aid to cover the cost of hundreds of saplings being planted around the globe.

SWEC also supports Rainforest Concern by sponsoring acres of threatened rainforest in the Choco-Andean Rainforest Corridor in Ecuador, South America.

May 11th was the big day for our Bus Safety day. All students, school by school, was gathered in the new gym where they first were given a presentation about consequences of use/not use of seatbelts. Thereafter they went outdoors for a demonstration of the Bråstopp, (Sudden Stop). Some of the students were also allowed to try it, and felt the power even if the speed was no higher than 25km/h.

A week later, we experienced a real incident: One of our buses was nearly hit by a car, and the driver had to do a sudden stop. No one was injured – all students were using seatbelts! We will continue with our inspection of buses in the afternoon also next school year.

Due to the extension work, some of the Safety Audits had to be postponed. The last weeks of May we had 3 Safety Audits. Just weeks before, we made a Work place inspection in the whole school building. Consequently, there was not much to remark in the audits. Good to see that many of the remarks from the inspection already had been improved. Some of the improvements have to wait until end of school year, but the whole building gives a good and safe impression.

The ISS Mission StatementThe International School of Stavanger is dedicated to providing its students with English language education in a supportive, academically stimulating, and multi-cultural environment. We strive to fos-ter a love of learning, the development of individual skills and talents, and an awareness of the value each person has to society. Our goal is to enable students to succeed in continuing educational programs and to live as responsible and contributing citizens in the global community.

The International School of Stavanger (ISS), founded in 1966, is an independent, non-profit Norwegian foundation accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of Interna-tional Schools. The school enrolls students from ages 3 through 18. ISS offers an international university preparatory curriculum that combines the best features of many national educational systems. Both the Inter-national Baccalaureate Diploma programme and the International General Certificate of Secondary Educa-tion external examinations are available to students.

In 2011, the school has an enrollment of over 740 students who represent nearly 50 nationalities, includ-ing students from six of the earth’s seven continents.
